We present a variety of structures formed by colloidal droplets at a nematic liquid crystal-air interface, where the elastic dipole-dipole, quadrupole-quadrupole, and dipole-quadrupole interactions are all essentially involved. The colloidal structures observed not only include chains with kinks or clusters, but also comprise directional structures, such as directional chains and branches, whose direction is associated with the tilting director in the liquid crystal layer. The dipole-quadrupole interaction, originating from the polydispersity of the droplets, plays a central role for the formation of these directional structures. Clusters consisting of directional branches and chains are also observed and found to be fractal statistically., Comment: Liquid Crystals (2023)

An ultrabroad absorber based on double-ring-shaped titanium nitride (TiN) nanoresonators, which can work in high temperatures, is proposed and numerically studied. The absorber with some optimal parameters exhibits an averaged absorption of 94.6% in the range of 200 - 4000 nm (from ultraviolet to mid-infrared) and a band from 200 - 3518 nm having an absorption > 90%. We have demonstrated in detail the physical mechanisms of the ultra-broad absorption, including the dielectric lossy property of TiN material itself in shorter wavelengths and plasmonic resonances caused by the metallic property of TiN nano-resonators in longer wavelengths. In addition, the absorber shows polarization independent and wide-angle acceptance. Another absorber with double TiN nano-rings of different heights has flatter and higher absorption efficiency (more than 95% absorption) at 200-2860 nm waveband. These properties make the proposed absorbers based on TiN has great potentials in many applications, such as light trapping, photovoltaics, thermal emitters.

A patterned structure of monolithic hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on a glass substrate, which can enhance the emission of the embedded single photon emitters (SPEs), is useful for onchip single-photon sources of high-quality. Here, we design and demonstrate a monolithic hBN metasurface with quasi-bound states in the continuum mode at emission wavelength with ultrahigh Q values to enhance fluorescence emission of SPEs in hBN. Because of ultrahigh electric field enhancement inside the proposed hBN metasurface, an ultrahigh Purcell factor (3.3*10^4) is achieved. In addition, the Purcell factor can also be strongly enhanced in most part of the hBN structure, which makes the hBN metasurface suitable for e.g. monolithic quantum photonics., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Predicting and modeling human behavior and finding trends within human decision-making processes is a major problem of social science. Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) is the fundamental strategic question in many game theory problems and real-world competitions. Finding the right approach to beat a particular human opponent is challenging. Here we use an AI (artificial intelligence) algorithm based on Markov Models of one fixed memory length (abbreviated as "single AI") to compete against humans in an iterated RPS game. We model and predict human competition behavior by combining many Markov Models with different fixed memory lengths (abbreviated as "multi-AI"), and develop an architecture of multi-AI with changeable parameters to adapt to different competition strategies. We introduce a parameter called "focus length" (a positive number such as 5 or 10) to control the speed and sensitivity for our multi-AI to adapt to the opponent's strategy change. The focus length is the number of previous rounds that the multi-AI should look at when determining which Single-AI has the best performance and should choose to play for the next game. We experimented with 52 different people, each playing 300 rounds continuously against one specific multi-AI model, and demonstrated that our strategy could win against more than 95% of human opponents.

Dispersion engineering is among the most important steps towards a promising optical frequency comb. We propose a new and general approach to trim frequency combs using a self-adaptive boundary of the optical mode at different wavelengths in a sub-wavelength structured waveguide. The feasibility of ultra-wide bandwidth dispersion engineering comes from the fact that light at different wavelengths automatically self-adapts to slightly different effective spatial spans determined by the effective indices of the mode. Using this self-adaptive variation on the confinement, we open up the window of low-anomalous dispersion in a large wavelength range, and theoretically demonstrate frequency combs with improved bandwidths with respect to the state-of-art in several different waveguide configurations considered, for a matter of illustration, in the silicon photonic platform. This strategy opens up a new design space for trimming the spectrum of frequency combs using high-index-contrast platforms and provides benefit to various versatile nonlinear applications in which the manipulation of energy spacing and phase matching are pivotal.

