Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of work conditions on the acceptability and efficiency of respiratory protective devices (RPD). The subjective evaluation of comfort, protection, respiratory and visual constraint, and the acceptable duration of wear of six RPDs against dust was achieved by 30 workers during their actual work. Metabolic rate was evaluated for each worker, and dry and wet air temperatures measured in the work area. RPDs objective protection factor was measured during each of the 180 test periods. In the conditions of this study, the acceptable duration of wear was about 1 h. This duration and the comfort parameters were reduced when the air temperature increased. The younger workers and/or smokers were less sensitive to mask discomfort. Objective protection factors of the RPDs are reduced under warmer conditions, and when the metabolic rate is low. Finally, the results of this study also show the poor capacity of standardized leakage tests to assess the objective respiratory protection of workers in the field. Some hypotheses which can explain this fact are discussed. Keywords: respiratory protection, mask, comfort

Abstract

A model of cultured human intestinal epithelial monolayer disassembly by continued exposure to phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate is described. Protein kinase C (PKC) levels diminish as a result of continued exposure of phorbol ester in many cell types such as T84. T84 monolayers dissociate into two or three rounded cells under PKC down regulated conditions, and these morphological studies are not considered during proliferation. Disassembled monolayers are more permeable than the intact monolayers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: How can we incorporate humanist critiques of the Anthropocene while harnessing the notion's potential for challenging political imagination? Placing the Anthropocene offers one way forward; the notion of an African Anthropocene offers a productive paradox that holds planetary temporality and specific human lives in a single frame. Navigating the Anthropocene from Africa requires attending to scale both as an analytic and an actor category. In order to do so, this essay proposes the notion of interscalar vehicles: objects and modes of analysis that permit scholars and their subjects to move simultaneously through deep time and human time, through geological space and political space. This essay discusses the creation and destruction of value/waste and pasts/futures around a uranium mine in Mounana, Gabon, to unpack the political, ethical, epistemological, and affective dimensions of interscalar vehicles and their violent Anthropocenic implications.
