Seafood by-products from various organisms like fish, shellfish, squids, and bivalves are often thrown away as waste, even though they could be utilized in creating new types of valuable foods. Up to 75% of the entire organism consists of industrial processing wastes, which can lead to a loss of profit and ecological sustainability if natural resources are not recycled efficiently. Various types of fish parts and byproducts, such as heads, viscera, skin, bones, scales, exoskeletons, pens, ink, and clam shells, can be categorized as valuable waste based on their weight percentages, which vary depending on the species and taxonomy. This review paper delves into the extraction and valorization strategies of seafood by-products, with a focus on transforming waste into valuable resources. Marine by-products can provide bioactive substances such as collagen, peptides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, chitin, and catalysts for biodiesel production. This review highlights the utilization of innovative techniques like microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extraction as well as supercritical fluid extraction and subcritical water extraction to extract bioactive compounds from seafood waste efficiently. This section also discusses the optimization of extraction processes to enhance efficiency and yield. Furthermore, the paper explores the potential applications of seafood by-products across various industries, emphasizing sustainable resource utilization and the creation of high-value products to be applied in our current circular economy.

Spirulina sp. is a potential microalgae. One of the potentials that continue to be developed, such as edible oil. Various extraction methods can obtain Spirulina oil content, i.e., the osmotic shock method as a green extraction method. Each method used can affect the fatty acid components. Not many studies have reported the physicochemical characteristics of oil extract Spirulina using the osmotic-shock method. This study analyzes the physicochemical characteristics of crude oil extract Spirulina sp. extracted using the osmotic-shock method. The study used a simple, completely randomized design with treatment extraction times of 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance and Duncan's test (α5%). The results showed that the treatment level of 60 minutes produced the lowest physicochemical characteristics and met the International Fish Oil Standards, where peroxide value 1.49±0.0089 mEq/Kg, iodine value 71.37±0.0035 g I2/g, saponification value 502.69±0.0069 mg KOH/g, acid value 0.049±0.0011 mg KOH/g, and Free Fatty Acid 0.0102±0.0003%. The total concentration of Saturated Fatty Acids is 36.18%, monounsaturated fatty Acids 7.72%, and polyunsaturated fatty Acids 49.41%. The fatty acid components are oleic acid/ω-9, linoleic acid/ω-6, linolenic acid/ω-3, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. The presence of EPA and DHA in the crude oil extract of Spirulina sp. showed potential for development as edible oil. The physical profile of Spirulina sp. oil extract obtained by the osmotic-shock method meets International Fish Oil Standards.

The study of natural products from marine-derived fungi has been interesting tense to researchers as drug discovery sources. Marine fungus from West Sumatera, Indonesia repeatedly showed their potential for cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic activity against HT29 colon cancer cells of each fraction of ethyl acetate extracts from Aspergillus nomius NC06 derived from marine sponge Neopetrosia chaliniformis. A. nomius was cultivated with rice as a growth medium and extracted with ethyl acetate solvent and evaporated in vacuo to obtain ethyl acetate extract. Furthermore, the compounds of ethyl acetate extract were separated with the VLC (Vacuum Liquide Chromatography) method. Five fractions were obtained, which further investigated their cytotoxic activity against HT29 colon cancer cells by using an MTT assay. The result showed that fractions I and III were categorized as potential fractions due to their IC50 value of 13.12 ± 0.39 μg/mL and 2.59 ± 0.19 μg/mL, respectively. It was also supported by ANOVA to measure the effect of each concentration (0.1; 1; 10; 100 μg/mL) of each fraction on the viability percentage of HT29 cells with p < 0.005.

Tuna is one of the fish source of nutrition for humans because it contains high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for health. Tuna can be processed into various products, such as tuna-shredded. But it still has a drawback, i.e., the lower-fiber content. To enrich the fiber of tuna-shredded, fortification with banana blossoms can be developed as functional food such as preventing gout arthritis. The aims of this study were to develop a diversified product of tuna-shredded fortified banana blossoms and to determine the antioxidant activity in vitro and anti-arthritis gout through inhibition of the xanthine oxidase (XO) enzyme in silico. The method used was a simple, completely randomized design. The formulation of tuna-shredded used fortification and active compounds analyzed by LC-HRMS. The antioxidant activity was analyzed by the DPPH. Inhibition of the XO enzyme was analyzed by molecular docking in silico. The results showed that tuna-shredded extract contained 32 compounds, which had total phenolic was 0.00134 mg GAE/g, total flavonoid was 0.0006670 mg QE/g, and IC50 was 4.38 ppm. Ferulic acid had the potential to inhibit the XO enzyme with binding affinity was -9.70 kcal/mol through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions.

