1. Gate-defined flat-band charge carrier confinement in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract: Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) near the magic angle is an interesting platform to study correlated electronic phases. These phases are gate-tunable and are closely related to the presence of flat electronic bands, isolated by single-particle band gaps. This allows electrostatically controlled confinement of charge carriers in the flat bands to explore the interplay between confinement, band renormalisation, electron-electron interactions and the moir\'e superlattice, potentially revealing key mechanisms underlying these electronic phases. Here, we show gate-controlled flat-band charge carrier confinement in near-magic-angle tBLG, resulting in well-tunable Coulomb blockade resonances arising from the charging of electrostatically defined islands in tBLG. Coulomb resonance measurements allow to study magnetic field-induced quantum oscillations in the density of states of the source-drain reservoirs, providing insight into the gate-tunable Fermi surfaces of tBLG. Comparison with tight-binding calculations emphasises the importance of displacement-field-induced band renormalisation, which is crucial for future advanced gate-tunable quantum devices and circuits in tBLG., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are one of the most common traumatic injuries and may result in significant morbidity and mortality. Despite growing evidence, technological advances and increasing acceptance, surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) remains not uniformly considered in trauma centers. Indications, contraindications, appropriate timing, surgical approaches and utilized implants are part of an ongoing debate. The present position paper, which is endorsed by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), and supported by the Chest Wall Injury Society, aims to provide a review of the literature investigating the use of SSRF in rib fracture management to develop graded position statements, providing an updated guide and reference for SSRF. METHODS: This position paper was developed according to the WSES methodology. A steering committee performed the literature review and drafted the position paper. An international panel of experts then critically revised the manuscript and discussed it in detail, to develop a consensus on the position statements. RESULTS: A total of 287 studies (systematic reviews, randomized clinical trial, prospective and retrospective comparative studies, case series, original articles) have been selected from an initial pool of 9928 studies. Thirty-nine graded position statements were put forward to address eight crucial aspects of SSRF: surgical indications, contraindications, optimal timing of surgery, preoperative imaging evaluation, rib fracture sites for surgical fixation, management of concurrent thoracic injuries, surgical approach, stabilization methods and material selection. CONCLUSION: This consensus document addresses the key focus questions on surgical treatment of rib fractures. The expert recommendations clarify current evidences on SSRF indications, timing, operative planning, approaches and techniques, with the aim to guide clinicians in optimizing the management of rib fractures, to improve patient outcomes and direct future research.

3. Controlling few-body reaction pathways using a Feshbach resonance

Abstract: Gaining control over chemical reactions on the quantum level is a central goal of the modern field of cold and ultracold chemistry. Here, we demonstrate a novel method to coherently steer reaction flux of a three-body recombination process across different product spin channels. For this, we employ a magnetically-tunable Feshbach resonance to admix, in a controlled way, a specific spin state to the reacting collision complex. This allows for the control of the reaction flux into the admixed spin channel, which can be used to significantly change the reaction products. Furthermore, we also investigate the influence of an Efimov resonance on the reaction dynamics. We find that while the Efimov resonance can be used to globally enhance three-body recombination, the relative flux between the reaction channels remains unchanged. Our control scheme is general and can be extended to other reaction processes. 4. Spin hierarchy in van der Waals molecule formation via ultracold three-body recombination

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the product-state distribution of weakly bound diatomic van der Waals molecules via ultracold three-body recombination of bosonic alkali atoms. We find a two-level hierarchy of spin propensity rules at zero magnetic field. The primary propensity rule states that nearly all molecular products conserve the total hyperfine spin of reactant atomic pairs, while molecular products not conserving the total spin are highly suppressed. For the dominant molecular products, there is a secondary propensity to conserve certain spin components of the reactant pair such as the atomic hyperfine spins, or the total electronic or nuclear spins. The second propensity varies across species and depends fundamentally on the interplay between effective electronic exchange and hyperfine interactions. The spin sensitivity of product-state distribution can potentially open up new avenues for controlling state-to-state reaction rates in ultracold three-body recombination.

