4. Characterization of the Pore Structure of Porous Media Using non‐Newtonian Fluids

Abstract

We demonstrate a simple, cheap method for pore size characterization of porous media that generates a distribution of pore radii for improved flow and transport modeling. The new method for pore structure characterization utilizes recent theoretical developments in non-Newtonian fluids. Numerical evaluations and validations with synthetic porous media showed potential for obtaining a distribution of effective pore radii and their contribution to total flow only by complementing water with non-Newtonian fluids in saturated infiltration experiments. To demonstrate this ability on real sands, a series of one-dimensional column experiments was conducted with varying porous medium packings, including Accusands and a polydisperse sand/glass bead mixture. For each packing, distilled water and varying concentrations of guar and xanthan gum were injected over a range of flow rates and pressure gradients. The model-generated pore radii were compared with pore radius distributions measured by X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT), with results demonstrating good agreement between the model and μCT data. Simulations of saturated water flow and drainage curves using model-generated pore radii compared favorably to experimental data, with errors typically between 2% and 10% for single-phase flow and approaching the error of the μCT measured radius distributions for the drainage curves.

Abstract

Dual-permeability models simulate flow and transport within soils characterized by preferential (macro) and matrix (micro) pore domains, with each exhibiting distinct hydraulic properties. The lack of suitable methods for determining appropriate and physically based model parameters remains a major challenge to applying these models. Here, we present a method that characterizes dual-permeability model parameters using experimental results of saturated flows from water and a non-Newtonian fluid. We present two sub-models that solve for the effective pore sizes of micropores and macropores, with macropores represented either with cylindrical (for biological pores) or planar (for shrinkage cracks and fissures) pore geometries. The model also determines the percentage contribution (wi) of the representative macro-and micropores to water flow. We applied the model to experimental soil samples complemented with capillary tubes simulating the macropores and showed its ability to derive the bimodal pore size distributions in dual-domain soils using only two fluids. As such, we present this method of characterization of dual structures for improved modeling of nonuniform preferential flow and transport in macroporous soils.

Sparse data exist regarding low vision (LV) services referral patterns. We retrospectively examined our institution's intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) patients to determine factors influencing referral. We compared visual acuity (VA) and Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25) composite and subscale scores for referred and non-referred iAMD patients. VA was collected at time of referral or most recent visit, and VFQ-25 was taken upon enrollment into the registry. Thirty-six (15.5%) of the 232 iAMD patients were referred to LV. Referred patients were more likely to have older age, worse VA in both eyes, and lower VFQ-25 scores. Univariate analysis of VFQ-25 subscales demonstrated worse scores in general vision, near, distance, mental health, role limitations, dependency, and driving. Multivariable analysis revealed lower scores in general health, general vision, and driving. Forty-eight percent of non-referred patients had VA or VFQ-25 composite scores at least as poor as the median for referred patients. Two-thirds of patients who were not referred had no discernable obstacle to referral. Our institution refers patients with worse objective and functioning vision, but more patients may benefit from referral. Abstract

