Search

The detections of gravitational waves (GW) by LIGO/Virgo collaborations provide various possibilities to physics and astronomy. We are quite sure that GW observations will develop a lot both in precision and in number owing to the continuous works for the improvement of detectors, including the expectation to the newly joined detector, KAGRA, and the planned detector, LIGO-India. In this occasion, we review the fundamental outcomes and prospects of gravitational wave physics and astronomy. We survey the development focusing on representative sources of gravitational waves: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and supernovae. The circular polarisation of gravitational waves from core collapse supernovae has been proposed as a probe to investigate the rotation and physical features inside the core of the supernovae. However, it is still unclear as to how detectable the circular polarisation of gravitational waves will be. We developed an algorithm referred to as the Stokes Circular Polarisation algorithm for the computation of the Stokes parameters that works with the burst search pipeline coherent WaveBurst. Employing the waveform SFHx and the algorithm, we estimate the detectability of the circular polarisation signatures (V mode of the Stokes parameters) for sources across the sky at three different distances 2, 5, and 10 kpc, for a network of gravitational wave detectors consisted of advanced LIGO, advanced VIRGO and KAGRA. Using the Bayes factor, we found that for 2 kpc and 5 kpc, the majority of the sources (99.9% and 58.2% respectively) will have their V mode detectable, while for 10 kpc, no significant V mode is detectable. In addition, the significance of the V mode signature are consistent with the recoverability of the two polarisations of gravitational waves with respect to the network.

Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space mission with a frequency band of 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz. DECIGO aims at the detection of primordial gravitational waves, which could be produced during the inflationary period right after the birth of the universe. There are many other scientific objectives of DECIGO, including the direct measurement of the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, and reliable and accurate predictions of the timing and locations of neutron star/black hole binary coalescences. DECIGO consists of four clusters of observatories placed in the heliocentric orbit. Each cluster consists of three spacecraft, which form three Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers with an arm length of 1,000 km. Three clusters of DECIGO will be placed far from each other, and the fourth cluster will be placed in the same position as one of the three clusters to obtain the correlation signals for the detection of the primordial gravitational waves. We plan to launch B-DECIGO, which is a scientific pathfinder of DECIGO, before DECIGO in the 2030s to demonstrate the technologies required for DECIGO, as well as to obtain fruitful scientific results to further expand the multi-messenger astronomy., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Upgrades to improve the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors enable more frequent detections and more precise source parameter estimation. Unlike other advanced interferometric detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, KAGRA requires different approach for the upgrade since it is the only detector which employs cryogenic cooling of the test masses. In this paper, we describe possible KAGRA upgrades with technologies focusing on different detector bands, and compare the impacts on the detection of compact binary coalescences. We show that either fivefold improvement in the $100 M_{\odot}$--$100 M_{\odot}$ binary black hole range, a factor of 1.3 improvement in the binary neutron star range, or a factor of 1.7 improvement in the sky localization of binary neutron stars is well feasible with upgrades that do not require changes in the existing cryogenic or vacuum infrastructure. Unveiling physical processes in a supernova is one of challenging topics of modern physics and astrophysics since that event is due to particle physics on a stellar scale and tightly related to nucleosynthesis in Universe. Multi-messenger astronomy, a combination, such as of electromagnetic-wave, gravitational-wave, and neutrino observations, will be a breakthrough to the puzzle. To boost the research, we released a web-based gravitational wave signal analyzer "SuperNova Event Gravitational-wave-display in Fukuoka (SNEGRAF)" last year (Eguchi et al. 2019). We are now working on an integration of the application with the RIDGE pipeline, which is for a coherent network analysis between the LIGO, VIRGO, and KAGRA observations (Hayama et al. 2007), and implemented in MATLAB. In the basic design phase, we decided to wrap RIDGE with a simple Python script and make it listen for connections from SNEGRAF. This design enables these two programs to be hosted on different servers independently, and minimizes the cyber risks of RIDGE. KAGRA is a new gravitational wave detector which aims to begin joint observation with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo from late 