Abstract

Blue shark (Prionace glauca) is amongst the most abundant shark species in international trade, however this highly migratory species has little effective management and the need for spatio-temporal strategies increases, possibly involving the most vulnerable stage or sex classes. We combined 265,595 blue shark observations (capture or satellite tag) with environmental data to present the first global-scale analysis of species’ habitat preferences for five size and sex classes (small juveniles, large juvenile males and females, adult males and females). We leveraged the understanding of blue shark biotic environmental associations to develop two indicators of foraging location: productivity fronts in mesotrophic areas and mesopelagic micronekton in oligotrophic environments. Temperature (at surface and mixed layer depth plus 100 m) and sea surface height anomaly were used to exclude unsuitable abiotic environments. To capture the horizontal and vertical extent of thermal habitat for the blue shark, we defined the temperature niche relative to both sea surface temperature (SST) and the temperature 100 m below the mixed layer depth (Tmld+100). We show that the lifetime foraging niche incorporates highly diverse biotic and abiotic conditions: the blue shark tends to shift from mesotrophic and temperate surface waters during juvenile stages to more oligotrophic and warm surface waters for adults. However, low productivity limits all classes of blue shark habitat in the tropical western North Atlantic, and both low productivity and warm temperatures limit habitat in most of the equatorial Indian Ocean (except for the adult males) and tropical eastern Pacific. Large females tend to have greater habitat overlap with small juveniles than large males, more defined by temperature than productivity preferences. Abstract

Marine traffic is increasing globally yet collisions with endangered megafauna such as whales, sea turtles, and planktivorous sharks go largely undetected or unreported. Collisions leading to mortality can have population-level consequences for endangered species. Hence, identifying simultaneous space use of megafauna and shipping throughout ranges may reveal as-yet-unknown spatial targets requiring conservation. However, global studies tracking megafauna and shipping occurrences are lacking. Here we combine satellite-tracked movements of the whale shark, Rhincodon typus, and vessel activity to show that 92% of sharks’ horizontal space use and nearly 50% of vertical space use overlap with persistent large vessel (>300 gross tons) traffic. Collision-risk estimates correlated with reported whale shark mortality from ship strikes, indicating higher mortality in areas with greatest overlap. Hotspots of potential collision risk were evident in all major oceans, predominantly from overlap with cargo and tanker vessels, and were concentrated in gulf regions, where dense traffic co-occurred with seasonal shark movements. Nearly a third of whale shark hotspots overlapped with the highest collision-risk areas, with the last known locations of tracked sharks coinciding with busier shipping routes more often than expected. Depth-recording tags provided evidence for sinking, likely dead, whale sharks, suggesting substantial “cryptic” lethal ship strikes are possible, which could explain why whale shark population declines continue despite international protection and low fishing-induced mortality. Mitigation measures to reduce ship-strike risk should be considered to conserve this species and other ocean giants that are likely experiencing similar impacts from growing global vessel traffic., [Significance] Global vessel traffic is increasing alongside world economic growth. The potential for rising lethal ship strikes on endangered species of marine megafauna, such as the plankton-feeding whale shark, remains poorly understood since areas of highest overlap are seldom determined across an entire species range. Here we show how satellite tracking whale sharks and large vessel movements globally provides a means to localize high-overlap areas and to determine how collision risk changes in time. Our results point to potential high levels of undetected or unreported ship strikes, which may explain why whale shark populations continue to decline despite protection and low fishing-induced mortality. Collision mitigations in high-collision-risk areas appear necessary to help conserve this iconic species.

Abstract

This paper provides an update of the study on post-release mortality of the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus developed within the ICCAT Shark Research and Data Collection Program (SRDCP). Up to date, 43 tags (14 sPATs and 29 miniPATs) have been deployed by observers on Brazilian, Portuguese, Spanish, Uruguayan, and US vessels in the temperate NE and NW, Equatorial and SW Atlantic. Data from 35 out of 43 tagged specimens could be used to obtain preliminary information regarding post-release mortality, resulting in a total of 8 mortality and 27 survival events. This study was carried out as part of a cooperative work conducted by the ICCAT Shark species group integrated in the ICCAT Shark Research and Data Collection Program (SRDCP). The authors are grateful to all fishery observers and longline skippers from the Nations involved in this study. Abstract

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. Space-use hotspots of commercially valuable sharks and of internationally protected species had the highest overlap with longlines (up to 76% and 64%, respectively), and were also associated with significant increases in fishing effort. We conclude that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from current levels of fishing effort in marine areas beyond national jurisdictions (the high seas). Our results demonstrate an urgent need for conservation and management measures at high-seas hotspots of shark space use, and highlight the potential of simultaneous satellite surveillance of megafauna and fishers as a tool for near-real-time, dynamic management.

