14. Spectral induced polarization imaging to monitor seasonal and annual dynamics of frozen ground at a mountain permafrost site in the Italian Alps.

Abstract

We investigate the application of spectral induced polarization (SIP) monitoring to understand seasonal and annual variations in the freeze–thaw processes in permafrost by examining the frequency dependence of subsurface electrical properties. We installed a permanent SIP monitoring profile at a high-mountain permafrost site in the Italian Alps in 2019 and collected SIP data in the frequency range between 0.1–75 Hz over 3 years. The SIP imaging results were interpreted in conjunction with complementary seismic and borehole data sets. In particular, we investigated the phase frequency effect (ϕFE), i.e., the change in the resistivity phase with frequency. We observe that this parameter (ϕFE) is strongly sensitive to temperature changes and might be used as a proxy to delineate spatial and temporal changes in the ice content in the subsurface, providing information not accessible through electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) or single-frequency IP measurements. Temporal changes in ϕFE are validated through laboratory SIP measurements on samples from the site in controlled freeze–thaw experiments. We demonstrate that SIP is capable of resolving temporal changes in the thermal state and the ice / water ratio associated with seasonal freeze–thaw processes. We investigate the consistency between the ϕFE observed in field data and groundwater and ice content estimates derived from petrophysical modeling of ERT and seismic data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Modeling the Link Between Air Convection and the Occurrence of Short‐Term Permafrost in a Low‐Altitude Cold Talus Slope.

Abstract

We extend a numerical modeling approach developed to explicitly model convective heat transfer in periglacial landforms to represent the ground thermal regime of low‐altitude talus slopes. Our model solves for heat conduction and accounts explicitly for air convection adopting a Darcy term with a Boussinesq approximation for air circulation in the porous ground. Numerical model experiments for the low‐altitude talus slope Dreveneuse, Switzerland, confirm that air convection is the key to forming and maintaining ground ice. In the model, the porous talus slope is underlain by a layer of water‐bearing morainic material. In years, where the gradient between air and talus temperature is sufficiently large to result in increased convection and therefore cooling, ground ice forms due to air convection within the porous material and lasts for more than a year. It is only by considering convection that the model is able to represent the occurrences of ground ice, in accordance with temperature observations on‐site. These findings are important, as they confirm that ground ice can be formed and maintained in landforms with a mean annual air temperature > 0°C if ground air convection is present combined with the presence of water. Abstract

Viscous-flow features in perennially frozen talus/debris called rock glaciers are being systematically inventoried as part of the global climate-related monitoring of mountain permafrost. In order to avoid duplication and confusion, guidelines were developed by the International Permafrost Association to discriminate between the permafrost-related landform "rock glacier" and the glacier-related landform "debris-covered glacier". In two regions covered by detailed field measurements, the corresponding data- and physics-based concepts are tested and shown to be adequate. Key physical aspects which cause the striking morphological and dynamic differences between the two phenomena/landforms concern the following: tight mechanical coupling of the surface material to the frozen rock–ice mixture in the case of rock glaciers, contrasting with essential non-coupling of debris to the glaciers they cover; talus-type advancing fronts of rock glaciers exposing fresh debris material from inside the moving frozen bodies, as opposed to massive surface ice exposed by increasingly rare advancing fronts of debris-covered glaciers; and increasing creep rates and continued advance of rock glaciers as convex landforms with structured surfaces versus predominant slowing down and disintegration of debris-covered glaciers as often concave landforms with primarily chaotic surface structure. Where debris-covered surface ice is or has recently been in contact with thermally controlled subsurface ice in permafrost, complex conditions and interactions can develop morphologies beyond simple either–or-type landform classification. In such cases, the remains of buried surface ice mostly tend to be smaller than the lower size limit of "glaciers" as the term is applied in glacier inventories and to be far thinner than the permafrost in which they are embedded. 22. Reliability of resistivity quantification for shallow subsurface water processes