2019. Here, we present KAGRA's possible upgrade plans to improve the sensitivity in the decade ahead. Unlike other state-of-the-art detectors, KAGRA requires different investigations for the upgrade since it is the only detector which employs cryogenic cooling of the test mass mirrors. In this paper, investigations on the upgrade plans which can be realized by changing the input laser power, increasing the mirror mass, and injecting frequency dependent squeezed vacuum are presented. We show how each upgrade affects to the detector frequency bands and also discuss impacts on gravitational-wave science. There exist six possible polarization modes of gravitational waves in general metric theory of gravity, while two tensor polarization modes are allowed in general relativity. The properties and number of polarization modes depend on gravity theories. The number of the detectors needs to be equal to the number of the polarization modes of the gravitational waves for separation of polarizations basically. However, a single detector having great sensitivity at lower frequency could be effectively regarded as a virtual detector network including a set of detectors along its trajectory due to a long GW signal from a compact binary and the Earth's rotation. Thus, time-varying antenna pattern functions can help testing the polarizations of gravitational waves. We study the effects of the Earth's rotation on the polarization test and show a possibility to test the non-tensorial polarization modes from future observations of compact binary mergers with ground-based gravitational detectors such as Einstein telescope and Cosmic Explorer., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

A direct detection of gravitational waves is one of the most exciting frontiers for modern astronomy and astrophysics. Gravitational wave signals combined with classical electro-magnetic observations, known as multi-messenger astronomy, promise newer and deeper insights about the cosmic evolution of astrophysical objects such as neutron starts and black holes. To this end, we have been developing an original data processing pipeline for KAGRA, a Japanese gravitational wave telescope, for optimal detections of supernova events. As a part of our project, we released a web application named SuperNova Event Gravitational-wave-display in Fukuoka (SNEGRAF) in autumn 2018. SNEGRAF accepts the users' theoretical waveforms as a plain text file consisting of a time series of $h_{+}$ and $h_{\times}$ (the plus and cross mode of gravitational waves, respectively), then displays the input, a corresponding spectrogram, and power spectrum together with KAGRA sensitivity curve and the signal-to-noise ratio; we adopt Google Visualization API for the interactive visualization of the input waveforms. However, it is a time-consuming task to draw more than $\sim 10^{5}$ data points directly with JavaScript, although the number can be typical for a supernova hunt by assuming a typical duration of the event and sampling rate of the detectors; a combination of recursive decimations of the original in the server-side program and an appropriate selection of them depending on the time duration requested by the user in a web browser achieves an acceptable latency. Recent core-collapse supernova (CCSN) simulations have predicted several distinct features in gravitational-wave (GW) spectrograms, including a ramp-up signature due to the g-mode oscillation of the proto-neutron star (PNS) and an excess in the low-frequency domain (100-300 Hz) potentially induced by the standing accretion shock instability (SASI). These predictions motivated us to perform a sophisticated time-frequency analysis (TFA) of the GW signals, aimed at preparation for future observations. By reanalyzing a gravitational waveform obtained in a three-dimensional general-relativistic CCSN simulation, we show that both the spectrogram with an adequate window and the quadratic TFA separate the multimodal GW signatures much more clearly compared with the previous analysis. We find that the observed low-frequency excess during the SASI active phase is divided into two components, a stronger one at 130 Hz and an overtone at 260 Hz, both of which evolve quasi-statically during the simulation time. We also identify a new mode whose frequency varies from 700 to 600 Hz. Furthermore, we develop the quadratic TFA for the Stokes I, Q, U, and V parameters as a new tool to investigate the GW circular polarization. We demonstrate that the polarization states that randomly change with time after bounce are associated with the PNS g-mode oscillation, whereas a slowly changing polarization state in the low-frequency domain is connected to the PNS core oscillation. Gravitational waves have only two polarization modes in General Relativity. However, there are six possible modes of polarization in metric theory of gravity in general. The tests of gravitational waves polarization can be tools for pursuing the nature of space-time structure. The observations of gravitational waves with a world-wide network of interferometric detectors such as Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA will make it possible to obtain the information of gravitational wave polarization from detector signals. We study the separability