To investigate the effect of balneotherapy on body mass index, adipokine levels, sleep disturbances, and quality of life in women with morbid obesity. Fifty-four women with morbid obesity were included in the study. The body mass indexes (BMI) and waist/hip ratios (WHR) of the women were calculated. Subcutaneous fat thickness was measured using a *skinfold meter, and the percentage of adipose tissue was calculated. The *Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality, and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) was used to assess quality of life. In addition to routine biochemical tests, leptin, adipokine, visfatin from blood, and cortisol from saliva samples were studied. Participants were given 15 sessions of balneotherapy for 20 min each. After treatment, the laboratory and clinical parameters of the participants were *reevaluated. There was no statistically significant difference of BMI, WHR, and percentage of adipose tissue between before and after treatment measurements (p ˃ 0.05).There was a statistically significant improvement in PSQI and NSP scores (p ˂ 0.001). The levels of blood glucose, leptin, and visfatin were significantly decreased, and adiponectin was significantly increased after treatment (p = 0.047, p ˂ 0.001, p ˂ 0.001, and p ˂ 0.001, respectively).There was no statistically significant changes in salivary cortisol levels (p = 0.848). Patients with diabetes showed a statistically significant decrease in glucose levels after treatment (p = 0.017).There was a statistically significant decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in patients with dyslipidemia compared with pre-treatment (p = 0.018). Balneotherapy improves sleep and quality of life of women with morbid obesity. After balneotherapy, glucose, leptin, adiponectin, and visfatin levels may change positively. © 2020, ISB.

Objective The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy and local corticosteroid injection on pain, function, and nerve conduction studies in the treatment of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome. Design A total of 72 patients who were diagnosed as having carpal tunnel syndrome were included in the study. The radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy group received radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy, the local corticosteroid injection group received local corticosteroid injection, and the control group only used a resting hand splint. The patients were evaluated using a Visual Analog Scale-pain, a Visual Analog Scale-numbness, the Boston Symptom Severity Scale, the Boston Functional Status Scale, and handgrip strength tests before treatment 1 and 12 wks after the treatment. Results Both clinical and nerve conduction study parameters improved with all three groups, and this effect continued at the 12th-week follow-up of the patients. The Visual Analog Scale-pain, Visual Analog Scale-numbness, Boston Symptom Severity Scale, and Boston Functional Status Scale scores in the first week after the treatment, as well as Visual Analog Scale-pain and Boston Functional Status Scale scores in the 12th week after the treatment, were significantly lower in the local corticosteroid injection group compared with the other two groups. Tietze’s Syndrome: A Case Report Tietze syndrome (TS) is a rare inflammatory arthropathy characterized by tenderness, pain, and non-purulent swelling of the costosternal, costochondral and sternoclavicular joints. It often involves the costosternal joints and sternoclavicular jointinvolvement is rare. In this case report, we present a 72-year-old female patient suffering from pain and swelling in the right upper chest wall fo rabout 2 years. Physical examination revealed tenderness in the right sternoclavicular joint and an approximately 2x2 cm moderate swelling. Ultrasonic imaging of the swelling area revealed increased echogenicity and edema in the right sternoclavicular joint area. Laboratory findings were normal. The patient was diagnosed with TS and a local injection of a corticosteroid and local anesthetic mixture was administered. The patient’s complaints decreased significantly after the infiltration. Aging is associated with reduction in physiological and functional capacities and quality of life. Physical activity (PA) in older people is critically important in the prevention of disease, maintenance of independence and improvement of quality of life. It has been shown that increased physical activity increases functional capacity and prevents many chronic non-communicable diseases. Guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity and at least two days of musclestrengthening activities per week. Despite the highly known benefits of physical activity, the majority of older people in the world do not meet the minimum physical activity levels needed to maintain health. Any amount of exercise is better than being sedentary, even if health status prevents a person from achieving recommended goals. This study assessed the additional contribution of balneotherapy on physical therapy in subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy. Ninety patients with subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy were included. They were randomized into two equal groups. In group 1 (n = 45), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), hot pack, ultrasound treatments, and Codman’s and range of motion (ROM) exercises were performed. In group 2 (n = 45), balneotherapy was added to the treatment program. In both groups, shoulder active ROM and handgrip strength were measured. Pain was evaluated using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (rest, sleep, movement); functional assessment and quality of life were measured respectively with the Shortened Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (QuickDASH), and the Short Form-36 health survey (SF 36) form. All measurements were repeated before and after 15 treatment sessions. There were statistically significant differences between the before and after assessment parameters in group 1 (all p < 0.05), but not for SF-36 General Health Perceptions, SF-36 Mental Health sub-parameters, and handgrip strengths. However, there were statistically significant differences between all the evaluation before and after the treatment in group 2 (all p < 0.05). When the two groups were compared in terms of alpha gains, statistically significant differences were observed in favor of group 2 in all measurements (all p < 0.05) except for SF-36 Emotional Role Difficulty and SF-36 Mental Health sub-parameters. This study shows that the addition of balneotherapy to physical therapy for subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy can make additional contributions to shoulder ROM, pain, handgrip strength, functional status, and quality of life.