5. Association of PHACTR1 with Coronary Artery Calcium Differs by Sex and Cigarette Smoking.

Abstract: Background: Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and is a complex heritable trait with both genetic and environmental risk factors, including sex and smoking. Methods: We performed genome-wide association (GWA) analyses for CAC among all participants and stratified by sex in the COPDGene study (n = 6144 participants of European ancestry and n = 2589 participants of African ancestry) with replication in the Diabetes Heart Study (DHS). We adjusted for age, sex, current smoking status, BMI, diabetes, self-reported high blood pressure, self-reported high cholesterol, and genetic ancestry (as summarized by principal components computed within each racial group). For the significant signals from the GWA analyses, we examined the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) by sex interactions, stratified by smoking status (current vs. former), and tested for a SNP by smoking status interaction on CAC. Results: We identified genome-wide significant associations for CAC in the chromosome 9p21 region [CDKN2B-AS1] among all COPDGene participants (p = 7.1 × 10-14) and among males (p = 1.0 × 10-9), but the signal was not genome-wide significant among females (p = 6.4 × 10-6). For the sex stratified GWA analyses among females, the chromosome 6p24 region [PHACTR1] had a genome-wide significant association (p = 4.4 × 10-8) with CAC, but this signal was not genome-wide significant among all COPDGene participants (p = 1.7 × 10-7) or males (p = 0.03). There was a significant interaction for the SNP rs9349379 in PHACTR1 with sex (p = 0.02), but the interaction was not significant for the SNP rs10757272 in CDKN2B-AS1 with sex (p = 0.21). In addition, PHACTR1 had a stronger association with CAC among current smokers (p = 6.2 × 10-7) than former smokers (p = 7.5 × 10-3) and the SNP by smoking status interaction was marginally significant (p = 0.03). CDKN2B-AS1 had a strong association with CAC among both former (p = 7.7 × 10-8) and current smokers (p = 1.7 × 10-7) and the SNP by smoking status interaction was not significant (p = 0.40). Conclusions: Among current and former smokers of European ancestry in the COPDGene study, we identified a genome-wide significant association in the chromosome 6p24 region [PHACTR1] with CAC among females, but not among males. This region had a significant SNP by sex and SNP by smoking interaction on CAC.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has revolutionized the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion (LVO), but its efficacy and safety in medium vessel occlusion (MeVO) remain less explored. This multicenter, retrospective study aims to investigate the incidence and clinical outcomes of vessel perforations (confirmed by extravasation during an angiographic series) during MT for AIS caused by MeVO. METHODS: Data were collected from 37 academic centers across North America, Asia, and Europe between September 2017 and July 2021. A total of 1373 AIS patients with MeVO underwent MT. Baseline characteristics, procedural details, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The incidence of vessel perforation was 4.8% (66/1373). Notably, our analysis indicates variations in perforation rates across different arterial segments: 8.9% in M3 segments, 4.3% in M2 segments, and 8.3% in A2 segments (p = 0.612). Abstract: A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decay $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^+\pi^-) \mu^+\mu^-$ is performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based on $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient $C_9$, responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a $2.1\sigma$ deviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients $C_{10}$, $C_{9}'$ and $C_{10}'$ are all in better agreement than $C_{9}$ with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of $1.5\sigma$. Abstract: The trustworthiness of AI applications has been the subject of recent research and is also addressed in the EU's recently adopted AI Regulation. The currently emerging foundation models in the field of text, speech and image processing offer completely new possibilities for developing AI applications. This whitepaper shows how the trustworthiness of an AI application developed with foundation models can be evaluated and ensured. For this purpose, the application-specific, risk-based approach for testing and ensuring the trustworthiness of AI applications, as developed in the 'AI Assessment Catalog - Guideline for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence' by Fraunhofer IAIS, is transferred to the context of foundation models. Special consideration is given to the fact that specific risks of foundation models can have an impact on the AI application and must also be taken into account when checking trustworthiness. Chapter 1 of the white paper explains the fundamental relationship between foundation models and AI applications based on them in terms of trustworthiness. Chapter 2 provides an introduction to the technical construction of foundation models and Chapter 3 shows how AI applications can be developed based on them. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the resulting risks regarding trustworthiness. Abstract: Electronic nematic order has been reported in a rich landscape of materials, encompassing not only a range of intertwined correlated and topological phenomena, but also different underlying lattice symmetries. Motivated by these findings, we investigate the behavior of electronic nematicity as the spherical symmetry of three-dimensional (3D) space is systematically lowered by the lattice environment. We consider all 32 crystallographic point groups as well as 4 major classes of quasicrystalline point groups, given the recent observations of electronic phases of interest in quasicrystalline materials and artificial twisted quasicrystals. Valuable insights are gained by establishing a mapping between the five-component charge-quadrupolar nematic order parameter of the electronic fluid and the 3D tensorial order parameter of nematic liquid crystals. We find that a uniaxial nematic state is only generically realized in polyhedral point groups (icosahedral and cubic), with the nematic director pointing along different sets of rotational symmetry axes. Interestingly, icosahedral point groups are the only ones in which the five nematic order parameter components transform as the same irreducible representation, making them the closest analog of 3D isotropic nematics. In axial point groups, one of the nematic components is always condensed, whereas the other four components decompose into an in-plane and an out-of-plane nematic doublet, resulting in biaxial nematic ground states. Because these two nematic doublets behave as $Z_q$-clock order parameters, this allows us to identify the types of crystals and quasicrystals that can host interesting electronic nematic phenomena enabled by the critical properties of the $q\geq 4$ clock model, such as emergent continuous nematic fluctuations in 3D, critical phases with quasi-long-range nematic order in 2D, and Ashkin-Teller nematicity in 2D., Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: The valley degree of freedom in honeycomb crystals such as 2D semiconductors, graphene and bilayer graphene is a promising carrier of quantum information alongside spin and charge. This is all the more true since gate-controlled single-particle quantum dots (QDs) have been demonstrated in bilayer graphene (BLG), paving the way for the realisation of spin and valley qubits. Although long spin relaxation times have recently been reported in BLG QDs, nothing is known about single-particle valley lifetimes. Here we report single-particle valley relaxation times ($T_1$ times) exceeding several microseconds in electrostatically defined BLG QDs. The observed dependence of $T_1$ on the perpendicular magnetic field can be understood qualitatively and quantitatively by a model in which $T_1$ is limited by electron-phonon coupling. 20. A critical nematic phase with pseudogap-like behavior in twisted bilayers