Spirulina platensis is a type of Cyanobacterium microalgae that forms multicellular helicoidal filaments. Spirulina platensis contains primary and secondary metabolites. The type and amount of the active compound Spirulina platensis depends on the method of extraction, fractionation, and isolation. So far, there are not much research data related to the active compound of Spirulina platensis extract cultured on Walne. The purpose of this study was to use of thin layer chromatography (TLC) method to separate flavonoids from Spirulina platensis biomass extract cultured on Walne media and the activity of a-glucosidase enzyme inhibition using biomass, crude extract, active fraction of flavonoids and phycocyanins from Spirulina platensis. This research method is descriptive experimental, which the Spirulina platensis is cultured on 80 g/L NaNO3 modified Walne media, extracted by maceration, fractionated by TLC and isolated the active compound by Preparative TLC (PTLC). The analysis included fraction and isolation of flavonoids from Spirulina platensis. The results showed that the TLC could be used to identify the active compound of Spirulina platensis extract cultured on Walne. Fractionation of Spirulina platensis extract using stationary phase silica gel Si 60 GF254 and the best mobile phase with a combination of chloroform:ethyl acetate (6:4) and an Rf1 value of 0.58; Rf2 0.71; and Rf3 0.83, as well as yellow-orange spots. Isolation of the active compound of Spirulina platensis extract using PLTC stationary phase silica gel Si 60 PF254 and the best mobile phase combination eluent chloroform:ethyl acetate (9:1). RF value of Rf2 0.57; Rf3 0.86; and Rf4 0.93 with dark yellow-brown spots. The color of the spots from the PLTC results shows that the active compounds of Spirulina platensis extract are flavonoid compounds. Biomass, crude extract, phycocyanine extract and flavonoids from Spirulina do not have inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase enzyme. Jenis dan jumlah senyawa aktif Spirulina platensis tergantung pada metode ekstraksi, fraksinasi dan isolasi. Sejauh ini belum banyak data hasil penelitian terkait senyawa aktif ekstrak biomassa Spirulina platensis yang dikultur pada media Walne. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu penggunaan metode kromatografi lapis tipis (KLT) untuk memisahkan flavonoid ekstrak biomassa Spirulina platensis yang dikultur pada media Walne serta aktivitas inhibisi enzim α-glukosidase menggunakan biomassa, ekstrak kasar, fraksi aktif flavonoid dan fikosianin dari Spirulina platensis. Metode penelitian ini adalah eksprimental deksriptif dimana mikroalga Spirulina platensis dikultur pada media Walne modifikasi 80 g/L NaNO3, diekstraksi dengan maserasi, difraksinasi dengan KLT dan diisolasi senyawa aktif dengan KLT Preparatif (KLTP). Analisis yang dilakukan meliputi analisis fraksi dan isolasi flavonoid dari Spirulina platensis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan metode KLT dapat digunakan untuk mengindetifikasi senyawa aktif ekstrak Spirulina platensis yang dikultur pada media Walne. Fraksinasi ekstrak Spirulina platensis menggunakan fase diam silika gel Si 60 GF254 dan fase gerak kombinasi eluen terbaik kloroform:etil asetat (6:4) dan nilai Rf1 0,58; Rf2 0,71; dan Rf3 0,83, serta bercak berwarna kuning-oranye. Isolasi senyawa aktif ekstrak Spirulina platensis menggunakan KLTP fase diam silika gel Si 60 PF254 dan fase gerak kombinasi eluen terbaik kloroform:etil asetat (9:1). Nilai Rf2 0,57; Rf3 0,86; dan Rf4 0,93 dengan bercak berwarna kuning-cokelat gelap. Warna bercak hasil KLTP menunjukkan komponen senyawa aktif ekstrak Spirulina platensis berupa senyawa golongan flavonoid. Biomassa, ekstrak kasar, ekstrak fikosianin dan flavonoid dari Spirulina tidak memiliki aktivitas penghambatan terhadap enzim α-glukosidase.

Etlingera acanthodes A.D. Poulsen is a ginger endemic to Sulawesi, and there is no research on its essential oils. The Essential oil information of E. acanthodes is the first reported and has a high novelty. The objective of the study is to analyze the component of E. acanthodes essential oils, which are endemic to Sulawesi. The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves, stems, flowers, and rhizomes of E. acanthodes A.D. Poulsen. The samples were analyzed by GC-MS method using the Agilent Technologies 7890 Gas Chromatograph with Auto Sampler. Data analysis of essential oils of GC-MS results were determined based on comparing mass spectra from the NIST 2005 v.2.0 library and Wiley 7 library 2003. The oils of E. acanthodes contain terpenoids, phenolic, steroids, and other compounds. Phenolic compounds (39.56%) predominate in leaves, other compounds (41.25%) on stems, diterpenes hydrocarbons (77.3%) in flowers, and other compounds (43.5%) and steroids (40.4%) on rhizomes. The five main compounds of E. acanthodes are Neophytadiene; (+)-De-O-Methylcentrolobine; Cholest-5-En-3-Ol,23-Ethyl-,(3. Beta.23S)-; 9,12-Octadecadienoic Acid, Phenol, 2-ethyl-. The analysis found several compounds that can be used for industry and medicine in the future.
