Data on the transfer of artificial radionuclides from the environment to the food supply is necessary for internal dose assessment. There is a necessity for expanding and improving the available information on these factors in order to make better dose models for specific scenarios. This paper describes the results of a field experiment with broiler chickens on the transfer factor (Ff) and concentration ratio (CR) for the long-term intake of 241Am and 137Cs with grass meal and soil. The broilers were divided into two groups, each group had nine subgroups and each subgroup had three broilers. The radionuclide concentrations in the feed and the thigh muscle, thigh bone, and liver of 54 broilers divided between the grass meal and soil groups were evaluated by gamma spectrometry for 241Am and 137Cs. The duration of feeding with "contaminated" sources ranged between 1–70 days. The equilibrium stage of 241Am in muscle and bone occurs on the 1st and 40th day, respectively; for 137Cs in muscle– 30th days of intake and for liver and bone– 7th days. For 241Am, the liver did not reach equilibrium stage during the 70 days of intake. Ff of 137Cs in the "forage-muscle" and "soil-muscle" systems were determined as 1.9±0.3 and 0.18±0.05; Ff of 241Am in the "soil-muscle" system was—7.5×10−5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the Thermal Power Plant in Oroszlány (Hungary), a huge amount of by-products have been produced since 1961. In this survey, coal and other by-products were examined (fly ash, bottom ash, fluidised bed bottom ash, gypsum and slurry-type ash). The natural isotopes were determined using an HPGe detector. It was found that the radionuclide content of coal was significantly lower (226Ra = 45.3±6.3, 232Th = 26.3±5.7 and 40K = 210±21 Bq kg-1) than that in the case of ashes other than the fluidised type. The average values of the bottom ash--deposited in the largest quantities--were three times higher than those for coal (226Ra = 144±18, 232Th = 84.3±14 and 40K = 260±25 Bq kg-1). In the case of fractionised bottom ash, the radionuclide content of <0.1 mm was 45 % higher than that of >1.6 mm and the massic radon exhalation of <0.1 mm was approximately four times higher than that above this range. The aim of this study is to explore the correlations between the properties of the source's material and the thoron flux produced. This means a complex procedure that involves morphological characterisation (the determination of specific surface area and pore size distribution) and thoron emanation and exhalation measurements as well. In this work, the preparation of 27 thoron sources has been carried out. Three types of ceramics with different morphological properties were used as a matrix material with three different thorium contents. Spheres were formed from the dollop, and they were fired at different temperatures (200, 600 and 900°C). The phase analysis of the samples was performed by powder X-ray diffraction. The pore size distribution was determined by mercury penetration. The thoron emanation was measured using an accumulation chamber; the measured thoron emanation coefficients were from 0.34 ± 0.03 to 7.69 ± 0.13 %. The process of robotics in the world, but also in Slovakia is constantly increasing, and although new types of robots are being developed, the human hand of those work stations cannot be removed completely. Despite the already developed and functioning collaborative robots that allow safe operations side by side with humans, it is necessary for a worker to known accurate, fast and safe procedure of his working activities. Visual work instructions (VWI) are made for this purpose. The worker must be able to quickly understand the principle of work procedure and get quick information about potential risks in very short time. Therefore, great regard for the content of VWI must be taken. At first glance, a simple visual work instructions enable not only to increase safety at the workplace, but also increase workers productivity.

