A prototype pixel detector readout chip has been developed with a new front-end architecture aimed at eliminating the spectral distortion produced by charge diffusion in highly segmented semiconductor detectors. In the new architecture neighbouring pixels communicate with one another. At the corner of each pixel summing circuits add the total charge deposited in each sub-group of 4 pixels. Arbitration logic assigns a hit to the summing circuit with the highest charge. In the case where incoming X-ray photons produce fluorescence--a particular issue in high-Z materials--the charge deposited by those fluorescent photons will be included in the charge sum provided that the deposition takes place within the volume of the pixels neighbouring the initial impact point. The chip is configurable such that either the dimensions of each detector pixel match those of one readout pixel or detector pixels are 4 times greater in area than the readout pixels. In the latter case event-by-event summing is still possible between the larger pixels. As well as this innovative analog front-end circuit, each pixel contains comparators, logic circuits and two 15-bit counters. When the larger detector pixels are used these counters can be configured to permit multiple thresholds in a pixel providing spectroscopic information. The prototype chip has been designed and manufactured in an 8-metal 0.13 [micro]m CMOS technology. First measurements show an electronic pixel noise of ~ 72 e-rms (Single Pixel Mode) and ~ 140 e-rms (Charge Summing Mode). Index Terms--Charge sharing, CMOS, Medipix, photon counting, pixel, X-rays.

Pixel detector readout cells have been designed in the radiation hard DMILL technology and their characteristics evaluated before and after irradiation to 14Mrad. The test chip consists of two blocks of six readout cells each. Two different charge amplifiers are implemented, one of them using a capacitive feedback loop, the other the fast signal charge transfer to a high impedance integrating node. The measured equivalent noise charge is 110[e.sup.-] r.m.s. before and 150[e.sup.-] r.m.s. after irradiation. With a discriminator threshold set to 5000[e.sup.-], which reduces for the same bias setting to 4000[e.sup.-] after irradiation, the threshold variation is 300[e.sup.-] r.m.s. and 250[e.sup.-] r.m.s. respectively. The time walk is 40ns before and after irradiation. The use of this SOI technology for monolithic integration of electronics and detector in one substrate is under investigation.

An analogue VLSI cell for hybrid pixel detector readout, ANAPIX, has been designed and tested. The chip has been manufactured in the FASELEC SACMOS 3 micron technology. A peak detector allows asynchronous signals to be processed without precise trigger timing. An equivalent noise charge of about 100 electrons r. m. s. has been achieved on the cell alone. The cell has been wire bonded to a silicon detector pixel matrix and in the laboratory energy spectra from radioactive gamma and beta sources have been recorded with an equivalent noise charge of 200 electrons rms. The dynamic range design target of 500 to 50000 electrons was not achieved yet, due to a non linearity around 4000 electrons. This problem is to be solved in the design of the second generation to be manufactured in a one micron technology. This new cell is to be connected via bump bonding to a detector, the first assemblies are expected to be ready in 1995.

We report the results obtained with a novel readout system for scintillating fibres and x-ray imaging based on the combination of a silicon pixel detector and one stage of light amplification using a 2nd generation image intensifier. The pixel detector is a hybrid assembly of a high resistivity silicon detector bump-bonded to a CMOS binary readout chip and can be read out at a speed of 15 MHz. Each pixel element measures 75[[micro]meter] x 500[[micro]meter]. Scintillating fibre ribbons and scintillating crystals are coupled to the detector array using one stage of light amplification provided by a micro-channel plate (MCP) image intensifier with fiberoptic faceplates. We have used the system to image electron tracks in a bundle of scintillating fibre ribbons. Further we have shown how the system can be used for imaging 122 keV x-rays such as those used in nuclear medicine. The system provides the possibility of single photon counting, high spatial resolution and Compton rejection.

The analog performance of the Thomson HSOI3-HD technology has been measured up to a total dose of 12 Mrad(Si) of ionizing radiation (60Co). The threshold voltage shift is -170 mV for p-channel and -20 mV for n-channel transistors. Transconductance degradation is respectively 4% and 17%. Noise has been measured in the 500 Hz-25 MHz bandwidth. In addition to the 1/f and white noise, a generation-recombination contribution appears in the noise spectrum. This contribution is sensitive to the bias applied to the backgate and body electrodes. The white noise increase after irradiation is 16% for p-channel and 35% for n-channel transistors. p-channel transistors have very low 1/f noise and are less sensitive to irradiation effects.

The 'APC3' is a charge sampling and storage chip designed for high speed readout of silicon detectors. It has 32 channels, each with pre-amplifier, integrator and storage capacitors. Current from a silicon detector connected to the input is integrated as a charge and stored on a capacitor. There are 128 capacitors per channel which are used sequentially to store the charge. The charge is held on the storage capacitor until it is either read out or discarded. Logic on the chip manages the storage and retrieval of samples. This logic uses a novel architecture based on a system of pointers and read-out addresses. This paper describes the operation of the chip and measurements of its performance.

A new approach to monolithic pixel detectors, based on SOI wafers with high resistivity substrate, is being pursued by the CERN RD19 collaboration. This paper reports on the used fabrication methods, and on the results of the electrical evaluation of the SOI - MOSFET devices and of the detector structures fabricated in the bulk. The leakage current of the high-resistivity PIN-diodes was kept in the order of 5 to 10 nA/|cm.sup.2~. The SOI preparation processes considered (SIMOX and ZMR) produced working electronic circuits and appear to be compatible with the fabrication of detectors of suitable quality.

