Monodisperse epsilon-caprolactone (CL) oligomers with different end groups (t-butyldimethylsilyl, benzyl, hydroxyl, and carboxylic acid) and different numbers of repeating units (4-64) have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in order to gather information regarding the melting temperature, long period, and melting enthalpy. Oligomers crystallized at their maximum temperatures (different for the different oligomers) to full crystallinity yielded extended-chain crystals for oligomers with 4, 8, and 16 repeating units with the important exception of the oligomers with four and eight repeating units and hydroxyl and benzyl end groups that showed double-layer crystals. Oligomers with 32 and 64 repeating units exhibited remarkably stable once-folded (32-mer) and thrice-folded (64-mer) crystals. Only the oligomer with 16 repeating units showed two crystallization temperature regimes resulting in once-folded crystals (low temperatures) and extended-chain crystals (high temperatures). The end groups had a profound effect on the structures. Hydrogen-bonding groups promoted the formation of crystal bilayers and led to a very high melting enthalpy (150 J g(-1)) exceeding the melting enthalpy of 100% crystalline poly (epsilon-caprolactone). The bulky end groups, in particular t-butyldimethylsilyl, reduced the crystallinity and favored chain tilting and probably preventing the unfolding of crystal stems in the oligomers with 32 and 64 repeating units. The development of selective chemistries that are orthogonal to the diverse array of functional groups present in many polymeric systems is becoming an important tool for the synthesis and use of macromolecules in fields ranging from biomedical devices to nanotechnology. By combining copper-catalyzed cycloaddition chemistry with other synthetic transformations such as esterification, amidation, etc., highly efficient and modular simultaneous and cascade functionalization strategies have been developed. The high fidelity and efficiency of Click chemistry are exploited in the synthesis of a library of chain end functionalized dendritic macromolecules. In this example, the selectivity of the Cu-catalyzed [3 + 2 pi] cycloaddition reaction of azides with terminal acetylenes, coupled with mild reaction conditions, permits unprecedented functional group tolerance during the derivatization of dendrimeric and hyperbranched scaffolds. The resulting dendritic libraries are structurally diverse, encompassing a variety of backbones/surface functional groups, and are prepared in almost quantitative yields under very mild conditions. The influence of macromolecular architecture on the physical properties of polymeric materials has been studied by comparing poly(benzyl ether) dendrons with their exact linear analogues. The results clearly confirm the anticipation that dendrimers are unique when compared to other architectures. Physical properties, from hydrodynamic volume to crystallinity, were shown to be different, and in a comparative study of core encapsulation in macromolecules of different architecture, energy transduction from the polymer backbone to a porphyrin core was shown to be different for dendrimers as compared to that of isomeric four- or eight-arm star polymers. Fluorescence excitation revealed strong, morphology dependent intramolecular energy transfer in the three macromolecular isomers investigated, Even at high generations, the dendrimers exhibited the most efficient energy transfer, thereby indicating that the dendritic architecture affords superior site isolation to the central porphyrin it surrounds., QC 20100525

The use of hyperbranched polymer (HBP) as a processing aid for linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) in the tubular film blowing process was investigated. Through the addition of HBP, sharkskin was successfully eliminated without significantly changing the overall physical properties of LLDPE films. Also, there was a minimum of 40% enhancement in processing rate with addition of 0.5 wt% HBP. The study showed that HBP and LLDPE are immiscible, and HBP has a tendency to migrate to the surface, subsequently, it seems to form a lubricating layer between the metal surfaces and the bulk material. This phase separation between HBP and LLDPE results in an HBP-rich surface, which has a high potential to create unique surface properties tailored to various applications. Rheological analysis indicated that excessive slip was present in HBP/LLDPE suggesting that the onset of slip is not the cause of sharkskin. Living ring opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone initiated from the numerous chain-end hydroxymethyl groups of the analogous dendrimeric and hyperbranched polyesters derived from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid is described. By controlling the size of the dendritic macromolecule and the molar ratio of epsilon-caprolactone, a variety of highly branched radial block copolymers are obtained. Comparison of the results obtained for the dendrimeric and hyperbranched initiators demonstrates that the reactivity of the chain-end hydroxymethyl groups in the dendrimer are significantly greater than in the isomeric hyperbranched case.
