6. Polarized neutron scattering studies of magnetic excitations in electron-overdoped superconducting BaFe$_{1.85}$Ni$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$

Abstract

We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering to study low-energy spin excitations and their spatial anisotropy in electron-overdoped superconducting BaFe$_{1.85}$Ni$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=14$ K). In the normal state, the imaginary part of the dynamic susceptibility, $\chi^{\prime\prime}(Q,\omega)$, at the antiferromagnetic (AF) wave vector $Q=(0.5,0.5,1)$ increases linearly with energy for $E\le 13$ meV. Upon entering the superconducting state, a spin gap opens below $E\approx 3$ meV and a broad neutron spin resonance appears at $E\approx 7$ meV. Our careful neutron polarization analysis reveals that $\chi^{\prime\prime}(Q,\omega)$ is isotropic for the in-plane and out-of-plane components in both the normal and superconducting states. A comparison of these results with those of undoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and optimally electron-doped BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=20$ K) suggests that the spin anisotropy observed in BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ is likely due to its proximity to the undoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Therefore, the neutron spin resonance is isotropic in the overdoped regime, consistent with a singlet to triplet excitation.

9. Anomalous vortex liquid in charge-ordered cuprate superconductors.

Abstract

The interplay between charge order and d-wave superconductivity in high-Tc cuprates remains an open question. While mounting evidence from spectroscopic probes indicates that charge order competes with superconductivity, to date little is known about the impact of charge order on charge transport in the mixed state, when vortices are present. Here we study the low-temperature electrical resistivity of three distinctly different cuprate families under intense magnetic fields, over a broad range of hole doping and current excitations. We find that the electronic transport in the doping regime where long-range charge order is known to be present is characterized by a nonohmic resistivity, the identifying feature of an anomalous vortex liquid. The field and temperature range in which this nonohmic behavior occurs indicates that the presence of long-range charge order is closely related to the emergence of this anomalous vortex liquid, near a vortex solid boundary that is defined by the excitation current in the T! 0 limit. Our findings further suggest that this anomalous vortex liquid, a manifestation of fragile superconductivity with a suppressed critical current density, is ubiquitous in the high-field state of charge-ordered cuprates. 10. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the spin and charge excitations in the overdoped superconductor La1.77Sr0.23CuO4

Abstract

We present a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of spin and charge excitations in overdoped La1.77Sr0.23CuO4 along two high-symmetry directions. The line shape of these excitations is analyzed and they are shown to be highly overdamped. Their spectral weight and damping are found to be strongly momentum dependent. Qualitative agreement between these observations and a calculated random-phase approximation susceptibility is obtained for this overdoped compound, implying that a significant contribution to the RIXS signal stems from a continuum of charge excitations. Furthermore, this suggests that the spin excitations in the overdoped regime can be captured qualitatively by an itinerant picture. Our calculations also predict a low-energy spin-excitation branch to exist along the nodal direction near the zone center. With the energy resolution of the present experiment, this branch is not resolvable, but we show that the next generation of high-resolution spectrometers will be able to test this prediction.

Abstract

International audience; We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La1.6−xNd0.4SrxCuO4 system. A comparative and quantitative line shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side (x = 0.20), a normal state anti-nodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below 80 K. In this process spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different lineshape is observed in the antinodal region of charge ordered Nd-LSCO x = 1/8. Significant low-energy spectral weight appears to be lost. These observations are discussed in terms of spectral weight redistribution and gapping originating from charge stripe ordering.

12. Charge density wave fluctuations in La2-x Srx CuO4 and their competition with superconductivity

Abstract

We report hard (14 keV) x-ray diffraction measurements on three compositions (x=0.11,0.12,0.13) of the high-temperature superconductor La2−xSrxCuO4. All samples show charge density wave (CDW) order with onset temperatures in the range 51–80 K and ordering wave vectors close to (0.23,0,0.5). The CDW is strongest with the longest in-plane correlation length near 1/8 doping. On entering the superconducting state the CDW is suppressed, demonstrating the strong competition between the charge order and superconductivity. CDW order coexists with incommensurate magnetic order and the wave vectors of the two modulations have the simple relationship δcharge=2δspin. The intensity of the CDW Bragg peak tracks the intensity of the low-energy (quasielastic) spin fluctuations. We present a phase diagram of La2−xSrxCuO4 including the pseudogap phase, CDW, and magnetic order.

Abstract

High-temperature superconductivity was first discovered by Georg Bednorz and Alex Muller in an unlikely mixture of La-Ba-Cu-O [1]. This was back in 1986, when Neutron News was no more than a gleam in Gerry Lander's eye. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of this new material was ∼30 K, which was substantially above the previous record of 23 K. The discovery, which was quite surprising given that transition-metal oxides were generally considered to be poor conductors, initiated a huge wave of excitement that we still feel echoes of today. Within a few months, M. K. Wu, C. W. (Paul) Chu, and collaborators, had discovered superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6+x with a Tc > 77 K, the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen. At the 1987 March Meeting of the American Physical Society, there was a post-deadline session on high Tc materials that started at 7 pm and lasted through early morning.
