The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly impacted professors' work demands and their adaptation to new technologies and work organization, namely, working from home. These changes urged us to know its impact on their quality of working life (QWL). This study aimed at characterizing the main determinants of the quality of working life in Brazilian university professors during the COVID-19 pandemic. It integrated two cross-sectional analyses, through a questionnaire applied in 2020–2021 and 2021–2022, at universities in central-western Brazil. The sample included 220 professors at the first moment and 180 at the second. The main tool used was the Quality of Working Life Questionnaire. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the significant predictors of the QWL. In 2020–2021, "Sleep quality" was the main predictor with a 15.8% contribution to explaining the QWL variability, followed by "Satisfaction with supervisors", "Depression", "Work–family conflict" and "Difficulties with materials or physical resources". In 2021–2022, the predictors that contributed most to explain the QWL variability were "Work–family conflict" and "Sleep quality" with contributions of 13.9% and 12.2%, respectively, to the coefficient of determination. "Satisfaction with students", "Difficulties in interpersonal relationships with supervisors", "Noise", "Smoking habits" and "Biological sex" had lower contributions. The knowledge of the predictors of QWL among university professors is essential to defining strategies to prevent occupational risks and promoting workers' health and sustainable quality of working life. Performing paid work is the way most people earn income to support themselves. Any paid work entails rights and obligations for both the employee and the employer. In terms of health and safety at work, the employer has full discretion, but this does not exempt the employee from any obligation. In the case of the death of a person during the exercise of the activity, several questions arise: who will answer if the person is not legally employed, whether or not there are special legal rules or the general ones will be applied, what are the conditions under which the act will be considered criminal offence. Theoretical background: Economic processes, the COVID-19 pandemic, evolving technology and aspects of demographic change including, above all, an “ageing population” remaining on the labor market have brought about dynamic changes in many canons, beliefs and areas of activity for businesses and economic organizations. In line with the idea of humanocentrism and nurturing human capital (its knowledge and experience), companies are looking for new organizational and technological solutions, whose main objective is to ensure safety and quality of work. One of the techniques/sciences that integrate the achievements of many sciences humanizing the working and living environment so that it is friendly to the psychophysical and social needs of the user is ergonomics. Ergonomics is the science that deals with the adaptation of technology (machines and tools) and working conditions to the specific needs of the user, and through its multidisciplinary and multifaceted nature has many meanings, roles and characteristics. Purpose of the article: The aim of this article is to answer questions related to the ergonomic activities of Polish enterprises and its application in practice. What does ergonomics give them? What is the source of inspiration in carrying out ergonomic activities? What is the purpose of conducting ergonomic activities? What is the essence and role of ergonomics in their business operations? Research methods: In this article, based on literature research conducted by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), National Labour Inspectorate (PIP) and Statistics Poland (GUS), two authoritative questionnaires were created (under expert supervision) to investigate ergonomic activity in the Polish business arena. The first questionnaire was sent to 15,000 enterprises and searched for ergonomic activity in the business arena. The second questionnaire was sent to a narrower group of ergonomically active enterprises, which provided answers to 100 open and closed questions. The survey was conducted between 2020 and 2022. Main findings: All three research assumptions were successfully achieved. Businesses were found, investigated and conclusions reached. Selected results from the questionnaire survey are presented in tabular form. The surveyed respondents, representatives of various business sectors of micro, small, medium and large enterprises, unequivocally stated that, in their opinion, ergonomics helps to modernise machinery and technology. In addition, ergonomic activity brings them closer to complying with current standards and legislation, thus, having a positive impact on quality, health and safety aspects. Ergonomic activity also gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to increase productivity, efficiency and work performance. The object of the study is the risks that disrupt the accomplishment of any enterprise’s missions. Therefore, mastering these risks is a significant asset for organizations and the overall health of the enterprise. Thus, working comprehensively on organizational risk prevention enables the enterprise to formulate a strategy aimed at guarding against all risk factors. Simultaneously, it identifies areas where more targeted actions need to be undertaken, potentially leading to positive changes within the company. To achieve this and allow for a robust and reliable assessment for better governance of harmful elements in the enterprise, we have used the risk mapping method. It is a data visualization tool aimed at highlighting vulnerabilities in various processes and activities that an organization faces, even allowing for informed decisions to prevent and cope with risks. Risk mapping is