4. Efficient FPGA Floorplanning for Partial Reconfiguration-Based Applications

Abstract

Partial Reconfiguration (PR) is a technique that allows reconfiguring the FPGA chip at runtime. However, current design support tools require manual floorplanning of the partial modules. Several approaches have been proposed in this field, but only a few of them consider all aspects of PR, like the shape and the aspect ratio of the reconfigurable region. Most of them are defined for old FPGA architectures and have a high computational time. This paper introduces an efficient automatic floorplanning algorithm, which takes into account the heterogeneous architectures of modern FPGA families, as well as PR constraints, introducing the aspect ratio constraint to optimize routing. The algorithm generates possible placements of the partial modules, then applies a recursive pseudo-bipartitioning heuristic search to find the best floorplan. 9. A Smart Platform for Monitoring and Managing Energy Harvesting in Household Systems.

Abstract

To address global warming challenges, industry, transportation, residential, and other sectors must adapt to reduce the greenhouse effect. One promising solution is the use of renewable energy and energy-saving mechanisms. This paper analyzes several renewable energy sources and storage systems, taking into consideration the possibility of integrating them with smart homes. The integration process requires the development of smart home energy management systems coupled with renewable energy and energy storage elements. Furthermore, a real-life solar energy power plant composed of programmable components was designed and mounted on the roof of a single-family residential building. Based on a long-term analysis of its operation, the main advantages and disadvantages of the proposed implementation solution are highlighted, exemplifying the concepts presented in the paper. Being composed of programmable components, which allow the implementation of custom algorithms and monitoring applications to optimize its operation, the system will be used as a prototyping platform in future research. The evaluation of the developed system over a period of one year showed that, even when using a basic implementation such as the one in this paper, significant savings regarding a household's energy consumption can be achieved (36% of the energy bought from the supplier, meaning EUR 545 from a total of EUR 1497). Finally, based on the analysis of the developed prototype system, the main technical challenges that must be addressed in the future to efficiently manage renewable energy storage and use in today's smart homes were identified. Abstract

International audience; The paper focuses on implementation of several different concepts of wise analysis of light electric vehicle propulsion unit testing facility. Firstly, the concept of "digital twin" that represents a simulated replica of a complete testing facility is presented. More, instead of using an off-line simulation environment, the digital twin (DT) is programmed to run using two field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), hence it becomes an online real-time simulation. The second concept is the distribution of the digital twin. The actual unit controller is programed into one FPGA and the machine under test, its load and the power inverter are implemented into a second FPGA. The communication between the two is handled using analog and digital lines, just like the controller would be connected to the real test-bench. The third concept involves the organization of each of the two FPGA programs, based on Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) that facilitates transparency, ease of implementation and minimizes the error in coding the actual test-bench replica and then its controller. Combining all the above mentioned concept into one single lucrative tool, experimentally validated by actual measurements, proves that the concept of using a DT implemented in real-time, without doubt can be used for testing prototypes and their controls regardless of the actual test-bench. Hence, on one hand it is eco-friendly, precise and save testing method and on the other hand, the same DT can be used by researchers and testers in facilities that do not have a test-bench at their disposal.

Abstract

This paper presents an efficient architecture of the Least Mean Square (LMS) adaptive algorithm implemented as a FIR filter on a reconfigurable platform. The architecture of the adaptive filter was developed with a general structure so it can be used in many applications with minimum limitations. Besides general use, the architecture has the advantage of using optimal hardware resources on the chip. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is demonstrated on the noise cancelling application, and the performances are evaluated in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), convergence speed, mean square error (MSE) and hardware usage. Abstract

This paper presents a virtual test-bench for the evaluation of two drivetrains for electric vehicles, consisting of a switched reluctance and a synchronous reluctance motor drive, simulated in real-time on FPGA, coupled via CAN bus with a forward-facing vehicle simulation model. In this way control algorithms can be assessed with results showing up in the vehicle's behaviour, providing a high fidelity hybrid method that combines rapid control prototyping with a real-time simulated plant model. Abstract

The paper deals with the synthesis of a model for the nonlinear human hearing mechanism response. The non-uniform frequency sampling is combined with the interpolation methods to design a FIR filter to approximate the psychophysical data (audiogram). The analysis of the designed filters is achieved in LabVIEW. To evaluate the FIR synthesis the magnitude characteristic and the impulse response for different interpolation methods are compared.
