Abstract: Neutron capture cross sections are one of the most important nuclear inputs to models of stellar nucleosynthesis of the elements heavier than iron. The activation technique and the time-of-flight method are mostly used to determine the required data experimentally. Recent developments of experimental techniques allow for new experiments on radioactive isotopes. Monte-Carlo based analysis methods give new insights into the systematic uncertainties of previous measurements. We present an overview over the state-of-the-art experimental techniques, a detailed new evaluation of the $^{197}$Au(n,$\gamma$) cross section in the keV-regime and the corresponding re-evaluation of 63 more isotopes, which have been measured in the past relative to the gold cross section., Comment: 34 pages, 83 figs

Abstract: The decay properties of long-lived excited states (isomers) can have a significant impact on the destruction channels of isotopes under stellar conditions. In sufficiently hot environments, the population of isomers can be altered via thermal excitation or de-excitation. If the corresponding lifetimes are of the same order of magnitude as the typical time scales of the environment, the isomers have to be the treated explicitly. We present a general approach to the treatment of isomers in stellar nucleosynthesis codes and discuss a few illustrative examples. Abstract: In this work, we investigated the ability of a high-purity germanium detector connected to a trapezoid-filter-based data acquisition system to reliably record signals in spite of high sample activities. By activating multiple Na$_{2}$CO$_{3}$ samples with different Na content, we were able to deduce efficiency, resolution and dead time of the system used as a function of the sample activity. Based on the results, we were able to find a setting which allows measurements of event rates up to 35~kHz per readout channel with an energy resolution of 0.3\% at the 2754 keV $^{24}$Na line., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at $T<1$\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

Abstract: Neutron capture cross sections of unstable isotopes are important for neutron-induced nucleosynthesis as well as for technological applications. A combination of a radioactive beam facility, an ion storage ring and a high flux reactor would allow a direct measurement of neutron induced reactions over a wide energy range on isotopes with half lives down to minutes. The idea is to measure neutron-induced reactions on radioactive ions in inverse kinematics. This means, the radioactive ions will pass through a neutron target. In order to efficiently use the rare nuclides as well as to enhance the luminosity, the exotic nuclides can be stored in an ion storage ring. The neutron target can be the core of a research reactor, where one of the central fuel elements is replaced by the evacuated beam pipe of the storage ring. Abstract: The neutron activation technique is a well established method to measure neutron capture cross sections relevant for the s-process. The 7Li(p,n) reaction at Ep = 1912 keV is often used as a neutron source since the energy distribution of the emitted neutrons closely resembles a Maxwell-Boltzmann spectrum of kBT = 25 keV, mimicking the 22Ne(α,n) phase in TP-AGB stars. The weak s-process, which takes place in massive stars, can reach energies up to kBT = 90 keV. Neutron spectra corresponding to a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with kBT > 25 keV cannot be produced by the 7Li(p,n) reaction directly. We developed a method to obtain quasi-Maxwellian neutron capture cross sections over a wide energy range by combining a set of spectrum average cross sections measured at six different proton energies and distances between the lithium target and the sample. The measured spectrum averaged cross section can be used to calculate the Maxwellian-Averaged cross-section (MACS) from kBT = 25 keV to kBT = 90 keV. Over the last two years neutron capture cross sections on over 20 isotopes have been measured at Goethe University Frankfurt using this methodology. An overview of the current experimental method, challenges during data analysis and the first results are presented.

Abstract: The slow neutron capture process produces heavy elements in different stellar sites at different temperatures. Neutron capture cross sections for stellar temperatures between kBT = 5 keV and kBT = 100 keV are crucial for a quantitative understanding of the s-process abundance distribution. Over the last decade activation measurements were performed at the Goethe University Frankfurt to study cross sections at a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. We developed a new method to measure neutron capture cross sections at kBT = 6 keV.

Abstract: We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Abstract: The neutron activation method is well-suited to investigate neutron-capture cross sections relevant for the main s-process component. Neutrons can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction with proton energies of 1912 keV at e.g. Van de Graaff accelerators, which results in a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of neutrons corresponding to a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. However, the weak s-process takes place in massive stars at temperatures between 25 and 90 keV. Simulations using the PINO code [2] suggest that a Maxwellian spectrum for higher energies, e.g. kBT = 90 keV, can be approximated by a linear combination of different neutron spectra. To validate the PINO code at proton energies Ep ≠ 1912 keV, neutron time-of-ﬂight measurements were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany.

Abstract: The determination of astrophysically relevant neutron-induced cross sections is particularly difficult when the involved isotopes are radioactive or the cross sections are very small. Activation experiments at reactors offer the possibility to overcome these limitations with high neutron fluxes. The flux determination is typically based on the activation of two monitors with known cross sections to separate the different flux components. The usually applied cadmium difference method allows a distinction between the thermal and the epithermal part. By a combination of two linear functions representing both monitors the neutron flux components can be determined. However, if more than two monitors are used, the linear system of equations is overdetermined, which allows the identification of a probability distribution. In this proceeding, the feasibility and relevance of this method is demonstrated.

