Objective: Hearing loss in the older adult population is a significant global health issue. Hearing aids can provide an effective means to address hearing loss and improve quality of life. Despite this, the uptake and continued use of hearing aids is low, with non-use of hearing aids representing a significant problem for effective audiological rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to investigate the reasons for the non-use of hearing aids. Design and study sample: A cross-sectional survey was used to investigate the reasons given for the non-use of hearing aids by people with hearing loss (n = 332) and family members (n = 313) of people with hearing loss in Australia, the UK, and USA. Results: Survey results showed that hearing aid non-users generally cited external factors as reasons for non-use, whereas family members reported non-use due to attitudinal barriers. Past users of hearing aids and family members of past users both identified devices factors as barriers to use. Conclusions: Differences in reasons for non-use may provide further insight for researchers and clinicians and help inform future clinical practice in addressing the low uptake and use of hearing aids by people with hearing loss and the role of family members in audiological rehabilitation. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify knowledge gaps in relation to access to, and outcomes from, hearing care services for adults in Malaysia. Design: Scoping review. Study sample: 1261 studies from 4 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and Scopus) and 7 studies from grey literature were identified. After removing duplicates, 647 studies were screened for title and/or abstract, and five studies met the criteria and were included. Results: Audiologists reported offering a range of diagnostic assessment and rehabilitation services, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices, auditory training, and counselling. However, the uptake of hearing services was low; rates of hearing aid use among people with at least mild hearing loss were around 2.7%-4.4%; 6.5%-7.3% for those with at least moderate loss. There were no data on the outcomes from hearing services. Conclusions: This scoping review highlighted the limited uptake of hearing services among adults in Malaysia, despite the existence of services. Furthermore, it revealed a lack of information about the factors contributing to this limited uptake. To address the burden of hearing loss, there is an urgent need to identify barriers to access, improve access and uptake, and evaluate the benefits of adult hearing services in Malaysia. Objective: With our aging population, an increasing number of older adults with hearing loss have cognitive decline. Hearing care practitioners have an important role in supporting healthy aging and should be knowledgeable about cognitive decline and associated management strategies to maximize successful hearing intervention. Methods: A review of current research and expert opinion. Results: This article outlines the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline/dementia, hypothesized mechanisms underlying this, and considers current research into the effects of hearing intervention on cognitive decline. Cognition into old age, cognitive impairment, dementia, and how to recognize cognitive decline that is not part of normal aging are described. Screening of older asymptomatic adults for cognitive decline and practical suggestions for the delivery of person-centered hearing care are discussed. Holistic management goals, personhood, and person-centered care in hearing care management are considered for older adults with normal cognitive aging through to dementia. A case study illustrates important skills and potential management methods. Prevention strategies for managing hearing and cognitive health and function through to older age, and strategies to maximize successful hearing aid use are provided. Conclusion: This article provides evidence-based recommendations for hearing care professionals supporting older clients to maximize well-being through the cognitive trajectory. Objective: To evaluate the Québec Audiological Assessment Protocol for Younger and Older Adults (QAAP-YOA) and its accompanying clinical tool efficacy to assess the needs of individuals with hearing loss in a simulated context. This study is the Phase 2 in the development of the QAAP-YOA. Design: Participants completed two needs assessments with simulated clients and wrote audiological reports, while applying the QAAP-YOA with and without the use of its clinical tool. Interviews were filmed, and reports collected. Both were scored by two independent evaluators. A qualitative analysis of reports was also conducted. Study sample: Eleven audiology students and four early-career audiologists (n = 15). Results: The clinical tool did not influence the interview process since both experimental conditions had similar compliance rates to the protocol (p = 0.114). Compliance rates for assessment reports were higher with the clinical tool (p < 0.001). Participants' conclusions after applying the QAAP-YOA were consistent across participants. The information provided in the reports was more comprehensive and coherent with the client's needs when participants used the clinical tool. Conclusions: The QAAP-YOA can lead to a greater standardisation of needs assessments and to more comprehensive reports, which may lead to intervention programs more closely aligned with clients' needs. The present study aimed to explore the effect of the PERMA (Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning, and Accomplishment) flourishing intervention on basic psychological needs satisfaction in hard-of-hearing adolescents. This research was a quasi-randomised controlled trial design. Twenty-eight hard-of-hearing adolescents aged 14–17 years were randomly selected from the Deaf Center and Baghcheban Deaf School in Kashan, Iran. They were randomly replaced to experimental (n = 13) or control (n = 15) groups. The experimental group participated in the 10-session intervention, while the control group did not participate in this programme. Both groups completed the Basic Needs Satisfaction in General Scale (BNSG-S before and after intervention. The results showed that after intervention, scores on the subscales of basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy, and relatedness) in hard-of-hearing adolescents significantly and positively increased (p < 0.001). Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) patients often encounter difficulties in effective communication with healthcare professionals and are less likely to receive quality medical care. However, DHH populations are understudied in health communication research. This study examined how offline healthcare obstacles and online health consultation impact DHH patients' health, and the mediating roles of patient-centered care (PCC) and patient activation. Data from 323 DHH patients were analyzed using structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized mediation pathway model. Results indicate that offline healthcare obstacles negatively affect DHH patients' perception of patient-centeredness, which reduces their ability and confidence in self-care (conceptualized as patient activation in this study). This reduced patient activation may jeopardize DHH patients' physical and psychological health. Meanwhile, online health consultation is positively associated with PCC, and higher levels of PCC can increase patient activation, contributing to better physical and psychological health. Testing the same model with hearing-abled participants (n = 3542) revealed significant differences in these intervening relationships. