Scalable realization of quantum computing to attain substantial speedups over classical computing requires fault tolerance. Conventionally, protocols for fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC) demand excessive space overhead of physical qubits per logical qubit. A more recent protocol to achieve constant-space-overhead FTQC using quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes thus attracts considerable attention but suffers from another drawback: it incurs polynomially long time overhead. To address these problems, we here introduce an alternative approach using a concatenation of multiple small-size quantum codes for the constant-space-overhead FTQC rather than a single large-size quantum LDPC code. We develop techniques for concatenating different quantum Hamming codes with growing sizes. As a result, we construct a low-overhead protocol to achieve constant space overhead and only quasi-polylogarithmic time overhead simultaneously. Our protocol accomplishes FTQC even if a decoder has non-constant runtime, unlike the existing constant-space-overhead protocol. These results establish a foundation for FTQC realizing a large class of quantum speedups within feasibly bounded space overhead yet negligibly short time overhead. We investigate entanglement detection when the local measurements only nearly correspond to those intended. This corresponds to a scenario in which measurement devices are not perfectly controlled, but nevertheless operate with bounded inaccuracy. We formalize this through an operational notion of inaccuracy that can be estimated directly in the lab. To demonstrate the relevance of this approach, we show that small magnitudes of inaccuracy can significantly compromise several well-known entanglement witnesses. For two arbitrary-dimensional systems, we show how to compute tight corrections to a family of standard entanglement witnesses due to any given level of measurement inaccuracy. We also develop semidefinite programming methods to bound correlations in these scenarios.

Quantum resource theories provide a unified framework to quantitatively analyze inherent quantum properties as resources for quantum information processing. So as to investigate the best way for quantifying resources, desirable axioms for resource quantification have been extensively studied through axiomatic approaches. However, a conventional way of resource quantification by resource measures with such desired axioms may contradict rates of asymptotic transformation between resourceful quantum states due to an approximation in the transformation. In this paper, we establish an alternative axiom, asymptotic consistency of resource measures, and we investigate asymptotically consistent resource measures, which quantify resources without contradicting the rates of the asymptotic resource transformation. We prove that relative entropic measures are consistent with the rates for a broad class of resources, i.e., all convex finite-dimensional resources, e.g., entanglement, coherence, and magic, and even some nonconvex or infinite-dimensional resources such as quantum discord, non-Markovianity, and non-Gaussianity. Optimizing parameterized quantum circuits is a key routine in using near-term quantum devices. However, the existing algorithms for such optimization require an excessive number of quantum-measurement shots for estimating expectation values of observables and repeating many iterations, whose cost has been a critical obstacle for practical use. We develop an efficient alternative optimization algorithm, stochastic gradient line Bayesian optimization (SGLBO), to address this problem. SGLBO reduces the measurement-shot cost by estimating an appropriate direction of updating circuit parameters based on stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and further utilizing Bayesian optimization (BO) to estimate the optimal step size for each iteration in SGD. In addition, we formulate an adaptive measurement-shot strategy and introduce a technique of suffix averaging to reduce the effect of statistical and hardware noise. Our numerical simulation demonstrates that the SGLBO augmented with these techniques can drastically reduce the measurement-shot cost, improve the accuracy, and make the optimization noise-robust., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Quantum error correction (QEC) is one of the central concepts in quantum information science and also has wide applications in fundamental physics. The capacity theorems provide solid foundations of QEC. We here provide a general and highly applicable form of capacity theorem for both classical and quantum information, i.e., hybrid information, with assistance of a limited resource of entanglement in one-shot scenario, which covers broader situations than the existing ones. Harnessing the wide applicability of the theorem, we show that a demonstration of QEC by short random quantum circuits is feasible and that QEC is intrinsic in quantum chaotic systems. Quantum state exchange is a quantum communication task for two users in which the users faithfully exchange their respective parts of an initial state under the asymptotic scenario. In this work, we generalize the quantum state exchange task to a quantum communication task for $M$ users in which the users circularly transfer their respective parts of an initial state. We assume that every pair of users may share entanglement resources, and they use local operations and classical communication in order to perform the task. We call this generalized task the (asymptotic) quantum state rotation. First of all, we formally define the quantum state rotation task and its optimal entanglement cost, which means the least amount of total entanglement required to carry out the task. We then present lower and upper bounds on the optimal entanglement cost, and provide conditions for zero optimal entanglement cost. Based on these results, we find out a difference between the quantum state rotation task for three or more users and the quantum state exchange task., 26 pages, 10 figures