Background: Visual acuity (VA) loss has been associated with depression in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, previous studies did not incorporate subgroups of AMD when correlating VA and mental health. The goal of this study was to describe the relationship between VA and mental health questions in patients with different classifications of AMD, and to identify associations of mental health subscale scores. Methods: AMD patients classified by multi-modal imaging were recruited into an AMD registry. Habitual VA was obtained by ophthalmic technicians using the Snellen VA at distance. At enrollment, patients completed the NEI-VFQ-25, which includes 25 questions regarding the patient's visual functionality. Median with interquartile-range (IQR) scores on the mental health subscale of the VFQ were calculated by AMD classification and VA groups. Univariate and multivariable general linear models were used to estimate associations between mental health scores and variables of interest. Results: Eight hundred seventy-five patients were included in the study. Patients with bilateral geographic atrophy (GA) or bilateral GA and neovascular (NV) AMD scored lowest on the mental health subscales with a median (IQR) of 58.2 (38–88) and 59.3 (38–88). When stratified by VA, patients with a habitual VA of 20/200 or worse scored the lowest on mental health subscales scores: median of 43.8 (IQR: 31–62). Patients with a VA of 20/20 scored the highest: 87.5 (IQR: 81–94). Habitual VA of the better- and worse-seeing eye and AMD classification were significantly associated with mental health subscale scores (all p < 0.0001 in both the univariate and multivariable analysis, except the VA of the worse-seeing eye in multivariable model p = 0.027). Patients enrolled during the COVID pandemic had mental health scores that were 2.7 points lower than prior to the pandemic, but this difference was not significant in univariate (p = 0.300) or multivariable analysis (p = 0.202). Conclusion: There is a significant association between mental health questionnaire scores and AMD classification, as well as VA in both the better and worse-seeing eyes in patients with AMD. It is important for clinicians to recognize feelings of worry/ frustration in these patients, so they can be appropriately referred, screened, and treated for mental health problems. Our understanding of the pathophysiology for the development of MGD has greatly expanded in recent years, which helped increase awareness of the disease. Despite increased awareness, it is essential for eye care professionals to make a conscious effort to properly examine the meibomian glands through gland expression even for asymptomatic patients. At minimum, early management should include patient education and supportive therapy such as warm compresses, lid hygiene, and gland expression. As patients become more symptomatic and as the ocular surface becomes more affected, employing additional therapeutic management is recommended and may include oral omega-3 essential fatty acids, topical azithromycin, oral tetracycline, and topical anti-inflammatories to improve clinical signs and patient comfort. In addition to treatment of MGD, clinicians should be mindful of the comorbid conditions of MGD and simultaneously manage them in conjunction of MGD treatment. 38. Physicochemical Approaches for the Remediation of Manufactured Gas Plant Tar in Porous Media

Abstract

Tars produced as a by-product of coal and oil gasification at former manufactured gas plants (FMGPs) during the 19th and early 20th centuries were often released into the environment through poor disposal practices or leaks in holding tanks and piping. These tars are persistent contaminants, leaching polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into groundwater and posing a significant risk to human and ecological health. FMGP tars also have several properties that make them notoriously difficult to remediate. They are dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), so they can migrate to depths which make removal by excavation difficult or impossible, and their relatively high viscosities and ability to alter the wetting characteristics of porous media result in inefficient removal by traditional pump-and-treat methods. This work investigates the relationship between tar composition and properties, and explores several remediation approaches. The interfacial tension (IFT) of a set of FMGP tars was measured as a function of pH and correlated with compositional features. It was observed that IFT is a strongly decreasing function of pH, suggesting the potential use of high pH (alkaline) solutions to mobilize FMGP tar in porous media systems. Laboratory column experiments were conducted to investigate the use of alkaline solutions, alone and in combination with natural polymers (xanthan gum) and surfactants, to remediate tar-contaminated porous media. The results of these experiments indicated that alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) solutions could efficiently remove 95% of residual tar. Surfactant-polymer (SP) solutions removed an even greater fraction of residual tar, over 99%, but required a larger flushing volume to do so. These experiments also illustrated that both ASP and SP flushing significantly reduced dissolved-phase PAH concentrations, which are often the primary concern at contaminated FMGP sites.

Abstract

This experimental study investigates the use of alkaline and alkaline-polymer solutions for the mobilization of former manufactured gas plant (FMGP) tars. Tar-aqueous interfacial tensions (IFTs) and contact angles were measured, and column flushing experiments were conducted. NaOH solutions (0.01-1 wt.%) were found to significantly reduce tar-aqueous IFT. Contact angles indicated a shift to strongly water-wet, then to tar-wet conditions as NaOH concentration increased. Column experiments were conducted with flushing solutions containing 0.2, 0.35, and 0.5% NaOH, both with and without xanthan gum (XG). Between 10 and 44% of the residual tar was removed by solutions containing only NaOH, while solutions containing both NaOH and XG removed 81-93% of the tar with final tar saturations as low as 0.018. The mechanism responsible for the tar removal is likely a combination of reduced IFT, a favorable viscosity ratio, and tar bank formation. Abstract

The article presents a case study of a 68-year old female patient with hypertension, high cholesterol, fibromyalgia and a shingles episode who was rushed to the hospital following an attempt to stifle a sneeze. Combined with her hypertension, blood pressure gradient elevated across the episcleral vessels and the choriocapillaris, lead to a ruptured choroidal vessel and subsequent hemorrhage. It notes that after treatment, the majority of the blood had been reabsorbed, negating the need for further surgical intervention.
