3. Geological investigations of the lunar surface using Clementine multispectral analyses

Abstract

Several regions of the lunar surface (highland and maria) are studied using the Clementine multispectral data. Two large farside impact craters, King (120° E 5.5° N) and Tsiolkovsky (128° E, 22° S), are examined in detail and compared to provide an indication of the lateral diversity of the lunar crust. The Clementine data show a varied composition between the two sites. King may have excavated a large cryptomare deposit within the upper crust, while Tsiolkovsky formed in more anorthositic highland crust. The north wall of King is further complicated by the presence of a feldspathic intrusion, cut by more localised mafic dykes. On a vertical scale, the highland crust shows a more uniform trend of increasing anorthosite with depth. These results highlight the lateral diversity of the upper crust on a local scale, and show a more uniform vertical trend in composition in this region. The observed lateral heterogeneity appears to be the result of the presence of cryptomaria and stalled intrusions in the upper crust. Techniques are developed and tested to allow for the mapping and characterisation of lunar basalts, and the calculation of thickness limits. These are applied to the Marius Hills, Flamsteed, Damoiseau and Cavalerius regions of southern Oceanus Procellarum, and have resulted in the detection of three previously unrecognised basalts, and the characterisation of three basalts that had not been spectrally classified previously. Basalt thickness ranges from tens to hundreds of metres in localised regions bordering the highlands. Further from the highlands, the basalts are consistently greater than several hundred metres thick. It has been found that the oldest flows are typically lower in TiO2 content (very low titanium to 4 wt%) than the more recent volcanic episodes (6 to 11 wt%). These results are applied to the regional stratigraphy of the Oceanus Procellarum Group.

20. Geology and stratigraphy of King crater, lunar farside

Abstract

Clementine and photographic data sets have been used to investigate the crustal stratigraphy and geology of King crater on the lunar farside (120[degrees]E, 5.5[degrees]N). Pre-existing topographic regimes or stress fields dominate many structures in the crater, which has excavated materials from depths of up to 14 km. The upper crust in the area is noritic anorthosite, grading to a more anorthositic signature with depth. A possible batholithic intrusion is also present in a 15-km-wide band, extending from the southern crater floor to at least 50 km north of King, and from near-surface levels down to at least the excavation depth of the crater. It is generally feldspathic, but is cut by mafic dykes now visible in the north wall. King also shows evidence for the presence of a cryptomare, exposed in regions of the peaks and in dark halo craters within the ejecta blanket. Localized olivine-bearing mineralogies are observed on the central peaks, suggesting isolated pockets of troctolitic mineralogies to have been present at 8- to 14-km depths. Copious volumes of crystalline melt produced from the impact event cover King's floor to a maximum thickness of 30-60 m, and have pooled in a number of natural depressions outside of the main crater. The main pool in the pre-existing Al-Tusi crater has a minimum depth of 150 m. Domes on the crater floor are verified as nonvolcanic in origin, and did not act as a source for any of the lava-like materials in King. Abstract

A goal of the International Planetary Data Alliance (lPDA) is to develop a set of archive data standards that enable the sharing of scientific data across international agencies and missions. To help achieve this goal, the IPDA steering committee initiated a six month proj ect to write requirements for and draft an information model based on the Planetary Data System (PDS) archive data standards. The project had a special emphasis on data formats. A set of use case scenarios were first developed from which a set of requirements were derived for the IPDA archive data standards. The special emphasis on data formats was addressed by identifying data formats that have been used by PDS nodes and other agencies in the creation of successful data sets for the Planetary Data System (PDS). The dependency of the IPDA information model on the PDS archive standards required the compilation of a formal specification of the archive standards currently in use by the PDS. An ontology modelling tool was chosen to capture the information model from various sources including the Planetary Science Data Dictionary [I] and the PDS Standards Reference [2]. Exports of the modelling information from the tool database were used to produce the information model document using an object-oriented notation for presenting the model. The tool exports can also be used for software development and are directly accessible by semantic web applications.