Abstract: The crystallographic restriction theorem constrains two-dimensional nematicity to display either Ising ($Z_{2}$) or three-state-Potts ($Z_{3}$) critical behaviors, both of which are dominated by amplitude fluctuations. Here, we use group theory and microscopic modeling to show that this constraint is circumvented in a $30^{\circ}$-twisted hexagonal bilayer due to its emergent quasicrystalline symmetries. We find a critical phase dominated by phase fluctuations of a $Z_{6}$ nematic order parameter and bounded by two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions, which displays only quasi-long-range nematic order. The electronic spectrum in the critical phase displays a thermal pseudogap-like behavior, whose properties depend on the anomalous critical exponent. We also show that an out-of-plane magnetic field induces nematic phase fluctuations that suppress the two BKT transitions via a mechanism analogous to the Hall viscoelastic response of the lattice, giving rise to a putative nematic quantum critical point with emergent continuous symmetry. Abstract: INTRODUCTION: First pass effect (FPE), achievement of complete recanalization (mTICI 2c/3) with a single pass, is a significant predictor of favorable outcomes for endovascular treatment (EVT) in large vessel occlusion stroke (LVO). However, data concerning the impact on functional outcomes and predictors of FPE in medium vessel occlusions (MeVO) are scarce. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an international retrospective study on MeVO cases. Multivariable logistic modeling was used to establish independent predictors of FPE. Clinical and safety outcomes were compared between the two study groups (FPE vs non-FPE) using logistic regression models. Good outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale 0-2 at 3 months. RESULTS: Eight hundred thirty-six patients with a final mTICI ⩾ 2b were included in this analysis. FPE was observed in 302 patients (36.1%). In multivariable analysis, hypertension (aOR 1.55, 95% CI 1.10-2.20) and lower baseline NIHSS score (aOR 0.95, 95% CI 0.93-0.97) were independently associated with an FPE. Good outcomes were more common in the FPE versus non-FPE group (72.8% vs 52.8%), and FPE was independently associated with favorable outcome (aOR 2.20, 95% CI 1.59-3.05). 90-day mortality and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) were significantly lower in the FPE group, 0.43 (95% CI, 0.25-0.72) and 0.55 (95% CI, 0.39-0.77), respectively. CONCLUSION: Over 2/3 of patients with MeVOs and FPE in our cohort had a favorable outcome at 90 days. FPE is independently associated with favorable outcomes, it may reduce the risk of any intracranial hemorrhage, and 3-month mortality.