Abstract

The reliability of surface-based electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) for quantifying resistivities for shallow subsurface water processes is analysed. A method comprising numerical simulations of water movement in soil and forward-inverse modeling of ERT surveys for two synthetic data sets is presented. Resistivity contrast, e.g. by changing water content, is shown to have large influence on the resistivity quantification. An ensemble and clustering approach is introduced in which ensembles of 50 different inversion models for one data set are created by randomly varying the parameters for a regularisation based inversion routine. The ensemble members are sorted into five clusters of similar models and the mean model for each cluster is computed. Distinguishing persisting features in the mean models from singular artifacts in individual tomograms can improve the interpretation of inversion results. Especially in the presence of large resistivity contrasts in high sensitivity areas, the quantification of resistivities can be unreliable. The ensemble approach shows that this is an inherent problem present for all models inverted with the regularisation based routine. Abstract

Repeated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys can substantially advance the understanding of spatial and temporal freeze-thaw dynamics in remote regions, such as Antarctica, where the evolution of permafrost has been poorly investigated. To enable the time-lapse ERT surveys in Antarctica, however, an automated ERT (A-ERT) system is required, as regular site visits are not feasible. In this context, we developed a robust A-ERT prototype and installed it in the Crater Lake CALM-S site at Deception Island, Antarctica to collect quasi-continuous ERT measurements. To efficiently process a large number of obtained A-ERT datasets, we developed an automated data processing workflow to efficiently filter and invert the A-ERT datasets and extract the key information required for a detailed investigation of permafrost and active layer dynamics. In this paper, we report on the results of two complete year-round A-ERT datasets collected in 2010 and 2019 at Crater Lake CALM-S site and compare them with available climate and borehole data. The A-ERT profile has a length of 9.5 m with an electrode spacing of 0.5 m, enabling a maximum investigation depth of approximately 2 m. Our detailed investigation of the A-ERT data and inverted modeling results shows that the A-ERT system can detect the active-layer freezing and thawing events with very high temporal resolution. The resistivity of the permafrost zone in 2019 is very similar to the values found in 2010, suggesting the stability of the permafrost over almost one decade at this site. The evolution of thaw depth exhibits also a similar pattern in both years, with the active layer thickness fluctuating between 0.20–0.35 m. However, a slight thinning of the active layer is evident in early 2019, compared to the equivalent period in 2010. These findings show that A-ERT, combined with the new processing workflow that we developed, is an efficient tool for studying permafrost and active layer dynamics with very high resolution and minimal environmental disturbance. The ability of the A-ERT setup to monitor the real-time progression of thaw depth, and to detect brief surficial refreezing and thawing of the active layer reveals the significance of the automatic ERT monitoring system to record continuous resistivity changes. This shows that the A-ERT setup described in this paper can be a significant addition to the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) and the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) networks to further investigate the impact of fast-changing climate and extreme meteorological events on the upper soil horizons and work towards establishing an early warning system for the consequences of climate change. Abstract

Ongoing global warming intensifies the degradation of permafrost. Permafrost thawing impacts landform evolution, reduces freshwater resources, enhances the potential of natural hazards and thus has significant socio-economic impacts. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been widely used to map the ice-containing permafrost by its resistivity contrast compared to the surrounding unfrozen medium. This study aims to reveal the effects of ongoing climate warming on mountain permafrost by repeating historical ERT and analyzing the temporal changes in the resistivity distribution. In order to facilitate the measurements, we introduce and discuss the employment of textile electrodes. These newly developed electrodes significantly reduce working effort, are easy to deploy on blocky surfaces and yield sufficiently low contact resistances. We analyze permafrost evolution on three periglacial landforms (two rock glaciers and one talus slope) in the Swiss and Austrian Alps by repeating historical surveys after 10, 12 and 16 years, respectively. The resistivity values have been significantly reduced in ice-poor permafrost landforms at all study sites. Interestingly, resistivity values related to ice-rich permafrost in the studied active rock glacier partly increased during the studied time period. To explain this apparently counterintuitive (in view of increased resistivity) observation, geomorphological circumstances, such as the relief and increased creep velocity of the active rock glacier, are discussed by using additional remote sensing data. The present study highlights ice-poor permafrost degradation in the Alps resulting from ever-accelerating global warming.