Human dental enamel is a uniquely hard and tough biological realization of the inherently brittle apatite crystal. In sound enamel both structure and chemistry are organically fine-tuned, while developmental disorders - such as hypomineralization - often lead to severe enamel alterations resulting in weaker mechanical performance and shorter lifetime as in case of molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) which has a global prevalence of 13.5%. However, causes of the development of hypomineralization disorder remain unclear up to date. In the present paper, a new form of dental hypomineralization is reported for the first time. Structural and chemical alterations of dental enamel exhibiting a special ribbon-like hypomineralization (RLH) are compared to the characteristics of sound and MIH-affected teeth. Microporosity, mineral density and characteristic 3D macroscopic shape of the RLH affected volumes were captured by micro-CT analysis. On the submicron-scale, nanoporosity, unusual morphologies and reduced size of apatite nanocrystals have been revealed. These RLH specific features are coupled with a particular chemical fingerprint in Raman spectroscopy, which allows its clear separation from MIH affected and sound enamel. Based on these nanostructural features we conclude different failure mechanisms in the biochemical control during crystallization of the RLH and MIH enamel. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental enamel disorder with up to 14% prevalence, characterized by reduced mineral content, hypersensitivity, and post-eruptive enamel breakdown. The causes of the development of this disorder remain unclear up to date. In this study, we examine molars with hypomineralization in a ribbon-like macroscopic morphology. These molars show increased porosity, organic content, and reduced mineral content, while carbonate levels remain unchanged in both affected and unaffected areas, unlike MIH-affected enamel. Ribbon-like hypomineralized (RLH) enamel also features unusual apatite nanocrystal morphologies, including isometric crystals in the prism boundary zone and bean-shaped crystals with a soft central zone. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident created large stockpiles of tritium containing cooling water, which is to be gradually released into the Pacific Ocean, gaining attention from surrounding countries, environmental groups, and local residents concerned with the possibility of increasing tritium concentrations in the water and food cycle. Establishing baseline concentration levels and monitoring tritium immission values are important for assuring public safety, providing data for scientific research and risk communication. Tritium concentrations in the environment are very low; therefore, tritium measurements require enrichment in order to estimate the radiation exposure from drinking water intake and provide information on the water cycle. Natural water samples were collected at Tomioka Town located south of the FDNPP. Samples were distilled, enriched by electrolysis, and re-distilled using an improved SPE method to preconcentrate tritium to measureable levels. Tritium concentrations were determined by a low-background liquid scintillation counter. The observed tritium concentrations were relatively low, rainwater had a mean and SD value of 0.40 ± 0.13 Bq/L, and freshwater samples showed similar concentrations, while brackish coastal water samples were below 0.13 ± 0.02 Bq/L. At the moment, the academic world is faced with various challenges that negatively impact science integrity. One is hijacked journals, a second, inauthentic website for indexed legitimate journals, managed by cybercriminals. These journals publish any manuscript by charging authors and pose a risk to scientific integrity. This piece compares a journal's original and hijacked versions regarding authority in search engines. A list of 16 medical journals, along with their hijacked versions, has been collected. The MOZ Domain Authority has been used to check the authority of both original and hijacked journals, and the results have been discussed. It indicates that hijacked journals are gaining more credibility than original ones. This should alarm academia and highlights a need for serious action against hijacked journals. The related policies should be planned, and tools should be developed to support easy detection of hijacked journals. Enamel prism is the main microstructural unit of mammalian enamel which composed of hundreds of bioapatite nanocrystals. Prism structure plays a key role in the excellent mechanical performance of dental enamel during millions of chewing cycles without significant remodeling. Thus, quantitative understanding of prism architecture is of utmost importance for biomechanical materials design. To characterize enamel prism orientation quantitatively, a novel image processing method has been developed. Our method is based on scanning electron microscopy images of etched enamel surface and consists of an ellipse fitting procedure, which provides a numerical approximation of prism shape and orientation in the studied cross section. The obtained analytical data allow to construct color coded orientation maps, which provide quick and useful insight into the microstructure of enamel. Besides striking visualization, orientation maps allow to extract and plot the rich information on the azimuthal and inclination angles of the prisms as function of location. Numerical data on prism arrangement can be analyzed using statistical tools over large areas, which paves the way towards quantifying comparative investigation of