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between DHH patients' healthcare experience and their health outcomes. Introduction: Congenital deafness is a pathological entity that represents an economical and social burden, affecting up to 0.2% of newborns in Europe. Sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) is caused by a variety of factors, including congenital abnormalities, perinatal infectious diseases and genetic syndromes. The inner ear's vestibular system, nestled alongside the auditory organs, is crucial for balance maintenance. Its close connection with the auditory system means that disturbances in one often coincide with disturbances in the other, highlighting their intertwined functions. With this review we aim to describe objective vestibular tests found in literature and to study their use for diagnosis of vestibular disturbances in patients affected by congenital deafness. Methods: The review is conducted with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. The search string used was: [(congenital deafness) OR (congenital hearing loss) OR (congenital hypoacusia)] AND [(vestibular disorders) OR (vertigo)]. An initial abstract reading selection was made, and a subsequent comprehensive full-text reading. For each article, we identified the type of vestibular test utilized and its corresponding outcome. Results: Out of the initial--papers identified through the search string--articles met the eligibility criteria for further analysis through abstract and full-text reading. After further selection--articles were chosen for detailed examination, focusing on the data of patients. Conclusion: Congenital hearing loss profoundly affects a child's development, especially in language and communication skills, and it is frequently associated with a pathological vestibular system. Early identification allows timely intervention with personalized therapies. In current literature, there is still no gold standard test to identify balance disorders in patients with congenital hearing loss. There is considerable variability on the subject due to the inclusion of diverse patients with various diagnoses, alongside a wide range of available technologies. Managing such conditions necessitates collaboration among healthcare providers, ensuring comprehensive care through prompt diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. Collaboration between teachers of students who are deaf and hard of hearing (TSDHH) and educational audiologists is essential when developing successful, comprehensive service delivery plans for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Despite the importance, little is known about how these two professions work together. This study sought to describe the current state of collaboration between educational audiologists and TSDHH and to explore the barriers and facilitators to this collaboration. Anonymous survey responses from 752 educational audiologists and TSDHH showed that collaboration is considered valuable and is occurring frequently, via a variety of formats and despite significant barriers. More research is needed to understand how efforts to minimize barriers to collaboration might improve the quality of collaboration and ultimately impact the success of student support. Background: Individuals with disabilities are more likely to use substances and have cardiovascular disease (CVD) than individuals without disabilities. CVD is associated with drug use, which increases the risk for poor CVD outcomes. Our aim was to test the association between CVD and lifetime drug use (LDU) among those with vision loss (VL) and/or hearing loss (HL) and assess if disability type moderated this association. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression incorporating complex survey design was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) using data from NHANES 2013–2018. Results: Although not quite statistically significant (p ≥.05), the magnitude of effect modification was large. The effect was positive among those with VL (AOR = 1.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.73, 3.30) or HL (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 0.56, 5.11), but among those with both CVD was associated with 75% lower odds of LDU (AOR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.06, 1.05). After adjusting for multiple comparisons, the CVD effect was significantly different between those with VL versus both VL and HL (p <.05), and nearly significantly different between those with HL versus both (p ≥.05). AbstractHearing loss can impact an individual’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. This review identifies existing research on client-centered interventions for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) clients which occupational therapy practitioners should understand. Databases searched included CINAHL, JSTOR, ERIC, PsychINFO, and Google Scholar. Full-text articles published in English from December 2013 to December 2023 were reviewed. After data extraction and analysis, 77 articles were synthesized, and interventions were categorized by type, occupation, relevant age group, theme, and professional performing the intervention. In speech audiometry, the speech-recognition threshold (SRT) is usually established by adjusting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) until 50% of the words or sentences are repeated correctly. However, these conditions are rarely encountered in everyday situations. Therefore, for a group of 15 young participants with normal hearing and a group of 12 older participants with hearing impairment, speech-recognition scores were determined at SRT and at four higher SNRs using several stationary and fluctuating maskers. Participants' verbal responses were recorded, and participants were asked to self-report their listening effort on a categorical scale (self-reported listening effort, SR-LE). The responses were analyzed using an Automatic Speech Recognizer (ASR) and compared to the results of a human examiner. An intraclass correlation coefficient of r =.993 for the agreement between their corresponding speech-recognition scores was observed. As expected, speech-recognition scores increased with increasing SNR and decreased with increasing SR-LE. However, differences between speech-recognition scores for fluctuating and stationary maskers were observed as a function of SNR, but not as a function of SR-LE. The verbal response time (VRT) and the response speech rate (RSR) of the listeners' responses were measured using an ASR. The participants with hearing impairment showed significantly lower RSRs and higher VRTs compared to the participants with normal hearing. These differences may be attributed to differences in age, hearing, or both. With increasing SR-LE, VRT increased and RSR decreased. The results show the possibility of deriving a behavioral measure, VRT, measured directly from participants' verbal responses during speech audiometry, as a proxy for SR-LE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By 2050, 1 in 4 people worldwide will be living with hearing impairment. We propose a digital Speech Hearing Screener (dSHS) using short nonsense word recognition to measure speech-hearing ability. The importance of hearing screening is increasing due to the anticipated increase in individuals with hearing impairment globally. We compare dSHS outcomes with standardized pure-tone