defined as the approach of identifying, evaluating, prioritizing, and managing risks inherent in an enterprise’s activities. It even delves into a thorough investigation of all managerial, operational, and support processes that activities require implementing. This mapping technique is based on an objective, structured, and documented description of existing risks. The assessment allows for a more detailed analysis of initial and residual risks at all levels of the enterprise, thereby facilitating the development of a prioritized action plan accompanied by an analysis of its funding. This obligation is part of a continuous improvement approach to the quality of life and working conditions, even engaging in a sustainable management process. As a case study, we have chosen to focus on the SAIDAL Group of Constantine. Through this case study, we aim to illustrate the practical implications and benefits of using risk mapping as a strategic tool for risk management in a complex organizational context. Now, having a risk map not only promotes a proactive approach to risk mitigation but also contributes to broader goals of continuous improvement and sustainable risk management practices: a necessity for any enterprise. This article addresses a specific work environment law aspect of online platform work, namely the question of whether the Scandinavian work environmental laws in their current form are suitable for protecting platform workers from health and safety risks. In considering this question, the laws of the three Scandinavian countries – Denmark, Sweden and Norway – are singled out for comparison. The article argues that the uncertain legal status of online platform workers has a potentially detrimental impact on their work environment rights. At the moment, there is no legal instrument in the Scandinavian countries directed solely at online platform work and the work environment. However, case law arising from specific scenarios demonstrates a definite need for work environment protection for online platform workers. For these workers, although their work may in some cases involve personal risk, they lack the express legal protections available to the self-employed. In such cases, it is unclear whether the Scandinavian laws on work environment are sufficiently equipped to handle online platform work if limited only to existing or default legislation.

In the processes of designing and introducing precision technologies in agriculture, there is a disproportion between the expected productivity issues and the attention paid to their uses and to the effects on the health of farmers. It is this dynamic that ergonomics tries to restore by analyzing work activity. In this article, we mobilize ergonomics to question precision agriculture, the resources it offers to farmers as well as the constraints it generates in real work. Finally, we propose to develop the analysis of the activity at different scales to support farmers in the choices that are imposed on them and to think differently about the design and development of these new technologies. Increased levels of work from home, the most significant pandemic legacy, is here to stay, necessitating its examination from different perspectives. This paper focuses on the well-being, work-life balance and health challenges this paradigm shift brings. In our survey of 241 Slovenian companies, we found that the experience of forced work from home was better than expected, though it still poses risk to well-being, work-life balance and health, and that consensual work from home positively influences worker satisfaction, leading to increased productivity. However, the forced work from home resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic is not comparable to consensual remote work because it provides a more controlled environment; it is, therefore, critical that workers and their representatives are involved in organizing work from home with management to develop strategies to better develop motivation and optimize productivity. Further research should focus on longitudinal studies to specifically examine the impact on workers in this context, which will also provide a more robust basis for formulating recommendations and policy. Contemporary globalization can have only accelerated the process of circulation of the virus in time and space. This biological risk has turned into a pandemic called COVID-19, which has had a strong impact on the functioning of companies and even paralyzed the majority of large national and international companies. except for a few strategic companies that are operating in a very degraded mode, the global economy is at its worst level in the decade perceived as the most stressful year in history by employees around the world. Thus, the health crisis will have entangled the vision of employees' work and is also pushing companies to reorganize their activities and review the organization of work. Therefore, to adapt the professional environment to the new health hazards, a clear diagnosis of the main risks is essential, which is the objective of our work. It is a qualitative study that allows the collection of information to understand and explain the facts of the managerial techniques in hospital departments in this pandemic period. The objective of such a survey is to measure the frequency characterizing the quality of life at work (situations, behaviors, opinions or attitudes, loss of reference points, anxiety and insecurity, stress and burn-out, etc.) in this pandemic period to develop a strategy and choose the most appropriate action methods. The main objective of this article is to analyze the application the application to statutory civil servants of standards relating to health, hygiene and safety in labor set out in the Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), in the Constitution, in the Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho (CLT) and in the