Background: Physical educators often reported being ill-equipped to teach autistic children. Furthermore, autistic children often report having negative experiences in physical education. The physical educator is key to shaping these experiences; however, research examining these educators' perspective towards teaching autistic children is limited. Aims: The purpose of this study was to explore physical educators' experiences working with autistic children. Method: A sequential explanatory mixed methods approach was utilized by first administering a questionnaire to physical educators about their perceptions towards teaching autistic children, and second, conducting in-depth interviews with a subset of the sample. Results: Survey data revealed that participants perceived that a variety of autistic characteristics challenging their ability to effectively teach autistic children. These challenges were further elaborated on in qualitative data in the theme of 'autism is a spectrum: an array of challenges'. Moreover, participants discussed strategies employed to effectively work with autistic children (theme 2: 'best practices'), including the importance of relationship building (theme 3: 'relationship building is vital'). Conclusions/Implications: Although physical educators are using various evidence-based practices and hold some views that the challenges autistic children face are partly attributed to society and the structures within it, a medical model viewpoint continues to be prominent. Future research should examine how physical educators form their views towards teaching autistic children.

Improving physical activity (PA) levels in autistic adults is an important population health goal. Limiting efforts to achieve this goal is an incomplete understanding of the barriers to PA in this high-risk group. This study utilized cross-sectional data collected via an electronic survey from 253 autistic adults aged 18-50 years to examine their perceived barriers to PA, how PA barriers differed by demographic factors, and the relationship between PA barriers and meeting PA guidelines. The Barriers to Physical Activity scale assessed the independent variable. Lack of motivation to exercise, perceiving exercise as boring, and lack of transportation were the most strongly endorsed barriers to PA. Participants who reported these barriers were significantly less likely ([less than or equal to] 50%) to meet PA guidelines.

Special education administrators have an influence over adapted physical education (APE) services, however little research to date has assessed special education administrators' knowledge of APE services. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine special education administrators' knowledge of APE services. Fifty-one special education administrators completed a 21-question content knowledge test about key areas within the field of APE. A series of exploratory t-tests were used to determine whether their overall test scores differed significantly by a variety of demographic variables (e.g., gender, prior APE training). In addition, a repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine whether there were any significant differences between the three subsections of the test. Participants' overall test scores were approximately 40% (M = 8.41, SD = 2.28), which was similar to all three sub-sections within the test ('federal laws and APE' = 43%, M = 3.04, SD = 1.34; 'best teaching practices in APE' = 38%, M = 2.76, SD = 1.29; 'inclusion and least restrictive environment and APE' = 39%, M = 2.63, SD = 1.06). Test scores did not significantly differ by any of the demographic variables, p > 0.05. Recommendations for future research and professional development are discussed.

Special education administrators need an understanding of adapted physical education (APE) educational service delivery in order to properly supervise APE service delivery to students with disabilities. However, some preliminary research has suggested that special education administrators have a general lack of knowledge related to APE. Content acquisition podcasts (CAPs) may provide them with the knowledge needed to effectively supervise APE services. The purposes of this study were to examine the impact of CAPs on special education administrators' knowledge specific to APE and determine how special education administrators perceived CAPs as a form of professional development. Qualitative analyses, t-tests, and a repeated measures ANOVA were used to determine CAPs' impact on 29 participants. Results revealed that the participants had a low understanding of APE; however the CAPs were found to increase the participants' knowledge. In addition, the participants had positive perceptions towards the CAPs as a form of professional development.

Introduction: The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the literature on the correlates and risk factors of anxiety among adults with ID. Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted across six major electronic databases. From an initial screening of 844 records, 13 studies were included for full-text review. Factors associated with anxiety were categorized utilizing the biopsychosocial model. Methodological quality was evaluated. Results: Correlates of anxiety were identified at all levels of the biopsychosocial model, including psychological or psychiatric diagnoses, level of ID, gender, chronic health conditions, stressful life events, and social interactions. Modifiable correlates were discussed as potential targets for designing anxiety interventions for adults with ID. Conclusion: Despite the increased recognition of the mental health needs of individuals with ID in recent years, this review highlighted a dearth of research investigating the risk factors of anxiety among this population.

Personal beliefs and attitudes about body weight and body image are important determinants of weight management practices. To inform efforts to prevent and treat obesity among autistic adults, this study examined how autistic adults perceive weight management, body weight, and body image. Eleven adults participated in semi-structured interviews. Consistent with an interpretive paradigm, an interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology was employed, resulting in four themes: (a) "Mental and physical health: direct and indirect interactions," (b) "ASD traits and health-related behaviors," (c) "Body dissatisfaction: Unrealistic ideals and misperceptions," and (d) "Sources of information." This study's findings have several implications for research and practice. First, participants viewed overweight and obesity as just one component of a holistic perspective of health. A dynamic, bidirectional relationship between mental health and physical health, including overweight/obesity was described, leading us to posit that the promotion of mental health is crucial for the promotion of overall health among autistic adults. Second, body dissatisfaction was pervasive among participants in this sample. This finding requires future research as it may be an important target for intervention, with relevance for mental health and weight management practices. Finally, interactions with medical professionals regarding weight management were perceived to be inadequate.

Background: Although a growing body of literature has explored the physical activity experiences from the perspective of children on the autism spectrum, the perspective of autistic adults remains largely unheard. Due to this absence of perspective, there exists limited knowledge of the appropriateness and generalizability of current models and theories of physical activity for this population. Methods: A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted to explore the experiences of adoption and maintenance of physical activity from the direct perspective of autistic adults. Autistic adults (n=23) from the United States and the United Kingdom were recruited. Results: A total of 29 codes emerged from the coding process. These codes were formed into four broad categories: (1) individual attributes; (2) environmental factors; (3) social relationships; and (4) social experiences. The interconnectedness of these four categories was explored. Conclusions: The findings and presented model highlight the importance of building successful experiences for young children on the autism spectrum, so that they are more likely to continue physical activity into their adult life. Furthermore, findings emphasize the importance of creating noncompetitive, sensory-friendly physical activity experiences for autistic adults that offer flexibility in social engagement.