of the polarization modes for the inspiral gravitational waves from the compact binary coalescences systematically. Unlike other waveforms such as burst, the binary parameters need to be properly considered. We show that the three polarization modes of the gravitational waves would be separable with the global network of three detectors to some extent, depending on signal-to-noise ratio and the duration of the signal. We also show that with four detectors the three polarization modes would be more easily distinguished by breaking a degeneracy of the polarization modes and even the four polarization modes would be separable., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Cryogenic cooling of the test masses of interferometric gravitational wave detectors is a promising way to reduce thermal noise. However, cryogenic cooling limits the incident power to the test masses, which limits the freedom of shaping the quantum noise. Cryogenic cooling also requires short and thick suspension fibers to extract heat, which could result in the worsening of thermal noise. Therefore, careful tuning of multiple parameters is necessary in designing the sensitivity of cryogenic gravitational wave detectors. Here, we propose the use of particle swarm optimization to optimize the parameters of these detectors. We apply it for designing the sensitivity of the KAGRA detector, and show that binary neutron star inspiral range can be improved by 10%, just by retuning seven parameters of existing components. We also show that the sky localization of GW170817-like binaries can be further improved by a factor of 1.6 averaged across the sky. Detection of gravitational waves(GW) involves using the network of GW telescopes to observe a large sky region. However, owing to the arrangement of the GW telescopes, even with aLIGO- aVirgo-KAGRA network,parameter estimation accuracy deteriorates depending on the sky region of the GW source due to the ill-posed nature of the inverse operator. A regularization-based method is proposed herein to improve parameter estimation accuracy. Although conventional regularization methods cannot optimize all regulator parameters completely, the proposed method archives full optimization by applying an a-posteriori parameter choice rule to determine regulator parameters. We demonstrate that the proposed method can shrink the credible regions of inclination vs lumi- nosity distance and polarization vs initial phase significantly in the sky wherein the accuracy of the amplitude parameters of a GW has been deteriorated. The proposed method suppresses the systematic error of a GW depending on the sky region and allows us investigating the cosmological information more precisely., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

We present an analysis of the circular polarization of gravitational-waves (GWs) using results from three-dimensional (3D), general relativistic (GR) core-collapse simulations of a non-rotating $15 M_{\odot}$ star. For the signal detection, we perform a coherent network analysis taking into account the four interferometers of LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, VIRGO, and KAGRA. We focus on the Stokes $V$ parameter, which directly characterizes the asymmetry of the GW circular polarization. We find that the amplitude of the GW polarization becomes bigger for our 3D-GR model that exhibits strong activity of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI). Our results suggest that the SASI-induced accretion flows to the proto-neutron star (PNS) lead to a characteristic, low-frequency modulation (100 $\sim$ 200 Hz) in both the waveform and the GW circular polarization. During the vigorous SASI phase, we observe that the GW polarization switches from the right- to left-handed mode, which is clearly visible in the spectrogram. By estimating the signal-to-noise ratio of the GW polarization, we demonstrate that the detection horizon of the circular polarization extends by more than a factor of several times farther comparing to that of the GW amplitude. Our results suggest that the GW circular polarization, if detected, could provide a new probe into the pre-explosion hydrodynamics such as the SASI activity and the $g$-mode oscillation of the PNS., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Correlated magnetic noise from Schumann resonances threatens to contaminate the observation of a stochastic gravitational-wave background in interferometric detectors. In previous work, we reported on the first effort to eliminate global correlated noise from the Schumann resonances using Wiener filtering, demonstrating as much as a factor of two reduction in the coherence between magnetometers on different continents. In this work, we present results from dedicated magnetometer measurements at the Virgo and KAGRA sites, which are the first results for subtraction using data from gravitational-wave detector sites. We compare these measurements to a growing network of permanent magnetometer stations, including at the LIGO sites. We show how dedicated measurements can reduce coherence to a level consistent with uncorrelated noise. We also show the effect of mutual magnetometer attraction, arguing that magnetometers should be placed at least one meter from one another.