Normas Regulamentadoras (NR) of the Ministry of Labor and Employment. For this, first we analyze the nature and legal classification of the environment, giving emphasis to its spectrum labor. Immediately thereafter, we address the current legal protection given to the environment of work by Brazilian law, registering its consecration to the worker's fundamental right, intimately unrelated to the right to life. After these considerations, we analyze the pertinence of the application of this legal framework for public servants, especially the statutory, and conclude that they are effectively covered by the protection of their health and physical integrity enshrined in these rules. Finally, the competence of the Labour Court will be verified for the assessment of the demands relating to the application of health and safety standards at work to statutory civil servants. Exposure to cytotoxic chemotherapy can result in acute and chronic conditions including nausea, headaches, rashes, miscarriages, infertility and genetic aberrations. Surface contamination can occur during drug administration, and can subsequently spread throughout the healthcare environment. Dermal contact with contaminated surfaces can lead to drug absorption. Closed system drug-transfer devices (CSTDs) were initially developed to protect pharmacists during compounding. Components include a vial adapter to prevent pressurisation leakage and a syringe connector for transferring the drug to the intravenous infusion bag. Membrane-based CSTDs require a Luer adapter for drug administration whereas Luer system-based products do not. Most European nurses are familiar with needleless connectors. Unfortunately, these devices do not provide protection from chemotherapy exposure. To decrease confusion, CytoPrevent, a multi-national, primarily European organisation has proposed the term 'closed safety system for administration' (CSSA) for Luer based CSTDs. The automation of production processes should contribute to better health and safety at work as well as reduce the exposure of workers to unfavourable working conditions, among them being shift or night shift work. The purpose of our research was to determine whether the level of automation of production processes influences the number of night shift work hours in production workers in medium and large-sized Slovenian companies. Quantitative research was conducted on a population base of 516 companies; a questionnaire was used to obtain primary data. We found that there is no statistically significant relationship between the level of production process automation and the number of production worker hours worked during a night shift (r = -0.057). The key motives for introducing automated production processes are improvements in product and process quality (n = -45) as well as worker safety improvement (n = 43). We have garnered recommendations for owners and managers of medium and largesized companies, that will have practical implications for the sustainable development of the economy as well as society. Introducción: A finales de 2019 se detectaron en Wuhan los primeros casos de una neumonía identificada por una nueva cepa de coronavirus reconocido como SARS-CoV-2, y la enfermedad que causa se denominó COVID-19, cuya propagación es más probable que ocurra cuando hay un contacto cercano (a 2 metros o menos) con una persona infectada. Es por ello que se hace necesario en cada uno de los servicios, en particular en Oftalmología, establecer las medidas al respecto. Objetivo: Relacionar las medidas higiénico sanitarias a cumplimentar en los servicios de Oftalmología y proponer las que deben de aplicarse en Cuba. Material y método: Se realiza la revisión de las publicaciones sobre la COVID-19, las características del coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, suformas de propagación, las manifestaciones clínico-epidemiológicas de la enfermedad, que incluyeron libro de prevención contra esta y el protocolo de actuación del Ministerio de Salud Pública, las propuestas de varios países e instituciones para las actividades post-COVID y la participación en el Seminario Internacional de Seguridad, Salud y Trabajo y la COVID-19, auspiciado por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud. Resultados: Establecimiento de las medidas higiénico sanitarias a cumplimentar en los servicios de Oftalmología, teniendo en cuenta las características de estos servicios y las principales regulaciones higiénico-sanitarias nacionales e internacionales ante esta pandemia. Introduction: At the end of 2019, the first cases of pneumonia identified by a new strain of coronavirus recognized as SARS-CoV-2 were detected in Wuhan, and the disease it causes was called COVID19, the spread of which is more likely to occur when there is close contact (2 meters or less) with an infected person. That is why it is necessary in each of the services, in particular in Ophthalmology, to establish the measures in this regard. Objective: To relate the hygienic-sanitary measures to be completed in the Ophthalmology services and propose those that should be applied in Cuba. Material and method: A review of the publications on COVID-19, the characteristics of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, its forms of spread, the clinical-epidemiological manifestations of the disease is carried out, which included a prevention book against it and the action protocol of the Ministry of Public Health, the proposals of various countries and institutions for post-covid activities and participation in the International Seminar on Safety, Health, and Work and COVID-19, sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization. Results: Establishment of sanitary hygiene measures to be completed in Ophthalmology services, taking into account the characteristics of these services and the main national and international hygiene-sanitary regulations in the face of this pandemic.