CNN is a powerful tool for many computer vision tasks, achieving much better result than traditional methods. Since CNN has a very large capacity, training such a neural network often requires many data, but it is often expensive to obtain labeled images in real practice, especially for object detection, where collecting bounding box of every object in training set requires many human efforts. This is the case in detection of retail products where there can be many different categories. In this paper, we focus on applying CNN to detect 324-categories products in situ, while requiring no extra effort of labeling bounding box for any image. Our approach is based on an algorithm that extracts bounding box from in-vitro dataset and an algorithm to simulate occlusion. We have successfully shown the effectiveness and usefulness of our methods to build up a Faster RCNN detection model. Similar idea is also applicable in other scenarios.

We propose a new approach to provide wideband multi-mode four-wave mixing, independent of the intrinsic waveguide dispersion. We adopt concepts from quantum mechanics and sub-wavelength engineering to design an effective photon well, with a graded potential along the waveguide cross section, that provides flexible control over the mode confinement. The self-adaptive nature of the waveguide boundary allows different spatial modes with equi-spaced frequencies and shared propagation wavevector, automatically fulfilling both, energy conservation and wavevector phase matching conditions. Capitalizing on this concept, we show phase-matching among modes separated by 400 nm (bridging from telecom wavelengths to almost 2{\mu}m), with less than 5% deviation in a remarkably large bandwidth exceeding 300 nm. Furthermore, we also show the flexibility of the proposed approach that can be seamlessly adapted to different technology platforms with the same or different waveguide thicknesses. This strategy opens a new design space for versatile nonlinear applications in which the manipulation of energy spacing and phase matching is pivotal, e.g. all-optical signal processing with four-wave mixing, mid-infrared light generation, Brillouin scattering with selectable phonon energy, etc.

We propose a method for generating Fano resonance in a standalone silicon nanobeam cavity which eliminates the inconvenience from the unexpected side-coupled bus waveguide and unlocks new opportunities to develop ultra-compact and ultra-fast electro-optical modulators.. Taking advantage from a spatial-division multiplexing principle of operation between transverse electric modes, a sharp resonant mode and an efficient flat background mode are simultaneously generated in the same silicon channel for the realization of efficient Fano resonances. Unambiguous asymmetric spectrum lineshapes are thoroughly investigated using numerical and analytical methods and experimentally demonstrated in the near infra-red around lambda=1.55{\mu}m, presenting an extinction ratio of about 17dB for a delta lambda =56 pm wavelength detuning for the 1st cavity mode (Q-factor Q=34000), and higher than 23 dB extinction ratio for a delta lambda=366 pm detuning for the 2nd cavity mode (Q=5600). These extinction ratios are 10~15 dB larger than their Lorentzian counterparts exhibiting similar Q factors. Silicon Fano modulation based on plasma dispersion effect is proposed, for which an energy consumption as low as few fJ/bit is estimated. Fano cavity scheme addressed in this paper presents a great potential for low power consumption silicon optical modulators and provides anew insight to the advantages of Fano resonances for optical modulation schemes., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

This research addressed whether interactions with social robots could facilitate joint attention of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two conditions of initiators, namely 'Human' vs. 'Robot' were measured with 15 children with ASD and 15 age-matched typically developing (TD) children. Apart from fixation and gaze transition, a new longest common subsequence (LCS) approach was proposed to analyze eye-movement traces. Results revealed that children with ASD showed deficits of joint attention. Compared to the human agent, robot facilitate less fixations towards the targets, but it attracted more attention and allowed the children to show gaze transition and to follow joint attention logic. Thermal radiation can be substantially enhanced in the near-field scenario due to the tunneling of evanescent waves. The monolayer graphene could play a vital role in this process owning to its strong infrared plasmonic response, however, which still lacks an experimental verification due to the technical challenges. Here, we manage to make a direct measurement about plasmon-mediated thermal radiation between two macroscopic graphene sheets using a custom-made setup. Super-Planckian radiation with efficiency 4.5 times larger than the blackbody limit is observed at a 430-nm vacuum gap on insulating silicon hosting substrates. The positive role of graphene plasmons is further confirmed on conductive silicon substrates which have strong infrared loss and thermal emittance. Based on these, a thermophotovoltaic cell made of the graphene-silicon heterostructure is lastly discussed. Acoustic metamaterials have become a novel and effective way to control sound waves and design acoustic devices. In this study, we design a 3D acoustic metamaterial lens (AML) to achieve point-to-point acoustic communication in air: any acoustic source (i.e. a speaker) in air enclosed by such an AML can produce an acoustic image where the acoustic wave is focused (i.e. the field intensity is at a maximum, and the listener can receive the information), while the acoustic field at other spatial positions is low enough that listeners can hear almost nothing. Unlike a conventional elliptical reflective mirror, the acoustic source can be moved around inside our proposed AML. Numerical simulations are given to verify the performance of the proposed AML.

