It has been reported that upon doping a Mott insulator, there can be a crossover to a pseudogaped metallic phase followed by a first-order transition to another thermodynamically stable metallic phase. We call this first-order metal-metal transition the Sordi transition. It was argued that the initial reports of Sordi transitions at finite temperature could be explained by finite size effects and biases related to the model and method used. In this work, we report the Sordi transition on larger clusters at finite temperature on a triangular lattice, where long-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are frustrated, using a different method, the dynamical cluster approximation instead of the cellular dynamical mean-field theory. This demonstrates that this first-order transition is a directly observable transition in doped Mott insulators and that it is relevant for experiments on candidate spin-liquid organic materials.

The Mott transition is observed experimentally in materials that are magnetically frustrated so that long-range order does not hide the Mott transition at finite temperature. The Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half-filling is a paradigmatic model to study the interplay of interactions and frustration on the normal-state phase diagram. We use the dynamical cluster approximation with continuous time auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo to solve this model for 1, 4, 6, 12, and 16 site clusters with detailed analysis performed for the 6 site cluster. We show that a) for every cluster there is an inflection point in the double occupancy as a function of interaction, defining a Widom line that extends above the critical point of the first-order Mott transition; b) the presence of this line and the cluster size dependence argue for the observability of the Mott transition at finite temperature in the thermodynamic limit; c) the loss of spectral weight in the metal to Mott insulator transition as a function of temperature and for strong interactions is momentum dependent, the hallmark of a pseudogap. While lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys are promising materials for temporary implants, questions remain on the impact of Zn and Ca. In this context, the precipitation in Mg-1.5Zn-0.25Ca (ZX20, in wt.%) was investigated upon linear heating from about room temperature to 400 C, with a particular focus on the debated ternary precipitate phase. Three exothermic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) peaks were observed at 125, 250 and 320 C. The microstructure at the end of these peaks (205, 260 and 350 C) was probed in a multiscale correlative approach using atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At 205 C, APT analysis revealed Ca-rich, Zn-rich and Zn-Ca-rich clusters of about 3 nm in size and with a number density of 5.7 x 10^23 m^-3. At 260 C, APT and TEM showed mono-layered Zn-Ca-rich Guinier-Preston (GP) zones of about 8 nm in size and with a number density of 1.3 x 10^23 m^-3. At 350 C, there are larger, highly coherent elongated precipitates of about 50 nm in size, in a lower number density, and of two types: either binary Mg2Ca precipitates or less numerous ternary Ca2Mg6Zn3 precipitates, as deduced from scanning TEM-based energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and nanodiffraction in TEM. The highest hardening, probed by Vickers testing, relates to the end of the 125 C DSC peak and thus to GP zones, which outperform the hardening induced by the nanoscale clusters and the larger intermetallic particles. Precipitation in ZX20 upon linear heating was compared to the one induced by hot extrusion at 330 C. Here, ternary precipitates outnumber the binary ones and are larger, incoherent, and in a much lower number density. They are unequivocally made of hexagonal Ca2Mg5Zn5, as deduced by atomically resolved EDS mapping and scanning TEM imaging, and supported by simulations. Precipitation complexity of in lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys and its kinetic path are discussed.

Competitive mechanisms contribute to image contrast from dislocations in annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy ADF STEM. A clear theoretical understanding of the mechanisms underlying the ADF STEM contrast is therefore essential for correct interpretation of dislocation images. This paper reports on a systematic study of the ADF STEM contrast from dislocations in a GaN specimen, both experimentally and computationally. Systematic experimental ADF STEM images of the edge character dislocations revealed a number of characteristic contrast features that are shown to depend on both the angular detection range and specific position of the dislocation in the sample. A theoretical model based on electron channelling and Bloch wave scattering theories, supported by multislice simulations using Grillo s strain channelling equation, is proposed to elucidate the physical origin of such complex contrast phenomena.