Abstract

Post-copulatory sexual selection, and sperm competition in particular, is a powerful selective force shaping the evolution of sperm morphology. Although mounting evidence suggests that post-copulatory sexual selection influences the evolution of sperm morphology among species, recent evidence also suggests that sperm competition influences variation in sperm morphology at the intraspecific level. However, contradictory empirical results and limited taxonomic scope have led to difficulty in assessing the generality of sperm morphological responses to variation in the strength of sperm competition. Here, we use phylogenetically controlled analyses to explore the effects of sperm competition on sperm morphology and variance in sharks, a basal vertebrate group characterized by wide variation in rates of multiple mating by females, and consequently sperm competition risk. Our analyses reveal that shark species experiencing greater levels of sperm competition produce sperm with longer flagella and that sperm flagellum length is less variable in species under higher sperm competition risk. In contrast, neither the length of the sperm head and midpiece nor variation in sperm head and midpiece length was associated with sperm competition risk. Our findings demonstrate that selection influences both the inter- and intraspecific variation in sperm morphology and suggest that the flagellum is an important target of sexual selection in sharks. These findings provide important insight into patterns of selection on the ejaculate in a basal vertebrate lineage.

Abstract

As part of an ongoing cooperative program for fisheries and biological data collection within the ICCAT Sharks Working Group, information collected by fishery observers and scientific projects from several fishing nations in the Atlantic were analyzed. Datasets included information on geographic location, size and sex. A total of 42,979 shortfin mako records collected between 1989 and 2017 were compiled. Sizes considered ranged between 60 and 353 cm FL (fork length). Of those, sex information was available for 24,316 specimens. Considerable variability was observed in the size distribution by region and season, with larger sizes tending to occur in equatorial and tropical regions and smaller sizes in higher latitudes. Variability between coastal and more oceanic waters is also likely. Most fleets showed unimodal distributions, but in some cases there were bimodal patterns. The distributional patterns presented in this study provide an advance in the understanding of shortfin mako size distribution in the Atlantic, and can be used in the next update of the ICCAT shortfin mako stock assessment. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

29. A green strategy for shark attack mitigation off Recife, Brazil

Abstract

Shark attacks on humans have prompted the implementation of shark control programs aiming at reducing local populations of potentially aggressive species using mostly gillnets. However, shark meshing produces ecological disturbances by inflicting severe mortality not only to sharks but also to several harmless, frequently endangered taxa, including cetaceans, sirenians and chelonids. A different methodological approach to mitigate shark peril off Recife combines bottom longlining and drumlines with comparably better results. This region has been experiencing an abnormally high shark attack rate since 1992, but the protective fishing strategy was developed in 2004 only. Unlike traditional shark control programs, the Shark Monitoring Program of Recife (SMPR) aims at removing dangerous sharks not from their populations but from the hazardous area instead, which is achieved by capturing, transporting and releasing sharks offshore. During 8 years, the SMPR caught fish and turtles only and showed high selectivity for sharks compared with shark meshing. Target species comprised carcharhinids and sphyrnids and accounted for 7% of total catch. The fishing mortality of abundant taxa was generally low except for Carcharhinus acronotus and Gymnothorax spp., and protected species had similar to 100% survival. The shark attack rate diminished about 97% while fishing operations were being conducted (W = 1108.5, P < 0.001), whereas no-fishing periods and the period prior to the implementation of the SMPR had similar shark attack rates. Overall, the SMPR seems to be less detrimental than shark meshing strategies while clearly contributing for enhancing bather safety; thus, it may provide an effective, ecologically balanced tool for assisting in shark attack mitigation. Abstract

The article reports on the shark attack outbreak off Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. It is stated that an unprecedented series of shark attacks on humans off Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil within a 14-year period from September 1992 to September 2006 resulted in 47 incidents which includes 17 fatalities. A suite of biotic and nonbiotic factors were tested to determine commonality in the attacks. It is said that surfers and body boarders were the group most affected. It is further said that the attacks occurred predominantly in shallow water. It is inferred that the construction and growth of the Suape Port has resulted in major environmental degradation and is likely to have played a role in the recent onset of shark attacks.

