Search

Cosmicflows-2 is a compilation of distances and peculiar velocities for over 8000 galaxies. Numerically the largest contributions come from the luminosity-linewidth correlation for spirals, the TFR, and the related Fundamental Plane relation for E/S0 systems, but over 1000 distances are contributed by methods that provide more accurate individual distances: Cepheid, Tip of the Red Giant Branch, Surface Brightness Fluctuation, SNIa, and several miscellaneous but accurate procedures. Our collaboration is making important contributions to two of these inputs: Tip of the Red Giant Branch and TFR. A large body of new distance material is presented. In addition, an effort is made to assure that all the contributions, our own and those from the literature, are on the same scale. Overall, the distances are found to be compatible with a Hubble Constant H_0 = 74.4 +-3.0 km/s/Mpc. The great interest going forward with this data set will be with velocity field studies. Cosmicflows-2 is characterized by a great density and high accuracy of distance measures locally, falling to sparse and coarse sampling extending to z=0.1., Comment: To be published in Astronomical Journal. We present a catalogue of 2135 galaxy redshifts from the VLT LBG Redshift Survey (VLRS), a spectroscopic survey of z ~ 3 galaxies in wide fields centred on background quasi-stellar objects. We have used deep optical imaging to select galaxies via the Lyman-break technique. Spectroscopy of the Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) was then made using the Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS), giving a mean redshift of z=2.79. We analyse the clustering properties of the VLRS sample and also of the VLRS sample combined with the smaller area Keck-based survey of Steidel et al. From the semiprojected correlation function, wp({\sigma}) we find that the results are well fit with a single power-law model, with clustering scale lengths of r0=3.46+-0.41 and 3.83+-0.24 Mpc/h, respectively. We note that the corresponding combined {\xi}(r) slope is flatter than for local galaxies at {\gamma} = 1.5-1.6 rather than {\gamma}=1.8. Within the "Cosmic Flows" project, I-band photometry of 524 relatively nearby galaxies has been carried out over the course of several years with the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope and a camera with a 7.5 arcmin field of view. The primary scientific purpose was to provide global magnitudes and inclinations for galaxies for the purpose of measuring distances through the correlation between galaxy luminosities and rotation rates. The accuracy on a total magnitude is 0.08 mag. The observations typically extend to 7-8 exponential disk scalelengths so the data are useful for studies of the structural properties of galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the initial imaging and spectroscopic data acquired as part of the VLT VIMOS Lyman-break galaxy Survey. UBR (or UBVI) imaging covers five 36'x36' fields centred on bright z>3 QSOs, allowing ~21,000 22 LBGs and 10 z>2 QSOs from a total of 19 VIMOS pointings. From the galaxy spectra, we observe a 625+-510 km/s velocity offset between the ISM absorption and Ly-alpha emission line redshifts. Using the photometric and spectroscopic catalogues, we have analysed the galaxy clustering at z~3. In the photometric case, the angular correlation function, w(theta), is well fit by a double power-law with clustering scale-length, r_0 = 3.19+0.32-0.54 Mpc/h for r < 1 Mpc/h and r_0 = 4.59+0.31-0.33 Mpc/h at larger scales. Using the redshift sample we estimate the semi-projected correlation function, w_p(sigma) and find r_0 = 3.67+0.23-0.24 Mpc/h for the VLT sample and r_0 = 3.98+0.14-0.15 Mpc/h for a combined VLT+Keck sample. From the z-space correlation functions and assuming the above xi(r) models, we find that the combined VLT and Keck surveys require a galaxy velocity dispersion, ^1/2 ~ 700 km/s, higher than the ~400 km/s found by previous authors. We also measure a value for the gravitational growth rate parameter of beta(z=3) = 0.48+-0.17, implying a low value for the bias of b = 2.06+1.1-0.5. This value is consistent with the galaxy clustering amplitude which gives b = 2.22+-0.16, assuming the standard cosmology, implying that the evolution of the gravitational growth rate is also consistent with Einstein gravity. We have compared our LBG clustering amplitudes with lower redshift measurements and find that the clustering strength is not inconsistent with that of low-redshift L* spirals for simple 'long-lived' galaxy models., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Context: Difference imaging has proven to be a powerful technique for detecting and monitoring the variability of unresolved stellar sources in M 31. Using this technique in surveys of galaxies outside the Local Group could have many interesting applications. Aims: The goal of this paper is to test difference imaging photometry on Centaurus A, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, at a distance of 4 Mpc. Methods: We obtained deep photometric data with the Wide Field Imager at the ESO/MPG 2.2m at La Silla spread over almost two months. Applying the difference imaging photometry package DIFIMPHOT, we produced high-quality difference images and detected variable sources. The sensitivity of the current observational setup was determined through artificial