Amaç: Tıbbi sekreterlerde sırt ve/veya bel ağrısı sık görülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, sırt veya bel ağrısı olan sekreterler ile olmayan sekreterlerin omurga eğriliği, omurga hareketliliği, disabilite ve yaşam kalitesi düzeylerini karşılaştırmaktır. Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmaya aynı hastanede çalışan 111 tıbbi sekreter dahil edildi. Tıbbi sekreterler sırt ağrısı olan ve olmayan olarak iki gruba; bel ağrısı olan ve olmayan olarak diğer iki gruba ayrıldılar. Omurganın sagittal düzlemdeki şekli ve hareketliliği “Spinal Mouse™” isimli non-invaziv bir alet kullanılarak ölçüldü. Ölçümler ayakta dururken ve oturma pozisyonunda ayrı ayrı tekrarlandı. Ağrı şiddeti Vizüel Analog Skala (VAS) ile; fonksiyonel durum Oswestry Disabilite Ölçeği (ODÖ) ile; yaşam kalitesi ise Notthigham Sağlık Profili (NSP) kullanılarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya dahil edilen tıbbi sekreterlerin (75 kadın/36 erkek) yaş ortalaması 30.73±5.74 yıl idi. Sırt ağrısı olan 51 sekreterin VAS ortalaması 5.47±2.67; bel ağrısı olan 63 sekreterin VAS ortalaması 5.52±2.66 idi. Sırt ağrısı olan sekreterlerin oturur pozisyonda ve ayakta iken ölçülen torakal kifoz açısı, sırt ağrısı olmayan sekreterlere göre daha yüksekti (p˂0.032, p˂0.001). Her iki grup arasında oturur pozisyonda ve ayakta iken ölçülen torakal vertebra hareketliliği açısından anlamlı fark yoktu. İki grup arasında NSP-total, NSP-enerji, NSP-ağrı, NSP-duygusal reaksiyonlar ve NSP-fiziksel hareketlilik alt grupları arasında anlamlı fark vardı (p˂0.001, p=0.001, p˂0.001, p=0.001, p=0.001). Bel ağrısı olan sekreterlerin ayakta duruşta ölçülen lomber lordoz açısı, bel ağrısı olmayanlara göre daha düşüktü (p˂0.001). Her iki grup arasında oturur pozisyonda iken ölçülen lomber lordoz açısı ile oturur pozisyonda ve ayakta iken ölçülen lomber vertebra hareketliliği açısından anlamlı fark yoktu. İki grup arasında ODÖ, NSP-total, NSP-enerji, NSP-ağrı ve NSP-fiziksel hareketlilik alt grupları arasında anlamlı fark vardı (p˂0.001, p=0.025, p=0.042, p=0.039, p=0.019). Sonuç: Spinal Mouse™ kullanılarak yapılan ölçümlerde omurga hareketliliğinde fark olmamasına rağmen; sırt ağrısı olan sekretelerde torakal omurgada kifoz artışı, bel ağrısı olanlarda da lomber omurgada lordoz azalması olduğu görülmüştür. Sırt ve bel ağrısının varlığı fonksiyonel durumu ve yaşam kalitesini olumsuz etkilemektedir.