Abstract

Several studies conducted in Brazilian oceanic islands have generated many results of great significance for the understanding of these ecosystems. However, most of these studies have been restricted to shallow waters, not going beyond 200 m depth. In this work, seven exploratory deep-water fishing surveys were carried out with bottom traps at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, between 2012 and 2014, at depths ranging from 300 to 700 m. During these surveys the presence of a deep-sea crab, identified as Chaceon gordonae was recorded, with 458 specimens being caught. Of the sampled specimens, 252 were males and 206 were females. The carapace length (CL) of sampled crabs measured, on the average, 110.81 ± 14.52 mm for males and 102.00 ± 16.55 mm for females. In general, the β1 parameter of the length-weight relationship indicates a positive allometric growth. A comparison of linear regression between the carapace length and right chela length and width for males suggested a morphological maturity of 108.90 and 110.10 mm CL, respectively, whereas the regression between carapace length and abdomen width in females indicated a size at morphological maturity of 84.00 mm CL. Abstract

CNPq A raia-roxa, Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte, 1832), é a única espécie da família Dasyatidae no ambiente pelágico. O objetivo geral do presente trabalho consistiu em agregar informações sobre a espécie, principalmente no que se refere a sua pesca, seu hábito alimentar, aspectos reprodutivos, distribuição, abundância relativa e preferências de uso do habitat no Oceano Atlântico Ocidental. Para determinar seu hábito alimentar, os estômagos de 106 espécimes foram analisados (69 machos, 26 fêmeas e 11 sem informação de sexo). A importância de cada item alimentar na dieta foi obtida pelo Índice de Importância Relativa (IIR). Foram observados teleósteos, cefalópodes, crustáceos e outras presas que incluíam tunicados, pterópodes e heterópodas. As observações sugerem que a P. violacea altera seus itens alimentares de acordo com sua localização geográfica e também mostra como a espécie, apesar de pertencer à família Dasyatidae, é adaptada ao ambiente pelágico. Os hábitos reprodutivos desta espécie são pouco conhecidos. Estudamos a sua biologia reprodutiva, examinando um total de 480 espécimes, 188 fêmeas (39,2%) e 292 machos (60,8%), e proporção sexual de 1,5 macho: 1 fêmea, capturados na pesca de espinhel comercial entre outubro de 2005 e março de 2010. Tamanhos, medidos pela largura do disco (LD), variaram de 28,0-66,0 cm para fêmeas e de 34,0-59,6cm para os machos. Fêmeas foram classificadas como juvenil (n = 42; 22,7%); em maturação (n = 67; 36,2%); pré-ovulatória (n = 28; 15,1%); prenhe estágio 1 (n = 17; 9,2%); prenhe estágio 2 (n = 13; 7,0%); prenhe estágio 3 (n = 2; 1,1%); pós-parto (n = 6; 3,2%) e repouso (n = 10; 5,4%). Fêmeas grávidas em estágios 1-3 (n =32, 17,3%) variaram entre 48,0-60,0cm LD. O tamanho da primeira maturação sexual foi estimado em 50,0cm LD para fêmeas e 42,0cm CD para os machos. A fecundidade do ovário, considerando-se apenas folículos maiores do que> 0,5 cm de diâmetro, variou de 1-17 folículos/fêmea e a fecundidade uterina de embriões em fêmeas prenhes em estágios 2 e 3 variou 1-5 embriões/fêmea. A proporção sexual entre os embriões foi igual (0,9 machos: 1 fêmea) e o tamanho ao nascer foi próximo de 19,0cm LD. A sua distribuição e abundancia relativa foram determinados analisando os dados de captura e esforço de 6.886 lances de espinhel, distribuídos em uma ampla área do Atlântico Ocidental, variando de 15°N e 40°S de latitude e a partir de 010°E a 050°W de longitude, o esforço de pesca atingiu o máximo de 1.200.000 anzóis e a área com a maior concentração de esforço foi localizado entre 5°N-25°S de latitude e 020°-040°W de longitude. A distribuição espacial do esforço de pesca por trimestre mostrou semelhança no primeiro e segundo trimestres, quando comparado com o terceiro e quarto e mostraram duas áreas distintas, com maior esforço, uma localizada entre 5°N-5°S e 025°-040°W e a segunda entre 10°-25°S e 025°-040°W. A distribuição espacial da CPUE mostrou a ocorrência de duas áreas com altos índices de captura (7,8-18,0 raias/1000 anzóis), um mais ao norte, variando de 10°N-10°S a 030°-045°W e outra mais para o sudeste, variando de 20°-35°S a 040°-045°W. Os valores mais baixos de CPUE foram observados entre 10°-20°S e correspondente a 0,8-1,6 raias/1000 anzóis. A distribuição espacial da CPUE por trimestre mostrou capturas elevadas ocorrendo no primeiro (10°N-00° a 030°-045°W), terceiro (25°-35°S a 040°-045°W) e quarto (05°-10°S a 030°-035°W) trimestres. Na distribuição espacial de machos e fêmeas, nenhuma evidência foi encontrada de uma segregação espacial por sexo, os machos não apresentaram padrão de segregação por estágio de maturidade sexual, as fêmeas apresentaram um leve padrão de segregação dos estádios de maturação sexual. Os dados aqui apresentados mostram que os espécimes de P. violacea capturados no sudoeste do Atlântico equatorial são compostos em sua maioria (98,8% machos e as fêmeas 79,0%) de indivíduos adultos. No presente estudo, para observações do uso do habitat, foi utilizada uma marca eletrônica, Pop-up Archival Tag (PAT). Uma fêmea de raia-roxa, medindo 56,5cm e 48,0cm de largura (LD) e comprimento (CD) de disco respectivamente, capturada em 30 de abril de 2010 foi marcada com uma MiniPAT. O espécime não mostrou nenhum padrão definido de movimento horizontal, movendo-se em muitas direções diferentes em uma área entre 03°-09°N de latitude e 036°-040°W de longitude. Durante os 60 dias com a marca, a raia-roxa moveu-se cerca de 535 km, com um deslocamento diária estimado de 8,92 km. A raia-roxa gastou apenas 9,8% do tempo em águas rasas entre 0- 50m de profundidade, com temperaturas entre 23,4 e 28,7°C. Em águas abaixo de 50m, passou 90,2% do tempo, desses, 70% foram em águas abaixo de 75m de profundidade, em temperaturas variando entre 13,0 e 24,5°C. Além disso, durante a maior parte do monitoramento (53%), o espécime ficou em águas entre 100- 150m de profundidade, com. A temperatura mínima experimentada pela raia-roxa foi de 10,4°C, correspondendo a 387,5 e 428,0m de profundidades, a última coincidindo com a atividade de mergulho mais marcante da raia-roxa. As diferenças entre o dia e a noite e preferências de profundidade pode indicar padrão de movimento circadiano, ou seja, migram diariamente, geralmente até águas rasas durante a noite e águas profundas durante o dia.