residual tests. Results: In the resulting high-quality difference images, we detect 271 variable stars. We find a difference flux detection limit corresponding to m_R~24.5. Based on a simple model of the halo of Centaurus A, we estimate that a ground-based microlensing survey would detect in the order of 4 microlensing events per year due to lenses in the halo. Conclusions: Difference imaging photometry works very well at the distance of Centaurus A and promises to be a useful tool for detecting and studying variable stars in galaxies outside the local group. For microlensing surveys, a higher sensitivity is needed than achieved here, which would be possible with a large ground-based telescope or space observatory with wide-field imaging capabilities., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The recent explosion of recorded digital data and its processed derivatives threatens to overwhelm researchers when analysing their experimental data or when looking up data items in archives and file systems. While current hardware developments allow to acquire, process and store 100s of terabytes of data at the cost of a modern sports car, the software systems to handle these data are lagging behind. This general problem is recognized and addressed by various scientific communities, e.g., DATAGRID/EGEE federates compute and storage power over the high-energy physical community, while the astronomical community is building an Internet geared Virtual Observatory, connecting archival data. These large projects either focus on a specific distribution aspect or aim to connect many sub-communities and have a relatively long trajectory for setting standards and a common layer. Here, we report "first light" of a very different solution to the problem initiated by a smaller astronomical IT community. It provides the abstract "scientific information layer" which integrates distributed scientific analysis with distributed processing and federated archiving and publishing. By designing new abstractions and mixing in old ones, a Science Information System with fully scalable cornerstones has been achieved, transforming data systems into knowledge systems. This break-through is facilitated by the full end-to-end linking of all dependent data items, which allows full backward chaining from the observer/researcher to the experiment. Key is the notion that information is intrinsic in nature and thus is the data acquired by a scientific experiment. We report on a search for the optical counterparts of 175 um - selected sources from the Far-Infrared Background (FIRBACK) survey in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) N2 field. Applying a likelihood ratio technique to optical catalogues from the Isaac Newton Telescope - Wide Field Survey (INT--WFS), we found optical identifications for 33 out of 55 FIRBACK sources in this field. These were then reassessed in the light of associations with the ELAIS final catalogue for the the N2 field, to yield a final set of 31 associations. We have investigated the nature of this population through a comparison of their observed spectral energy distributions with predictions from radiative transfer models which simulate the emission from both cirrus and starburst components. We find the far-infrared sources to be 80 per cent star bursting galaxies with their starburst component at a high optical depth. The resulting SEDs were used to estimate far-infrared luminosities, star formation rates, dust temperatures and dust masses. The N2 FIRBACK population is found to consist of four suspected ULIRGs, a number of LIRGs and a population of low redshift quiescently star forming galaxies. We present a re--analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) 90mum observations carried out with ISOPHOT, an instrument on board the ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). With more than 12 sq. deg., the ELAIS survey is the largest area covered by ISO in a single program and is about one order of magnitude deeper than the IRAS 100mum survey. The data analysis is presented and was mainly performed with the Phot Interactive Analysis software but using the pairwise method of Stickel et al. (2003) for signal processing from ERD (Edited Raw Data) to SCP (Signal per Chopper Plateau). The ELAIS 90mum catalogue contains 229 reliable sources with fluxes larger than 70 mJy and is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com. Number counts are presented and show an excess above the no-evolution model prediction. This confirms the strong evolution detected at shorter(15mum) and longer (170mum) wavelengths in other ISO surveys. The ELAIS counts are in agreement with previous works at 90mum and in particular with the deeper counts extracted from the Lockman hole observations. Comparison with recent evolutionary models show that the models of Franceschini et al. and Guiderdoni et al. which includes a heavily-extinguished population of galaxies give the best fit to the data. Deeper observations are nevertheless required to better discriminate between the model predictions in the far-infrared and are scheduled with the Spitzer Space Telescope which already started operating and will also be performed by ASTRO-F., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS, in press

We present a multi-wavelength catalog (15 um, R, K-band, 1.4 GHz flux) plus spectroscopic identifications for 406 15 um sources detected in the ELAIS region S1, over the flux density range 0.5