Objective. It has been reported that some autoimmune diseases are associated with dry eye syndrome. There are limited studies that relates dry eye syndrome in patients with Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between dry eye syndrome in patients with FMF comparing with healthy controls. Methods. Prospective cross-sectional study was carried out in departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation and ophthalmology clinics in a tertiary public institution with a sample of 46 participants including 23 FMF patients and 23 healthy controls. Detailed eye examination was performed in all cases and indicators of xerophthalmia were assessed by Schirmer-I test, tear break-up time (TBUT) and ocular surface disease index (OSDI). In patient group; results of FMF gene analysis, acute phase reactants, concomitant diseases and number of FMF attacks were noted. Results. The average Schirmer-I test results for right-eye were recorded as 14.74±8.38 for the FMF group and 13.09±10.54 for the healthy group; the TBUT scores were 14.69±5.32 in FMF group and 15±6.45 in the healthy group; and OSDI scores were 9.04±2.75 and 10.86±1.77 in the FMF group and the healthy control, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between FMF and control groups in terms of Schirmer-I, TBUT, and OSDI scores (all p＞0.05). No correlation was identified between acute phase reactants and the OSDI, TBUT and Schirmer-I tests for right-eye (all p＞0.05). Conclusion. This study identified no correlation between dry eye and FMF. Ocular pathology is rare and infrequently reported in FMF. (J Rheum Dis 2020;27:270-276)

Objectives This study aims to evaluate whether there was a difference between oxidative stress index (OSI), total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) values between patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and healthy controls, and to show the effect of balneotherapy on clinical conditions such as pain, depression, and quality of life in patients with FMS and oxidative stress. Patients and methods Thirty-five females (mean age 39.9±5.8 years; range, 18 to 50 years) with fibromyalgia and 35 healthy females (mean age 37.9±6.6 years; range, 18 to 50 years) were included in the study. The TAS, TOS, and OSI of patients with FMS and healthy controls were measured. Disease severity was evaluated using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, pain levels were evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS), mood was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and quality of life was evaluated using the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Patients with FMS were given 15 sessions of balneotherapy. After treatment, the laboratory and clinical parameters of the patients were reevaluated. Objectives: To translate and make the cross-cultural adaptation of the PASS into the Turkish language and evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version (PASS-Turk). Methods: Sixty patients with stroke who had survived the three-week acute period were included in the study. The first researcher applied the scale to the participants twice with 5-day intervals. The second researcher applied the scale once at the same time with the first researcher. The reliability of PASS-Turk and its subsections was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In addition, item-total correlation and test-retest reliability were calculated. The interobserver agreement was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient. The construct validity of PASS-Turk was assessed using Pearson's product-moment correlation and principal component analyses. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and motor subscale of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) were used for validity. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the PASS-Turk scale were 0.903 for the subsection of "maintaining posture," 0.940 for the subsection of "changing a posture," and 0.953 for the total PASS-Turk scale. The first and second researcher evaluations were perfectly consistent with each other in terms of PASS-Turk total scores (ICC = 0.999, 95% CI: 0.998-0.999, and p < .001). A strong positive correlation was found between PASS-Turk and BBS and the motor subscale of FIM. Conclusion: PASS-Turk is a valid and reliable scale for the evaluation of posture and balance of patients with stroke.

WOS: 000481525600009 PubMed ID: 30920398 Objective The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of steroid injection and kinesio taping (KT) in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis. Design A total number of 84 patients were randomized into three groups. Group 1 was given steroid injection, group 2 received KT, and group 3 received both. Pain was measured using a visual analog scale, functional status was measured using a quick form of the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, pain-free grip strength was measured using a dynamometer, and the pressure pain threshold was measured using an algometer. All evaluations were performed before treatment and at the third and twelfth weeks after the treatment. Results Twenty-eight patients were included in each group. A statistically significant difference was found between the pretreatment and posttreatment evaluations of all groups in the third and twelfth weeks after treatment. When group 1 and group 2 were compared, there was a significant difference only in pain-free grip strength measured in the twelfth week. The results of treatment in group 3 patients were significantly better in almost all evaluation parameters compared with the other groups. Conclusion In the treatment of lateral epicondylitis, KT alone was found to be as effective as steroid injection alone. However, co-administration of steroid injection and KT is more effective compared with each treatment alone.