The Covid 19 epidemic has reached unprecedented proportions and caused catastrophic consequences in all spheres of society. The effects of this epidemic have affected business organizations, namely companies in the Republic of Serbia as well. Considering that the infectious disease Covid 19 has the character of a public danger, taking emergency measures was expected. The potential threat to the life and health of employees launched certain requirements, which were necessary to meet in order to achieve safe working conditions. The paper is based on the analysis of security of employees in emergency circumstances caused by infectious disease Covid 19. The risks and threats of Covid 19 and the importance of applying prescribed protection measures in order to achieve an acceptable level of safety and health at work, as a significant segment of complex and dynamic corporate security.

Este estudio diseña y valida un instrumento sobre competencias técnicas requeridas para gestionar la seguridad y salud en el trabajo de las empresas. Se realizó en dos momentos: primero se diseñó el instrumento con base en revisión teórica y normativa aplicada a Colombia, luego se validó con expertos y utilizó prueba piloto. En el segundo momento se aplicó a 616 hombres y mujeres, con estudios técnicos o profesionales y que tenían uno o más años de experiencia como coordinadores del sistema de gestión de seguridad y salud en el trabajo, para finalmente realizar la validación a partir de análisis estadístico de dificultad, discriminación y consistencia y Análisis Factorial Exploratorio (AFE) y Confirmatorio (AFC). Con la metodología implementada, se obtuvo un constructo de cinco dimensiones de competencias necesarias para gestionar el sistema de gestión de seguridad y salud en las organizaciones. El instrumento y constructo resultantes permiten medir las competencias en investigaciones y pueden ser insumos para la creación de otros instrumentos para la selección de personal y evaluación del desempeño en el área.

This is a summary of the results of a research work, born from a collaboration between multiple Italian bodies and published by the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (Inail) in March 2024: Second report on maritime workers. Activities and risk factors of sea workers.To disseminate the contents, the work offers a global overview of safety and health in the sector: with an analysis of accidents in the sector (which also involves some remarks on the event reporting form), workers' risk perception is examined and occupational diseases monitored through the MalProf system, managed by the Inail Research Sector and the local health authorities. Finally, an in-depth study is dedicated to exposure to asbestos on ships.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, national risk management scenarios took an unexpected course at different individual and collective scales. In France, in the field of occupational risk, long-established practices, rules, and categories have been disturbed and placed 'under stress'. The field of prevention of occupational risk, which has constituted a distinct field in health policies, with its own bodies, missions and approaches, was similarly disturbed. To describe and analyse these social phenomena, we propose using two complementary concepts: the British 'risk work' and the French 'prevention work' ['travail de prévention']. We show some of the empirical manifestations of risk work associated with prevention work and their effects on the boundaries instituted in the field of prevention at work. Our investigation used data from documentation and interviews in order to explore the experiences of two categories of professionals – physicians specialising in occupational health and home care aides – concerned with prevention during an acute phase of the pandemic. We point out that the question of protective means and equipment has been a central issue, in a context characterised by tensions between knowledge and available material resources. We also show that contradictions and points of tension between actors reveal the subjects under discussion and the more or less porous nature of the boundaries. Amid these processes, however, the principles underlying occupational health were reaffirmed, along with the need for a cooperation between workers and prevention professionals. The factors and the consequences of the "Industry 4.0" development for the human capital of the industrial enterprise were arranged in this paper. Taking into consideration the limitations of the current approaches the attention was concentrate on such human capital elements, as: education (knowledge and skills), creative abilities, motivation, health, flexibility. The particularity of this investigation is connected with the correlations between the influences of the "Industry 4.0" development on all human capital elements of the industrial enterprise, potential impacts on the educational system, the employment in industry and the labour market. The main factors of the influences of the "Industry 4.0" development on the human capital of the industrial enterprise are such as: cyber physical systems implementation in manufacturing and its automation; work places computerization; implementation and development of advanced smart-technologies and informational systems; agile adaptability to the needs of customers; uprising the new risks for the health of the employees. Furthermore, the