When particles with integer spin accumulate at low temperature and high density they undergo Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Atoms, solid-state excitons and excitons coupled to light all exhibit BEC, which results in high coherence due to massive occupation of the respective system's ground state. Surprisingly, photons were shown to exhibit BEC much more recently in organic dye-filled optical microcavities, which, owing to the photon's low mass, occurs at room temperature. Here we demonstrate that photons within an inorganic semiconductor microcavity also thermalise and undergo BEC. Although semiconductor lasers are understood to operate out of thermal equilibrium, we identify a region of good thermalisation in our system where we can clearly distinguish laser action from BEC. Based on well-developed technology, semiconductor microcavities are a robust system for exploring the physics and applications of quantum statistical photon condensates. Notably, photon BEC is an alternative to exciton-based BECs, which dissociate under high excitation and often require cryogenic operating conditions. In practical terms, photon BECs offer their critical behaviour at lower thresholds than lasers. Our study shows two further advantages of photon BEC in semiconductor materials: the lack of dark electronic states allows these BECs to be sustained continuously; and semiconductor quantum wells offer strong photon-photon scattering. We measure an unoptimised interaction parameter, $\tilde{g}=0.0023\pm0.0003$, which is large enough to access the rich physics of interactions within BECs, such as superfluid light or vortex formation., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We present a detailed atomic-resolution study of morphology and substrate etching mechanism in InAs/InP droplet epitaxy quantum dots (QDs) grown by metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy via cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (X-STM). Two different etching processes are observed depending on the crystallization temperature: local drilling and long-range etching. In local drilling occurring at temperatures of ≤500 °C, the In droplet locally liquefies the InP underneath and the P atoms can easily diffuse out of the droplet to the edges. During crystallization, the As atoms diffuse into the droplet and crystallize at the solid–liquid interface, forming an InAs etch pit underneath the QD. In long-range etching, occurring at higher temperatures of >500 °C, the InP layer is destabilized and the In atoms from the surroundings migrate toward the droplet. The P atoms can easily escape from the surface into the vacuum, forming trenches around the QD. We show for the first time the formation of trenches and long-range etching in InAs/InP QDs with atomic resolution. Both etching processes can be suppressed by growing a thin layer of InGaAs prior to the droplet deposition. The QD composition is estimated by finite element modeling in combination with X-STM. The change in the morphology of QDs due to etching can strongly influence the fine structure splitting. Therefore, the current atomic-resolution study sheds light on the morphology and etching behavior as a function of crystallization temperature and provides a valuable insight into the formation of InAs/InP droplet epitaxy QDs which have potential applications in quantum information technologies.

The uptake of the current concept of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by the public, physicians and health authorities is low. Physicians still mix up CKD with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. In a recent manuscript, only 23% of participants in a cohort of persons with CKD had been diagnosed by their physicians as having CKD while 29% has a diagnosis of cancer and 82% had a diagnosis of hypertension. For the wider public and health authorities, CKD evokes kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In Spain, the prevalence of KRT is 0.13%. A prevalent view is that for those in whom kidneys fail, the problem is ``solved'' by dialysis or kidney transplantation. However, the main burden of CKD is accelerated aging and all-cause and cardiovascular premature death. CKD is the most prevalent risk factor for lethal COVID-19 and the factor that most increases the risk of death in COVID-19, after old age. Moreover, men and women undergoing KRT still have an annual mortality which is 10-100-fold higher than similar age peers, and life expectancy is shortened by around 40 years for young persons on dialysis and by 15 years for young persons with a functioning kidney graft. CKD is expected to become the fifth global cause of death by 2040 and the second cause of death in Spain before the end of the century, a time when 1 in 4 Spaniards will have CKD. However, by 2022, CKD will become the only top-15 global predicted cause of death that is not supported by a dedicated well-funded CIBER network research structure in Spain. Leading Spanish kidney researchers grouped in the kidney collaborative research network REDINREN have now applied for the RICORS call of collaborative research in Spain with the support of the Spanish Society of Nephrology, ALCER and ONT: RICORS2040 aims to prevent the dire predictions for the global 2040 burden of CKD from becoming true. However, only the highest level of research funding through the CIBER will allow to adequately address the issue before it is too late. (C) 2021 Sociedad Espanola de Nefrologia. The ability of two photons to interfere lies at the heart of many photonic quantum networking concepts and requires that the photons are indistinguishable with sufficient coherence times to resolve the interference signals. However, for solid-state quantum light sources, this can be challenging to achieve as they are in constant interaction with noise sources in their environment. Here, we investigate the noise sources that affect InAs/InP quantum dots emitting in the telecom C-band by comparing their behavior on a wetting layer for Stranski–Krastanov grown quantum dots with a nearly wetting layer-free environment achieved with the droplet epitaxy growth mode. We show that the droplet epitaxy growth mode is beneficial for a quiet environment, leading to 96% of exciton transitions having a coherence time longer than the typical detector resolution of 100 ps, even under non-resonant excitation. We also show that the decay profile indicates the presence of slow dephasing processes, which can be compensated for experimentally. We finally conduct Hong–Ou–Mandel interference measurements between subsequently emitted photons and find a corrected two-photon interference visibility of 98.6 ± 1.6% for droplet-epitaxy grown quantum dots. The understanding of the influence of their surroundings on the quantum optical properties of these emitters is important for their optimization and use in future quantum networking applications.

Teleportation is a fundamental concept of quantum mechanics with an important application in extending the range of quantum communication channels via quantum relay nodes. To be compatible with real-world technology such as secure quantum key distribution over fiber networks, such a relay node should ideally operate at gigahertz clock rates and accept time-bin-encoded qubits in the low-loss telecom band around 1550 nm. Here, we show that In As-In P droplet-epitaxy quantum dots, with their sub-Poissonian emission near 1550 nm, are ideally suited for the realization of this technology. To create the necessary on-demand photon emission at gigahertz clock rates, we develop a flexible-pulsed optical-excitation scheme and demonstrate that the fast driving conditions are compatible with a low multiphoton emission rate. We show further that, even under these driving conditions, photon pairs obtained from the biexciton cascade show an entanglement fidelity close to 90%, comparable to the value obtained under continuous-wave excitation. Using asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers and our photon source, we finally construct a time-bin qubit quantum relay able to receive and send time-bin-encoded photons and demonstrate mean teleportation fidelities of 0.82 ± 0.01, exceeding the classical limit by more than ten standard deviations.