KAGRA is a 3-km cryogenic interferometric gravitational wave telescope located at an underground site in Japan. In order to achieve its target sensitivity, the relative positions of the mirrors of the interferometer must be finely adjusted with attached actuators. We have developed a model to simulate the length control loops of the KAGRA interferometer with realistic suspension responses and various noises for mirror actuation. We present results from general-relativistic (GR) three-dimensional (3D) core-collapse simulations with approximate neutrino transport for three non-rotating progenitors (11.2, 15, and 40 Msun) using different nuclear equations of state (EOSs). We find that the combination of progenitor's higher compactness at bounce and the use of softer EOS leads to stronger activity of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI). We confirm previous predications that the SASI produces characteristic time modulations both in neutrino and gravitational-wave (GW) signals. By performing a correlation analysis of the SASI-modulated neutrino and GW signals, we find that the correlation becomes highest when we take into account the time-delay effect due to the advection of material from the neutrino sphere to the proto-neutron star core surface. Our results suggest that the correlation of the neutrino and GW signals, if detected, would provide a new signature of the vigorous SASI activity in the supernova core, which can be hardly seen if neutrino-convection dominates over the SASI., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We propose to employ the circular polarization of gravitational waves emitted by core-collapse supernovae as an unequivocal indication of rapid rotation deep in their cores. It has been demonstrated by three dimensional simulations that non-axisymmetric accretion flows may develop spontaneously via hydrodynamical instabilities in the post-bounce cores. It is not surprising then that the gravitational waves emitted by such fluid motions are circularly polarized. We show in this letter that a network of the second generation detectors of gravitational waves worldwide may be able to detect such polarizations up to the opposite side of Galaxy as long as the rotation period is shorter than a few seconds prior to collapse., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The next Galactic supernova is expected to bring great opportunities for the direct detection of gravitational waves (GW), full flavor neutrinos, and multi-wavelength photons. To maximize the science return from such a rare event, it is essential to have established classes of possible situations and preparations for appropriate observations. To this end, we use a long-term numerical simulation of the core-collapse supernova (CCSN) of a 17 solar-mass red supergiant progenitor to self-consistently model the multi-messenger signals expected in GW, neutrino, and electromagnetic messengers. This supernova model takes into account the formation and evolution of a protoneutron star, neutrino-matter interaction, and neutrino transport, all within a two-dimensional shock hydrodynamics simulation. With this, we separately discuss three situations: (i) a CCSN at the Galactic Center, (ii) an extremely nearby CCSN within hundreds of parsecs, and (iii) a CCSN in nearby galaxies within several Mpc. These distance regimes necessitate different strategies for synergistic observations. In a Galactic CCSN, neutrinos provide strategic timing and pointing information. We explore how these in turn deliver an improvement in the sensitivity of GW analyses and help to guarantee observations of early electromagnetic signals. To facilitate the detection of multi-messenger signals of CCSNe in extremely nearby and extragalactic distances, we compile a list of nearby red supergiant candidates and a list of nearby galaxies with their expected CCSN rates. By exploring the sequential multi-messenger signals of a nearby CCSN, we discuss preparations for maximizing successful studies of such an unprecedented stirring event., Comment: A typo in eq. Using predictions from three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics simulations of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), we present a coherent network analysis to detection, reconstruction, and the source localization of the gravitational-wave (GW) signals. We use the {\tt RIDGE} pipeline for the analysis, in which the network of LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, VIRGO, and KAGRA is considered. By combining with a GW spectrogram analysis, we show that several important hydrodynamics features in the original waveforms persist in the waveforms of the reconstructed signals. The characteristic excess in the spectrograms originates not only from rotating core-collapse, bounce and the subsequent ring down of the proto-neutron star (PNS) as previously identified, but also from the formation of magnetohydrodynamics jets and non-axisymmetric instabilities in the vicinity of the PNS. Regarding the GW signals emitted near at the rotating core bounce, the horizon distance extends up to $\sim$ 18 kpc for the most rapidly rotating 3D model in this work. Following the rotating core bounce, the dominant source of the GW emission shifts to the non-axisymmetric instabilities. The horizon distances extend maximally up to $\sim$ 40 kpc seen from the spin axis. With an increasing number of 3D models trending towards explosion recently, our results suggest that in addition to the best studied GW signals due to rotating core-collapse and bounce, the time is ripe to consider how we can do science from GWs of CCSNe much more seriously than before. Particularly the quasi-periodic signals due to the non-axisymmetric instabilities and the detectability should deserve further investigation to elucidate the inner-working of the rapidly rotating CCSNe., Comment: PRD in press

In a general metric theory of gravitation in four dimensions, six polarizations of a gravitational wave are allowed: two scalar and two vector modes, in addition to two tensor modes in general relativity. Such additional polarization modes appear due to additional degrees of freedom in modified gravity theories. Also graviton mass, which could be different in each polarization, is another characteristic of modification of gravity. Thus, testing the existence of additional polarization modes and graviton mass can be a model-independent test of gravity theories. Here we extend the previous framework of correlation analysis of a gravitational-wave background to the massive case and show that a ground-based detector network can probe for massive stochastic gravitational waves with its mass around ~10^{-14} eV. The observation of gravitational waves with a global network of interferometric detectors such as advanced LIGO, advanced Virgo, and KAGRA will make it possible to probe into the nature of space-time structure. Besides Einstein's general theory of relativity, there are several theories of gravitation that passed experimental tests so far. The gravitational-wave observation provides a new experimental test of alternative theories of gravity because a gravitational wave may have at most six independent modes of polarization, of which properties and number of modes are dependent on theories of gravity. This paper proposes a method to reconstruct the independent modes of polarization in time-series data of an advanced detector network. Since the method does not rely on any specific model, it gives model-independent test of alternative theories of gravity.

