The two-phase flow is a vital topic of thermal-hydraulic research in light-water nuclear reactors. The fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of two-phase flow impact the safety and efficiency of nuclear power plants. The two-phase flow results in various transients in the nuclear reactor: The change of the pressure drop redistributes the flow rate of the channels, and the generation of the void in the core alters the reactivity and consequently the power. The two-phase flow is among the most complex flows since the interface structure evolves and the mass/momentum/energy transfers across the interface. The two-phase flow research of the nuclear system started in the 30s and 40s of the last century, when the pioneer scientists studied the flow instability and the pressure drop. Along with the rise of commercial nuclear reactors in the 50s, the interests lay in the critical flow, the critical heat flux, and the void distribution. In the 70s, the industry shifted its interest to the blow and the flooding, which are compound flow phenomena in specific geometries of the reactor system. In the 90s, the focus was to improve the ability of the nuclear safety codes, such as developing the constitutive models and conducting benchmark experiments. Since this century, the growth of the measuring techniques has supported fundamental research, like the interface evolution and the behavior under extreme conditions. Also, the development of the computers enables the multi-dimensional study using computational fluid dynamics codes and enables the multi-physics study using the codes-coupling platform. This paper aims to understand the research trend of the two-phase flow in the nuclear system by reviewing the history, summarizing the critical problems, and presenting the status. Five phenomena, which lack knowledge and need to be investigated, are described in the current review: the two-phase flow structure, the interfacial drag, the heat transfer crisis, the interphase heat/mass transfer, and the counter-current flow limitation. Three research directions are suggested: advanced modeling, advanced measuring techniques, and cross-cutting fields. Concluding remarks, with research recommendations from the local scale to the system scale, are given to the two-phase flow in the nuclear system.

Mica is a kind of important rock-forming mineral in the lithosphere of Earth, which can be a superior tool used to trace the origin and late evolution of rock. The Jian forsterite jade (a kind of geological skarn) is an emerging kind of gemstone in China with a beautiful color and luster, discovered in Ji'an County, Jilin Province, Northeast China. It is mainly composed of rare Mg-rich forsterite (Mg# (Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) up to 99), serpentine and brucite. The source of hydrothermal fluid triggering the late metamorphism (the serpentinization of forsterite) of forsterite jade deposits remains unclear. We report a series of phlogopites with a regular range of mineral compositions in the forsterite jade deposit. Micrographs show that the phlogopites are associated with forsterite and coexist with serpentine in forsterite jade, tourmaline and tremolite in the contact zone, and plagioclase in pegmatite, and the related replacement of phlogopite seems to have not occurred. The phlogopites that occurred as single grains or veinlets in forsterite jade named type I are characterized by high XMg, ranging from ~0.98 to ~0.95, and the phlogopites that occurred in the contact zone of forsterite jade and pegmatite named type II are rich in Fe, with a range of XMg from ~0.82 to ~0.66. Additionally, the type II phlogopites are also rich in Ti, Mn, Cl, Li, Rb, Zn, V, Co, Nb and Ta but poor in Na, Sr and F compared to the type I phlogopite. Petrological and mineralogical characteristics and geochemical compositions suggest that the phlogopites are crystallized from the corresponding fluid component by hydrothermal metasomatism. The abundant Mg of the fluid phase is produced during the serpentinization of forsterite, triggered by pegmatitic hydrothermal fluid, and other main materials like K, Al, Si and H2O are provided by the intrusive pegmatite. With the occurrence of and regular compositional variation in phlogopites in the forsterite jade deposit, we suppose that the hydrothermal fluid triggering the serpentinization of the Jian forsterite jade is produced by the intrusive pegmatite. BACKGROUND The Marange diamond deposit in Zimbabwe is characterized by producing mixed-habit (octahedral and cuboid) diamonds. Graphite inclusions in these diamonds only exist in cuboid sectors. The morphological and distributional characteristics of graphite inclusions and the abnormal birefringence and strain characteristics of diamonds can reflect the geological process experienced by diamonds from the beginning of crystallization to being transported to the Earth's surface. Therefore, the study of diamonds and graphite inclusions in Zimbabwe can provide comparative data for diamonds from other deposits. Besides, due to the peculiarity of growth habits, detailed analysis would be of great value to help understand the behavioral differences of diamonds with different growth habits in geological processes. OBJECTIVES To determine if graphite inclusions in Zimbabwean diamonds are syngenetic or