8. Reductive hydrothermal conversion of uranyl oxalates into UO2+x monitored by in situ XANES analyses.

Abstract

Hydrothermal conversion of actinide oxalates has recently gained attention as an innovative fabrication route for nuclear fuels but has remained mainly limited to tetra- or tri-valent cations. We report herein the reductive conversion of mixtures of uranyl and oxalate ions into UO2+x oxides under mild hydrothermal conditions (T = 250 °C). A multi-parametric study first led to specifying the optimal conditions in terms of pH, oxalate/U ratio and duration to provide a quantitative precipitation of uranium in the hyper-stoichiometric dioxide form with pH = 0.8; R = noxalate/nU = 3, and t = 72 hours. Particularly, pH was evidenced as a key parameter, with 3 different compounds obtained over a range of only 0.4 units. The mechanism leading to the formation of UO2+x was then investigated thanks to an in situ XANES study. Analysis of the supernatant showed that U(VI) was quickly reduced into U(IV) thanks to the presence of oxalates and/or their decomposition products in solution, following first-order kinetics. Tetravalent uranium was then hydrolysed, leading to the precipitation of UO2+x as the only crystalline phase. This study thus demonstrates that the hydrothermal conversion of actinide oxalates into oxides is an extremely versatile tool that can be implemented in a large variety of chemical systems, particularly in terms of the oxidation state of the cations initially present in solution. Abstract

Complex cementitious matrices undergo weathering with environmental exchange and can release metallic pollutants during alteration. The molecular mechanisms responsible for metal release are difficult to identify, though this is necessary if such processes are to be controlled. The present study determines and models the molecular mechanisms of Pb release during Portland cement leaching. As Pb release is strongly related to its speciation (i.e. atomic environment and the nature of bearing phases), the first objective of the present study was to investigate the evolution of Pb retention sites together with the evolution of the cement mineralogy during leaching. Complementary and efficient investigation tools were used, namely X-ray diffraction, micro-X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption fine structures. The second objective was to reproduce our results with a reactive transport code (CHESS/HYTEC) in order to test the proposed speciation model of Pb. Combined results indicate that in both the unaltered core and the altered layer of the leached cement, Pb(II) would be retained through C-S-H 'nano-structure', probably linked to a Q1 or Q2P silicate tetrahedra. Moreover in the altered layer, the presence of Fe atoms in the atomic environment of Pb is highly probable. Unfortunately little is known about Fe phases in cement, which makes the interpretation difficult. Can Fe- substituted hydrogranet (C3AH6) be responsible for Pb retention? Modelling results were consistent with Pb retention through C-S-H in layers and also in an additional, possibly Fe-containing, Pb-retention phase in the altered layer.

Abstract

The structural environment of substitutional Cr3+ ion in a natural pyrope Mg3Al2Si3O12 has been investigated by Cr K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) coupled with first-principles computations. The Cr-O distance is close to that in knorringite Mg3Cr2Si3O12, indicating a full relaxation of the first neighbors. The local C3i symmetry of the octahedral Y site is retained during Cr-Al substitution. The second and third shells of neighbors (Mg and Si) relax only partially. Site relaxation is accommodated by strain-induced bond buckling, with angular tilts of the Si-centered tetrahedra around the Cr-centered octahedron, and by a radial deformation of the Mg-centered dodecahedra.

24. XANES determination of chromium oxidation states in glasses: comparison with optical absorption spectroscopy

Abstract

The oxidation state of chromium in glasses melted in an air atmosphere with and without refining agents was investigated by Cr K-edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) and optical absorption spectroscopy. A good agreement in the relative proportion of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) is obtained between both methods. We show that the chemical dependence of the absorption coefficient of Cr(III) is less important in XANES than in optical absorption spectroscopy. The comparison of glasses melted under different conditions provides an indirect assessment of the molar extinction coefficient of Cr(VI) in glasses.

Here, we show that the relaxation is accomodated by strain-induced bond buckling, with angular tilts of the Mg-centred tetrahedra around the Cr-centred octahedron. Abstract

In this paper, small-angle X-ray scattering measurements are used to determine the different compressibility contributions, as well as the isothermal compressibility, in thermal equilibrium in silica glasses having different thermal histories. Using two different methods of analysis, in the supercooled liquid and in the glassy state, we obtain respectively the temperature and fictive temperature dependences of the isotheraml compressibility. The values obtained in the glass and supercooled liquid states are very close to each other. They agree with previous determinations of the literature. The compressibility in the glass state slightly decreases with increasing fictive temperature. The relaxational part of the compressibility is also calculated and compared to previous determinations. We discussed the small differences between the different determinations.

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the x-ray scattering in the region below the first sharp diffraction peak was measured for silica glasses with low and high OH content (GE-124 and Corning 7980). Data were obtained upon scanning the temperature at 10, 40 and 80 K/min between 400 K and 1820 K. The measurements resolve, for the first time, the hysteresis between heating and cooling through the glass transition for silica glass, and the data have a better signal to noise ratio than previous light scattering and differential thermal analysis data. For the glass with the higher hydroxyl concentration the glass transition is broader and at a lower temperature. Fits of the data to the Adam-Gibbs-Fulcher equation provide updated kinetic parameters for this very strong glass. Metal encapsulation in zeolitic materials through one‐pot hydrothermal synthesis (HTS) is an attractive technique to prepare zeolites with a high metal dispersion. Due to its simplicity and the excellent catalytic performance observed for several catalytic systems, this method has gained a great deal of attention over the last few years. While most studies apply synthetic methods involving different organic ligands to stabilize the metal under synthesis conditions, here we report the use of metallosiloxanes as an alternative metal precursor. Metallosiloxanes can be synthesized from simple and cost‐affordable chemicals and, when used in combination with zeolite building blocks under standard synthesis conditions, lead to quantitative metal loading and high dispersion. Thanks to the structural analogy of siloxane with TEOS, the synthesis gel stabilizes by forming siloxane bridges that prevent metal precipitation and clustering. When focusing on Fe‐encapsulation, we demonstrate that Fe‐MFI zeolites obtained by this method exhibit high catalytic activity in the NH3‐mediated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx along with a good H2O/SO2 tolerance. Abstract

The objective of this work is to experimentally investigate the effect of the oxygen potential on the fuel and FP chemical behaviour in conditions representative of a severe accident. More specifically, the speciation of Cs, Mo and Ba is investigated. These three highly reactive FP are among the most abundant elements produced through 235U and 239Pu thermal fission and may have a significant impact on human health and environmental contamination in case of a light water reactor severe accident. This work has set out to contribute to the following three fields: providing experimental data on Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) MOX fuel behaviour submitted to severe accident conditions and related FP speciation; going further in the understanding of FP speciation mechanisms at different stages of a severe accident; developing a method to study volatile FP behaviour, involving the investigation of SIMFuel samples manufactured at low temperature through SPS. In this paper, a focus is made on the impact of the oxygen potential towards the interaction between irradiated MOX fuels and the cladding, the interaction between Mo and Ba under oxidizing conditions and the assessment of the oxygen potential during sintering.

Abstract

This experimental and theoretical study is aimed at better quantifying the transport of Zn and Cd by hydrothermal fluids rich in sulfur by using in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We measured simultaneously fluorescence and transmission spectra of dissolved metal in NaHS-H2S, K2S2O3, Na2S2O3, K2S2O3-HCl aqueous solutions at 250-350°C and 600 bar. Here the first experimental results are presented. Possible sulfur speciation models for Zn and Cd are briefly discussed.