Superfluid stiffness $\rho_s$ is a defining characteristic of the superconducting state, allowing phase coherence and supercurrent. It is accessible experimentally through the penetration depth. Coexistence of $d$-wave superconductivity with other phases in underdoped cuprates, such as antiferromagnetism (AF) or charge-density waves (CDW), may drastically alter $\rho_s$. To shed light on this physics, the zero-temperature value of $\rho_s=\rho_{zz}$ along the $c$-axis was computed for different values of Hubbard interaction $U$ and different sets of tight-binding parameters describing the high-temperature superconductors YBCO and NCCO. We used Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field Theory for the one-band Hubbard model with exact diagonalization as impurity solver and state-of-the-art bath parametrization. We conclude that Mott physics plays a dominant role in determining the superfluid stiffness on the hole-doped side of the phase diagram. On the electron-doped side, antiferromagnetism wins over superconductivity near half-filling. But upon approaching optimal electron-doping, homogeneous coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism causes the superfluid stiffness to drop sharply. Hence, on the electron-doped side, it is competition between antiferromagnetism and $d$-wave superconductivity that plays a dominant role in determining the value of $\rho_{zz}$ near half-filling. At large overdoping, $\rho_{zz}$ behaves in a more BCS-like manner in both the electron- and hole-doped cases. We comment on some qualitative implications of these results for the superconducting transition temperature.

These proceedings address a recent publication by the ANITA collaboration of four upward- pointing cosmic-ray-like events observed in the first flight of ANITA. Three of these events were consistent with stratospheric cosmic-ray air showers where the axis of propagation does not inter- sect the surface of the Earth. The fourth event was consistent with a primary particle that emerges from the surface of the ice suggesting a possible {\tau}-lepton decay as the origin of this event. We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were previously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30~km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible $\tau$-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model ${\tau}$-neutrino cross section., Comment: 5pp,4 figures, referees' comments addressed, this version accepted to Phys. Imaging of flux vortices in high quality MgB$_2$ single crystals has been successfully performed in a commercial Field Emission Gun-based Transmission Electron Microscope. In Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy, the sample quality and the vortex lattice can be monitored simultaneously, allowing one to relate microscopically the surface quality and the vortex dynamics. Such a vortex motion ultimately determines the flow resistivity, $\rho_{f}$, the knowledge of which is indispensable for practical applications such as superconducting magnets or wires for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The observed patterns have been analyzed and compared with other studies by Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy or Bitter decoration. We find that the vortex lattice arrangement depends strongly on the surface quality obtained during the specimen preparation, and tends to form an hexagonal Abrikosov lattice at a relatively low magnetic field. Stripes or gossamer-like patterns, recently suggested as potential signatures of an unconventional behavior of MgB$_2$, were not observed.

A suspended system for measuring the thermal properties of membranes is presented. The sensitive thermal measurement is based on the 3$\omega$ dynamic method coupled to a V$\ddot{o}$lklein geometry. The device obtained using micro-machining processes allows the measurement of the in-plane thermal conductivity of a membrane with a sensitivity of less than 10nW/K (+/-$5x10^{-3}$Wm$^{-1}K^{-1}$ at room temperature) and a very high resolution ($\Delta K/K =10^{-3}$). A transducer (heater/thermometer) centered on the membrane is used to create an oscillation of the heat flux and to measure the temperature oscillation at the third harmonic using a Wheatstone bridge set-up. Power as low as 0.1nanoWatt has been measured at room temperature. The method has been applied to measure thermal properties of low stress silicon nitride and polycrystalline diamond membranes with thickness ranging from 100 nm to 400 nm. We report the observation of sixteen cosmic ray events of mean energy of 1.5 x 10^{19} eV, via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present the first ultra-wideband, far-field measurements of the radio spectral density of geosynchrotron emission in the range from 300-1000 MHz. The emission is 100% linearly polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen of our observed events are seen to have a phase-inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, new figure added