To understand the ongoing nucleosynthesis, the probability of a neutron capture for different temperatures and therefore for different stellar sites is essential. Activation experiments using the 7Li(p,n) reaction as neutron source were performed. At a temperature of kBT = 25 keV the cross sections were determined for 27Al, 37Cl and 41K. A new method was developed to perform activation experiments at even lower temperatures. For a proof of principle, the cross section for 64Ni was measured at kBT = 25 keV as well as for kBT = 6 keV. To study the impact of isomeric states at higher energies, activations of 181Ta were performed using two different proton energies.

Abstract: 19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Abstract: The determination of astrophysically relevant neutron-induced cross sections is particularly difficult when the involved isotopes are radioactive or the cross sections are very small. Activation experiments at reactors offer the possibility to overcome these limitations with high neutron fluxes. The flux determination is typically based on the activation of two monitors with known cross sections to separate the different flux components. The usually applied cadmium difference method allows a distinction between the thermal and the epithermal part. By a combination of two linear functions representing both monitors the neutron flux components can be determined. However, if more than two monitors are used, the linear system of equations is overdetermined, which allows the identification of a probability distribution. In this proceeding, the feasibility and relevance of this method is demonstrated.

Abstract: The neutron activation method is well-suited to investigate neutron-capture cross sections relevant for the main s-process component. Neutrons can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction with proton energies of 1912 keV at e.g. Van de Graaff accelerators, which results in a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of neutrons corresponding to a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. However, the weak s-process takes place in massive stars at temperatures between 25 and 90 keV. Simulations using the PINO code [2] suggest that a Maxwellian spectrum for higher energies, e.g. kBT = 90 keV, can be approximated by a linear combination of different neutron spectra. To validate the PINO code at proton energies Ep ≠ 1912 keV, neutron time-of-ﬂight measurements were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany.

Abstract: The origin of many p-nuclei remains an unsolved problem in nuclear astrophysics. While photo-dissociation reactions in the γ -process can explain the production of many p-nuclei, some, notably 92 , 94 Mo and 96 , 98 Ru are underproduced in network calculations. The 90 Zr(p, γ ) 91 Nb reaction is part of a possible (p, γ ) reaction chain for the production of the p-nucleus 92 Mo. Available data show a large disagreement between the different reported cross sections measurements for the 90 Zr(p, γ ) 91 Nb reaction. We measured proton capture cross sections with an enriched 90 Zr target using in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy for proton energies between 2.75 MeV and 5.1 MeV. The emitted γ -rays were detected using the HORUS (High efficiency Observatory for γ -Ray Unique Spectroscopy) detector array at the University of Cologne, Germany. To account for the possible contribution of the 91 Zr(p,n) reaction, an enriched 91 Zr was irradiated. We measured production cross sections for the ground and isomeric state of 91 Nb as well as partial cross section for up to ten high-energy primary transitions. The results are in good agreement with a former in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy measurement by Laird et al.. Abstract: The huge neutron fluxes offer the possibility to use research reactors to produce isotopes of interest, which can be investigated afterwards. An example is the half-lives of long-lived isotopes like 129I. A direct usage of reactor neutrons in the astrophysical energy regime is only possible, if the corresponding ions are not at rest in the laboratory frame. The combination of an ion storage ring with a reactor and a neutron guide could open the path to direct measurements of neutron-induced cross sections on short-lived radioactive isotopes in the astrophysically interesting energy regime.

Abstract: NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5 × 5 × 250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250 × 250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

33. Accelerator mass spectrometry measurement of the reaction 35Cl(n,γ)36Cl at keV energies

Abstract: The nuclide 35Cl can act as a minor “neutron poison” in the stellar slow neutron capture process. Neutron activation combined with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was applied to measure the (n,γ) cross section of 35Cl for neutron spectra simulating Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions of kT,∼,30,keV and 40,keV, respectively. The neutron activations were performed at the Karlsruhe Van de Graaff accelerator and at the superconducting linear accelerator of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility utilizing the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction. AMS measurements of the irradiated samples were performed at the 3,MV Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator, the 6,MV tandem accelerator at the Dresden AMS facility, and the 14,UD tandem accelerator of the Australian National University in Canberra. Our method is independent of previous measurements. For an energy of kT,=,30,keV, we report a Maxwellian averaged cross sections of 8.33(32),mb. Using this new value in stellar isotopic abundance calculations, minor changes for the abundances of 35Cl, 36Cl and 36S are derived.

