Inter-channel crosstalk of burst-mode upstream in XG-PON and TWDM-PON are investigated. Differential optical path loss and ASE noise from 256 ONUs contribute to increasing power penalty. ASE noise filtering mitigates the impairment and ensures negligible penalty.

We investigate switching characteristics of the nonlinear birefringent loop mirror which consists of a symmetric directional coupler, a birefringent fiber, and a symmetry-breaking element that converts linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light, and vice versa. The condition for total reflection in the linear regime is obtained using the Jones matrix formalism, The switching curves have been obtained through numerical computations both in the nondispersive pulse regime and in the soliton-like pulse regime. Parameter values suitable for practical applications of our device as an intensity filter are obtained.

Optical switching using a nonlinear optical loop mirror, which exploits unequal nonlinear phase shifts acquired by linearly and circularly polarized solitons that counterpropagate the loop, is investigated. The device totally reflects small amplitude light waves and transmits maximally switched soliton-like pulses nearly completely. The device works for a fiber loop of birefringence of less than 10 −8 and pulses of width of the order of a few hundred femtoseconds.

We evaluate inter-channel crosstalk level and its power penalty for the wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system employing injection seeding technology. We propose a new laser control algorithm for reducing received power variations at multi-path interface of the injection seeded WDM-PON. And we achieve an improvement of the inter-channel crosstalk level to reduce crosstalk penalty of the system.

This paper investigates the reflection phenomenon and its impact on the transmission of a seeded DWDM link. The factors that influence the choice of acceptable values of the optical return loss and maximum discrete reflectance are discussed and measured data is presented that provides insight into the penalty associated with the optical return loss. It is found that that the values used for optical return loss and maximum discrete reflectance in ITU-T Recommendation G.698.1 and G.959.1 based DWDM links cannot be used in seeded DWDM link specifications due to its bidirectional seeded architecture and the reflective nature of its colour adaptive transmitter at the terminal equipment.

We report observation of noiselike pulse generation in a passively mode-locked fiber laser incorporating the nonlinear birefringent loop mirror (NBLM) which consists of a symmetric coupler and an asymmetrically located 90/spl deg/ rotation element in the loop. In this laser, the noiselike pulse generation results from nonlinear differential filtering due to the polarization-mode-dispersion effect in the NBLM, which is equivalent to nonlinear filtering in the ring laser.

We show that our scheme, which should formally employ a nearly isotropic fiber for a loop, can also have a switching action alternatively with birefringence fiber for the loop and therefore be more practical in an experiment. The device consists of a symmetric coupler, a birefringence fiber loop, and a set of asymmetrically located polarization retarders.