We report initial results of the first flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA-1) 2006-2007 Long Duration Balloon flight, which searched for evidence of a diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos above energies of 3 EeV. ANITA-1 flew for 35 days looking for radio impulses due to the Askaryan effect in neutrino-induced electromagnetic showers within the Antarctic ice sheets. We report here on our initial analysis, which was performed as a blind search of the data. No neutrino candidates are seen, with no detected physics background. We set model-independent limits based on this result. Upper limits derived from our analysis rule out the highest cosmogenic neutrino models. We investigate a possible new technique for microwave measurements of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) extensive air showers which relies on detection of expected continuum radiation in the microwave range, caused by free-electron collisions with neutrals in the tenuous plasma left after the passage of the shower. We performed an initial experiment at the AWA (Argonne Wakefield Accelerator) laboratory in 2003 and measured broadband microwave emission from air ionized via high energy electrons and photons. A follow-up experiment at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) in summer of 2004 confirmed the major features of the previous AWA observations with better precision and made additional measurements relevant to the calorimetric capabilities of the method. Prompted by these results we built a prototype detector using satellite television technology, and have made measurements indicating possible detection of cosmic ray extensive air showers. The method, if confirmed by experiments now in progress, could provide a high-duty cycle complement to current nitrogen fluorescence observations of UHECR, which are limited to dark, clear nights. Radiowave detection of the Cherenkov radiation produced by neutrino-ice collisions requires an understanding of the radiofrequency (RF) response of cold polar ice. We herein report on a series of radioglaciological measurements performed approximately 10 km north of Taylor Dome Station, Antarctica from Dec. 6, 2006 - Dec. 16, 2006. Using RF signals broadcast from: a) an englacial discone, submerged to a depth of 100 meters and broadcasting to a surface dual polarization horn receiver, and b) a dual-polarization horn antenna on the surface transmitting signals which reflect off the underlying bed and back up to the surface receiver, we have made time-domain estimates of both the real (index-of-refraction) and imaginary (attenuation length) components of the complex ice dielectric constant. We have also measured the uniformity of ice response along two orthogonal axes in the horizontal plane. We observe a wavespeed asymmetry of order 0.1%, projected onto the vertical propagation axis, consistent with some previous measurements, but somewhat lower than others., Comment: replacement of previous arXiv version with published version

We report on the first observations of the Askaryan effect in ice: coherent impulsive radio Cherenkov radiation from the charge asymmetry in an electromagnetic (EM) shower. Such radiation has been observed in silica sand and rock salt, but this is the first direct observation from an EM shower in ice. These measurements are important since the majority of experiments to date that rely on the effect for ultra-high energy neutrino detection are being performed using ice as the target medium. We report new limits on cosmic neutrino fluxes from the test flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, which completed an 18.4 day flight of a prototype long-duration balloon payload, called ANITA-lite, in early 2004. We search for impulsive events that could be associated with ultra-high energy neutrino interactions in the ice, and derive limits that constrain several models for ultra-high energy neutrino fluxes. The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment is being developed to search for ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrino interactions ($>3\times10^{18}$ eV) in the Antarctic ice cap. A neutrino interaction in the ice will produce a radio pulse by the means of the Askaryan effect. The large radio transparency of ice allows for such a pulse to be recorded by a cluster of balloon-borne antennas. The details of the ANITA instrument, now in a construction phase, and the science we hope to achieve is discussed. In order to prepare for the main mission, we have flown ANITA-lite during the 2003/04 austral season. ANITA-lite consisted of two quad-ridge horn antennas and a prototype RF (radio frequency) triggering and recording system. Here we present the results of an impulsive RF background survey of Antarctica, as well as proof-of-principle gain, tracking, and timing calibrations conducted by observing solar radio emissions and calibration radio-pulses. We describe a new experiment to search for neutrinos with energies above 3 x 10^18 eV based on the observation of short duration radio pulses that are emitted from neutrino-initiated cascades. The primary objective of the ANtarctic Impulse Transient Antenna (ANITA) mission is to measure the flux of Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) neutrinos and search for neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We present first results obtained from the successful launch of a 2-antenna prototype instrument (called ANITA-lite) that circled Antarctica for 18 days during the 03/04 Antarctic campaign and show preliminary results from attenuation length studies of electromagnetic waves at radio frequencies in Antarctic ice. We report results from 120 hours of livetime with the Goldstone Lunar Ultra-high energy neutrino Experiment (GLUE). The experiment searches for <10 ns microwave pulses from the lunar regolith, appearing in coincidence at two large radio telescopes separated by 22 km and linked by optical fiber. Such pulses would arise from subsurface electromagnetic cascades induced by interactions of >= 100 EeV neutrinos in the lunar regolith.