Abstract: The volume-corrected mitotic index (M/V-Index) was shown to provide prognostic value in invasive breast carcinomas. However, despite its prognostic significance, it is not established as the standard method for assessing aggressive biological behaviour, due to the high additional workload associated with determining the epithelial proportion. In this work, we show that using a deep learning pipeline solely trained with an annotation-free, immunohistochemistry-based approach, provides accurate estimations of epithelial segmentation in canine breast carcinomas. We compare our automatic framework with the manually annotated M/V-Index in a study with three board-certified pathologists. Our results indicate that the deep learning-based pipeline shows expert-level performance, while providing time efficiency and reproducibility.

28. Local condensation of charge-$4e$ superconductivity at a nematic domain wall

Abstract: In the fluctuation regime that precedes the onset of pairing in multi-component superconductors, such as nematic and chiral superconductors, the normal state is generally unstable towards the formation of charge-$4e$ order $-$ an exotic quantum state in which electrons form coherent quartets rather than Cooper pairs. However, charge-$4e$ order is often suppressed by other competing composite orders, such as nematics. Importantly, the formation of nematic domains is unavoidable due to the long-range strains generated, leading to one-dimensional regions where the competing nematic order is suppressed. Here, we employ a real-space variational approach to demonstrate that, in such nematic domain walls, charge-$4e$ order is locally condensed via a vestigial-order mechanism. 29. Precise photoexcitation measurement of Tan's contact in the entire BCS-BEC crossover

Abstract: We study two-body correlations in a spin-balanced ultracold harmonically trapped Fermi gas of $^6$Li atoms in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the Bose-Einstein-Condensate (BEC) regime. For this, we precisely measure Tan's contact using a novel method based on photoexcitation of atomic pairs, which was recently proposed by Wang et al. [Phys. Rev. A 104 063309 (2021)]. We map out the contact in the entire phase diagram of the BCS-BEC crossover for various temperatures and interaction strengths, probing regions in phase-space that have not been investigated yet. Our measurements reach an uncertainty of $\approx 2 \%$ and thus represent a precise quantitative benchmark. We compare our data to theoretical predictions and interpolations and localize the regions in phase space where the latter give valid results. In regions where the contact is already well known we find excellent agreement with our measurements. Thus, our results demonstrate that photoinduced loss is a precise probe to measure quantum correlations in a strongly interacting Fermi gas., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Translational medicine has been a buzzword for over two decades. The concept was intended to be lofty, to reflect a new bench-to-bedside approach to basic and clinical research that would bridge fields, close gaps, accelerate innovation, and shorten the time and effort it takes to bring novel technologies from basic discovery to clinical application. Has this approach been successful and lived up to its promise? Despite incredible scientific advances and innovations developed within academia, successful clinical translation into real-world solutions has been difficult. This has been particularly challenging within the pulmonary field, because there have been fewer U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs and higher failure rates for pulmonary therapies than with other common disease areas. The American Thoracic Society convened a working group with the goal of identifying major challenges related to the commercialization of technologies within the pulmonary space and opportunities to enhance this process. A survey was developed and administered to 164 participants within the pulmonary arena. This report provides a summary of these survey results. Importantly, this report identifies a number of poorly recognized challenges that exist in pulmonary academic settings, which likely contribute to diminished efficiency of commercialization efforts, ultimately hindering the rate of successful clinical translation. Because many innovations are initially developed in academic settings, this is a global public health issue that impacts the entire American Thoracic Society community. This report also summarizes key resources and opportunities and provides recommendations to enhance successful commercialization of pulmonary technologies.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy is widely adopted across nearly all surgical subspecialties in the elective setting. Initially finding indication in minor abdominal emergencies, it has gradually become the standard approach in the majority of elective general surgery procedures. Despite many technological advances and increasing acceptance, the laparoscopic approach remains underutilized in emergency general surgery and in abdominal trauma. Emergency laparotomy continues to carry a high morbidity and mortality. In recent years, there has been a growing interest from emergency and trauma surgeons in adopting minimally invasive surgery approaches in the acute surgical setting. The present position paper, supported by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), aims to provide a review of the literature to reach a consensus on the indications and benefits of a laparoscopic-first approach in patients requiring emergency abdominal surgery for general surgery emergencies or abdominal trauma. METHODS: This position paper was developed according to the WSES methodology. A steering committee performed the literature review and drafted the position paper. An international panel of 54 experts then critically revised the manuscript and discussed it in detail, to develop a consensus on a position statement. RESULTS: A total of 323 studies (systematic review and meta-analysis, randomized clinical trial, retrospective comparative cohort studies, case series) have been selected from an initial pool of 7409 studies. Evidence demonstrates several benefits of the laparoscopic approach in stable patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery for general surgical emergencies or abdominal trauma. The selection of a stable patient seems to be of paramount importance for a safe adoption of a laparoscopic approach. In hemodynamically stable patients, the laparoscopic approach was found to be safe, feasible and effective as a therapeutic tool or helpful to identify further management steps and needs, resulting in improved outcomes, regardless of conversion. Appropriate patient selection, surgeon experience and rigorous minimally invasive surgical training, remain crucial factors to increase the adoption of laparoscopy in emergency general surgery and abdominal trauma. CONCLUSIONS: The WSES expert panel suggests laparoscopy as the first approach for stable patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery for general surgery emergencies and abdominal trauma.

