GDR Rift colloquium 2022Collection of abstracts. This conference was an opportunity to review current research in the Rift or on the Rift,and share and discuss during targeted workshops. These workshops were the place to initiate new projects, launch new collaborations, enrich our sometimes too disciplinary visions, and exchange. The colloquium was also a moment dedicated to a joint reflection on target areas, federating observatories allowing the acquisition, sharing, and distribution of interdisciplinary data over the long term. Specific workshops were proposed to identify and build these target areas with our Rift partners. We gathered 70 students and researchers, and 36 abstracts were presented either during oral presentation or with posters.

International audience; Wealth is a subject that is usually considered to be economic. However, it is a subject that also deserves to be explored from the point of view of the social sciences, and in particular anthropology. Indeed, in our case as elsewhere, it is an essential perspective. In the case of African rural societies, we will seek to discuss the following questions. What are the conceptions linked to wealth, how is it defined, what does it consist of? In what way do these conceptions oppose the Western notion of wealth? What are the sources, factors and strategies that lead to wealth, what are its manifestations and what are its effects? What are the channels of circulation or redistribution of wealth? Are they different in nature and importance from the flows that characterise our own societies? Are there great disparities in wealth between individuals, and what are the consequences? Can some societies be described as egalitarian and others as inegalitarian? Are there differences in living standards between rich and poor? What about upward or downward mobility of individual paths? Are there any mechanisms for regulating wealth? What is the relationship between wealth and the political system? Are rulers richer than their subjects, and what is the basis of their power?The role of wealth is presented by the seven speakers in this workshop in the context of various African societies; La richesse est un sujet volontiers considéré comme économique. Pourtant c’est un thème qui mérite aussi d’être approfondi du point de vue des sciences sociales, et notamment l’anthropologie. En effet, chez nous comme ailleurs, c’est une perspective essentielle. Dans le cas des sociétés rurales africaines, nous chercherons à débattre des questions suivantes. Quelles sont les conceptions liées à la richesse, comment se définit-elle, de quoi se compose-t-elle ? En quoi ces conceptions s’opposent-elles à la notion occidentale de richesse ? Quelles sont les sources, les facteurs et les stratégies qui mènent à la richesse, quelles sont ses manifestations et quels en sont les effets ? Quels sont les canaux de circulation ou de redistribution de la richesse ? Sont-ils de nature et d’importance différentes des flux qui caractérisent nos propres sociétés ? Observe-t-on de grandes disparités de fortune entre les individus, et quelles en sont les conséquences ? Peut-on qualifier certaines sociétés d’égalitaristes, et d’autres d’inégalitaires ? Y a-t-il, entre riches et pauvres, des différences de niveau de vie ? Qu’en est-il de la mobilité, vers le haut ou vers le bas, des parcours individuels ? Observe-t-on des mécanismes de régulation de la richesse ? Quel est le rapport entre richesse et système politique ? Les chefs sont-ils plus riches que leurs sujets, et quel est par ailleurs le fondement de leur pouvoir ?Le rôle de la richesse est présenté par les sept intervenants à cet atelier dans le cadre de diverses sociétés africaines

Les villes, en tant qu’objet des africanistes, ont été considérées comme le substrat matériel de la réflexion sur le politique africain. Saisie à travers l’opposition entre « communautés rurales » et « sociétés urbaines », la ville africaine fut cependant délimitée hors du champ des localités secondaires reléguées au monde de la ruralité. La localité de Béguédo (province du Boulgou, Burkina Faso) fournit le point d’ancrage d’une réflexion historique et anthropologique sur le statut politique d’une ville définie par la construction d’une forme de souveraineté. À partir de la notion de ville réticulaire (ville mais aussi « pays » construit sur la mobilité des activités productives et sur les réseaux économiques commerçants et migrants), nous montrerons le caractère déterminant de la relation entre le pays, l’arrière-pays et l’outre-pays dans la définition du statut politique de la ville. Entendue comme une forme d’entre-soi où s’enracinent les réseaux, et répondant aux modes de régulations sociaux et politiques d’une organisation lignagère, la localité de Béguédo alimente l’idée d’une ville segmentaire. Within African studies, cities have been seen as the material substrate for research on African politics. The African city, represented in terms of the rural/urban dichotomy, has been defined without taking into account secondary localities, seen as being of a rural nature. Béguédo (province of Bougou, Burkina Faso) provides the basis for a historical and anthropological analysis of the political status of a city defined by the emergence of a certain form of sovereignty. Based on the notion of reticular city, i.e. a city and its « countryside » that is constructed upon the mobility of productive activities and commercial and migratory economic networks, this article shows the importance of the relationship between the countryside, the hinterlands and regions beyond, in the definition of the city’s political status. Béguédo, envisaged as a form of us-ness from which networks derive and which is governed by lineage-based, social and political regulatory principles, suggests the idea of a segmentary city.
