Abstract

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sawdust for producing hydrochar was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). After optimization, the combustion behaviour and other relevant fuel properties of hydrochar that was obtained at the optimized conditions were studied. Additionally, the aqueous phase obtained at the optimized conditions was recycled as the reaction medium for producing hydrochar and the influence of the aqueous phase recycling on the hydrochar yield and properties was evaluated. The results indicated that the highest hydrochar yield of 84.23 wt.% under the predicted optimum conditions of temperature of 162.23°C, 2.51 h, feedstock loading of 10.71 wt.%, and catalyst loading of 7.99 wt.%. Furthermore, it was found that the use of recycled aqueous phase as the reaction medium led to an increase in the hydrochar yield, higher heating value (HHV), and energy yield, and difference in combustion behaviour was minor. Overall, this study filled the gap in HTC literature regarding the effect of catalyst on hydrochar production and provided a practical solution to treat the aqueous phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Protein kinase D (PKD) isoforms are protein kinase C effectors in signaling pathways regulated by diacylglycerol. Important physiological processes (including secretion, immune responses, motility, and transcription) are placed under diacylglycerol control by the distinctive substrate specificity and subcellular distribution of PKDs. Potentially, broadly co-expressed PKD polypeptides may interact to generate homo- or heteromultimeric regulatory complexes. However, the frequency, molecular basis, regulatory significance, and physiological relevance of stable PKD-PKD interactions are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that mammalian PKDs 1-3 and the prototypical Caenorhabditis elegans PKD, DKF-2A, are exclusively (homo- or hetero-) dimers in cell extracts and intact cells. We discovered and characterized a novel, highly conserved N-terminal domain, comprising 92 amino acids, which mediates dimerization of PKD1, PKD2, and PKD3 monomers. A similar domain directs DKF-2A homodimerization. Dimerization occurred independently of properties of the regulatory and kinase domains of PKDs. Disruption of PKD dimerization abrogates secretion of PAUF, a protein carried in small trans-Golgi network-derived vesicles. In addition, disruption of DKF-2A homodimerization in C. elegans intestine impaired and degraded the immune defense of the intact animal against an ingested bacterial pathogen. Finally, dimerization was indispensable for the strong, dominant negative effect of catalytically inactive PKDs. Overall, the structural integrity and function of the novel dimerization domain are essential for PKD-mediated regulation of a key aspect of cell physiology, secretion, and innate immunity in vivo.

Abstract

This study was conducted to quantify, by an approach proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the daily hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) related to exposure to particulate matter (PM 10 ) and oxidants such as ozone (O 3 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in a heavily polluted city in Iran. For the health impact assessment, in terms of COPD, the current published relative risk (RR) and baseline incidence (BI) values, suggested by the WHO, and the 1-h O 3 concentrations and daily PM 10 , NO 2 , and SO 2 concentrations were compiled. The results showed that 5.9, 4.1, 1.2, and 1.9% of the COPD daily hospitalizations in 2011 and 6.6, 1.9, 2.3, and 2.1% in 2012 were attributed to PM 10 , O 3 , SO 2 , and NO 2 concentrations exceeding 10 μg/m 3 , respectively. This study indicates that air quality and the high air pollutant levels have an effect on COPD morbidity. Air pollution is associated with visits to emergency services and hospital admissions. A lower relative risk can be achieved if some stringent control strategies for reducing air pollutants or emission precursors are implemented.