We present the 90 micron luminosity function of the Final Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS), extending the sample size of our previous analysis (paper IV) by about a factor of 4. Our sample extends to z=1.1, around 50 times the comoving volume of paper IV, and 10^{7.7} < h^{-2}L/Lsun < 10^{12.5}. From our optical spectroscopy campaigns of the northern ELAIS 90 mircon survey (7.4 deg^2 in total, to S(90um)>70mJy), we obtained redshifts for 61% of the sample (151 redshifts) to B<21 identified at 7 microns, 15 microns, 20cm or with bright (B<18.5) optical identifications. The selection function is well-defined, permitting the construction of the 90 micron luminosity function of the Final Analysis catalogue in the ELAIS northern fields, which is in excellent agreement with our Preliminary Analysis luminosity function in the ELAIS S1 field from paper IV. The luminosity function is also in good agreement with the IRAS-based prediction of Serjeant & Harrison (2004), which if correct requires luminosity evolution of (1+z)^{3.4 +/- 1.0} for consistency with the source counts. This implies an evolution in comoving volume averaged star formation rate at z<~1 consistent with that derived from rest-frame optical and ultraviolet surveys., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 7 pages, 5 figures. We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $\mu$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and AGN dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey, permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour-redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the ELAIS Catalogue ($> 10 %$ of 15 $\mu$m sources), many with Arp220-like colours. 10 hyperluminous infrared galaxies and 10 EROs are found in the survey. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star-formation rate between z = 0 and 1., Comment: 21 pages, 31 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have studied the optical, near-IR and radio properties of a complete sample of 43 sources detected at 15-micron in one of the deeper ELAIS repeatedly observed region. The extragalactic objects in this sample have 15-micron flux densities in the range 0.4-10 mJy, where the source counts start diverging from no evolution models. About 90% of the sources (39 out of 43) have optical counterparts brighter than I=21 mag. Eight of these 39 sources have been identified with stars on the basis of imaging data, while for another 22 sources we have obtained optical spectroscopy, reaching a high identification percentage (30/43, ~70%). All but one of the 28 sources with flux density > 0.7 mJy are identified. Most of the extragalactic objects are normal spiral or starburst galaxies at moderate redshift (z_med~0.2); four objects are Active Galactic Nuclei. We have used the 15-micron, H_alpha and 1.4-GHz luminosities as indicators of star-formation rate and we have compared the results obtained in these three bands. While 1.4-GHz and 15-micron estimates are in good agreement, showing that our galaxies are forming stars at a median rate of ~40 Mo/yr, the raw H_alpha-based estimates are a factor ~5-10 lower and need a mean correction of ~2 mag to be brought on the same scale as the other two indicators. A correction of ~2 mag is consistent with what suggested by the Balmer decrements H_alpha/H_beta and by the optical colours. Moreover, it is intermediate between the correction found locally for normal spirals and the correction needed for high-luminosity 15-micron objects, suggesting that the average extinction suffered by galaxies increases with infrared luminosity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures (3 in JPEG format), MNRAS, accepted

We examined the Fourier power spectrum characteristics of cirrus structures in 13 sky fields with faint to bright cirrus emission observed with ISOPHOT in the 90--200µm wavelength range in order to study variations of the spectral index $\alpha$. We found that $\alpha$ varies from field to field with --5.3 $\le$ $\alpha$ $\le$ --2.1. It depends on the absolute surface brightness and on the hydrogen column density. We also found different spectral indices for the same sky region at different wavelengths. Longer wavelength measurements show steeper power spectra. This can be explained by the presence of dust at various temperatures, in particular of a cold extended component. For the faintest areas of the far-infrared sky we derive a wavelength independent spectral index of $\alpha$ = --2.3$\pm$0.6 for the cirrus power spectrum. We report the discovery of the first hyperluminous infrared galaxy (HyLIG) in the course of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). This object has been detected by ISO at 6.7, 15, and 90 microns, and is found to be a broad-line, radio-quiet quasar at a redshift: z = 1.099. From a detailed multi-component model fit of the spectral energy distribution, we derive a total infrared luminosity: L_IR (1-1000 microns) ~ 1.0 x 10E13 h_65^-2 L_sun (q_0 = 0.5), and discuss the possible existence of a starburst contributing to the far-IR output. Observations to date present no evidence for lens magnification. This galaxy is one of the very few HyLIGs with an X-ray detection. On the basis of its soft X-ray properties, we suggest that this broad-line