averages (PTA) and speech-recognition thresholds (SRT). Fifty participants (aged 55 or older underwent pure-tone and speech-recognition thresholding. One-way ANOVA was used to compare differences between hearing impaired and hearing not-impaired groups, by the dSHS, with a clinical threshold of moderately impaired hearing at 35 dB and severe hearing impairment at 50 dB. dSHS results significantly correlated with PTAs/SRTs. ANOVA results revealed the dSHS was significantly different (F(1,47) = 38.1, p < 0.001) between hearing impaired and unimpaired groups. Classification analysis using a 35 dB threshold, yielded accuracy of 85.7% for PTA-based impairment and 81.6% for SRT-based impairment. At a 50 dB threshold, dSHS classification accuracy was 79.6% for PTA-based impairment (Negative Predictive Value (NPV)-93%) and 83.7% (NPV-100%) for SRT-based impairment. The dSHS successfully differentiates between hearing-impaired and unimpaired individuals in under 3 min. This hearing screener offers a time-saving, in-clinic hearing screening to streamline the triage of those with likely hearing impairment to the appropriate follow-up assessment, thereby improving the quality of services. Introduction: Auditory training (AT) exercises as the main part of auditory rehabilitation have emerged as a promising method for enhancing auditory perception and communication skills in individuals with hearing impairments or difficulties in auditory processing. Through AT, the central auditory nervous system (CANS) undergoes changes that optimize neural circuits, resulting in improved auditory perception. Auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs), including the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and cortical auditory-evoked potentials (CAEPs), offer objective measurements of neural responses and serve as valuable biomarkers to assess the effectiveness of AT. Methods: For this systematic review, we conducted a comprehensive search in multiple databases, including MEDLINE (via PubMed), Science Direct, Web of Science, and SciELO, up until August 18, 2023. There were no study type restrictions or limitations on publication time. Following a careful assessment of the article quality and their alignment with the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 25 articles were selected for inclusion in this study. Results: Based on the findings of the reviewed studies, it has been reported that AT exercises lead to an increase in the amplitude of waves in both brainstem and cortical AEPs, with the exception of P1 and N2 waves. Furthermore, it has been observed that the latency of these responses decreases following AT. Conclusion: The application of brainstem and cortical AEPs as objective electrophysiological tools holds promise in assessing the effectiveness of AT exercises and confirming the selected approach for AT. Closed captions are a vital tool of sonic access for D/deaf and hard of hearing audio-viewers, detailing dialogue alongside notable sound effects and music. As evidenced by the recent virality of the captions in the Netflix series Stranger Things, captions are increasingly playing a key role in the sonic experience for many audio-viewers. From captions such as [tentacles undulating moistly] to [wet footsteps squelch], captions shape and articulate sounds, working both alone and alongside other sonic elements. Yet, while captions crucially anchor sonic meaning for a growing audience, captions are still a critically understudied dimension of film and media sound. Drawing upon the visceral captions and squelching sound effects of the fourth season of Stranger Things, this article details the parallels between closed captions and the custom synchronized sound effects of Foley. Captions crucially emphasize the narrative and characterizing effects of Foley sounds, from an oozing moist [squelch] that turns the stomach to the vivid snap of [bones cracking]. In turn, Foley sound offers a vital new framework from which to understand the sonicity of captions. As an artistic practice of reconfiguration and substitutions, Michel Chion's seminal distinction between real and rendered sounds underpins theorizations of Foley, where a broken celery vividly renders the emotive impact of bones breaking. This article contends that captions can similarly be understood as rendering sound, a move that ultimately folds captions such as [wet writhing], [creatures chittering] and [flesh tearing] into larger sound theories, highlighting the sonic significance and generative possibilities of access tools. The focus of this article is on the development of adequate English reading skills. To delineate necessary components for a phonemic-based language, it is necessary to compare two broad frameworks--the Qualitative Similarity Hypothesis (QSH) and the American Sign Language (ASL)--English sign-print bilingual model. Both frameworks have been invoked to address the language and literacy challenges of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children and adolescents. Descriptions of the QSH and ASL are provided, and a synthesis of salient research findings is presented. The selection of relevant sources for both frameworks is the result of both a systematic and a professional review, focusing on early and recent investigations. There are benefits associated with the use of American Sign Language in a sign-print ASL-English bilingual education program, especially when combined with fingerspelling and English orthography. However, these benefits seem to diminish during the later early literacy period, particularly in the alphabetic stage. Thus, it is argued that, at present, the QSH and other extant developmental models proffer not only stronger evidence, but also a better explanation for the difficulties of d/Dhh students in developing early and advanced English reading skills. Objective: This systematic review examined the audiological and non-audiological factors that influence hearing aid use, benefit and satisfaction in adults based on studies published during the last decade (2010 and 2023). Design: Studies were identified by using PRISMA guidelines for systematic searches on five platforms (Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, EBSCOhost including CINAHL and Academic Search Complete). The National Institute of Health Quality assessment tool and the Oxford Centre for Evidence Based Medicine tool were used for quality assessment and grading of level of evidence. Results: Forty-six articles were included in the review. A total of 101 significant factors influencing hearing aid use (n = 47), benefit (n = 17) and satisfaction (n = 37) were identified. Clear determinants of hearing aid use, benefit and satisfaction included hearing sensitivity, self-reported hearing difficulty, speech perception, attitude and beliefs. 