WOS: 000459350500006 Objective: To determine the demographic characteristics, disability ratios, and disability distribution of geriatric patients who applied to an educational research hospital in the rural region to receive a health board report in order to benefit from the disability rights. Materials and Methods: The hospital archive was searched and the records between 01/01/2016 and 31/12/2016 were examined. The demographic characteristics of the patients, whether they were "severely disabled" or not, the number of patients with disabilities according to organ systems were determined and the disability ratios were calculated based on the "Regulation on Disability Criterion, Classification and Health Board Reports for Disability". A list of diseases constituting the rate of disability was established and its numbers were determined. Results: Among the 699 geriatric patients who referred to the health board, 426 (60.9%) were female and 273 (39.1%) were male. The mean age of the patients was 77.62 +/- 7.74 years (minimum: 65, maximum: 104) (female: 78.07 +/- 7.54, male: 76.93 +/- 8.02), the mean disability ratio was 79.96 +/- 17.79% (10-100). The average disability ratio of females was 79.66 +/- 17.61% and the average disability ratio of males were 80.41 +/- 18.24%. There was no statistically significant difference between the male and female groups in terms of the mean disability ratio (p=0.239). Of the 202 (28.9%) patients who were considered to be severely disabled, 123 were female (60.9%) and 79 were male (39.1%). There was no statistically significant difference between male and female groups in severely disabled ratios (p=0.457). The first three organ systems constituting disability ratio in patients were the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, and the visual system. The number of patients with disabilities in the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system was higher in women, but there was no statistically significant difference between the disability percentages of these systems. Conclusion: The highest rate of disability has been seen in the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and visual system in geriatric patients. In the practice of routine geriatric outpatient clinics, the pathologies of these organ systems should be evaluated in more detail and managed before creating disability.

WOS: 000423911100016 Sprengel deformity (SD), also known as congenital high scapula, is a rare congenital deformity of one or both scapulae that appears at birth. It is the most common congenital deformity of the shoulder. This condition occurs due to the failure of the scapula to descend during intrauterine development. SD often appears randomly, but familial cases have also been described. In addition to the aesthetic problem due to SD, the main problem is the limitation of the shoulder and cervical spine joints movement. Conditions such as Klippel-Feil syndrome, congenital scoliosis, kidney diseases, and diastemetomiyelia are frequently associated with this disease. In this report, we present the rehabilitation results of an 11-year-old girl who was operated for correction of SD.

