2. Synchrotron X-ray studies of ultra-high-quality crystalline YBa2Cu3O7-delta in Sub-micron thick films

Abstract

Synchrotron radiation was utilized in the high-resolution x-ray scattering used to study the crystal structure of YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrate. Findings show that the thin films consist of two major components, namely mosaic aligned grains and an ultra-high-quality single-crystal film. Moreover, results also indicate that the single-crystal film occupies 95% of the film volume.

Abstract

High resolution X-ray scattering measurements of dc magnetron sputtered epitaxial GdBaCuO thin films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 samples reveal that the films are a single crystal. c- and a-axes oriented thin films are observed on LaAlO3 samples. Interfacial strains are detected between relative orientations, and no low-temperature structural transitions are detected.

7. Crystal structure and cation disorder in bulk Cu2ZnSnS4 using neutron diffraction and X-ray anomalous scattering

Abstract

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is a promising material for the absorber layer in sustainable thin film photovoltaic cells, but its best efficiencies are currently limited by low open-circuit voltages, thought to be due to defects such as disorder between the copper and zinc lattice sites. Samples of CZTS with stoichiometric and Cu-poor, Zn-rich (optimally doped for device application) starting compositions were fabricated by solid state reaction and their crystal structures were investigated using high-resolution neutron diffraction and anomalous scattering synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Both samples were found to be exclusively kesterite with significant mixing of Cu and Zn on the 2a, 2c, and 2d Wyckoff sites but negligible defect presence on the Sn 2b or S 8g sites. Importantly, the occupancies of the 2a and 2c sites were found to be identical, meaning the kesterite symmetry is preserved

Abstract

A sequential phase transition is described by using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray scattering in a single crystal [Nd.sub.1/2][Sr.sub.1/]Mn[O.sub.3]. The sequent transition is studied by the formation of different magnetic domains at different temperature ranges as that seen by neutron powder diffraction.

Abstract

Magnetite, Fe3 O4, displays a highly complex low-temperature crystal structure that may be charge and orbitally ordered. Many of the recent experimental claims of such ordering rely on resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the oxygen K and iron L edges. We have reexamined this system and undertaken soft x-ray diffraction experiments on a high-quality single crystal. Contrary to previous claims in the literature, we show that the intensity observed at the Bragg forbidden (00 1 2) c reflection can be explained purely in terms of the low-temperature structural displacements around the resonant atoms. This does not necessarily mean that magnetite is not charge or orbitally ordered but rather that the present sensitivity of resonant soft x-ray experiments does not allow conclusive demonstration of such ordering.

24. Advances in the understanding of multiferroics through soft X-ray diffraction

Abstract

The magneto-electric multiferroic TbMn2O5has a complex magnetic structure in three different magnetically ordered phases. We have determined the nature of the induced magnetic order on the oxygen sites in the commensurate magnetic phase through full linear X-ray polarisation analysis at the oxygen Kedge. This has been achieved rotating the linear polarisation of the incident beam at the source, and using multilayers to analyse the polarisation state of the scattered X-ray beam. We have confirmed that the anisotropy of the magnetic scattering at the oxygen edge is consistent with the anisotropy of the manganese magnetic structure.
