2. A VNS-based approach for solving the Manhattan metric straddle carrier routing problem with buffer areas

Abstract

This paper presents a metaheuristic approach for solving an optimization problem that arises at container terminals where straddle carriers (SCs) transport containers between the stacking areas and the seaside. In such container terminals, operational efficiency depends mainly on SC routing. SCs routes should consider the order in which containers are unloaded and loaded at the quay cranes (QCs), taking into account the limited capacity of the buffer area of each QC where containers are temporarily stored after being handled by a QC or an SC. Besides the precedence relations (i.e., container sequences) and buffer capacities, the solution framework considers safety constraints. Efficient routing of SCs directly contributes to minimizing the idle time of QCs, thereby improving their overall productivity and minimizing the turnaround time of vessels, which is the objective of the problem. Specifically, we present two different variants of the Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) algorithm. Each variant is initialized in both a greedy and a random manner. These algorithms address the problem by incorporating four LS operators commonly utilized in vehicle routing problems. We perform a comparative analysis of the results of these four approaches against each other and against solutions generated by an exact solver. Our numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithms perform better than the used solver, especially for bigger instances. A comparison with the results from the literature is also given and shows that the proposed VNS-based approach provides competitive results.

Abstract

With the new opportunities emerging from the current wave of digitalization, terminal planning and management need to be revisited by taking a data-driven perspective. Business analytics, as a practice of extracting insights from operational data, assists in reducing uncertainties using predictions and helps to identify and understand causes of inefficiencies, disruptions, and anomalies in intra- and inter-organizational terminal operations. Despite the growing complexity of data within and around container terminals, a lack of data-driven approaches in the context of container terminals can be identified. In this chapter, the concept of business analytics for supporting terminal planning and management is introduced. The chapter specifically focuses on data mining approaches and provides a comprehensive overview on applications in container terminals and related research. Abstract

Digital twins can facilitate high-fidelity representations of container terminals by applying various technologies and methods to better measure, understand, and improve operations. In this paper, a decision support system (DSS) based on digital twin and big data technologies is designed to demonstrate how real-time monitoring and an integrated decision support can be established. The DSS provides optimal operation plans and the benchmark for vessel delay early warnings through different resource allocation simulations at the planning level. It further enables real-time operational decision making through real-time monitoring and efficiency analyses using big data engines at the operational level. Abstract

The concept of smart port is still disputed in the literature, appearing in dispersed contributions, often not aligned with its intelligent systems background. In this sense, this paper proposes a theoretical framework for smart port terminals by presenting a literature review and conceptual definition, proposing a maturity model, and exploring a research agenda. We investigate defining characteristics and relations between enablers, applications, and outcomes for smart port terminals. The proposed maturity model evaluates these main aspects in six areas of interest, providing maturity indexes that enable identifying the current state of intelligence in a port terminal, hence aiding its improvement. The application of the maturity model in two Brazilian container terminals provided feedback to the theoretical proposition and supports its use as a tool for general assessment of smart port terminal maturity. As such, the paper can serve as a comprehensive guide for researchers and port managers to understand the field, fostering the development of roadmaps and smart applications in port terminals.