34 cross-sectional studies in this review were graded level 4, 9 cohort studies rated level 3, and 3 randomised control trials rated level 2. Conclusion: Factors associated with hearing aid outcomes identified in the past decade support previous evidence. New factors like social networks and service-delivery models, have also been identified. Congenital hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disabilities worldwide. The genetic causes of hearing loss account for 50% of hearing loss. Genetic causes of hearing loss can be classified as nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) or syndromic hearing loss (SHL). NSHL is defined as a partial or complete hearing loss without additional phenotypes; however, SHL, known as hearing loss, is associated with other phenotypes. Both types follow a simple Mendelian inheritance fashion. Several studies have been conducted to uncover the genetic factors contributing to NSHL and SHL in Saudi patients. However, these studies have encountered certain limitations. This review assesses and discusses the genetic factors underpinning NSHL and SHL globally, with a specific emphasis on the Saudi Arabian context. It also explores the prevalence of the most observed genetic causes of NSHL and SHL in Saudi Arabia. It also sheds light on areas where further research is needed to fully understand the genetic foundations of hearing loss in the Saudi population. The aim of the current study was to examine facial and body posture emotion recognition among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and hearing young adults. Participants were (N = 126) DHH (n = 48) and hearing (n = 78) college students who completed two emotion recognition tasks in which they were shown photographs of faces and body postures displaying different emotions of both high and low intensities and had to infer the emotion being displayed. Compared to hearing participants, DHH participants performed worse on the body postures emotion task for both high and low intensities. They also performed more poorly on the facial emotion task, but only for low-intensity emotional facial expressions. On both tasks, DHH participants whose primary mode of communication was Signed English performed significantly more poorly than those whose primary mode was American Sign Language (ASL) or spoken English. Moreover, DHH participants who communicated using ASL performed similarly to hearing participants. This suggests that difficulties in affect recognition among DHH individuals occur when processing both facial and body postures that are more subtle and reflective of real-life displays of emotion. Importantly, this also suggests that ASL as a primary form of communication in this population may serve as a protective factor against emotion recognition difficulties, which could, in part, be due to the complex nature of this language and its requirement to perceive meaning through facial and postural expressions with a wide visual lens. Background and Aims: Designing and implementing telerehabilitation systems would require the identification of data elements to meet disabled people's needs. An in‐depth study on the identification and validation of data elements can help design and implement telerehabilitation systems successfully. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and validate data elements to design a telerehabilitation system for the speech and language disorders of hearing‐impaired children in Iran. Methods: This descriptive cross‐sectional study was conducted in three steps including literature review, focused group discussion, and Delphi technique implementation to extract and validate data elements. In the first step, the literature on electronic databases was reviewed to extract the data elements of telerehabilitation systems, and nine studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria. In the second step, a focused group discussion was held to review and classify the extracted data elements. Finally, the Delphi technique was employed to validate the drafted data elements. Results: In total, 352 data elements were extracted from the literature review. Finally, 102 data elements in 10 categories (Demographic and Clinical information of the disabled person, Clinical history, Demographic information of the provider, Customization of exercises, Reminders, Online and offline counseling, and training, Reporting, Key features of the system, Evaluation of the progress of the disabled person) were classified and validated by experts as essential data elements to design a telerehabilitation system for the speech and language disorders of hearing‐impaired children. Conclusions: The necessary data elements were proposed as the foundations to design a telerehabilitation system for the speech and language disorders of hearing‐impaired children. The goal of this study was to test the effect of retrieval practice on word learning in children who are hard of hearing (HH).Twenty-six TH children and 16 children who are HH completed a speech perception and a vocabulary test, and a rapid word-learning game to learn new words under no retrieval, immediate retrieval, and spaced retrieval conditions.Linear mixed-effect models revealed that learning condition and time predicted 48% of the variance in word recognition, and age predicted 15% of word recall variance. We observed no differences in word recognition and recall between TH children and children who are HH. Children learned and remembered more words in the immediate and spaced retrieval practice conditions than in the no retrieval condition.Retrieval practice is more effective for word learning and retention than passive exposure (no retrieval). Clinical and educational practices for children who are DHH could combine explicit instruction using targeted exposures and retrieval of new words with naturalistic approaches. Auditory training can lead to notable enhancements in specific tasks, but whether these improvements generalize to untrained tasks like speech-in-noise (SIN) recognition remains uncertain. This study examined how training conditions affect generalization. Fifty-five young adults were divided into "Trained-in-Quiet" (n = 15), "Trained-in-Noise" (n = 20), and "Control" (n = 20) groups. Participants completed two sessions. The first session involved an assessment of SIN recognition and voice discrimination (VD) with word or sentence stimuli, employing combined fundamental frequency (F0) + formant frequencies voice cues. Subsequently, only the trained groups proceeded to an interleaved training phase, encompassing six VD blocks with sentence stimuli, utilizing either F0-only or formant-only cues. The second session replicated the interleaved training for the trained groups, followed by a second assessment conducted by all three groups, identical to the first session. Results showed significant improvements in the trained task regardless of training conditions. However, VD training with a single cue did not enhance VD with both cues beyond control group improvements, suggesting limited generalization. Notably, the Trained-in-Noise group exhibited the most significant SIN recognition improvements posttraining, implying generalization across tasks that share similar acoustic conditions. Overall, findings suggest training conditions impact generalization by influencing processing levels associated with the trained task. Training in noisy conditions may prompt higher auditory and/or cognitive processing than training in quiet, potentially extending skills to tasks involving challenging listening conditions, such as SIN recognition. There is broad consensus that listening effort is an important outcome for measuring hearing performance. However, there remains debate on the best ways to measure listening effort. This study sought to measure neural correlates of listening effort using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in experienced adult hearing aid users. The study evaluated impacts of amplification and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on cerebral blood oxygenation, with the expectation that easier listening conditions would be associated with less oxygenation in the prefrontal cortex. Thirty experienced adult hearing aid users repeated sentence-final words from low-context Revised Speech Perception in Noise Test sentences. Participants