This study investigated the effectiveness of portfolio-based writing assessment in EFL situations. Participants were 40 pre-intermediate young Iranian English learners. They were randomly divided into experimental and control groups of 20 each. The experimental group wrote on five pre-established topics from their coursebook. Their writings were checked in terms of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions of writing by two raters. They were given another opportunity to revise their writings to be corrected again. In contrast, the control group wrote only once and their writings were corrected only by their own teacher. The participants were also required to complete a questionnaire to assess their reflection and self-assessment. Results of the study indicate that portfolio-based writing assessment has a positive effect on language learning and writing ability. It also shows that it helps students' self-assessment and almost all students are satisfied with this method of assessment.

Background: Treatment response in High-grade Glioma (HGG) patients changes based on their genetic and biological characteristics. MiRNAs, as important regulators of drug and radiation resistance, and the Apparent Diffusion Coefficients (ADC) value of tumor can be used as a prognostic predictor for glioma. Objective: This study aimed to identify some of the pre-treatment individual patient features for predicting the treatment response in HGG patients. Material and Methods: In this prospective study, 18 HGG patients, who were candidated for chemo-radiation treatment, participated after informed consent of the patients. The investigated features were the expression level of miR-222 and miR-205 in plasma, the ADC value of tumor, Body Mass Index (BMI), and age. Treatment response was assessed, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to obtain a model to predict the treatment response. Mann-Whitney U test was also applied to select the variables with a significant relationship with patients' treatment response. Results: The LASSO coefficients for miR-205, miR-222, tumor's mean ADC value, BMI, and age were 3.611, -1.683, 2.468, -0.184, and -0.024, respectively. Mann- Whitney U test results showed miR-205 and tumor's mean ADC significantly related to treatment response (P-value<0.05). Conclusion: The miR-205 expression level of the patient in plasma and tumor's mean ADC value has the potential for prognostic predictors in HGG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Propylthiouracil (PTU) administration is associated with several cases of hepatotoxicity, especially in children. The mechanism(s) of PTU-induced hepatotoxicity is obscure. In the current study, we aimed to assess the effect of PTU on hepatocytes mitochondria in different experimental models. Methods: Mice were treated with PTU (10, 20, 40, 80, and 100 mg/kg, i.p) then, the liver mitochondria were isolated and evaluated. Moreover, liver mitochondria were isolated from normal mice and incubated with increasing concentrations of PTU (10 µM-1 mM). Mitochondrial dehydrogenases activity, mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial swelling, and mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content were monitored. Results: PTU hepatotoxicity was biochemically evident in mice by increased serum biomarkers of liver injury. PTU also caused a decrease in mitochondrial dehydrogenases activity, increased mitochondrial swelling, depleted mitochondrial ATP, and caused mitochondrial depolarization both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: Our data suggest mitochondrial dysfunction as a mechanism for PTU-induced hepatotoxicity

Adiponectin is a multifunctional cytokine that has a role in regulating inflammation. In patients without chronic renal failure (CRF) and type 2 diabetics, decreased adiponectin levels are associated with insulin resistance. Lower serum plasma adiponectin values are link to larger tumor size and metastasis in clear-cell carcinoma of the kidney too. However, in patients with established chronic kidney disease (CKD), adiponectin levels are elevated and positively predict progression of disease. In addition, increased levels of serum adiponectin of hemodialysis patients were associated with decrease in bone mineral density in hemodialysis patients. Thus, depending on type of renal failure should be adjusted the adiponectin levels in patients. In CKD patients without diabetic, decreasing adiponectin levels by ARB drugs may be appropriate for inhibition of disease progression.

Silk fibroin (SF), extracted from Bombyx mori, has unique physicochemical properties to achieve an efficient wound dressing. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/ZnO NPs/silk fibroin nanocomposite was made, and an innovative nanofiber of SF/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/RGO/ZnO NPs was ready with the electrospinning technique and successfully characterized. The results of MIC and OD analyses were used to investigate the synthesized materials' antibacterial effects and displayed that the synthesized materials could inhibit growth against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. However, both in vitro cytotoxicity (MTT) and scratch wound studies have shown that RGO/ZnO NPs and SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs are not only non‐toxic to NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, but also can cause cell viability, cell proliferation, and cell migration. Furthermore, improving the synthesized nanofiber's structural properties in the presence of RGO and ZnO NPs has been confirmed by performing tensile strength, contact angle, and biodegradation analyses. Also, in a cell attachment analysis, fibroblast cells had migrated and expanded well in the nanofibrous structures. Moreover, in vivo assay, SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber treated rats and has been shown significant healing activity and tissue regeneration compared with other treated groups. Therefore, this study suggests that SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber is a hopeful wound dressing for preventing bacteria growth and improving superficial wound repair. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