33. Do smaller P300 amplitudes in schizophrenia result from larger variability in temporal processing?

Abstract: Abstract The P3b is a prominent event-related potential (ERP) with maximal amplitude between 250 ms and 500 ms after the onset of a rare target stimulus within a sequence of standard non-target stimuli (oddball paradigm). Several studies found reduced P3b amplitudes in patients with schizophrenia compared to neurotypicals. Our work and the literature suggest that temporal imprecision may play a large pathophysiological role in schizophrenia. Here, we investigated whether reduced P3b amplitudes result from reduced neural activity (power) or temporal imprecision (inter-trial phase coherence; ITC) in delta and theta bands, using two EEG datasets from different studies with different oddball paradigms (Study 1: 19 patients with schizophrenia and 17 matched controls, Study 2: 26 patients and 26 controls). Both studies revealed typical P3b ERP components with smaller amplitudes in patients. Reduced ITC in patients was found in the delta band, which correlated with P3b peak amplitudes for all participant groups (ρ = 0.58–0.89). In Study 1, we also found significant differences between patients and controls in ITC in the theta band, which also correlated with P3b peak amplitudes (patients’ ρ = 0.64, controls’ ρ = 0.54). This was not found in Study 2. The results indicate that P3b amplitude reduction in patients with schizophrenia is linked to a reduction in temporal precision of neural activity. These results expand the notion of imprecision in temporal processing at phenomenological, psychological, and neurological levels that have been related to disturbances of the sense of self. They confirm that temporal imprecision may be more important than the reduction of neural activity itself.

34. Close relationships with caregivers as protective factor for the mental health and functioning of war-affected Congolese youth

Abstract: Abstract Background Supportive social connections are a crucial determinant of the mental health and adjustment of youth in conflict-torn regions. Conflict-affected youth face particular risks to their well-being due to high levels of trauma exposure and perpetration of violent acts as members of armed groups and post-conflict discrimination. However, little is known about the possible protective role of close relationships with caregivers in the aftermath of trauma. This study examined whether a higher perceived quality of relationships with caregivers would attenuate the associations between exposure to traumatic experiences and four indicators of adjustment (posttraumatic stress symptoms [PTSS], emotional problems, behavioural problems, criminal behaviour) in a sample of 268 war-affected youth (61.2% male, Mage = 16.31 years) living in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. More than half of the present sample (56.7%) were former members of armed groups. Methods Data were collected using quantitative structured interviews and analyzed through regression models using the PROCESS macro. Results Higher cumulative trauma exposure was significantly related to higher levels of PTSS and emotional problems, while more frequent perpetration of war-related violence was significantly related to higher levels of PTSS, behavioural problems, and criminal behavior. The perceived quality of relationships with caregivers significantly moderated the associations between youth’s cumulative trauma exposure and all four outcomes. At higher perceived quality of relationships with caregivers, the associations between trauma exposure and emotional problems, behavioural problems, and criminal behaviour were no longer significant and the association with PTSS was significantly weakened. Higher perceived quality of relationships with caregivers was also directly significantly related to lower levels of mental health problems and criminal behaviour. Conclusions The findings suggest that interventions that focus on strengthening relationships with caregivers are crucial for supporting the mental health and functioning of youth who experienced and perpetrated war-related violence.

