Abstract

Recent evidence from observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B_s to mu+ mu- by the LHCb collaboration B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.2 * 10^{-9}), is consistent with the latest standard model prediction B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.23 +- 0.27) * 10^{-9}. While New Physics can still affect this decay amplitude, its contribution is certainly not the dominant one. We analyze branching ratios of the decays B_s to mu+ mu- X, with X = a photon or neutrino anti-neutrino pair, which can mimic B_s to mu+ mu- on portions of the parameter space where X is soft. We perform a model-independent standard model calculation of those processes incorporating heavy quark and chiral symmetries of QCD. We show that the considered contributions contribute to B_s to mu+ mu- at a sub-percent level., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, .v2 changes : fixed diagram TeX, small notation change, fixed reference

Abstract

Abstract We present an architecture for encoding two qubits within the optical “clock” transition and nuclear spin-1/2 degree of freedom of neutral ytterbium-171 atoms. Inspired by recent high-fidelity control of all pairs of states within this four-dimensional quotes space, we present a toolbox for intra-ququart (single-atom) one- and two-qubit gates, inter-ququart (two-atom) Rydberg-based two- and four-qubit gates, and quantum nondemolition (QND) readout. We then use this toolbox to demonstrate the advantages of the ququart encoding for entanglement distillation and quantum error correction which exhibit superior hardware efficiency and better performance in some cases since fewer two-atom operations are required. Finally, leveraging single-state QND readout in our ququart encoding, we present a unique approach to studying interactive circuits and to realizing a symmetry protected topological phase of a spin-1 chain with a shallow, constant-depth circuit.

Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Recent events are easy to recall, but they also interfere with recall of more distant, non-recent events. Many computational models recall non-recent memories by using the context associated with those events as a cue. But some models do little to explain how people initially activate non-recent contexts in the service of accurate recall. We addressed this limitation by evaluating two candidate mechanisms within the Context-Maintenance and Retrieval model. The first is a Backward-Walk mechanism that iteratively applies a generate/recognize process to covertly retrieve progressively less recent items. The second is a Post-Encoding Pre-Production Reinstatement (PEPPR) mechanism that formally implements a metacognitive control process that reinstates non-recent contexts prior to retrieval. Models including these mechanisms make divergent predictions about the dynamics of response production and monitoring when recalling non-recent items. Before producing non-recent items, Backward-Walk cues covert retrievals of several recent items, whereas PEPPR cues few, if any, covert retrievals of that sort. We tested these predictions using archival data from a dual-list externalized free recall paradigm that required subjects to report all items that came to mind while recalling from the non-recent list. Simulations showed that only the model including PEPPR accurately predicted covert recall patterns. That same model fit the behavioral data well. These findings suggest that self-initiated context reinstatement plays an important role in recall of non-recent memories and provides a formal model that uses a parsimonious non-hierarchical context representation of how such reinstatement might occur.

Recent evidence from observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B_s to mu+ mu- by the LHCb collaboration B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.2 * 10^{-9}), is consistent with the latest standard model prediction B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.23 +- 0.27) * 10^{-9}. While New Physics can still affect this decay amplitude, its contribution is certainly not the dominant one. We analyze branching ratios of the decays B_s to mu+ mu- X, with X = a photon or neutrino anti-neutrino pair, which can mimic B_s to mu+ mu- on portions of the parameter space where X is soft. We perform a model-independent standard model calculation of those processes incorporating heavy quark and chiral symmetries of QCD. Abstract

Expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) on small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) cell lines and tumour tissue has been investigated. Cell lines were found to express highly sialylated NCAM. Neuraminidase treatment revealed the presence of the 140- and 120-kDa isoforms with differential expression of a 95-kDa protein. Similar data were obtained with SCLC tumour tissues. These results were corroborated by Northern blotting where mRNA of 6.7 and 5.5 kb coding for the 140- and 120-kDa isoforms, respectively, were identified. In a few tumours, a weaker band of 7.4-kb mRNA coding for the 180-kDa NCAM was also identified. This result could not be confirmed biochemically due to shortage of material. Finally, a 5-kb transcript was identified in all SCLC samples examined. The NCAM isoform coded by this mRNA remains unknown. Using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we have demonstrated the presence of the VASE mini-exon in some isoforms of SCLC NCAM. The VASE mini-exon sequence in human SCLC differs from the published murine sequence by only one base change. This substitution does not result in altered amino-acid sequence.

Since detection efficiency of γ or νν̅ in modern charm-physics experiments is quite low in that region, those processes could be misidentified as Bs → μ+μ-. We perform a model-independent standard model calculation of those processes incorporating heavy quark and chiral symmetries of QCD concentrating on the soft-X region. 39. The mutagenicity of urban particulate matter in an enzyme free system is associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species

Abstract

Urban particulate matter (UPM) contributes to lung cancer incidence. UPM has been shown to be genotoxic to mammalian cells and to induce mutations in the Ames assay. Here, we have studied the induction of mutations generated by direct acting mutagenic components of UPM, using the supF forward mutation assay. Plasmid pSP189 was exposed to UPM in aqueous solution in the presence of sucrose buffer, to reduce strand breaks. The mutation frequency induced by 1@mg/@ml UPM was 4.99 mutants per 10^4 colonies. This was reduced to 0.84 and 1.48 mutants per 10^4 colonies by addition of mannitol (1mM) or EDTA (1mM), respectively. A large percentage of mutant plasmids contained frameshift mutations (57%), and 31% of mutant plasmids contained multiple mutations. Of the base substitution mutations, 88% were at GC pairs, with twice as many transversions as transitions. The types of mutations induced, the reduction of mutagenicity by the inclusion of the free radical scavenger, mannitol, or the metal chelator, EDTA, and the sequence context of the induced mutations all support the conclusion that the majority of mutations were induced by reactive oxygen species generated by metal ions present in the UPM. Most mutation studies with UPM have focused on organic carcinogens present on UPM. Our results highlight the potential contribution of metal ions to the mutagenicity of UPM.

Abstract

The synthesis of N-hydroxyparacetamol (N,4'-dihydroxyacetanilide) is reported where a copper complex of the hydroxamic acids as a protecting group is used. It has been shown to decompose between pH 7 and 12 to give products which are derived from N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine.3'-Substituted 4'-hydroxyacetanilides are formed when a nucieophile is present. The properties of N-hydroxyparacetamol are consistent with it being the toxic, reactive intermediate involved in the hepatoxicity of paracetamol.