28. Discriminating viscous creep features (rock glaciers) in mountain permafrost from debris-covered glaciers – a commented test at the Gruben and Yerba Loca sites, Swiss Alps and Chilean Andes

Abstract

Viscous flow features in perennially frozen talus/debris called rock glaciers are being systematically inventoried as part of global climate-related monitoring of mountain permafrost. In order to avoid duplication and confusion, guidelines were developed by the International Permafrost Association for discriminating between the permafrost-related landform “rock glacier” and the glacier-related landform “debris-covered glacier”. In two regions covered by detailed field measurements, the corresponding data- and physics-based concepts are tested and shown to be adequate. Key physical aspects, which cause the striking morphological and dynamic difference between the two phenomena/landforms concern: • tight mechanical coupling of the surface material to the frozen rock-ice mixture in the case of rock glaciers as contrasting with essential non-coupling of debris to glaciers they cover; • talus-type advancing fronts of rock glaciers exposing fresh debris material from inside the moving frozen bodies as opposed to massive surface ice exposed by advancing fronts of debris-covered glaciers; and • increasing creep rates and continued advance of rock glaciers as convex landforms with structured surfaces versus predominant slowing down and disintegration of debris-covered glaciers as concave landforms with primarily chaotic surface structure. Where debris-covered surface ice is, or has recently been, in contact with thermally-controlled subsurface ice in permafrost, complex conditions and interactions can develop morphologies beyond simple “either-or”-type landform classification. In such cases, remains of buried surface ice mostly tend to be smaller than the lower size limit of “glaciers” as applied in glacier inventories, and to be far thinner than the permafrost in which they are embedded.

Abstract

Background: Pulmonary vein (PV) reconnection is the major cause of atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). The probability of reconnection is higher if the primary lesion is not sufficiently effective, which can be unmasked with an adenosine provocation test (APT). High-power short-duration radiofrequency energy (HPSD) guided with ablation index (AI) and the third generation of the visually guided laser balloon (VGLB) are new methods for PVI. Methods: A total of 70 participants (35 in each group) who underwent a PVI with either AI-guided HPSD (50 W; AI 500 for the anterior and 400 for the posterior wall, respectively) or VGLB ablation were included in this observational pilot trial. Twenty minutes after each PVI, an APT was performed. The primary endpoint was the event-free survival from AF after three years. Results: A total of 137 (100%) PVs in the HPSD arm and 131 PVs (98.5%) in the VGLB arm were initially successfully isolated (p = 0.24). The overall procedure duration was similar in both arms (155 ± 39 in HPSD vs. 175 ± 58 min in VGLB, p = 0.191). Fluoroscopy time, left atrial dwelling time and duration from the first to the last ablation were longer in the VGLB arm (23 ± 8 vs. 12 ± 3 min, p < 0.001; 157 (111–185) vs. 134 (104–154) min, p = 0.049; 92(59–108) vs. 72 (43–85) min, p = 0.010). A total of 127 (93%) in the HPSD arm and 126 (95%) PVs in the VGLB arm remained isolated after APT (p = 0.34). The primary endpoint was met 1107 ± 68 days after ablation in 71% vs. 66% in the VGLB and HPSD arms, respectively (p = 0.65). Conclusions: HPSD and VGLB did not differ with respect to long-term outcome of PVI. A large, randomized study should be conducted to compare clinical outcomes with respect to these new ablation techniques.

Abstract

We investigate the application of spectral induced polarization (SIP) monitoring to understand seasonal and annual variations of freezing and thawing processes in permafrost, in particular with regard to the frequency-dependence of the subsurface electrical properties. We installed a permanent SIP monitoring profile at a high mountain permafrost site in the Italian Alps in 2019 and collected SIP data in the frequency range between 0.1–75 Hz over 3 years. Complementary seismic data were acquired, which, together with borehole data, were used to aid interpretation of the SIP imaging results. In particular, we investigated the phase frequency effect (ϕFE), i.e., the change of resistivity phase with frequency. We observe that this parameter (ϕFE) is strongly sensitive to temperature changes and might be used as a proxy to delineate spatial and temporal changes of ice content in the subsurface, providing information not accessible through electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) or single-frequency IP measurements. Temporal changes in ϕFE are validated through laboratory SIP measurements on samples from the site in controlled freeze-thaw experiments. We demonstrate that SIP is capable of resolving temporal changes in the thermal state and the ice/water ratio associated with seasonal freeze-thaw processes. We investigate the consistency between the ϕFE observed in field data and ground water and ice content estimates derived from petrophysical modelling of ERT and seismic data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
