Background: The extent to which very young children contribute to the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is unclear. We aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in daycare centres that remained open for key workers' children during a nationwide lockdown in France., Methods: Children and staff who attended one of 22 daycare centres during a nationwide lockdown in France (between March 15 and May 9, 2020) were included in this cross-sectional, multicentre, seroprevalence study. Hospital staff not occupationally exposed to patients with COVID-19, or to children, were enrolled in a comparator group. The primary outcome was SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in children, daycare centre staff, and the comparator group. The presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in capillary whole blood was measured with a rapid chromatographic immunoassay. We computed raw prevalence as the percentage of individuals with a positive IgG or IgM test, and used Bayesian smoothing to account for imperfect sensitivity and specificity of the assay. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04413968., Findings: Between June 4 and July 3, 2020, we enrolled 327 children (mean age 1·9 [SD 0·9] years; range 5 months to 4·4 years), 197 daycare centre staff (mean age 40 [12] years), and 164 adults in the comparator group (42 [12] years). Positive serological tests were observed for 14 children (raw seroprevalence 4·3%; 95% CI 2·6-7·1) and 14 daycare centre staff (7·7%; 4·2-11·6). After accounting for imperfect sensitivity and specificity of the assay, we estimated that 3·7% (95% credible interval [95% CrI] 1·3-6·8) of the children and 6·8% (3·2-11·5) of daycare centre staff had SARS-CoV-2 infection. The comparator group fared similarly to the daycare centre staff; nine participants had a positive serological test (raw seroprevalence 5·5%; 95% CI 2·9-10·1), leading to a seroprevalence of 5·0% (95% CrI 1·6-9·8) after accounting for assay characteristics. An exploratory analysis suggested that seropositive children were more likely than seronegative children to have been exposed to an adult household member with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 (six [43%] of 14 vs 19 [6%] of 307; relative risk 7·1 [95% CI 2·2-22·4])., Interpretation: According to serological test results, the proportion of young children in our sample with SARS-CoV-2 infection was low. Intrafamily transmission seemed more plausible than transmission within daycare centres. Background: The incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) peaks at 2-4 month of age and during the colder months of the year. Other risk factors such as sex, birth weight, maternal age and multiple pregnancy also seem to be shared by the other causes of death after the neonatal period., Population and Methods: A retrospective, exhaustive survey of all deaths of infants aged 28 days-one year was carried out between September 1986 to December 1987. The control group was a representative sample of the live births in France during 1989. The deaths were classified into 3 groups: group I, 1184 SIDS, group II 228 SIDS remaining unexplained after autopsy (out of 315 autopsied SIDS), and group III 83 accidental deaths. The factors studied were: sex, birth weight, maternal age, number of infants born from the pregnancy. The risk factors were measured by Odds Ratios and the variables related to mortality were introduced into a logistic model., Results: Incidence of deaths peaked between the 2nd and the 4th month of age in groups I and II while deaths were evenly distributed throughout the first year in group III. Colder months, male gender, low birthweight, multiple birth and the young age of the mother all increased the risk of death in SIDS (groups I and II) but the same factors were also linked to accidental deaths., Conclusion: The results confirm those of earlier reports and raise the question why the risk factors for accidental deaths are similar to those for explained or unexplained SIDS, except for infant age.

Since 1985, in order to understand variations and factors related to the SIDS compared with the other causes of postneonatal deaths, several epidemiological studies have been carried out in France. The main results obtained so far are presented in this paper. The national rate of SIDS in France is estimated at 1.2 per 1,000 live births. The only specific risk factor for SIDS is age (2-4 months), though birthweight, prematurity and the younger age of the mother increase the probability of dying in the same manner as for accidental causes and all other postneonatal deaths. In addition we found discrepancies in the SIDS rates of babies according to the month of birth. The total probability of dying during the postneonatal period is lower in babies born during spring than in babies born during late summer or autumn. No significant differences were found in the DTP IPV immunization rates between SIDS and other causes of death or between SIDS and living controls.

A stagnation in postneonatal mortality (28 days-1 year) is reported in France as in other similar countries. More than fifty per cent of these deaths are registered under the sudden infant death syndrome, a cause which is classified in the symptoms and ill-defined conditions chapter of the International Classification of Diseases. To establish the actual rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) it was necessary to carry out a specific retrospective survey. All postneonatal deaths (3917) registered in France from September 1986 to December 1987 were studied by means of questionnaires sent to the certifying doctor and to the families. The sudden infant death rate is estimated at 1.2 per 1,000 and the risk factors of the total postneonatal deaths are birthweight, prematurity, transfer into neonatal care unit, and age of the mother.

This paper reports the findings of a study of head trauma conducted over a one-year period within a defined region with a population of 2.7 million (Aquitaine, France). It includes cases resulting in death prior to hospitalization or requiring hospitalization. During the one-year period, 391 deaths and 8549 hospital admissions due to head trauma occurred, yielding an annual estimate of 8940 head-injured people. The immediate case-fatality rate was 4.4%. Among non-fatal cases, 80% were mild, 11% moderate and 9% severe. The overall annual incidence was 281/100,000 in both sexes (384 and 185/100,000 in males and females respectively). The annual death rate was 22/100,000 (33 and 12, respectively). Patterns of incidence by age and sex were in general agreement with earlier studies. The main causes of head trauma were traffic accidents (60%) and falls (33%). One-third of hospitalized patients had no injury other than the head trauma. The most frequently associated injuries were those involving extremities, whereas the most severe were those involving the abdomen. The Injury Severity Score (ISS) ranged from 4 to 66, with a mean of 9 and a median of 5. At the eighth day following injury, 25% of hospital-treated patients were still hospitalized and 2% had died. The outcome correlated well with the ISS.