repeated words at a hard SNR (individual SNR-50) or easy SNR (individual SNR-50 + 10 dB), while wearing hearing aids fit to prescriptive targets or without wearing hearing aids. In addition to assessing listening accuracy and subjective listening effort, prefrontal blood oxygenation was measured using fNIRS. As expected, easier listening conditions (i.e., easy SNR, with hearing aids) led to better listening accuracy, lower subjective listening effort, and lower oxygenation across the entire prefrontal cortex compared to harder listening conditions. Music is an important part of life for many people. It can evoke a wide range of emotions, including sadness, happiness, anger, tension, relief and excitement. People with hearing loss and people with cochlear implants have reduced abilities to discriminate some of the features of musical sounds that may be involved in evoking emotions. This paper reviews these changes in perceptual abilities and describes how they affect the perception of emotion in music. For people with acquired partial hearing loss, it appears that the perception of emotion in music is almost normal, whereas congenital partial hearing loss is associated with impaired perception of music emotion. For people with cochlear implants, the ability to discriminate changes in fundamental frequency (associated with perceived pitch) is much worse than normal and musical harmony is hardly perceived. As a result, people with cochlear implants appear to judge emotion in music primarily using tempo and rhythm cues, and this limits the range of emotions that can be judged. Introduction: Aural rehabilitation focused on music for individuals with cochlear implants (CIs) and/or hearing aids (HAs) typically emphasizes perceptual skills rather than enjoyment of music. Yet, those with CIs and/or HAs often struggle to enjoy music, complaining that it sounds distorted with the implant or HAs. Typically, aural rehabilitation programs require a significant time commitment, but this may not be feasible or preferable for many patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two individualized intensive 3-week home practice programs focused on enjoyment of music, a personal goal for this subject. Methods: The subject was a professional musician who used a CI and HA. Cognitive measures of global cognitive function, executive function, processing speed, auditory working memory, visual-spatial abilities, verbal fluency, and auditory-verbal memory, as well as auditory electrophysiology (EEG) measures were conducted pre-post experiment 2. Two experiments were undertaken to evaluate responses to two practice programs that incorporated different variations in listening dosage and intervention activities. Results: Experiment 1 resulted in minimal measurable improvements related to music likability ratings, with the highest dosage condition showing a small increase in average likability rating from baseline to week 3. The results of experiment 2 revealed an improvement in likability ratings only when dosage steadily increased each week. The subject also reported improved mood and decreased frustration during weeks two and three of experiment 2. Finally, we found improvement pre-post experiment 2 on several cognitive and EEG measures. Discussion: The results of these experiments are encouraging and support the use of an individualized, person-centered, and semi-structured home practice program to increase music enjoyment and improve quality of life and auditory processing for individuals with hearing loss. During the last decade, there has been a move towards consumer-centric hearing healthcare. This is a direct result of technological advancements (e.g., merger of consumer grade hearing aids with consumer grade earphones creating a wide range of hearing devices) as well as policy changes (e.g., the U.S. Food and Drug Administration creating a new over-the-counter [OTC] hearing aid category). In addition to various direct-to-consumer (DTC) hearing devices available on the market, there are also several validated tools for the self-assessment of auditory function and the detection of ear disease, as well as tools for education about hearing loss, hearing devices, and communication strategies. Further, all can be made easily available to a wide range of people. This perspective provides a framework and identifies tools to improve and maintain optimal auditory wellness across the adult life course. A broadly available and accessible set of tools that can be made available on a digital platform to aid adults in the assessment and as needed, the improvement, of auditory wellness is discussed. Purpose: Unaddressed hearing loss can adversely affect employment and day-to-day work-life. Efficient and effective audiology support can help optimise hearing in the workplace. This study explores the audiological rehabilitation experiences of workers with hearing loss (WHL). Materials and methods: Twenty-four WHL with experience of a wide range of audiology services across the UK participated in semi-structured interviews. Interviews were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Three main themes were generated: Theme 1: mixed experiences with audiology services (subdivided into two subthemes and four sub-subthemes). Theme 2: audiology role in work support (subdivided into three subthemes). Theme 3: "I think support could be improved if..." (subdivided into two subthemes). Conclusion: The audiological rehabilitation for working-age adults with hearing loss needs improvements to deliver sufficient support and quality care. Some of the barriers to having better-functioning hearing healthcare require fundamental standards in healthcare quality, such as access to services, staff (including audiologists) deaf awareness, information and technology support, and personalised care that considers work-life needs. Further research is required to evaluate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of improvements, such as support that extends beyond hearing aid care, whether from audiology or non-audiology services. IMPLICATION FOR REHABILITATION: Workers with hearing loss need audiologists' support to address their work life needs beyond hearing-aids care. Improving audiologists' competencies, audiology departments' efficiency and developing relevant resources may promote better healthcare for workers with hearing loss. Profoundly hearing-impaired individuals lack health-promotion education on healthy lifestyles, and this may be due to communication barriers and limited awareness of available resources. Therefore, providing understandable healthy eating knowledge and a proper education evaluation via a questionnaire is vital. The present study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the content of a Saudi sign language version of the General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ). The study followed the World Health Organization guidelines for the translation and cultural adaptation of the GNKQ, using two-phase translation (from English into Arabic and then from Arabic into Saudi sign language), including forward-translation, back-translation, and pilot testing among profoundly hearing-impaired individuals. A total of 48 videos were recorded to present the GNKQ in Saudi sign language. The scale-level content validity index (S-CVI) value was equal to 0.96, and the item-level content validity index (I-CVI) value for all questions was between 1 and 0.9, except for question 6 in section 1, which was 0.6; this discrepancy was due to religious, social, and cultural traditions. The