Abstract

This article studies the possibility of controlling the surge impedance of the electric motor in motor drives. The existing solution to suppress (or eliminate) the reflected wave impact on the motor insulation run by a Si-IGBT or SiC-MOSFET-based drive is to use either a sinewave filter or dv/dt filter. The alternative solution suggested in this article is to implement a high-bandwidth electronic circuit at the end of the cable or at the motor terminals to match the surge impedance of the cable and motor. The high-frequency voltage ringing due to the reflected waves in motor drives is around 1 MHz, depending on the cable parameters and the length of the cable. In the proposed method, the electronic circuit can quickly detect the dv/dt rise and fall edges and adjust the electronic circuit equivalent impedance when pulses arrive the motor terminals. Thus, the cable and motor surge impedances can be matched over a short time to prevent reflected waves. As a result, the leakage currents passing through the ball bearing and overvoltage stress on the motor insulation can be suppressed significantly.

Abstract

As robots are increasingly used in remote, safety-critical, and hazardous applications, the reliability of robots is becoming more important than ever before. Robotic arm joint motor-drive systems are vulnerable to hardware failures due to harsh operating environment in many scenarios, which may yield various joint failures and result in significant downtime costs. Targeting the most common robotic joint brushless DC (BLDC) motor-drive systems, this paper proposes a robust online diagnostic method for semiconductor faults for BLDC motor drives. The proposed fault diagnostic technique is based on the stator current signature analysis. Specifically, this paper investigates the performance of the BLDC joint motors under open-circuit faults of the inverter switches using finite element co-simulation tools. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is not only capable of detecting any open-circuit faults but also identifying faulty switches based on a knowledge table by considering various fault conditions. The robustness of the proposed technique was verified through extensive simulations under different speed and load conditions. Moreover, simulations have been carried out on a Kinova Gen-3 robot arm to verify the theoretical findings, highlighting the impacts of locked joints on the robot's end-effector locations. 8. A CSI-Fed PMSM Drive System With Single-Stage Operation for Extended Constant-Torque Range

Abstract

Aiming at extending the constant-torque region, a high-performance single-stage control strategy is proposed for the current-source inverter (CSI) fed permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system in this article. Different from traditional CSI-fed motor drives, both the dc-link current and the motor speed are regulated by the CSI for single-stage operation. A novel cascaded closed-loop control structure is proposed, where the speed controller and the dc-link current controller are designed as the outer and inner loops, respectively. The input dc voltage can be boosted for higher terminal voltages of PMSM, and the constant-torque operation range is extended and the efficiency is improved for the CSI-fed drive due to the avoidance of flux-weakening operation. Moreover, the cascaded closed-loop current controller is developed, which can suppress the LC resonance excited by low-order current harmonics in the single-stage operation. To achieve the smooth transition between the two-stage operation in the low-speed region and the single-stage operation in the high-speed region, a hysteresis comparator-based switching strategy is proposed. Experiments have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the boost feature of CSI and the proposed control scheme.

Abstract

To improve the trajectory tracking performance of planar motors against disturbances, model predictive position control (MPPC) methods using the non‐linear disturbance observer (NDO) are proposed in this study. Based on the single‐axis dynamic model with disturbances, a single‐axis NDO is designed using an extended state observer approach. The designed NDO is expressed as a third‐order non‐linear state‐space equation in which the position error, velocity error, and lumped disturbance in the single axis are taken as the state variables. Two MPPC methods are developed based on the NDO. In the first MPPC, the disturbance is embedded into the prediction model using the NDO, and a controller is designed to minimise a quadratic cost function, which is established by applying the prediction model with disturbance. The output of the controller is the control action. In the second MPPC, a controller is used to minimise the quadratic cost function, which is built by employing the prediction model without disturbance. The sum of the output of the controller and the compensated disturbance estimated by the NDO is the control action. The comparative experiment is performed on a planar motor system self‐developed in the laboratory. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified via the experimental results. 50. Effect of Surface Morphology on the Response Speed of Moisture Sensors

Abstract

Relative humidity sensors are used for high-humidity measurement and moisture sensor or dew point sensors are used for low-humidity measurement (<1 ppmv). We fabricated moisture sensors using α-Al2O3films as porous dielectric materials deposited by anodic spark deposition. In this study, a variety number of small pores has been studied to investigate the response speed of moisture sensors. Three different surface morphologies have been studied using scanning electron microscopy. One sample has the maximum number of small pores, one sample has the medium number of small pores, and the last sample has the minimum number of small pores. Small pores are defined as pore size ranging from 40 nm to 200 nm. We found that the sensor made as porous material with the maximum number of small pores has the fastest response speed, and that from the minimum number of small pores has the slowest response speed either from high humidity to low humidity or from low humidity to high humidity.