object may be the face-on analogue of narrow-line, Seyfert-like HyLIGs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present BeppoSAX observations of the Southern S1 region in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). These observations cover an area of ~1.7 sq. deg. and reach an on-axis (~0.7 sq. deg) 2-10 keV (HX) sensitivity of ~10E-13 cgs. This is the first HX analysis of an ISOCAM survey. We detect 9 sources with a signal to noise ratio SNR_HX>3, 4 additional sources with a 1.3 to 10 keV (T) SNR_T>3 and 2 additional sources which appear to be associated with QSOs with SNR_T>2.9. The number densities of the SNR_HX>3 sources are consistent with the ASCA and BeppoSAX logN-logS functions. Six BeppoSAX sources have reliable ISOCAM 15 micron counterparts within ~60 arcsec. All these ISOCAM sources have optical counterparts of R<20 mags. Five of these sources have been previously optically classified giving 4 QSOs and 1 BALQSO at z=2.2. The remaining unclassified source has X-ray and photometric properties consistent with that of a nearby Seyfert galaxy. One further HX source has a 2.6sigma ISOCAM counterpart associated with a galaxy at z=0.325. If this ISOCAM source is real, the HX/MIR properties suggest either an unusual QSO or a cD cluster galaxy. We have constructed MIR and HX spectral energy distributions to compute the expected HX/MIR ratios for these classes of objects up to z=3.2 and assess the HX/MIR survey depth. The BALQSO has an observed X-ray softness ratio and HX/MIR flux ratio similar to QSOs but different to those found for low redshift BALQSOs. This difference can be explained in terms of absorption, and suggests that high redshift BALQSOs should be comparatively easy to detect in the HX band, allowing their true fraction in the high redshift QSO population to be determined (ABRIDGED)., Comment: 27 pages (draft format), 10 figures, ApJ, in press (May 20 edition)

We present the luminosity function of 90um selected galaxies from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS), extending to z=0.3. Their luminosities are in the range 10^9 < h_65^-2 L/Lsun < 10^12, i.e. non-ultraluminous. From our sample of 37 reliably detected galaxies in the ELAIS S1 region from the Efstathiou et al. (2000) S_90 >= 100mJy database, we found optical, 15um or 1.4GHz identifications for 24 (65%). We have obtained 2dF and UK Schmidt FLAIR spectroscopy of 89% of IDs to rigid multivariate flux limits. We construct a luminosity function assuming (a) our spectroscopic subset is an unbiased sparse sample, and (b) there are no galaxies which would not be represented in our spectroscopic sample at {\it any} redshift. We argue that we can be confident of both assumptions. We find the luminosity function is well-described by the local 100um luminosity function of Rowan-Robinson, Helou & Walker (1987). {\it Assuming} this local normalisation, we derive luminosity evolution of (1+z)^{2.45\pm0.85} (95% confidence). We argue that star formation dominates the bolometric luminosities of these galaxies and we derive comoving star formation rates in broad agreement with the Flores et al. We present results and source counts at 90micron extracted from the Preliminary Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). The survey covered about 11.6 square degrees of the sky in four main areas and was carried out with the PHOT instrument onboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The survey is at least an order of magnitude deeper than the IRAS 100micron survey and is expected to provide constraints on the formation and evolution of galaxies. The majority of the detected sources are associated with galaxies on optical images. In some cases the optical associations are interacting pairs or small groups of galaxies suggesting the sample may include a significant fraction of luminous infrared galaxies. The source counts extracted from a reliable subset of the detected sources are in agreement with strongly evolving models of the starburst galaxy population., Comment: 13 pages, accepted by MNRAS. The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) has surveyed 12 square degrees of the sky at 15 and 90 microns, and subsets of this area at 6.75 and 175 microns, using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). This project was the largest single open time programme executed by ISO, taking 375 hours of data. A preliminary catalogue of more than 1000 galaxies has been produced. The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) will provide Infrared observations of 4 regions in the sky with ISO. Around 2000 Infrared sources have been detected at 7 and 15 microns (with ISOCAM), 90 and 175 microns (with ISOPHOT)) over 13 square degrees of the sky. We present $K'$-band surface photometry of a sample of 31 inclined Sa-Scd galaxies, together with additional $J$- and $H$-band data for four of them. In this first paper of a series, profiles are presented, together with global and isophotal parameters. Our profiles are compared to similar $B$, $R$ and $I$ data collected from other sources. Three galaxies exhibit previously unknown small bars in their center, while in five others, such bars may also be present. Four objects present a narrow elongated feature in their center aligned with their major axis, which could be an inward extension of the disk. A few galaxies display very thin spiral arms.