The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) quantum error correcting code attracts much attention in continuous variable (CV) quantum computation and CV quantum communication due to the simplicity of error correcting routines and the high tolerance against Gaussian errors. Since the GKP code state should be regarded as a limit of physically meaningful approximate ones, various approximations have been developed until today, but explicit relations among them are still unclear. In this paper, we rigorously prove the equivalence of these approximate GKP codes with an explicit correspondence of the parameters. We also propose a standard form of the approximate code states in the position representation, which enables us to derive closed-from expressions for the Wigner functions, the inner products, and the average photon numbers in terms of the theta functions. The quantum state exchange is a quantum communication task in which two users exchange their respective quantum information in the asymptotic setting. In this work, we consider a one-shot version of the quantum state exchange task, in which the users hold a single copy of the initial state, and they exchange their parts of the initial state by means of entanglement-assisted local operations and classical communication. We first derive lower bounds on the least amount of entanglement required for carrying out this task, and provide conditions on the initial state such that the protocol succeeds with zero entanglement cost. Based on these results, we reveal two counter-intuitive phenomena in this task, which make it different from a conventional SWAP operation. One tells how the users deal with their symmetric information in order to reduce the entanglement cost. The other shows that it is possible for the users to gain extra shared entanglement after this task., 7 pages, 3 figures

We consider a quantum communication task between two users Alice and Bob, in which Alice and Bob exchange their respective quantum information by means of local operations and classical communication assisted by shared entanglement. Here, we assume that Alice and Bob may have quantum side information, not transferred, and classical communication is free. In this work, we derive general upper and lower bounds for the least amount of entanglement which is necessary to perfectly perform this task, called the state exchange with quantum side information. Moreover, we show that the optimal entanglement cost can be negative when Alice and Bob make use of their quantum side information. We finally provide conditions on the initial state for the state exchange with quantum side information which give the exact optimal entanglement cost., 9 pages, 2 figures

Quantum resource theory under different classes of quantum operations advances multiperspective understandings of inherent quantum-mechanical properties, such as quantum coherence and quantum entanglement. We establish hierarchies of different operations for manipulating coherence and entanglement in distributed settings, where at least one of the two spatially separated parties are restricted from generating coherence. In these settings, we introduce new classes of operations and also characterize those maximal, i.e., the resource-non-generating operations, progressing beyond existing studies on incoherent versions of local operations and classical communication and those of separable operations. The maximal operations admit a semidefinite-programming formulation useful for numerical algorithms, whereas the existing operations not. To establish the hierarchies, we prove a sequence of inclusion relations among the operations by clarifying tasks where separation of the operations appears. We also demonstrate an asymptotically non-surviving separation of the operations in the hierarchy in terms of performance of the task of assisted coherence distillation, where a separation in a one-shot scenario vanishes in the asymptotic limit. The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) quantum error-correcting code has emerged as a key technique in achieving fault-tolerant quantum computation using photonic systems. Whereas [Baragiola et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 200502 (2019)] showed that experimentally tractable Gaussian operations combined with preparing a GKP codeword $\lvert 0\rangle$ suffice to implement universal quantum computation, this implementation scheme involves a distillation of a logical magic state $\lvert H\rangle$ of the GKP code, which inevitably imposes a trade-off between implementation cost and fidelity. In contrast, we propose a scheme of preparing $\lvert H\rangle$ directly and combining Gaussian operations only with $\lvert H\rangle$ to achieve the universality without this magic state distillation. In addition, we develop an analytical method to obtain bounds of fundamental limit on transformation between $\lvert H\rangle$ and $\lvert 0\rangle$, finding an application of quantum resource theories to cost analysis of quantum computation with the GKP code. Multipartite quantum entanglement serves as a resource for spatially separated parties performing distributed quantum information processing. Any multipartite entangled state can be generated from appropriately distributed bipartite entangled states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC), and in this sense, any distributed process based on shared multipartite entanglement and LOCC is simulatable by using only bipartite entangled states and LOCC. We show here that this reduction scenario does not hold when there exists a limitation on the size of the local quantum system of each party. Under such a limitation, we prove that there exists a set of multipartite quantum states such that these states in the set cannot be prepared from any distribution of bipartite entanglement while the states can be prepared from a common resource state exhibiting multipartite entanglement. We also show that temporal uses of bipartite quantum communication resources within a limitation of local system sizes are sufficient for preparing this common resource state exhibiting multipartite entanglement, yet there also exist other states exhibiting multipartite entanglement which cannot be prepared even in this setting. Encoding and decoding quantum information in a multipartite quantum system are indispensable for quantum error correction and also play crucial roles in multiparty tasks in distributed quantum information processing such as quantum secret sharing. To quantitatively characterize nonlocal properties of multipartite quantum transformations for encoding and decoding, we analyze entanglement costs of encoding and decoding quantum information in a multipartite quantum system distributed among spatially separated parties connected by a network. This analysis generalizes previous studies of entanglement costs for preparing bipartite and multipartite quantum states and implementing bipartite quantum transformations by entanglement-assisted local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We identify conditions for the parties being able to encode or decode quantum information in the distributed quantum system deterministically and exactly, when inter-party quantum communication is restricted to a tree-topology network. In our analysis, we reduce the multiparty tasks of implementing the encoding and decoding to sequential applications of one-shot zero-error quantum state splitting and merging for two parties. While encoding and decoding are inverse tasks of each other, our results suggest that a quantitative difference in entanglement cost between encoding and decoding arises due to the difference between quantum state merging and splitting., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