Faced with a lack of formal professional development, physical educators are turning to social media networks (SMN) to access professional communities and informal professional development. Yet, to what extent physical educators who teach students with disabilities are using SMNs for PD purposes is currently unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore how physical educators who teach students with disabilities are using SMNs for professional development purposes. Online survey data was collected from 94 participants. Descriptive statistics were reported and SMN usage patterns were examined by age, gender, and previous professional development experience. Results showed that a variety of SMN platforms were used by participants to receive information on a range of topics (e.g., instruction, equipment). The potential of SMN for professional development in the field of adapted physical education and future research recommendations are discussed.

Research on physical activity programming for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is scant. The aim of this study was to assess the nature of physical activity programming conducted in ASD units in Irish primary schools, in addition to assessing the perceived benefits and challenges among teachers. An online questionnaire was sent to every primary school with an ASD unit in Ireland (n = 380). Questions pertained to the amount and type of physical activity being conducted, in addition to questions on physical activity facilities, training, and the teachers' perceived challenges and benefits. Data were gathered on 69 ASD units. In the majority of units (74.24%), physical education classes were held daily, with the most frequent duration (45.45%) being 10-20 minutes. The most common types of activities performed included walking (92.42%), running (81.82%), and jogging (60.61%). For the first time, data on children and adolescents with disabilities in Ireland are reported based on the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance Para Report Card methodology. The most recent data from the last 10 years were used in the grading process (A+ to F), and indicators with insufficient data were graded as incomplete. Of the 10 indicators from the Global Matrix Para Report Cards, grades were assigned to Overall Physical Activity (F), Organized Sport (D), Active Transport (D−), Sedentary Behaviors (D−), Family & Peers (C), School (C−), Community & Environment (B−), and Government (B). Irish disability sport organizations were invited to assess the research-led audit and provided commentary around the final grading. The contextual discussion of the grades is presented through the lens of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats with the purpose being to provide direction for the reduction of physical activity disparities among children with disabilities. The U.S. Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth has tracked 10 physical activity (PA) indicators common to the Active Healthy Kids Global Matrix since 2014. This article expands on the U.S. report cards by presenting PA indicator assessments among children and adolescents with disabilities. Grades for indicators were assigned based on a search of peer-reviewed articles presenting nationally representative data. The Global Matrix 3.0 benchmarks and grading framework guided the process. Grades for overall PA, sedentary behaviors, organized sports, and school were F, D+, D+, and D, respectively. Insufficient evidence existed to assign grades to the remaining six indicators. There is a need in the United States for targeted PA promotion strategies that are specific to children and adolescents with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandates that parental input be considered when making educational decisions for children with disabilities, including in physical education. However, parents of children with disabilities often report suboptimal communication experiences with physical educators. The purpose of the current study was to examine if the initiation of a parent–physical educator relationship is influenced by whether students have a disability or not. An online message correspondence study methodology was used to detect potential disparities in the responsiveness of a sample of 320 physical educators to electronic message requests for a phone call to discuss physical education service from hypothetical parents of a child with a visual impairment (VI), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome (DS), or no disability. Parents of children with ASD had reduced odds of receiving a positive response as compared to parents of children without disabilities (15.8% vs 26.9% RR = .57). Similarly, parents of children with DS had reduced odds of receiving a positive response as compared to parents of children without disabilities (15.2% vs 26.9%, RR = .59). Strategies to promote parent–physical educator relationships are urgently needed, especially for parents of children with ASD and DS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This systematic review of literature aimed to synthesize the multilevel factors related to physical activity (PA) among adults (age 18–65) with intellectual disability living in group homes. Keyword searches were used to identify articles from electronic databases, resulting in the inclusion of 10 articles for full-text review. Data were extracted relating to study and sample characteristics and study findings. Methodological quality of the studies was also evaluated. Factors related to PA in group homes were identified at all levels of the social–ecological model. Intrapersonal factors (e.g., health and functional status, attitude to PA), interpersonal factors (e.g., staff attitude, encouragement for PA, and coparticipation in PA), and organizational factors (e.g., program offerings, staff education, and staff–client ratios) were prominent findings in the reviewed studies. The findings support a social–ecological approach for PA promotion in group homes that target intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic particle hyperthermia (MPH) enables the direct heating of solid tumors with alternating magnetic fields (AMFs). One challenge with MPH is the unknown particle distribution in tissue after injection. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) can measure the nanoparticle content and distribution in tissue after delivery. The objective of this study was to develop a clinically translatable protocol that incorporates MPI data into finite element calculations for simulating tissue temperatures during MPH. To verify the protocol, we conducted MPH experiments in tumor-bearing mouse cadavers. Five 8–10-week-old female BALB/c mice bearing subcutaneous 4T1 tumors were anesthetized and received intratumor injections of Synomag®-S90 nanoparticles. Immediately following injection, the mice were euthanized and imaged, and the tumors were heated with an AMF. We used the Mimics Innovation Suite to create a 3D mesh of the tumor from micro-computerized tomography data and spatial index MPI to generate a scaled heating function for the heat transfer calculations. The processed imaging data were incorporated into a finite element solver, COMSOL Multiphysics®. The upper and lower bounds of the simulated tumor temperatures for all five cadavers demonstrated agreement with the experimental temperature measurements, thus verifying the protocol. These results demonstrate the utility of MPI to guide predictive thermal calculations for MPH treatment planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