translation, cultural adaptation, and content validity of the Saudi sign language version of the GNKQ were satisfactory. Aims Tailored self-management support of hypertension, considering language and communication, is important for minorities, specifically in the deaf community. However, little is known about the experiences of hypertension self-management in deaf individuals who use sign language. This study aimed to explore the factors and processes of self-management in deaf sign language users with hypertension. Methods and results Ten men and women who used sign language participated in this study. Data were collected using in-depth personal interviews conducted in the presence of a sign language interpreter between November 2022 and February 2023. All interviews were recorded and transcribed for conventional content analysis. Qualitative analyses identified four categories related to the self-management of hypertension among participants: personal factors (chronic hand pain, unique language and communication, and efforts to turn crisis into opportunities), family and socioeconomic factors (family support and financial burden of living), challenges (limited health literacy and alienation from health education), and desire for health education considering the deaf community. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that family support, socioeconomic status, hand pain, and health literacy should be considered for the planning and development of health education on self-management of hypertension in deaf individuals. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions (e.g., face mask wearing and social distancing) on individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH). The study aimed to describe perceptions of challenges and valued resources to inform efforts to mitigate negative consequences of the pandemic. A survey was used to solicit information about the pandemic-related experiences of 108 individuals who are D/HH and/or parents or service providers of children who are D/HH. Questions elicited perceptions of pandemic related challenges, resources, and supports. Results demonstrated high percentages of respondents reported experiencing substantial impacts of face mask wearing on communication. Additionally, respondents reported negative consequences of social distancing on the way they connected with others. Research has shown that external relative to internal focus (IF) instructions may improve motor performance as well as cognitive function (e.g., attentional stability and task‐focus). The aim of the study was to examine the influence of attentional focus instructions on skill acquisition and learning of an aiming task in individuals with hearing impairments. The participants (N = 39, Mage = 17.87 ± 1.88 years) performed a bowling task with their dominant hand to knock down as many pins as possible. On day 1, they were randomly divided into three attentional focus groups; IF (focus on your throwing hand), external focus (EF) (focus on the pins), and control (no‐focus) instructions. Each participant performed 36 trials, divided into 3 blocks of 12 trials. Attentional focus instructions were given before each block, with a brief reminder provided after each 3 trials. On day 2, retention and transfer (further distance) tests were performed. Results showed that while there were no significant differences between groups in the pre‐test, the EF group outperformed both IF and control groups in retention and transfer tests. No significant difference was found between the control and IF. The findings suggest that the advantages of the external relative to the IF and no‐focus instructions may generalize to individuals with hearing impairments. The current study aims at exploring the strategies used by instructors to deal with e-learning of individuals with hearing impairment and identifying barriers encountered by instructors of individuals with hearing impairment through a telephonic interview. A set of validated probes was created, and a semi structured interview was conducted with 12 instructors who teach individuals with hearing impairment. The obtained data was subjected to inductive content analysis. Two major themes emerged from the data; challenges encountered by instructors and strategies adopted by instructors. Several subthemes and codes were grouped under each theme. Overall, the study indicated the need for extensive research concerning e-learning for individuals with hearing impairment. The social capital experiences of 10 Australian adolescents aged between 13-16 years, who identified as d/Deaf, were explored in semi-structured interviews. Additionally, one parent of each adolescent was interviewed about the adolescents' experiences as a way of augmenting the adolescents' responses. This study used a social capital framework to explore various aspects of the adolescents' lives and ascertained factors that facilitated or diminished the social capital reserves of the young participants through an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Four themes were identified: Social Capital Reserves; Social Capital Boosters; Social Capital Barriers; and Identity. Particular attention is drawn to how these adolescents perceived themselves and the role of the school in developing, or diminishing, social capital Ten d/Deaf Australian adolescents interviewed in this study generally felt supported and understood by family and close friends. The adolescents' social capital was influenced by how they engaged with their d/Deaf identity. Some adolescents reported diminished participation in networks outside the home that may indicate they do not feel included in all school and extra-curricular activities. Some parents reported that their children had experienced bullying and discrimination at school. Adolescents had mixed feelings about their d/Deaf identity, with some attempting to normalize their experiences. Participation in complex listening situations such as group conversations in noisy environments sets high demands on the auditory system and on cognitive processing. Reports of hearing-impaired people indicate that strenuous listening situations occurring throughout the day lead to feelings of fatigue at the end of the day. The aim of the present study was to develop a suitable test sequence to evoke and measure listening effort (LE) and listening-related fatigue (LRF), and, to evaluate the influence of hearing aid use on both dimensions in mild to moderately hearing-impaired participants. The chosen approach aims to reconstruct a representative acoustic day (Time Compressed Acoustic Day [TCAD]) by means of an eight-part hearing-test sequence with a total duration of approximately 2½ h. For this purpose, the hearing test sequence combined four different listening tasks with five different acoustic scenarios and was presented to the 20 test subjects using virtual acoustics in an open field measurement in aided and unaided conditions. Besides subjective ratings of LE and LRF, behavioral measures (response accuracy, reaction times), and an attention test (d2-R) were performed prior to and after the TCAD. Furthermore, stress hormones were evaluated by taking salivary samples. Subjective ratings of LRF increased throughout the test sequence. This effect was observed to be higher when testing unaided. In three of the eight listening tests, the aided condition led to significantly faster reaction times/response accuracies than in the unaided condition. In the d2-R test, an interaction in processing speed between time (pre- vs. post-TCAD) and provision (unaided vs. aided) was