prism arrangement either in dentistry research or evolution biology. The application of the method is demonstrated for a distal-mesial cross-section of sound human tooth enamel. In this study, by considering the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs) contained in the building materials used in Mahallat, Iran - an area exposed to a high level of natural background radiation - residential scenarios were simulated by applying the computer code RESRAD-BUILD to estimate the long-term Effective Dose rate of three different cases of basic building materials utilized in walls, floors and ceilings. Maximum effective dose rates of between 504 and 1433 μSv yr -1 were calculated in the second case study, tiled cement floor. The highest external and radon doses were also calculated to be 369 and 1064 μSv, respectively. The simulation results revealed that 232 Th and 40 K contribute the most and least to the indoor dose, respectively. As a result of a sensitivity analysis, it was found that the air exchange rate is a key variable to easily reduce the radiological impacts of building materials. The water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forrsk.) is a common vegetable and a part of the staple diet in Vietnam. It has a well-known tendency for the high absorption of lead, including the radioactive isotope 210 Pb. 210  Pb day to 210 Po, which is one of the most toxic radioactive isotopes when ingested. Currently, there are few data available on the activity concentration or transfer parameters of water spinach grown in Vietnam. To provide this data, in this study, the 210 Po activity concentrations in the soil, water and the roots, stems, and leaves of two types of spinach (grown in soil flooded with water and grown in normal soil) in Hanoi, Vietnam were determined by alpha spectrometry. The order of activity concentrations for water spinach grown in unflooded was C stem  < C leaf  < C root , while for flooded C stem  ≈ C root  < C leaf . Cross-sectional study of sound primary dental enamel revealed hardness zonation and, in parallel, significant change in the Mg content below the prismless layer. Mg content is known to play an important role in enamel apatite biomineralization, therefore, Mg ion exchange experiments were carried out on the outer surface of sound primary molars and on reference abiogenic Ca-phosphates using MgCl 2 solution. Effects of Mg incorporation on crystal/particle size, ionic ratio and morphology were compared and the observed changes were explained by parallel diffusion and dissolution/reprecipitation processes. Based on depth profile analysis and high resolution electron microscopy of the Mg-exchanged dental enamel, a poorly ordered surface layer of approximately 10-15 nanometer thickness was identified. This thin layer is strongly enriched in Mg and has non-apatitic structure. Below the surface layer, the Mg content increased only moderately (up to ~3 at%) and the apatite crystal structure of enamel was preserved. As a common effect of the Mg exchanged volume, primary dental enamel exhibited about 20% increase of nanohardness, which is intrepreted by strengthening of both the thin surface layer and the region below due to the decreased crystallite size and the effect of incorporated Mg, respectively. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Dental enamel is the most durable mineralized tissue in the human body, which, in spite to be exposed to extreme conditions like mastication and acidic dissolution, is able to fulfill its biological function during lifetime. In this study we show that minor component magnesium can affect hardness properties of human primary dental enamel. Then, through Mg incorporation experiments we provide an additional proof for the poorly ordered Mg-containing intergranular phase which has been recently observed. Also, we report that the hardness of dental enamel can be increased by ca. 20% by Mg incorporation. The caesium retention characteristics of a potassium-nickel hexacyanoferrate resin in a polyacrylnitrile (KNiFC-PAN) matrix were tested in fresh water over the range of 2.5-400 mL min-1. The experimental setup used 2 mL resin and 4-L aliquots of freshwater samples. The results showed nearly 100% retention at speeds below 10 mL min-1, above 80% up to 100 mL min-1, and approached 50% at 400 mL min-1. Using 100 mL min-1 flow rate and KNiFC-PAN resin in a well-type HPGe detector, the minimum detectable concentration was reduced to 3 mBq kg-1 for 4-L aliquots of water samples from the previous 15 mBq kg-1 achieved by Powdex ion-exchange resin and a planar type HPGe detector., (© The Author(s) 2020. The measured gross alpha and gross beta activities in the edible muscle tissues of eleven selected marine species along the coast of North Vietnam varied from 10.2 ± 1.5 to 73.2 ± 8.1 Bq/kg (wwt) and from 10.6 ± 0.4 to 68.8 ± 2.8 Bq/kg (wwt), respectively. The lowest gross alpha activity was recorded for bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) as a result of its carnivorous diet, and the highest alpha activity was noted for blood cockle (Anadara granosa) as a result of its omnivorous diet. However, the gross beta activities in both carnivorous and omnivorous species were similar. The highest and lowest gross beta activities were observed for narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) and for bigfin reef squid and squid (Teuthida), respectively. All three aforementioned species have carnivorous diets. The calculated annual committed effective dose resulting from the consumption of 25 kg of muscle tissue per year varied from 192 to 1375 μS with an average of 689 μS.