Significant progress has been made in the development of an international network of gravitational wave detectors, such as TAMA300, LIGO, VIRGO, and GEO600. For these detectors, one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves are core collapse supernovae especially in our Galaxy. Recent simulations of core collapse supernovae, rigorously carried out by various groups, show that the features of the waveforms are determined by the rotational profiles of the core, such as the rotation rate and the degree of the differential rotation prior to core-collapse. Specifically, it has been predicted that the sign of the second largest peak in the gravitational wave strain signal is negative if the core rotates cylindrically with strong differential rotation. The sign of the second peak could be a nice indicator that provides us with information about the angular momentum distribution of the core, unseen without gravitational wave signals. Here we present a data analysis procedure aiming at the detection of the second peak using a coherent network analysis and estimate the detection efficiency when a supernova is at the sky location of the Galactic center. The simulations showed we were able to determine the sign of the second peak under an idealized condition of a network of gravitational wave detectors if a supernova occurs at the Galactic center., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, add references and some sentenses. Sco X-1, the brightest low mass X-ray binary, is likely to be a source for gravitational wave emission. In one mechanism, emission of a gravitational wave arrests the increase in spin frequency due to the accretion torque in a low mass X-ray binary. Since the gravitational waveform is unknown, a detection method assuming no apriori knowledge of the signal is preferable. In this paper, we propose to search for a gravitational wave from Sco X-1 using a {{\it source tracking}} method based on a coherent network analysis. In the method, we combine data from several interferometric gravitational wave detectors taking into account of the direction to Sco X-1, and reconstruct two polarization waveforms at the location of Sco X-1 in the sky as Sco X-1 is moving. The source tracking method opens up the possibility of searching for a wide variety of signals. Pulsar glitches are a potential source of gravitational waves for current and future interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Some pulsar glitch events were observed by radio and X-ray telescopes during the fifth LIGO science run. It is expected that glitches from these same pulsars should also be seen in the future. We carried out Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the sensitivity of possible gravitational wave signals associated with a pulsar glitch using a coherent network analysis method. We show the detection efficiency and evaluate the reconstruction accuracy of gravitational waveforms using a matched filter analysis on the estimated gravitational waveforms from the coherent analysis algorithm., Comment: submitted to CQG

We propose to search for gravitational waves from PKS 2155-304 as well as other blazars. PKS 2155-304 emitted a long duration energetic flare in July 2006, with total isotropic equivalent energy released in TeV gamma rays of approximately $10^{45}$ ergs. Any possible gravitational wave signals associated with this outburst should be seen by gravitational wave detectors at the same time as the electromagnetic signal. During this flare, the two LIGO interferometers at Hanford and the GEO detector were in operation and collecting data. For this search we will use the data from multiple gravitational wave detectors. The method we use for this purpose is a coherent network analysis algorithm and is called {\tt RIDGE}. To estimate the sensitivity of the search, we perform numerical simulations. The sensitivity to estimated gravitational wave energy at the source is about $2.5 \times 10^{55}$ ergs for a detection probability of 20%. Searches for gravitational wave bursts that are triggered by the observation of astronomical events require a different mode of analysis than all-sky, blind searches. For one, much more prior information is usually available in a triggered search which can and should be used in the analysis. Second, since the data volume is usually small in a triggered search, it is also possible to use computationally more expensive algorithms for tasks such as data pre-processing that can consume significant computing resources in a high data-volume un-triggered search. From the statistical point of view, the reduction in the parameter space search volume leads to higher sensitivity than an un-triggered search. We present data-analysis schemes and results of observations with the TAMA300 gravitational-wave detector, targeting burst signals from stellar-core collapse events. In analyses for burst gravitational waves, the detection and fake-reduction schemes are different from well-investigated ones for a chirp-wave analysis, because precise waveform templates are not available. We used an excess-power filter for the extraction of gravitational-wave candidates, and developed two methods for the reduction of fake events caused by non-stationary noises of the detector. These analysis schemes were applied to real data from the TAMA300 interferometric gravitational wave detector. As a result, fake events were reduced by a factor of about 1000 in the best cases. The resultant event candidates were interpreted from an astronomical viewpoint. We set an upper limit of 2.2x10^3 events/sec on the burst gravitational-wave event rate in our Galaxy with a confidence level of 90%. This work sets a milestone and prospects on the search for burst gravitational waves, by establishing an analysis scheme for the observation data from an interferometric gravitational wave detector.