enterprise has to know all the answers for the market demand and the ecological situation. The main characteristics of the human capital in the age of "Industry 4.0" are increasing the importance of the creative workers and their motivation; taking into account the individual peculiarities; providing the mobility and flexibility of the employees, the content of job, working hours, places of work. The preservation of health is considered as the key to the working capacity. The human capital development should be made taking into account the influences on physical and mental health of the employees. Such hazards for the human capital of the industrial enterprise were summarized: confidential data losing, forthcoming the new risks for the health of the employees, workers' creative abilities decreasing, "burnout", inappropriate motivation, etc. The consequences of the "Industry 4.0" development are creating "Education 4.0", remote work and outsourcing development, changing of the employment structure, the content of job, standards of health and safety at work. The prospects for overriding the risks and the consequences of changes should be identified taking into account the particularities of the country technological development, the demographic determinants, the indicators of the labour market, as well as the particular characteristics of the industrial enterprises. The paper analyzes the main factors that affect the balance between the professional activity and the individual resources of the workers. Repeated exposure to ergonomic risk factors can lead to health problems that cause major costs for individuals, companies, and society in general. Psychosocial risks are those aspects of work organization and management, as well as the social and environmental context, which have the potential to cause psychological or physical harm to workers. Workplace risk management measures need to pay attention to the specific risks faced by women and men, young workers, older workers, migrants or people with disabilities, and must design specific prevention and protection measures. Although SMEs have a very important social role, as a source of employment for a substantial part of the workforce, many workers employed in these enterprises are in a position to experience worse working conditions, poor quality of jobs, work and proportionately greater risks to their health, safety and well-being. Research in this area is still at an early stage, given the differences between the contexts in which the interventions take place, as well as their transfer potential. The paper offers an additional evaluation related to this problem, in relation to what works, for whom and in what context, being able to contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon.

The paper examines a situation in which an employee is entitled to terminate the contract of employment without prior notice. The case under examination occurs when the employer commits a serious violation of workers’ rights by failing to provide safe and hygienic working conditions. The paper also presents topic related controversies that have arisen in the doctrine and judicature and tries to establish at which point one may speak of a breach of fundamental labour rights and on the basis of which regulations the employer may be held liable. The authors also try to determine whether certain situations could constitute a basis for termination of the employment contract by the employee, at the same time giving rise to the right to claim damages from the employer. Other issues touched upon in the paper include the absence of a catalogue of infringements in the Polish Labour Code and the way of assessing the weight of various infringements.

The Italian construction sector suffered more than the other industrial sector the negative effects of the world economic crisis. A consequence has been a change in its organization concerning labour and managent on the health and safety issues. Evidence of this can be found in an increase of fatal accidents and occupational diseases. In particular occupational diseases became a health concern in construction. The aim of the presented research work is to assess the hazard of asbestos fibres inhalation due to decommissing of old industrial promises with roofing of asbestos. The developed approach starts from a probabilistic assessment of the risk, using the Risk Analysis tools, the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Risk assessment through the FTA is based on a backward approach: it starts from the malfunction of the system, called Top Event, in order to look for the triggering causes (events); on the contrary, the FMEA analysis is based on a forward approach: they start from a set of events and go on in order to analyse what kind of malfunctioning these can generate in the system. Both the FTA and the FMEA are applied to three approved decontamination techniques (encapsulation, confinement and removal), and for each of them operational phases, equipment, building products and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) are evaluated highlighting the procedures needed to operate in complete safety. With this approach the main factors that contribute to the increase of the risk of asbestos fibres inhalation are detected: preliminary analysis and assessment of the state of building decay, the use and maintence of PPE and machinery, and the supervision during main working phases.