Abstract: Abstract Background Rib fractures are one of the most common traumatic injuries and may result in significant morbidity and mortality. Despite growing evidence, technological advances and increasing acceptance, surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) remains not uniformly considered in trauma centers. Indications, contraindications, appropriate timing, surgical approaches and utilized implants are part of an ongoing debate. The present position paper, which is endorsed by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), and supported by the Chest Wall Injury Society, aims to provide a review of the literature investigating the use of SSRF in rib fracture management to develop graded position statements, providing an updated guide and reference for SSRF. Methods This position paper was developed according to the WSES methodology. A steering committee performed the literature review and drafted the position paper. An international panel of experts then critically revised the manuscript and discussed it in detail, to develop a consensus on the position statements. Results A total of 287 studies (systematic reviews, randomized clinical trial, prospective and retrospective comparative studies, case series, original articles) have been selected from an initial pool of 9928 studies. Thirty-nine graded position statements were put forward to address eight crucial aspects of SSRF: surgical indications, contraindications, optimal timing of surgery, preoperative imaging evaluation, rib fracture sites for surgical fixation, management of concurrent thoracic injuries, surgical approach, stabilization methods and material selection. Conclusion This consensus document addresses the key focus questions on surgical treatment of rib fractures. The expert recommendations clarify current evidences on SSRF indications, timing, operative planning, approaches and techniques, with the aim to guide clinicians in optimizing the management of rib fractures, to improve patient outcomes and direct future research.

36. Visual imagination can influence visual perception – towards an experimental paradigm to measure imagination

Abstract: Abstract During visual imagination, a perceptual representation is activated in the absence of sensory input. This is sometimes described as seeing with the mind’s eye. A number of physiological studies indicate that the brain uses more or less the same neural resources for visual perception of sensory information and visual imagination. The intensity of visual imagination is typically assessed with questionnaires, while more objective measures are missing. Aim of the present study was, to test a new experimental paradigm that may allow to objectively quantify imagination. For this, we used priming and adaptation effects during observation of ambiguous figures. Our perception of an ambiguous stimulus is unstable and alternates spontaneously between two possible interpretations. If we first observe an unambiguous stimulus variant (the conditioning stimulus), the subsequently presented ambiguous stimulus can either be perceived in the same way as the test stimulus (priming effect) or in the opposite way (adaptation effect) as a function of the conditioning time. We tested for these conditioning effects (priming and adaptation) using an ambiguous Necker Cube and an ambiguous Letter /Number stimulus as test stimuli and unambiguous variants thereof as conditioning stimuli. In a second experimental condition, we tested whether the previous imagination of an unambiguous conditioning stimulus variant – instead of its observation – can have similar conditioning effects on the subsequent test stimulus. We found no systematic conditioning effect on the group level, neither for the two stimulus types (Necker Cube stimuli and Letter /Number stimuli) nor for the two conditions (Real and Imaginary). However, significant correlations between effects of Real and Imaginary Condition were observed for both stimulus types. The absence of conditioning effects at the group level may be explained by using only one conditioning time, which may fit with individual priming and adaptation constants of some of our participants but not of others. Our strong correlation results indicate that observers with clear conditioning effects have about the same type (priming or adaptation) and intensity of imaginary conditioning effects. As a consequence, not only past perceptual experiences but also past imaginations can influence our current percepts. This is further confirmation that the mechanisms underlying perception and imagination are similar. Our post-hoc qualitative observations from three self-defined aphantasic observers indicate that our paradigm may be a promising objective measure to identify aphantasia.