epigenetic, and to reveal the relationship between graphite inclusions and the infrared absorption spectrum, Raman scattering spectrum as well as birefringence and strain characteristics of diamonds. METHODS The growth structure and growth sectors of Zimbabwean diamonds were observed by DiamondViewTM image system. The morphological and distributional characteristics of graphite inclusions and abnormal birefringence in diamonds were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and polarized light microscopy. Analysis of distribution and relative concentration of impurity elements in different growth sectors was conducted by infrared spectroscopy. Strain characteristics of diamonds in different growth sectors were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and projection diagram of corresponding results. RESULTS Graphite inclusions in cuboid sectors of Zimbabwean diamonds were syngenetic-epigenetic inclusions located in directional elliptical cracks. According to infrared spectra of different growth sectors, cuboid sectors showed stronger infrared absorption related to elemental hydrogen, while octahedral sectors showed stronger absorption related to elemental nitrogen. This enrichment of different impurity elements leading to abnormal birefringence was mainly related to cracks and different growth sectors in diamond. The Raman shift of LO=TO band in octahedral sectors was 1332.05-1332.20cm-1, the FWHM was 4.21-4.37cm-1, which corresponded to stress of 0.06-0.27GPa. The Raman shift of LO=TO band in cuboid sectors was 1331.93-1332.47cm-1, the FWHM was 3.67-4.08cm-1, which corresponded to stress of 0.01-0.64GPa. In general, the residual stress and strain were greater in cuboid sectors. CONCLUSIONS The determination of the orientation of graphite inclusions in mixed-habit diamonds in Zimbabwe, provides new evidence to prove their syngenetic-epigenetic nature, and reveal the difference in the strain characteristics of diamonds in the two growth regions. This research is helpful for understanding the formation environment of diamonds in Zimbabwe and of different diamonds. The differences in physicochemical properties are of great significance.

Tsallis entropy has been widely used in image thresholding because of its non-extensive properties. The non-extensive parameter q contained in this entropy plays an important role in various adaptive algorithms and has been successfully applied in bi-level image thresholding. In this paper, the relationships between parameter q and pixels' long-range correlations have been further studied within multi-threshold image segmentation. It is found that the pixels' correlations are remarkable and stable for images generated by a known physical principle, such as infrared images, medical CT images, and color satellite remote sensing images. The corresponding non-extensive parameter q can be evaluated by using the self-adaptive Tsallis entropy algorithm. The results of this algorithm are compared with those of the Shannon entropy algorithm and the original Tsallis entropy algorithm in terms of quantitative image quality evaluation metrics PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and SSIM (Structural Similarity). Furthermore, we observed that for image series with the same background, the q values determined by the adaptive algorithm are consistently kept in a narrow range. Therefore, similar or identical scenes during imaging would produce similar strength of long-range correlations, which provides potential applications for unsupervised image processing. This study measured the infrared spectra of secondary minerals in the oxidation zones of three types of copper ores: dioptase, malachite, and azurite, and assigned the peak positions of OH stretching vibrations and the origins of OH combination vibrations. Dioptase contains three types of water molecules with different orientations within its ring channels, which exhibit six kinds of OH stretching vibrations in the 3000–3600 cm−1 range; the bond length range is 2.652 to 2.887 Å. Among them, the 3443 cm−1 band shows strong near-infrared activity and combines with Si–O vibrations or OH bending vibrations in the structure, resulting in five combination vibration peaks in the 4000–5000 cm−1 range. Malachite contains two inequivalent hydroxyls in its structure, leading to two OH stretching vibrations in the high-frequency region located at 3314 and 3402 cm−1, respectively. Azurite contains only one type of hydroxyl, and thus only one characteristic OH stretching vibration is present at 3424 cm−1. The OH stretching vibrations of malachite and azurite mainly combine with [CO3]2− vibrations or OH bending vibrations, leading to six and five combination peaks in the OH combination vibration region, respectively. By analyzing the combination of peak positions at 4341 cm−1 in the near-infrared spectrum, the merged OH bending vibration at 921 cm−1 in azurite was discovered. Aims: To investigate the roles of neurotrophic factors on cognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) carrying Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4. Methods: Totals of 173 patients with AD were divided into APOE ε4 carrier and non‐carrier groups, and their demographics, cognition, and neurotrophic factors in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were compared. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess correlations among APOE ε4, neurotrophic factors and cognition. Mediation analyses were conducted to assess the sequential associations among APOE ε4, nerve growth factor (NGF), and cognition. Results: Global cognition and multiple domains were impaired in the APOE ε4 carrier group (all p < 0.05). NGF level in the APOE ε4 carrier group was lower than that in the non‐carrier group (p = 0.016). NGF level showed significant correlations with both global and multiple domains cognitions. Specifically, NGF mediated the association between APOE ε4 and Animal Fluency Test score (β, −0.45; 95% CI [−0.96, −0.07]; p < 0.001) and Trail Making Test‐A (time) (β, 0.15; 95% CI [0.01, 0.33]; p < 0.001). Conclusion: APOE ε4 is associated with cognitive impairment, and those carrying APOE ε4 have decreased NGF level in CSF. Declined NGF level is correlated with compromised cognition. Deep learning has increasingly been used to identify minerals. However, deep learning can only be used to identify minerals within the distribution of the training set, while any mineral outside the spectrum of the training set is inevitably categorized erroneously within a predetermined class from the training set. To solve this problem, this study introduces the approach that combines a One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) with the ResNet architecture for out-of-distribution mineral detection. Initially, ResNet undergoes training using a training set comprising well-defined minerals. Subsequently, the first two layers obtained from the trained ResNet are employed to extract the discriminative features of the mineral under consideration. These extracted mineral features then become the input for OCSVM. When OCSVM discerns the mineral in the training set's distribution, it triggers the subsequent layers within the trained ResNet, facilitating the accurate classification of the mineral into one of the predefined categories encompassing the known minerals. In the event that OCSVM identifies a mineral outside of the training set's distribution, it is categorized as an unclassified or 'unknown' mineral. Empirical results substantiate the method's capability to identify out-of-distribution minerals while concurrently maintaining a commendably high accuracy rate for the classification of the 36 in-distribution minerals. Aims: This study aimed to comprehensively explore the nutrition and gait of AD patients at different stages and the relationship between them. Methods: A total of 85 AD patients were consecutively enrolled in this cross‐sectional study and divided into the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD (AD‐MCI) and the dementia due to AD (AD‐D) groups. Demographic information, nutritional status, and gait performance were compared between the two groups, and the correlation between nutritional status and gait performance was subsequently analyzed by Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses. Results: The AD‐D group had lower scores on Mini‐Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and MNAm scales, lower levels of urea nitrogen, folic acid, and vitamin B12 in blood, and higher homocysteine level than those in the AD‐MCI group (all p < 0.05). The AD‐D group had slower step speed, shorter step length, and shorter stride length than those in the AD‐MCI group (all p < 0.05). AD patients with decreased scores of MNA and MNAm scales, and declined levels of urea nitrogen and vitamin B12 in blood had reduced gait speed and gait cadence, and prolonged step length time and stride length time, whereas homocysteine showed the almost opposite results (all p < 0.05). In the AD‐MCI group, the score of scale was negatively correlated with the coefficient of variation (CV) of stride length, and the folic acid level was negatively correlated with the CV of stride length and cadence (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: AD patients at the dementia stage had worse nutritional status and gait performance than those at the MCI stage, which was associated with worse global cognition and activities of daily living. Poorer nutritional status was associated with higher gait variability in patients at the MCI stage and with poorer gait performance in patients at the dementia stage. Early identification and intervention of patients with nutritional risk or malnutrition may improve gait performance, thus reducing the risk of falling and cognitive decline, as well as the mortality. This article reports on the recent mining and production status of ruby in Longido, Tanzania. Faceted-grade rubies and their matrix from Longido Area, Tanzania, were investigated by standard gemological testing, including FTIR, UV-VIS, Raman spectra, and LA-ICP-MS. Microscopic observations revealed dense needle-like and triangular inclusions, distinct growth lines, and color banding as typical inclusions. In agreement with the Raman results, the transmission FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of aluminum hydroxide. The Raman spectra identified associated minerals and inclusions, including zoisite, parasites, feldspar within the matrix, rutile, and diaspore in the ruby host. The chemistry analysis revealed a high amount of Cr and relatively low iron as a good indicator of geographic origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