39. Volcanism on the Marius Hills plateau: observational analyses using Clementine multispectral data.

Abstract

We have studied the Marius Hills region and mapped the spectrally distinct flows present for the first time, using photographic and Clementine multispectral data. The basalts on the plateau are varied in age and composition but are dominated by a high-titanium Eratosthenian basalt, most likely from the same source as the Flamsteed Basalt, further south. The thickness of the basalts across the plateau is consistently greater than 120 m and is considerably thicker in some areas. A lower limit of 5320 km3 of basalts has been erupted onto the plateau. The domes and cones in the region do not appear to be related to any specific basalt or volcanic episode but occur at all levels in the stratigraphy that can be derived in the region. The eruption conditions required to form these constructs indicate that they must represent a series of separate volcanic episodes occurring throughout the history of the plateau. Cones on the Marius plateau are dominated by a strong glassy signature and often have an associated microlitic structure. Examples are shown of localized microlitic or glassy materials in regions where no cone is evident in the photographic data. These features are proposed to represent short-lived pyroclastic episodes that have deposited glassy and microlitic units on the plateau but have not been maintained for long enough to develop a cone. The volcanic history of the Marius Hills region is extremely complex, and most likely involved several separate episodes of volcanism with a large contrast in eruption styles and characteristics.

46. The Rosetta Science Archive: Status and Plans for Completing and Enhancing the Archive Content.

Abstract

On 30 September 2016, Rosetta completed its incredible mission by landing on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Although this marked an end to the spacecraft's operations, intensive work is ongoing with the instrument teams updating their science data in response to recent scientific reviews and delivering them to ESA's Planetary Science Archive (PSA). In addition, ESA is working with the instrument teams to produce new and enhanced data products and to improve documentation, aiming to provide the best long-term archive possible for the Rosetta mission. The majority of teams have now completed their nominal science data deliveries from the comet phase, and were able to deliver samples of new/improved data from their enhanced archiving activities for the recent review. The aim is to to complete any updates requested and deliver final products by the end of March in preparation for another scientific review in May. This final review will assess the complete Rosetta data holdings, and closely review the updated outputs from the enhanced archiving activities.With the resources from the operational mission now finished, ESA has established a number of activities with the Rosetta instrument teams to allow them to continue working on enhancing their archive content. The updates are focused on key aspects of an instrument's calibration or the production of higher level data / information, and are therefore specific to each instrument. Several of these activities have already been running in 2017/2018, and some extended activities are now being kicked off. The full 'archive enhancement' process will run until December 2019, when the post operations activities will end. As part of these activities, most instrument teams have provided a Science User Guide for their data, and many have updated their calibrations to deliver higher level and/or derived products. For example, the VIRTIS team will update both their spectral and geometrical calibrations, and aim to deliver mapping products to the final archive. Similarly, OSIRIS have started producing data with improved calibrations, and new geo-referenced derived data. They also now deliver data additionally in FITS and JPG formats. The Rosetta Plasma Consortium instruments will complete cross-calibrations and a number of activities individual to each instrument. The MIDAS team have produced a dust particle catalog from the comet coma. GIADA are producing dust environment maps with omni-directional products. COSIMA recently delivered laboratory data to help understand their inflight measurements. An activity is also ongoing to produce data set(s) containing supporting ground-based observations of the comet.In addition to these activities, the Rosetta ESA archiving team aim to produce calibrated data sets for the NAVCAM instrument, and will include the latest shape models from the comet in the final Rosetta archive. Work is also underway to incorporate the radiation monitor data (SREM) into the archive as well as to provide a centralized solution to the problem of geometry on the comet.This presentation will outline the current status of the Rosetta archive, and highlight some of the 'enhanced archiving' activities underway. Abstract

The article discusses how to arrive at bids in oil and gas asset acquisition and the discount rates applied to winning bids. It is stated that factors affecting bid computations include cost of capital, commodity price hedging and lower confidence reserves. It is recommended that effective tax rates be used instead of marginal rates to account for corporate losses particularly in upstream energy sector. The article indicated that producing properties can be used to collateralize bank debt.
