Environmental pollution detection is a serious concern for both developed and developing countries. Though many existing methods are there to detect the environmental effluents and each of them have their own merits, but still they have some limitations such as requirement of highly sophisticated instruments which are quite expensive and time consuming etc. As a substitution for the current issue, optical sensing techniques made up of metal-organic frameworks have been introduced, which attract the researchers' eyes by their excellent performance and quick response and have been found to have an impressively diverse range of applications. Optical sensors of various luminescent materials are widely designed and deployed to detect environmental effluents like toxic heavy metal ions, organic molecules, dyes, bacteria, etc. This review highlights the current achievements made by the optical sensors derived by using various metal-organic frameworks to detect the different types of environmental pollutants, which will be beneficial for academics and industrialists.