Abstract: Abstract Background The optimal regimen for 177Lu-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen-targeted radioligand therapy, including treatment intervals, remains under study, with evidence suggesting shorter intervals could benefit patients with high disease volume and rapid progression. This retrospective analysis evaluated treatment toxicity, PSA response, PSA-progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), and overall survival (OS) in matched cohorts of mCRPC patients receiving 177Lu-PSMA-RLT at 4-week versus 6-week intervals. Results A PSA response (PSA decline ≥ 50%) was achieved in 47.8% and 21.7% of patients in the 4-week and 6-week treatment interval groups, respectively (p = 0.12). There was a trend towards longer PSA-PFS in the 4-week group compared to the 6-week group (median PSA-PFS, 26.0 weeks vs. 18.0 weeks; HR 0.6; p = 0.2). Although not statistically significant, there was a trend towards shorter OS in the 4-week group compared to the 6-week group (median OS, 15.1 months vs. 18.4 months; HR 1.3; p = 0.5). The 4-week group had a significantly greater decrease in leucocyte and platelet counts compared to the 6-week group (38.5% vs. 18.2% and 26.7% vs. 10.7%; p = 0.047 and p = 0.02). Severe adverse events were modest in both groups. Conclusions Intensifying treatment intervals from 6 weeks to 4 weeks showed some improvements in PSA response and PSA-PFS for mCRPC patients, but did not significantly affect OS. Additionally, bone marrow reserve was significantly reduced with the intensified regimen. Therefore, the overall benefit remains uncertain, and further prospective studies are needed to compare 4-week and 6-week intervals regarding toxicity, treatment response, and outcome.

Abstract: Diverse actors within and outside the academic system increasingly call upon scientists to engage with the public through science communication as part of their academic work. This raises the question of how these actors' demands can and should be met in practice. At the conference on “Perspectives on science communication”, which took place on 27 May 2024, at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, interested scientists and communicators from the Leibniz Association came together to reflect on the strategic development of the field of science communication. The focus was on the exchange of realistic goals, important actions and the actors responsible for the further development of the field and practice of science communication. These three topics were discussed in the context of a keynote speech and a panel discussion, as well as with regard to specific forms of interaction between science and society, including informative, dialogic and participatory formats of science communication. The discussions reveal a diversity of goals scientists can aim for, but also a multitude of action areas that need to be addressed by a number of actors to achieve these goals. Goals particularly hinted at an increasing, yet-to-be-defined quantity of communication, including contents related to informing about facts in societal debates, engaging in democratic dialogue and encouraging participation of citizens in research to increase innovation in science, but also process-related goals such as building partnerships, communicating transparently or providing support for scientists. Action areas to achieve these goals are diverse and regard strengthening recognition and reputation, supporting and protecting scientists, providing temporal and financial resources for science communication and changing researcher’s attitudes. In terms of actors, conference participants hinted at the diverse roles of different actors, focusing the discussion on actors in academia, politics and administration, civil society as well as boundary organisations such as the media as key actors to further advance the topic of science communication. This conference report elaborates the results related to these three topics and, thus, creates the basis for an in-depth discussion of the results in Germany and internationally.

