Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI), Multan, Pakistan has evolved an upland cotton cultivar Cyto-124 through introgression for Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (Begomovirus) resistance. It was developed through crossing [{2(Gossypium hirsutum x Gossypium anomalum) X ³Gossypium hirsutum} x {2(Gossypium arborium x Gossypium anomalum) x ²G. hirsutum]. It was tested for seed cotton yield in varietal trials, and zonal varietal trials at Govt. and farmer fields. Cyto-124 gave 37.1, 19.9 and 22.4% higher yield as compared to three standards MNH-786, CIM-554 and CRSM-38 respectively in varietal trials while Cyto-124 had seedcotton yield of 3075 kgha-1 in-contrast to 2919 kg ha-1 of CIM-573 in zonal trials. Cyto-124 produced more seedcotton yield (SCY) than the standards for two consecutive years (2013 & 2014) in National Coordinated Varietal Trial (NCVT). In NCVT during 2013-14, this strain had a maximum yield of 2244 kg ha-1 compared with 1326 kg ha-1 of standard variety CIM-573 in Punjab. The virus data taken in NCVT indicated that minimum disease incidence (27.9%) was recorded in Cyto-124 making it the more tolerant strain against CLCuV. Variation is very important for the plant breeders and selection is effective when magnitude of variability in the breeding population is adequate. Genetic variability and heritability were observed among F2:4 populations of cotton for three seasons. Parents, including G. barbadense (Askabat-100), G. hirsutum (Nazilli84S, Giza45, Albania-6172 and IS-4), and their F2:4 populations were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications during 2015. Statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences for all the traits. On average basis, the F2:4 populations showed better performance than parental cultivars for yield and yield components. Additionally, from moderately high to high heritability (broad sense) values (0.61-0.95) were calculated for all parameters in the populations. Yield contributing components specially number of bolls per plant and boll weight directly affected the seed cotton yield in all populations among which Albania6172 x Giza 45 exhibited the highest boll weight. In general, our results revealed that F2:4 populations developed by single seed descent method held not only a larger genetic potential but also a positive association between yield and yield contributing traits. As a whole, it might be interpreted that moderate to high heritability could be used a selective parameter for plant improvement in segregating populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new variety CIM-608 has been developed through interspecific hybridization i.e. 2 (Gossypium hirsutum × G. anomalum) × 3G. hirsutum. at Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan. The variety produced significantly higher yield in varietal trials compared with standard variety i.e. MNH-786. CIM-608 was also evaluated in varietal and Zonal Varietal Trials at farmers' fields and Govt. Farms. In varietal trials CIM-608 gave 33.7%, and 8.97% more yield over commercial varieties MNH-786 and CIM-554, respectively for seed cotton yield. While in Zonal varietal trial during 2010-11, CIM-608 gave 2828 Kg ha-1 yield of seed cotton as compared to standard variety CIM-554 (2600 Kg ha-1). In National Co-ordinated Varietal Trial (NCVT), CIM-608 dominated over most existing varieties/strains in two consecutive years i.e. 2010-11 and 2011-12 for seed cotton yield. This variety showed tolerance to Burewala Strain of cotton leaf curl virus (BSCuV). CIM-608 has combination of characters including CLCuV tolerance, earliness, and heat tolerance with good fibre characteristics.