Abstract

Climate change is shifting animal distributions. However, the extent to which future global habitats of threatened marine megafauna will overlap existing human threats remains unresolved. Here we use global climate models and habitat suitability estimated from long-term satellite-tracking data of the world's largest fish, the whale shark, to show that redistributions of present-day habitats are projected to increase the species' co-occurrence with global shipping. Our model projects core habitat area losses of >50% within some national waters by 2100, with geographic shifts of over 1,000 km (∼12 km yr -1 ). Greater habitat suitability is predicted in current range-edge areas, increasing the co-occurrence of sharks with large ships. This future increase was ∼15,000 times greater under high emissions compared with a sustainable development scenario. Abstract

An abnormally high shark attack rate verified off Recife could be related to migratory behavior of tiger sharks. This situation started after the construction of the Suape port to the south of Recife. A previous study suggested that attacking sharks could be following northward currents and that they were being attracted shoreward by approaching vessels. In this scenario, such northward movement pattern could imply a higher probability of sharks accessing the littoral area of Recife after leaving Suape. Pop-up satellite archival tags were deployed on five tiger sharks caught off Recife to assess their movement patterns off northeastern Brazil. All tags transmitted from northward latitudes after 7-74 days of freedom. The shorter, soak distance between deployment and pop-up locations ranged between 33-209 km and implied minimum average speeds of 0.02-0.98 km.h-1. Both pop-up locations and depth data suggest that tiger shark movements were conducted mostly over the continental shelf. The smaller sharks moved to deeper waters within 24 hours after releasing, but they assumed a shallower (< 50 m) vertical distribution for most of the monitoring period. While presenting the first data on tiger shark movements in the South Atlantic, this study also adds new information for the reasoning of the high shark attack rate verified in this region.
