Abstract

We describe the in-orbit performance of the soft X-ray imaging system consisting of the Soft X-ray Telescope and the Soft X-ray Imager aboard Hitomi. Verification and calibration of imaging and spectroscopic performance are carried out making the best use of the limited data of less than three weeks. Basic performance including a large field of view of 38'x38' is verified with the first light image of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. Amongst the small number of observed targets, the on-minus-off pulse image for the out-of-time events of the Crab pulsar enables us to measure a half power diameter of the telescope as about 1.3'. The average energy resolution measured with the onboard calibration source events at 5.89 keV is 179 pm 3 eV in full width at half maximum. Light leak and cross talk issues affected the effective exposure time and the effective area, respectively, because all the observations were performed before optimizing an observation schedule and parameters for the dark level calculation. Screening the data affected by these two issues, we measure the background level to be 5.6x10^{-6} counts s^{-1} arcmin^{-2} cm^{-2} in the energy band of 5-12 keV, which is seven times lower than that of the Suzaku XIS-BI., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ. 17 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) is one of the scientific instruments carried on the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) satellite launched on 2000 October 9. HETE-2 is an international mission consisting of a small satellite dedicated to provide broad-band observations and accurate localizations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). A unique feature of this mission is its capability to determine and transmit GRB coordinates in almost real-time through the burst alert network. The WXM consists of three elements: four identical Xe-filled one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counters, two sets of one-dimensional coded apertures, and the main electronics. The WXM counters are sensitive to X-rays between 2 keV and 25 keV within a field-of-view of about 1.5 sr, with a total detector area of about 350 cm$^2$. The in-flight triggering and localization capability can produce a real-time GRB location of several to 30 arcmin accuracy, with a limiting sensitivity of $10^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2}$. Abstract

We have fabricated platinum/carbon (Pt/C) multilayer reflectors with 2d spacings between 50 and 200 [angstrom], using an electron-beam evaporator. We investigated the effects of 2d values, the number of layer pairs, substrate temperature, coatings, and the long-term stability on the reflectivity performance by using characteristic x rays and monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the 0.8-8-keV region. In this study we show that Pt/C multilayers with 10 - 20 layer pairs exhibit high and stable soft-x-ray reflectivity. The interfacial roughness was measured in the range of 5 [angstrom] and becomes lower for structures deposited at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. Coating these reflectors with a 100-[angstrom]-thick platinum layer increased the grazing angle reflectivity without significantly lowering the Bragg peak reflectivity. Abstract

© 2017. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E ≈ 3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of S xvi (E ≃ 3.44 keV rest-frame) - a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A confirmation of this interesting feature has to wait for a more sensitive observation with a future calorimeter experiment.

12. A2163 - An exceptionally hot cluster of galaxies

Abstract

The X-ray spectrum of the distant galaxy cluster A2163 was measured in the energy range 1-18 keV with the Ginga satellite. A combined analysis of these data with data previously obtained with the Einstein Observatory is presented. The mean temperature and X-ray luminosity derived are exceptionally high compared to other clusters: kT = 12.9 keV, L(x) (2-10 keV) = 3.5 x 10 exp 45 ergs/s for z = 0.15, as are the gas mass (6.7 x 10 exp 14 solar mass) and binding mass (25 x 10 exp 14 solar mass). The very existence of such a cluster can provide interesting constraints on the relative distribution of 'visible' mass and dark matter, an important parameter in cold dark matter models for formation of structure in the universe.

Abstract

Observations of the cD galaxy NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster of galaxies with Ginga have detected extended X-ray emission out to a radius of more than about 360 kpc. The energy spectrum of this emission is well fitted with an optically thin thermal spectrum with kT = 1.46 +0.05/-0.21 keV with a strong iron emission line corresponding to an iron abundance of 1.1 +1.3/-0.5 times solar. The mass of the hot gas responsible for X-ray emission is nearly the same as the total stellar mass of the cluster. Therefore the presence of iron at near-solar abundance suggests that the mass of the hot gas ejected from galaxies is comparable to the total stellar mass. This result indicates that most of the hot gas in a very poor cluster is created through ejections from galaxies, rather than being primordial.

Abstract

Near-nucleus imaging observations of comet Austin (1989c1) were carried out by the Japanese CCD imaging team. Six telescopes were used to monitor the time variation of the near-nucleus images in C2, CN, H2O, and Na continuum in the optical region, and in J, H, and K bands in the near-IR region. A featureless, round shape of the comet was revealed in all images. Although some of the jet features are recognized by using an image enhancement technique, the azimuthal difference of the intensity distribution is about 10 percent. Abstract

Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and many astrophysical processes. However, knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, the mass of which is much larger than the combined mass of all the stars in the cluster, is lacking. Such knowledge would enable insights into the injection of mechanical energy by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for determining cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50-million-kelvin diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The active galactic nucleus of the central galaxy NGC 1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These bubbles probably induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas, preventing runaway radiative cooling - a process known as active galactic nucleus feedback. Here we report X-ray observations of the core of the Perseus cluster, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere in which the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164 ± 10 kilometres per second in the region 30-60 kiloparsecs from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150 ± 70 kilometres per second is found across the 60-kiloparsec image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is four per cent of the thermodynamic pressure, with large-scale shear at most doubling this estimate. Abstract

The Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) is one of the three main scientific instruments on HETE-2, and is designed to measure the light curves, spectra, and locations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and other transients in the energy range of 2-25 keV. It consists of Xe-filled 1-D position-sensitive proportional counters equipped with two 1-D coded apertures in orthogonal directions with a field of view of 40° × 40°. The sophisticated onboard processing allows the localization of GRBs in real time with ∼ 10' accuracy based on the alerts from FREGATE, the gamma-ray detector. The WXM also triggers on its own count time history with a flexible algorithm and can localize X-ray events on various time scales. Abstract

We have fabricated multilayer reflectors of molybdenum-carbon, molybdenum-silicon, and nickel-carbon for x rays of 1-200 Å with an electron beam evaporation method in ultrahigh vacuum. The multilayers were deposited on flat and figured substrates of float glass and superpolished glass with a surface roughness of 2-3 Å (rms). The thickness of a layer pair and the number of layer pairs were 30-100 Å and 10-20, respectively. The x-ray characteristics of these multilayer reflectors were evaluated in the 1.5-200 Å region with characteristic x rays (CuKα, Si-Kα, A1-Kα, and C-Kα) and monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Peak reflectivities of molybdenum-carbon were found to be 70% at Cu-Kα and 40% at Al-Kα in grazing incidence and those of molybdenum-silicon to be more than 30% in the 150-170 Å band in near-normal incidence. Abstract

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 - 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 - 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission. The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases. All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter-pulse GRPs are 22% or 80% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 - 300 keV band. The values become 25% or 110% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase. Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports. Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) ×10 -11 erg cm -2 , respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases. However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a > 0.02% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions.