Abstract: The quasi-free scattering reactions 11C(p, 2p) and 10,11,12C(p, pn) have been studied in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 300–400 MeV/u at the R3B-LAND setup. The outgoing proton-proton and protonneutron pairs were detected in coincidence with the reaction fragments in kinematically complete measurements. The efficiency to detect these pairs has been obtained from GEANT4 simulations which were tested using the 12C(p, 2p) and 12C(p, pn) reactions. Experimental cross sections and momentum distributions have been obtained and compared to DWIA calculations based on eikonal theory. The new results reported here are combined with previously published cross sections for quasi-free scattering from oxygen and nitrogen isotopes and together they enable a systematic study of the reduction of singleparticle strength compared to predictions of the shell model over a wide neutron-to-proton asymmetry range. The combined reduction factors show a weak or no dependence on isospin asymmetry, in contrast to the strong dependency reported in nucleon-removal reactions induced by nuclear targets at lower energies. However, the reduction factors for (p, 2p) are found to be ’significantly smaller than for (p, pn) reactions for all investigated nuclei.

Abstract: An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like 142Pm60+ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7)s−1 for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7)s−1 for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Abstract: The neutron activation method is well-suited to investigate neutron-capture cross sections relevant for the main s-process component. Neutrons can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction with proton energies of 1912 keV at e.g. Van de Graaff accelerators, which results in a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of neutrons corresponding to a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. However, the weak s-process takes place in massive stars at temperatures between 25 and 90 keV. Simulations using the PINO code [2] suggest that a Maxwellian spectrum for higher energies, e.g. kBT = 90 keV, can be approximated by a linear combination of different neutron spectra. To validate the PINO code at proton energies Ep ≠ 1912 keV, neutron time-of-ﬂight measurements were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany. Abstract: Quasifree one-proton knockout reactions have been employed in inverse kinematics for a systematic study of the structure of stable and exotic oxygen isotopes at the R3B/LAND setup with incident beam energies in the range of 300–450 MeV/u. The oxygen isotopic chain offers a large variation of separation energies that allows for a quantitative understanding of single-particle strength with changing isospin asymmetry. Quasifree knockout reactions provide a complementary approach to intermediate-energy one-nucleon removal reactions. Inclusive cross sections for quasifree knockout reactions of the type AO(p,2p)A−1N have been determined and compared to calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory. The reduction factors for the single-particle strength with respect to the independent-particle model were obtained and compared to state-of-the-art ab initio predictions. The results do not show any significant dependence on proton-neutron asymmetry.

Abstract: We discuss the possibility to build a neutron target for nuclear reaction studies in inverse kinematics utilizing a storage ring and radioactive ion beams. The proposed neutron target is a specially designed spallation target surrounded by a large moderator of heavy water (D2O). We present the resulting neutron spectra and their properties as a target. We discuss possible realizations at different experimental facilities.

Abstract: Neutron-induced reaction cross sections are important for a wide variety of research fields ranging from the study of nuclear level densities, nucleosynthesis to applications of nuclear technology like design, and criticality and safety assessment of existing and future nuclear reactors, radiation dosimetry, medical applications, nuclear waste transmutation, accelerator-driven systems and fuel cycle investigations. Simulations and calculations of nuclear technology applications largely rely on evaluated nuclear data libraries. The evaluations in these libraries are based both on experimental data and theoretical models. CERN’s neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF has produced a considerable amount of experimental data since it has become fully operational with the start of its scientific measurement programme in 2001. While for a long period a single measurement station (EAR1) located at 185 m from the neutron production target was available, the construction of a second beam line at 20 m (EAR2) in 2014 has substantially increased the measurement capabilities of the facility. An outline of the experimental nuclear data activities at n_TOF will be presented.

Abstract: The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN's n_TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n_TOF's new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1). Preliminary results as well as the experimental procedure, including a description of the facility and the data handling and analysis, are presented.

Abstract: The accuracy on neutron capture cross section of fissile isotopes must be improved for the design of future nuclear systems such as Gen-IV reactors and Accelerator Driven Systems. The High Priority Request List of the Nuclear Energy Agency, which lists the most important nuclear data requirements, includes also the neutron capture cross sections of fissile isotopes such as 233,235U and 239,241Pu. A specific experimental setup has been used at the CERN n_TOF facility for the measurement of the neutron capture cross section of 235U by a set of micromegas fission detectors placed inside a segmented BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter.

Abstract: The huge neutron fluxes offer the possibility to use research reactors to produce isotopes of interest, which can be investigated afterwards. An example is the half-lives of long-lived isotopes like 129I. A direct usage of reactor neutrons in the astrophysical energy regime is only possible, if the corresponding ions are not at rest in the laboratory frame. The combination of an ion storage ring with a reactor and a neutron guide could open the path to direct measurements of neutron-induced cross sections on short-lived radioactive isotopes in the astrophysically interesting energy regime.

Abstract: The production of 77,79,85,85mKr and 77Br via the reaction Se(a, x) was investigated between Ea = 11 and 15 MeV using the activation technique. The irradiation of natural selenium targets on aluminum backings was conducted at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany. The spectroscopic analysis of the reaction products was performed using a high-purity germanium detector located at PTB and a low energy photon spectrometer detector at the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. Thicktarget yields were determined. The corresponding energy-dependent production cross sections of 77,79,85,85mKr and 77Br were calculated from the thicktarget yields. Good agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions using the TALYS-1.6 code was found.

Abstract: Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,γ)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T
