Prosaposin (PSAP) is a precursor of saposin (SAP), which is present in lysosomal and secreted proteins. PSAP is a member of the SAP-like protein families, which comprise multifunctional proteins. In particular, their antimicrobial activity has been reported. We identified PSAP-like (PsPSAPL) sequences from starry flounder and analysed their expression and antimicrobial activity based on cDNA and amino acid sequences. PsPSAPL showed conservation of three saposin B type domains at high levels, and PsPSAPL mRNA was relatively abundantly distributed in the brain and gills of healthy starry founders. PsPSAPL mRNA showed significant expression changes in response to viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus and Streptococcus parauberis. Synthetic peptides (PsPSAPL-1 and -2), prepared based on amino acid sequences, were used to confirm as well as analyse the antimicrobial activity against bacteria and parasites. Consequently, PsPSAPL-1 and -2 were found to significantly inhibit the growth of various bacteria and kill the Miamiensis avidus. In addition, bacterial biofilm formation was significantly inhibited. Safety was also confirmed by analysing cell haemolysis. These results indicate the immunological function of PsPSAP and the potential antimicrobial activity of the AMPs PsPSAPL-1 and -2.

We assessed the levels of fecal contamination and the originating species of 12 major inland pollutants in the drainage basin of Yeoja Bay. The presence of the human-specific (HF183), ruminant-specific (BacR and Rum-2-Bac), pig-specific (Pig-Bac-2 and Pig-2-Bac), avian-specific (GFD), and gull-specific (Gull2) markers in water samples (n = 34) from 12 inland pollution sources around Yeoja Bay was analyzed. HF183 was detected in 97% of the water samples, and all major inland pollution sources were contaminated with human feces. BacR and Rum-2-Bac were detected in 94% and 11%, respectively, of the water samples. Pig-2-Bac was not detected in the inland pollution sources, but site L5 might be contaminated with swine feces. Gull2 was not detected, whereas GFD was detected in 26% of the water samples. This study highlights the utility of a MST toolbox approach for characterizing the water quality of inland pollution sources and identifying the feces producing species.

The concentrations of total mercury (THg) in different organs of the Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) collected from CCAMLR research blocks in Subarea 88.3 and Division 58.4.1 off the coast of Antarctica were determined. The results revealed THg concentrations of 0.165 ± 0.095 mg/kg (0.023–0.454 mg/kg, wet weight) in the Antarctic toothfish. In muscle, methyl mercury (MeHg) accounted for approximately 40% of the THg. In a comparison analysis, muscle and liver tended to bioaccumulate the highest levels of THg, and both THg and MeHg contents showed correlations with fish length and weight. Compared with international guidelines, fish contained 2.5–6.4% and 4.0–10.3% of the provisional tolerable weekly intake for THg recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and the tolerable weekly intake for MeHg proposed by the European Food Safety Authority, respectively. These results suggest that consumption of the Antarctic toothfish presents no health risk to humans.

The aim of this study is to analyze and reveal similarities and differences between Bundang, Pyungchon and Ilsan as representative new towns in Korea. Each town was constructed during the same period in the 1990s. The study was carried out by following methods of comparison that recognize the aesthetic characteristics of buildings according to the opinion of the inhabitants. The survey was attributively categorized into criteria including, ′problems and appreciations regarding the appearance of buildings′, ′influential elements and plans for the improvement of the aesthetic characteristic of buildings′, and ′improvement systems concerning the aesthetic characteristic of buildings′. The authors can finally derive three important implications from this study: identify the city image and create variety as well as unity regarding the aesthetic characteristic of buildings, recognize the limit of the present architectural guidance, and continue a specific method of study to establish guidance regarding the aesthetic characteristic of buildings.