Recent advances in quantum technology facilitate the realization of information processing using quantum computers at least on the small and intermediate scales of up to several dozens of qubits. We investigate entanglement cost required for one-shot quantum state merging, aiming at quantum state transformation on these scales. In contrast to existing coding algorithms achieving nearly optimal approximate quantum state merging on a large scale, we construct algorithms for exact quantum state merging so that the algorithms are applicable to any given state of an arbitrarily small-dimensional system. In the algorithms, entanglement cost can be reduced depending on a structure of the given state derived from the Koashi-Imoto decomposition. We also provide improved converse bounds for exact quantum state merging achievable for qubits but not necessarily achievable in general. As for approximate quantum state merging, we obtain algorithms and improved converse bounds by applying smoothing to those for exact state merging. The isotopic production cross sections for the reactions of 136Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/u were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence of the cross sections was investigated systematically. It was found that for the light-mass products, the cross sections on carbon are larger than those on deuteron and proton. The measured cross sections on proton were compared with the previous data at higher reaction energies to study the energy dependence. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical calculations including both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes using PHITS and with the EPAX and SPACS empirical parameterizations.

We introduce and analyze graph-associated entanglement cost, a generalization of the entanglement cost of quantum states to multipartite settings. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for any multipartite entangled state to be constructible when quantum communication between the multiple parties is restricted to a quantum network represented by a tree. The condition for exact state construction is expressed in terms of the Schmidt ranks of the state defined with respect to edges of the tree. 42 patients with cervical myelopathy due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament have been treated in our clinic since 1953. There were 34 males and and 8 females, and 21 cases in the segmental type of ossification, 6 in the continued type and 15 in the mixed type.Anterior approach was done in 17 cases to remove the ossification and poserior approach was taken in 19 cases. In 2 cases posterior approach was performed after the vertebral bodies were fused.There is no difference in the results between the anterior approach and the posterior approach.Dynamic roentgenogram is useful for determination of the indication. There are two types of the cases with movable or non-movable intervertebral space in which myelographic filling defect was seen during flexing the cervical spine. The anterior approach is indicated in the movable type. Either the anterior approach or the posterior approach is taken in the non-movable type.

We have studied spallation reactions for the fission products 137 Cs and 90 Sr for the purpose of nuclear waste transmutation. The spallation cross sections on the proton and deuteron were obtained in inverse kinematics for the first time using secondary beams of 137 Cs and 90 Sr at 185 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence has been investigated systematically, and the cross-section differences between the proton and deuteron are found to be larger for lighter spallation products. The experimental data are compared with the PHITS calculation, which includes cascade and evaporation processes. Our results suggest that both proton- and deuteron-induced spallation reactions are promising mechanisms for the transmutation of radioactive fission products.
