The author provides information on proper safety precautions and labeling of hazardous materials commonly used in aircraft hangers. Topics include identifing dangerous materials, understanding hazard warning labels, and safe and legal disposal of hazardous waste.

The impact of the warning label content and format of chemical products in the workplace and the speed and accuracy of information retrieval is studied using 111 subjects and 27 labels. Results show that speed and accuracy increases whenever the information sought is available in the label. Material Safety Data Sheets were utilized in cases wherein the information is unavailable.

The European Union has issued directives for chemical labeling. These are the Seveso Directive, Dangerous Substances Directive and the Dangerous Preparations Directive. Labels are now required to contain numbers showing the degree of danger of chemical substances, with number one as the most dangerous. Descriptive phrases such as 'moderately harmful' have been added. Some countries have also required the labeling of chemicals in nine to eleven different languages.

Lawyers trying personal injury suits involving chemical products need to know how to obtain the most complete product information. The 'Material Safety Data Sheets' required by the 'Hazard Communication Standard' often do not provide complete information about hazards. Likewise, federal agency requirements on chemical information give a minimal standard of disclosure which employers often do not go beyond. Other labeling faults include no descriptions of required ventilation, of how to avoid the chemical's dangers, or of precursor symptoms of chemical toxicity.