Dual-functional nanoparticles, with the property of aggregation-induced emission and the capability of reactive oxygen species, were used to achieve passive/active targeting of tumor. Good contrast in in vivo imaging and obvious therapeutic efficiency were realized with a low dose of AIE nanoparticles as well as a low power density of light, resulting in negligible side effects., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate facile optical manipulation of shape of birefringent colloidal microparticles made from liquid crystal elastomers. Using soft lithography and polymerization, we fabricate elastomeric microcylinders with weakly undulating director oriented on average along their long axes. These particles are infiltrated with gold nanospheres acting as heat transducers that allow for an efficient localized transfer of heat from a focused infrared laser beam to a submicrometer region within a microparticle. Photothermal control of ordering in the liquid crystal elastomer using scanned beams allows for a robust control of colloidal particles, enabling both reversible and irreversible changes of shape. Possible applications include optomechanics, microfluidics, and reconfigurable colloidal composites with shape-dependent self-assembly.

Abundant in nature, colloids also find increasingly important applications in science and technology, ranging from direct probing of kinetics in crystals and glasses to fabrication of third-generation quantum-dot solar cells. Because naturally occurring colloids have a shape that is typically determined by minimization of interfacial tension (for example, during phase separation) or faceted crystal growth, their surfaces tend to have minimum-area spherical or topologically equivalent shapes such as prisms and irregular grains (all continuously deformable - homeomorphic - to spheres). Although toroidal DNA condensates and vesicles with different numbers of handles can exist and soft matter defects can be shaped as rings and knots, the role of particle topology in colloidal systems remains unexplored. Here we fabricate and study colloidal particles with different numbers of handles and genus g ranging from 1 to 5. When introduced into a nematic liquid crystal - a fluid made of rod-like molecules that spontaneously align along the so-called "director" - these particles induce three-dimensional director fields and topological defects dictated by colloidal topology. Whereas electric fields, photothermal melting and laser tweezing cause transformations between configurations of particle-induced structures, three-dimensional nonlinear optical imaging reveals that topological charge is conserved and that the total charge of particle-induced defects always obeys predictions of the Gauss-Bonnet and Poincare-Hopf index theorems. This allows us to establish and experimentally test the procedure for assignment and summation of topological charges in three-dimensional director fields. Our findings lay the groundwork for new applications of colloids and liquid crystals that range from topological memory devices, through new types of self-assembly, to the experimental study of low-dimensional topology.

We describe a soft matter system of self-organized oblate micelles and plasmonic gold nanorods that exhibit a negative orientational order parameter. Because of anisotropic surface anchoring interactions, colloidal gold nanorods tend to align perpendicular to the director describing the average orientation of normals to the discoidal micelles. Helicoidal structures of highly concentrated nanorods with a negative order parameter are realized by adding a chiral additive and are further controlled by means of confinement and mechanical stress. Polarization-sensitive absorption, scattering, and two-photon luminescence are used to characterize orientations and spatial distributions of nanorods. Self-alignment and effective-medium optical properties of these hybrid inorganic-organic complex fluids match predictions of a simple model based on anisotropic surface anchoring interactions of nanorods with the structured host medium.
