Robust data association is critical for analysis of long-term motion trajectories in complex scenes. In its absence, trajectory precision suffers due to periods of kinematic ambiguity degrading the quality of follow-on analysis. Common optimization-based approaches often neglect uncertainty quantification arising from these events. Consequently, we propose the Joint Posterior Tracker (JPT), a Bayesian multi-object tracking algorithm that robustly reasons over the posterior of associations and trajectories. Novel, permutation-based proposals are crafted for exploration of posterior modes that correspond to plausible association hypotheses. JPT exhibits more accurate uncertainty representation of data associations with superior performance on standard metrics when compared to existing baselines. We also show the utility of JPT applied to automatic scheduling of user-in-the-loop annotations for improved trajectory quality.

The problem of identifying sparse solutions for the link structure and dynamics of an unknown linear, time-invariant network is posed as finding sparse solutions x to Ax=b. If the sensing matrix A satisfies a rank condition, this problem has a unique, sparse solution. Here each row of A comprises one experiment consisting of input/output measurements and cannot be freely chosen. We show that if experiments are poorly designed, the rank condition may never be satisfied, resulting in multiple solutions. We discuss experimental strategies for designing experiments such that the sensing matrix has the desired properties and the problem is therefore well posed. This formulation allows prior knowledge to be taken into account in the form of known nonzero entries of x, requiring fewer experiments to be performed. A number of simulated examples are given to illustrate the approach, which provides a useful strategy commensurate with the type of experiments and measurements available to biologists. This paper considers the problem of inferring an unknown network of dynamical systems driven by unknown, intrinsic, noise inputs. Equivalently we seek to identify direct causal dependencies among manifest variables only from observations of these variables. For linear, time-invariant systems of minimal order, we characterise under what conditions this problem is well posed. We first show that if the transfer matrix from the inputs to manifest states is minimum phase, this problem has a unique solution irrespective of the network topology. This is equivalent to there being only one valid spectral factor (up to a choice of signs of the inputs) of the output spectral density. If the assumption of phase-minimality is relaxed, we show that the problem is characterised by a single Algebraic Riccati Equation (ARE), of dimension determined by the number of latent states. The number of solutions to this ARE is an upper bound on the number of solutions for the network. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for any two dynamical networks to have equal output spectral density, which can be used to construct all equivalent networks. Extensive simulations quantify the number of solutions for a range of problem sizes. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for robust network reconstruction of Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems in the presence of noise, estimation errors and unmodelled nonlinearities. The method here builds on previous work on robust reconstruction to provide a practical implementation with polynomial computational complexity. Following the same experimental protocol, the algorithm obtains a set of structurally-related candidate solutions spanning every level of sparsity. We prove the existence of a magnitude bound on the noise, which if satisfied, guarantees that one of these structures is the correct solution. A problem-specific model-selection procedure then selects a single solution from this set and provides a measure of confidence in that solution. Many current and future NASA missions are capable of collecting enormous amounts of data, of which only a small portion can be transmitted to Earth. Communications are limited due to distance, visibility constraints, and competing mission downlinks. Long missions and high-resolution, multispectral imaging devices easily produce data exceeding the available bandwidth. To address this situation computationally efficient algorithms were developed for analyzing science imagery onboard the spacecraft. These algorithms autonomously cluster the data into classes of similar imagery, enabling selective downlink of representatives of each class, and a map classifying the terrain imaged rather than the full dataset, reducing the volume of the downlinked data.