Abstract: Background and Purpose The management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to distal medium vessel occlusion (DMVO) remains uncertain, particularly in comparing the effectiveness of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) plus mechanical thrombectomy (MT) versus IVT alone. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy in DMVO patients treated with either MT-IVT or IVT alone. Methods This multinational study analyzed data from 37 centers across North America, Asia, and Europe. Patients with AIS due to DMVO were included, with data collected from September 2017 to July 2023. The primary outcome was functional independence, with secondary outcomes including mortality and safety measures such as types of intracerebral hemorrhage. Results The study involved 1,057 patients before matching, and 640 patients post-matching. Functional outcomes at 90 days showed no significant difference between groups in achieving good functional recovery (modified Rankin Scale 0–1 and 0–2), with adjusted odds ratios (OR) of 1.21 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.81 to 1.79; P=0.35) and 1.00 (95% CI 0.66 to 1.51; P>0.99), respectively. Mortality rates at 90 days were similar between the two groups (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.44 to 1.29; P=0.30). Abstract: Abstract Background Infections with (tricho-)strongyles, Dictyocaulus viviparus or Fasciola hepatica have been shown to reduce milk production in dairy cows. However, the current published studies focused on one single helminth infection by neglecting helminth co-infections and their possible (additive) effects on host performance. Hence, for the first time, we investigated differences in the impact of patent helminth co-infections versus mono-infections on milk production parameters in individual cows. Methods A total of 1583 dairy cows from 27 herds were included in this study. Faecal samples were examined in 2015 and 2021/2022 to determine the number of eggs/larvae per gram faeces for (tricho-)strongyles, D. viviparus, F. hepatica and rumen flukes. The cows were classified as non-infected, mono-infected and co-infected. Linear mixed models were applied to analyse the association between infection status (non-infected vs. mono-infected vs. co-infected) with milk yield, milk protein and milk fat content by including potential confounders. Results Infections with (tricho-)strongyles, D. viviparus, F. hepatica and rumen flukes were detected in 100%, 28.6%, 50.0% and 21.4% of herds, and 27.4%, 2.6%, 10.8% and 0.8% of faecal samples in 2015, while 100%, 0.0%, 86.7% and 60.0% of herds and 52.3%, 0.0%, 13.3% and 26.8% of faecal samples were positive in 2021/2022. Co-infections with two or more helminth taxa were detected in 74.4% of herds and 5.0% of faecal samples in 2015, and in 93.3% of herds and 21.7% of faecal samples in 2021/2022. The correlations between strongyle EPG, D. viviparus LPG and F. hepatica EPG were significantly positive in 2015. Significantly higher mean EPGs were identified in 2015 in faecal samples presenting co-infections with F. hepatica and one or two other helminth taxa than in faecal samples presenting F. hepatica mono-infections (P = 0.013). Although expected, the infection status (mono- or co-infected) had no significant impact on milk yield, milk protein and milk fat content in the linear mixed model analyses based on individual faecal examinations. Conclusions Patent helminth co-infections had no additive detrimental impact on milk production parameters in the present study. Abstract: Abstract A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decay B 0 → K *0(→ K + π − )μ + μ − is performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based on pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb −1 collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ , responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a 2.1σ deviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients C 10 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10} $$ , C 9 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9^{\prime } $$ and C 10 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10}^{\prime } $$ are all in better agreement than C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of 1.5σ. The model used also accounts for nonlocal contributions from B 0 → K *0[τ + τ − → μ + μ − ] rescattering, resulting in the first direct measurement of the bsττ vector effective-coupling C 9 τ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{9\tau } $$ .

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made impressive progress in recent years and represents a key technology that has a crucial impact on the economy and society. However, it is clear that AI and business models based on it can only reach their full potential if AI applications are developed according to high quality standards and are effectively protected against new AI risks. For instance, AI bears the risk of unfair treatment of individuals when processing personal data e.g., to support credit lending or staff recruitment decisions. The emergence of these new risks is closely linked to the fact that the behavior of AI applications, particularly those based on Machine Learning (ML), is essentially learned from large volumes of data and is not predetermined by fixed programmed rules. Thus, the issue of the trustworthiness of AI applications is crucial and is the subject of numerous major publications by stakeholders in politics, business and society. In addition, there is mutual agreement that the requirements for trustworthy AI, which are often described in an abstract way, must now be made clear and tangible. One challenge to overcome here relates to the fact that the specific quality criteria for an AI application depend heavily on the application context and possible measures to fulfill them in turn depend heavily on the AI technology used. Lastly, practical assessment procedures are needed to evaluate whether specific AI applications have been developed according to adequate quality standards. This AI assessment catalog addresses exactly this point and is intended for two target groups: Firstly, it provides developers with a guideline for systematically making their AI applications trustworthy. Secondly, it guides assessors and auditors on how to examine AI applications for trustworthiness in a structured way.

Abstract: Enhanced perioperative care protocols become the standard of care in elective surgery with a significant improvement in patients outcome. The key element of the enhanced perioperative care protocol is the multimodal and interdisciplinary approach targeted to the patient, focused on a holistic approach to reduce surgical stress and improve perioperative recovery. Enhanced perioperative care in emergency general surgery is still a debated topic with little evidence available. The present position paper illustrates the existing evidence about perioperative care in emergency surgery patients with a focus on each perioperative intervention in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phase. For each item was proposed and approved a statement by the WSES collaborative group.