This study simulated and evaluated the consequences of possible ethanol leaks in a hypothetical sugarcane biorefinery, considering climatic factors in the region of the State of São Paulo-BR. The Gaussian model was used to obtain the results of the hypothetical scenarios. From these values, an empirical mathematical model was established to describe the behavior of the system within the investigated experimental domain. The results obtained the modeling values of the hypothetical scenarios, the statistical treatment for the two responses—a range, slight damage (R1), and a range, high damage (R2), the joint analyses of variables R1 and R2, and the risk classification of catastrophic events. The consequence analysis allowed the calculation and plotting of graphs, such as the areas of thermal radiation range. Among the variables addressed in the study, the diameter of the leakage hole was the most noticeable in the range of thermal radiation. Therefore, it is relevant to make simulations to prevent hazardous material leakages by applying the exact characteristics of the plant to conduct the procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of current workplace safety, strengthening the administration and labour inspection is a fundamental objective in promoting effective social policies at both international and national levels. In accordance with the provisions of Conventions No. 81 and 129 of the International Labour Organization and on the basis of Law no. 108/1999, the Labour Inspection was established and organized in Romania. The functioning of this institution is governed by the Regulation for the organization and functioning of the Labour Inspection, approved by the Order of the Minister of Labour and Social Justice no. 1095 / 22.02.2018. The Labour Inspection is aimed at monitoring employers’ fulfilment of the legal provisions in the field of work relations, safety and health at work. The purpose of this article is to highlight some aspects of the organization, functioning and attributions of the Labour Inspection. The Labour Inspection subordinates the territorial labour inspectorates, organized in each county, in which labour inspectors work, activity which consists in exercising control over the unitary application of the legal provisions in the field of competence. A priority for fulfilling the mission of the Labour Inspection is the assurance of the quality of the control act and the way of fulfilling the attributions of the staff of the institution and of the territorial labour inspectorates. In this respect, the Inspection Quality Control Body, which operates within the Labour Inspection, was established.

Purpose – Studying the gap between improvements in operational performance of a manufacturing organization does not necessarily represent the existent of safe and healthy work. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap validating a scale about social practices. Design/methodology/approach – The literature was studied; data analysis instrument and the scale validated by Q-sort. The reliability and validity of research instrument indicators were drawing from the analysis of judges. The data were assessed by convergence matrix. Findings – It was validated five social practices factors. It was enabled the adequacy of the name of the constructs and establishment which indicators better convergence to the constructs. Research limitations/implications – The judge´s number that answered the research was low. The level of convergence related of two factors was above 50 percent. Practical implications – It is possible to achieve better levels of performance through social practices. Organizations must rethink the management and the routine of the workers to implement the operational practices. Social implications - The practices need to have with well-defined rules, as well as action to drive compliance. This vision also needs to be expanded to suppliers, customers and society. Originality/value – Highlight five points: technology is the main factor for analyzes and decisions; the search for quality leads organizations to seek practices that improve workers’ well-being, health and safety; the activities of the worker are carried out on the factory, or in the work environment; Should not to belittle the local community; culture is an essential factor to continuous improvement.

Infographics are a communication tool used in the digital environment that can present information, data or knowledge in an easy and understandable way to a wider audience. This article presents infographics as a form of communication and describes and outlines its possibilities in the field of public health and health care, with special emphasis on health and safety at work. Visualization of key statistical data, standardized elements, systems and practices in the style of infographics enables health and safety specialists to easily educate their employees about the consequences of poor health, the risks involved in work processes and the non-implementation of work safety processes and safety measures. The paper analyzes available infographics of leading institutions in the field of health and work safety in Croatia and in the world. Infographics are a recognizable form of communication worldwide. However, there is only a small number of infographics in the field of health and work safety in Croatia. It is important to raise awareness of the importance of infographics among Croatian experts working in the field of health and work safety because of the possibilities that infographics offer as a form of communication.