found suggesting an influence of hearing aid provision on LRF. A comparison of the averaged subjective ratings at the beginning and end of the TCAD shows a significant increase in LRF for both conditions. At the end of the TCAD, subjective fatigue was significantly lower when wearing hearing aids. The analysis of stress hormones did not reveal significant effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Education for people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) is full of challenges, especially in a context that involves interaction with people who do not know Sign Language (SL) or even during SL learning. Unsurprisingly, digital technologies emerged to minimize such educational challenges. This paper presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on using a prominent digital technology: Augmented Reality (AR). It synthesizes the literature on AR-based learning for people who are DHH. We seek to identify design elements and their impacts on existing research dedicated to applying AR to this learning context. Our work consisted of searching scientific databases and performing the Snowballing method (Backward and Forward) on their citations and references. Out of 1694 documents, we found 26 studies published in journals and conferences between 2006 and 2020 that use AR for DHH education. As a result, the SLR identified 12 studies focused on Sign Language (SL) teaching and four on Mathematics learning. Most of these studies use marker-based solutions (60%); they reported positive impacts on the DHH students' motivation, interaction, and learning. We did not find prevalence in research methodologies and methods used during AR tool evaluations, and only one study uses AR for Science learning. SLR studies also report discomfort when using head-mounted displays (40%) and problems handling the AR mobile software (20%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hearing loss and dementia are common in long-term care home (LTCH) residents, causing communication difficulties and worsened behavioural symptoms. Hearing support provided to residents with dementia requires improvement. This study is the first to use the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) to identify barriers and propose interventions to improve the provision of hearing support by LTCH staff. Semi-structured interviews with 10 staff members were conducted. Transcripts were analysed according to the BCW's Theoretical Domains Framework alongside reflective thematic analysis. Relevant intervention functions and exemplar interventions were proposed. Staff believed hearing support to be beneficial to residents (Beliefs about Consequences) but lacked knowledge of hearing loss management (Knowledge). Poor collaborations between LTCHs and audiology (Environmental Context and Resources), led to despondency, and apprehension about traditional hearing aids for residents (Optimism). Despite feeling responsible for hearing support, staff lacked personal accountability (Social/Professional Role and Identity). Future interventions should include staff Training (on hearing support), Education (on the consequences of unsupported hearing loss), Enablement (dementia-friendly hearing devices), Incentivisation and Modelling (of Hearing Champions) and Environmental Restructuring (flexible audiology appointments to take place within the LTCH). Interventions should be multi-faceted to boost the capabilities, opportunities and motivations of LTCH staff. Hearing support for care home residents with dementia: Long-term care staff report inadequate knowledge and awareness of how to support residents' hearing needs and a lack of personal accountability for providing hearing support. They also report poor collaborations with audiologists and apprehension about traditional hearing aids. Barriers to hearing support stem from gaps in the capabilities, opportunities and motivations of staff, therefore, interventions should be designed to target all three constructs. Interventions to aid hearing support provision should target staffs' education, training, enablement, persuasion, modelling, incentivisation and environmental restructuring to boost staff capabilities, opportunities and motivations to provide hearing support. Social participation in school, including schoolyard interactions, is considered important for all aspects of child development. Students with disabilities, such as those who are deaf and hard‐of‐hearing, are at risk of experiencing inaccessibility and social exclusion in mainstream classes, yet this has been hard researched in the schoolyard context. We exploratively compared preadolescents (M = 10.48, SD = .93) with (N = 8) and without (N = 207) hearing loss in their continuous schoolyard interactions during 21 recess assessments, using proximity sensors and field observations, alongside measurements of peer acceptance, friendships and sense of connectedness, based on peer nominations and self‐reports. Deaf and hard‐of‐hearing preadolescents spent less time interacting in the schoolyard, a trend which was stable throughout recess. Deaf and hard‐of‐hearing students interacted with the same number of partners as their classmates, but posthoc analyses suggest that towards the end of long recess periods they had a sharper drop in the number of their interaction partners. Field observations suggest that deaf and hard‐of‐hearing preadolescents who were socially active became more isolated the longer the break lasted, and that physical proximity did not necessarily indicate positive interactions. Findings underscore the importance of using multimethod designs that assess various dimensions of social participation and account for the temporal dynamics of recess interactions. Proximity sensors, combined with qualitative observations, enabled to detect social difficulties not detected by more traditional measures, hence valuable for social inclusion research and interventions. The article discusses research which investigated the effectiveness of group-play intervention to enhance the facial emotion recognition (FER) ability of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) preschool children. It explored the learning procedure for basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger included in the training program, the importance of FER ability in the social interactions of DHH children, and the applicability of group-play activities in classroom settings.

BACKGROUND: Deaf people using sign and/or spoken language and hearing-impaired people using spoken language face frequent difficulties in activities of daily living due to the communication barriers. Among the main strategies to compensate or mitigate these difficulties we find assistive devices: video relay services, cochlear implant, audio induction loop, FM system, hearing aids. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore factors contributing to assistive technology abandonment among deaf individuals who use sign language within the deaf community and those who use spoken language. METHODS: A non-experimental, cross-sectional, correlational design was used for the study. A semi-structured interview guide in the form of an ad hoc questionnaire containing 10 questions based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. The study was carried out in Salamanca (Spain) in the association SADAP (Association of Postlocution Hearing Loss People) and CCSS (Salamanca Cultural Center for the Deaf). RESULTS: A total of 36 people participated in the study: 6 deaf people, 9 hearing loss people, 8 relatives and 13 professionals. CONCLUSIONS: The most common factors leading to assistive technology abandonment among deaf and hearing-impaired individuals include negative perceptions of the product, malfunction issues, high maintenance costs, insufficient training, and the stigma associated with its use. SIGNIFICANCE: There is a scarcity of studies within occupational therapy focusing on individuals with hearing loss, particularly those who communicate through sign language. This population often faces activity limitations and participation restrictions. While assistive products and technologies can enhance their daily functioning, negative factors that result in abandonment or discontinuation of use remain significant concerns. Objective: Telehealth in epilepsy care is not new. During the COVID-19 public health emergency, telehealth became more readily used to deliver epilepsy care. However, a summarized guidance of use in caring for people with epilepsy utilizing telehealth is needed. Methods: Existing literature was reviewed to provide guidance on various aspects of telehealth. Billing aspects are reviewed. Recommendations and considerations along with benefits and barriers to telehealth are provided. Results: Telehealth can be a preferred delivery route of care for people with epilepsy in specific situations. Examples include psychiatric complaints, medication management, and follow-up visits for noncomplicated epilepsy care. In addition, telehealth is useful for patients who need postoperative visits, are not able to travel, or live in residential facilities. In-person care may be more suitable for patients who are medically complex, have language barriers or difficulty with resource access, hearing impaired, or have neurostimulation devices where remote monitoring or programming options are infeasible. Discussion: Telehealth care for people with epilepsy can be a useful and important method of care delivery. It should remain an option for providers to use in epilepsy clinical care. To investigate the effect of hearing aid (HA) intervention on long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) changes in first-time and experienced HA users using the 15D questionnaire. Secondly, the study explored the relationship between clinical parameters and changes in 15D scores. A prospective observational study. The study population included 1562 patients (1113 first-time and 449 experienced HA users) referred for HA rehabilitation. All patients responded to the 15D at baseline, two months after HA fitting, and at long-term follow-up (698 ± 298 d). Among both first-time and experienced HA users, significant improvements in hearing-dimension (15D-3) score were observed at two-month follow-up which sustained at long-term follow-up. 15D total scores significantly decreased at long-term follow-up. Self-reported hearing abilities, word recognition scores, and HA use time were significantly and positively correlated to increased 15D. Both groups of HA users reported improved hearing-related QoL after HA treatment which sustained at long-term follow-up but the improvement in total 15D total score did not sustain for either group. The results suggest that HA intervention positively affects hearing-related QoL among older adults with hearing loss, and the findings support the use of 15D as a tool for the evaluation of HA treatment effects. Background and Aim: Early communication skills in children with hearing loss depend on the quantity and quality of information received from parents. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of early communication skills training in developing the communication skills of infants and toddlers with cochlear implants. Methods: To this end, 54 infants and toddlers at the age range of 8–24 months with sever to profound hearing loss fitted by Cochlear Implant (CI) with their mothers participated in this study. The experimental and wait list control groups had auditory verbal therapy as the main intervention after the CI; however, the experimental group received a systematic early communication skills program. All subjects were assessed using the Communication and Symbolic Behaviour Scales Developmental Profile as the pre-and post-tests. Results: Multivariate analysis of covariance indicated the effect of systematic training on the early communication development of subjects in intervention group. Conclusion: Teaching the parents how to interact with infants and toddlers with CI could improve the communication skills of the infants and therefore it’s recommended to be included in the auditory rehabilitation programs. Purpose: This study explored the facilitatory effect of visual articulatory cues on the identification of Mandarin lexical tones by children with cochlear implants (CIs) in both quiet and noisy environments. It also explored whether early implantation is associated with better use of visual cues in tonal identification. Method: Participants included 106 children with CIs and 100 normal-hearing (NH) controls. A tonal identification task was employed using a two-alternative forced-choice picture-pointing paradigm. Participants’ tonal identification accuracies were compared between audio-only (AO) and audiovisual (AV) modalities. Correlations between implantation ages and visual benefits (accuracy differences between AO and AV modalities) were also examined. Results: Children with CIs demonstrated an improved identification accuracy from AO to AV modalities in the noisy environment. Additionally, earlier implantation was significantly correlated with a greater visual benefit in noise. Conclusions: These findings indicated that children with CIs benefited from visual cues on tonal identification in noise, and early implantation enhanced the visual benefit. Background/Aim: Hearing impairment affects a small but significant percentage of newborns (0.1-0.4%). Newborn hearing screening (NHS) is recommended for early detection and treatment. The implementation of NHS can vary among countries. In this study, we present the methodology, organization, and technical requirements of NHS. This study analyzed results from a tertiary hospital, identified issues, and proposed solutions. Patients and Methods: In the studied region, there are five maternity hospitals and a perinatal intensive care center and in 2020, there were 5,864 live births. Screening is performed at three levels. The first screening is conducted on the 2nd-3rd day of a newborn's life in a maternity hospital, the first rescreening on the 3rd-6th week at a relevant ENT department, and the second rescreening on the 3rd-6th month of life at the regional screening center where the central database is also held. Results: In the studied region, 5,793 out of 5,864 (98.79%) newborns received NHS in 2020. Of these, 120 (2.07%) were tested positive on their first screening. Ninetyfour patients (78.3%) of those attended the ENT department for a first rescreening. Thirty-four patients (0.59% of total) were tested positive again and referred to the regional screening center. Out of the 27 patients who attended the second rescreening, four (0.07% of the total) were ultimately diagnosed with hearing impairment. Conclusion: Our study found that newborn hearing screening (NHS) in our region achieved a high compliance rate of 98.8% for initial screenings in 2020. However, challenges remain in the rescreening process due to data management issues, interregional cooperation, and public awareness. The recent implementation of mandatory screenings, updated guidelines, and a centralized database is expected to enhance the effectiveness of NHS.