222 Rn, 220 Rn and their short-lived progenies are well known radioactive indoor pollutants, identified as the leading environmental cause of lung cancer next to smoking. Apart from the conventional measurement methods, numerical modeling methods are developed to simulate their physical and decay processes in 222 Rn and 220 Rn's life cycle, estimate their levels, concentration distributions, as well as effects of control strategies in the indoor environment. In this article, we summarized the numerical models used to illustrate the physical processes of each source of 222 Rn and 220 Rn entry into the indoor environment, and the application of Jacobi room models and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) models used to present the behaviors of indoor 222 Rn, 220 Rn and their progenies. Furthermore, we consider that the development of numerical modeling of 222 Rn and 220 Rn would have a bright prospect in the directions of stochastic methods based on a steady-state model, the fine simulation of the time-dependent model as well as the multi-dimension model., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The valorization of industrial by-products such as red mud became a tempting opportunity, but the understanding of the risks involved is required for the safe utilization of these products. One of the risks involved are the elevated levels of radionuclides (in the 100-1300 Bq/kg range for both the 238 U and 232  Th decay chains, but usually lower than 1000 Bq/kg, which is the recommended limit for excemption or clearance according to the EU BSS released in 2013) in red mud that can affect human health. There is no satisfactory answer for the utilization of red mud; the main current solution is still almost exclusively disposal into a landfill. For the safe utilization and deposition of red mud, it is important to be able to assess the leaching behaviour of radionuclides. Because there is no commonly accepted measurement protocol for testing the leaching of radionuclides in the EU a combined measurement protocol was made and tested based on heavy metal leaching methods. The leaching features of red mud were studied by methods compliant with the MSZ-21470-50 Hungarian standard, the CEN/TS 14429 standard and the Tessier sequential extraction method for 232 Th and 210 Po. The leached solutions were taken to radiochemical separation followed by spontaneous deposition for Po and electrodeposition for Th. The 332 ± 33 Bq/kg 232 Th content was minimally mobile, 1% became available for distilled water 1% and 6% for Lakanen-Erviö solution; the Tessier extraction showed minimal mobility in the first four steps, while more than 85% remained in the residue. The 210 Po measurements had a severe disturbing effect in many cases, probably due to large amounts of iron present in the red mud, from the 310 ± 12 Bq/kg by aqua regia digestion, distilled water mobilized 23%, while Lakanen-Erviö solution mobilized ∼13%. The raw materials of the phosphate fertilizer industry are the various apatite minerals. Some of these have high levels of natural radionuclides, and thus phosphate fertilizers contain significant amounts of U-238, K-40 and Ra-226. These can leach out of the fertilizers used in large quantities for resupplying essential nutrients in the soil and can then enter the food chain through plants, thereby increasing the internal dose of the affected population. In the current study, the radiological risk of eight commercially available phosphate fertilizers (superphosphate, NPK, PK) and their leaching behaviours were investigated using different techniques (gamma and alpha spectrometry), and the dose contributions of using these fertilizers were estimated. To characterize the leaching behaviour, two leaching procedures were applied and compared -the MSZ 21470-50 (Hungarian standard) and the Tessier five-step sequential extraction method. Based on the evaluation of the gamma-spectra, it is found that the level of Th-232 in the samples was low (max.7 ± 6 Bq kg -1 ), the average Ra-226 activity concentration was 309 ± 39 Bq kg -1 (min. 10 ± 8 Bq kg -1 , max. 570 ± 46 Bq kg -1 ), while the K-40 concentrations (average 3139 ± 188 Bq kg -1 , min. 51 ± 36 Bq kg -1 ) could be as high as 7057 ± 427 Bq kg -1 . The high K-40 can be explained by reference to the composition of the investigated fertilizers (NPK, PK). U concentrations were between 15 and 361 Bq kg -1 , with the average of 254 Bq kg -1 , measured using alpha spectrometry. The good correlation between P 2 O 5 content and radioactivity reported previously is not found in our data. The leaching studies reveal that the mobility of the fertilizer's uranium content is greatly influenced by the parameters of the leaching methods.