Radiation hardened SOI-CMOS is a possible candidate technology for mixed analog-digital signal processing electronics in experiments at the future high luminosity hadron colliders. In view of this application, we have studied the analog parameters of transistors realized in the Thomson TMS HSOI3-HD technology before and after exposure to total doses similar to those expected in the CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC. The devices have been irradiated up to 10 Mrad with 60Co and 3 center dot 10 to the fourteenth power neutrons/cm squared. The changes in the threshold voltage V(sub th) of front and back gates, leakage current and transconductance are studied. Subthreshold slope and charge pumping techniques have been used to estimate the interface state formation. Noise measurements in the 0.1kHz-3MHz bandwidth have been performed. The noise is comparable to that of a bulk CMOS process. Post irradiation effects have been regularly monitored and threshold voltage rebound for n-channel transistors is observed.

A readout chip implemented in an array with 16 columns at 500 micrometers pitch and 63 rows at 75 micrometer pitch was studied. The chip was bonded with solder bumps to a silicon detector with matching pixel elements. A trigger signal strobes event information in a pixel which allows it to be read out. This process cannot be done in the absence of a strobe. The hybrid detector has been tested and found to be sufficiently effective.

Silicon pad detectors with initial resistivities between 2.6 and 12.9 kilo ohms centimeter were irradiated with neutrons equivalent to 1 MeV energy up to a fluence of 5 times 10 (super 13)n cm (super -2). Results show an increase of the reverse current of unbiased n-type silicon diodes followed by a 30 to 40% room temperature annealing after a few months. A similar increase in current occurs in p-type diodes but conduction type is conserved.

A single Photon Counting pixel detector readout Chip (PCC) has been derived from previous work in the CERN RD19 collaboration for particle physics tracking devices, recently developed for high energy physics experiments. The readout chip is a 64 x 64 matrix of identical 170[[micro]meter] x 170[[micro]meter] cells. It is to be bump-bonded to an equally segmented 1 [cm.sup.2] matrix of semiconductor sensors, e.g. Si or GaAs. Each readout cell comprises a preamplifier, a discriminator and a 15-bit counter. The input noise is 170 [e.sup.-] rms. At the lowest nominal threshold of 1 400 [e.sup.-] (5.1 keV in Si) the cells exhibit a threshold distribution with a spread before adjustment of 350 e-rms. Each cell has a 5-bit register which allows masking, test-enable and 3-bit individual threshold adjust. After adjustment the threshold spread is reduced to 80 [e.sup.-] rms. Absolute calibration of the electrically measured equivalent charge can be done once the readout chip is bump-bonded to a detector.

A technology for manufacturing an aluminium grid onto a silicon wafer has been developed. The grid is fixed parallel and precisely to the wafer (anode) surface at a distance of 50 μm by means of insulating pillars. When some 400 V are applied between the grid and (anode) wafer, gas multiplication occurs: primary electrons from the drift space above the grid enter the holes and cause electron avalanches in the high-field region between the grid and the anode. Production and operational characteristics of the device are described. With this newly developed technology, CMOS (pixel) readout chips can be covered with a gas multiplication grid. Such a chip forms, together with the grid, an integrated device which can be applied as readout in a wide field of gaseous detectors.

We study the influence of lexical subsumption on the semantic proximity of terms. By studying the semantic relation between lexically subsumed terms in an existing controlled vocabulary and those in a corpus, we formulate hypotheses on the underlying specific relations. These hypotheses enable us to propose an ordering of term variants found in the corpus, by probability of decreasing semantic proximity. Results from our experiment show that surface indices like the presence of proper names, compounds and the number of added words in a term variant are criteria for ordering the variants of the same term. The ranking obtained will enable us to form more semantically-cohesive clusters. Applications targeted are text mining, question-answering and science and technology watch.

$\Lambda$, $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured at central rapidity in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158~A~GeV/$c$. The yields in Pb-Pb interactions are presente d as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement is observed which increases with centrality and with the strangeness co ntent of the hyperon.

- Abstract
The series of experiments (WA85, WA94 and WA97) at the Omega spectrometer at CERN SPS have systematically studied the production of different strange particles. Strangeness enhancements at central rapidities have been reported by WA85 and WA94 in S-W and S-S with respect to p-A collisions. For the investigation of Pb-Pb interactions in the WA97 experiment a new detector suitable for high particle densities, the Pixel Tracking Chamber, has been developed based on silicon pixel detectors. The results on production ratios and cross sections of Λ, Λ̄, Ξ-, Ξ̄+, Ω- and Ω̄+ detected by this experiment are presented. A significant enhancement of the Ω over Ξ ratio is observed when comparing p-Pb to Pb-Pb data (a factor of about 3).

WA97 is designed to study strange and multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production in 160 A GeV c PbPb collisions at the SPS with a telescope of silicon microdetectors. Four planes of silicon pixel detectors were successfully employed during the 1994 Pb run. A total of 60M central PbPb events were collected. We describe the experimental setup and report on some preliminary results from the off-line analysis. © 1995.