Amaç: Lumbosakral transizyonel vertebra (LSTV) ve spina bifida okülta (SBO) lumbosacral omurgada sıklıkla görülür. Lomber disk herniasyonu (LDH) ve / veya bel ağrısı ile ilişkisinin varlığı mevcut literatürde tartışılmıştır ancak bir fikir birliği yoktur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, kronik bel ağrısı olan genç hastalarda LSTV ve SBO sıklığı ile LDH sıklığı arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmektir.Çalışma tasarımı: Kesitsel.Gereç ve Yöntemler: 20 - 40 yaş arası bel ağrısı olan ve ağrısı 12 haftadan uzun süre devam eden toplam 1094 hasta çalışmaya alındı. Çalışmaya katılan tüm hastalar standart pelvis grafisi ve lomber vertebra manyetik rezonans görüntülemesi ile değerlendirildi. Ağrının şiddeti görsel analog skala ile ve bel ağrısının günlük yaşam aktivitelerine etkisi Oswestry dizabilite indeksi ile ölçülmüştür. WOS: 000486455600011 Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the vitamin D level in patients with RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and association with clinic and laboratory parameters and quality of life. Material and Method: Out of 111 patients with RA and 107 healthy controls who were admitted to Ahi Evran University Training and Research Hospital were included in this study. Patients underwent clinical, laboratory, functional, and quality of life examination. Laboratory tests used for patient evaluations included complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein level (CRP). Disease activity was calculated by DAS28 (Disease Activity Score) and functional and quality of life was examined by RAQoL (Rheumatoid Arthritis Quality of Life), HAQ (Health Assessment Questionnaire). Larsen score was calculated to assess the radiographic damage. Results: There was no significant difference between the patient and control groups regarding age, sex and vitamin D level (p > 0.05). There were no correlation between vitamin D and Larsen score, RAQoL, HAQ, ESR, and CRP (p > 0,05). We found negative correlation between DAS28 (Disease Activity Score) and vitamin D (r = -0,416, p = 0,014). We found negative correlation between morning stiffness and vitamin D (r = -0,454, p = 0,007). Patients with RA were divided into two groups with D vitamin deficiency (0-19 ng/mL) and vitamin D (> 20 ng/mL). There was a negative correlation with morning stiffness in the group with vitamin D deficiency (r = -0,454, p = 0,007). There was a negative correlation between DAS28 score and vitamin D deficiency (r = -0.416, p = 0.014). Discussion: This study presents a negative correlation between serum vitamin D level and DAS28. Since vitamin D has autoimmune roles, deficiency or inadequacy can cause flaring in patients with RA. In the light of these findings, we recommend vitamin D supplementation.

Amaç: Ultrason elastografi (UE), dokuların mekanik özelliklerini belirlemek için son zamanlarda geliştirilen bir yöntemdir. Bu çalışmada trapeziusun üst liflerindeki aktif miyofasyal tetik noktaları (MTrP) olan hastaların tedavi öncesi ve sonrası monitorizasyonunda aksiyel-strain UE'nin yararlılığını değerlendirmeyi amaçladık.Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya miyofasiyal ağrı sendromlu 49 hasta (66 MTrP) dahil edildi. Hastalar iki tedavi grubuna, grup 1 (germe egzersizleri ile tetiknokta enjeksiyonu) ve grup 2 (tetik noktaenjeksiyonu) olarak randomize edildi. Gruplar tedaviden önce, 2 ve 14 gün sonra UE ile, ayrıca dizabilite, ağrı ve basınç ağrı eşiği (PPT) açısından değerlendirildi.Bulgular: Her iki grupta tüm klinik parametreler, başlangıçta, tedavi sonrası 2 ve 14 gün sonra gerinim oranı (Strain ratio –SR) değeri ile kuvvetle ilişkiliydi. Ayrıca Grup 1, tedaviden sonraki 14 gün içinde grup 2'den daha iyi skorlara sahip olsa da her iki grupta dizabilite, ağrı ve tedavi sonrası PPT skorları açısından anlamlı iyileşmeler tespit edildi.Sonuç: Çalışmamızda üst trapezius liflerinde MTrPs için SR değerlerinin başlangıçta ve tedavi sonrası klinik parametrelerle korele olduğu gösterilmiştir. Bu sonuçlara göre, aktif MTrPs 'li hastalarda değerlendirme ve iyileşmeyi izlemek için noninvaziv ve yarı-kantitatif bir yöntem olan aksiyel strain UE yararlı bir yöntem olabilir., Purpose: Ultrasound elastography (UE) is a recently developed technique and is used to determine the mechanical properties of tissues. We aimed to assess the usefulness of axial-strain UE for pre and post treatment evaluation of patients with active myofascial triggerpoints (MTrPs) of the upper trapezius.Materials and Methods: The study included 49 patients (66 MTrPs) with myofascial pain syndrome. Patients were randomized into two treatment groups, group 1 (trigger point injection with stretching exercises) and group 2 (trigger point injection). The groups were evaluated with UE before, 2 and 14 days post-treatment. Disability, pain, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) were also assessed. Results: All clinical parameters were strongly correlated with strain ratio (SR) value at baseline, 2 and 14 days post-treatment. Both groups demonstrated significant improvements with respect to Neck Pain and Disability Scale , VAS, and PPT scores post-treatment. However, group 1 had better scores than group 2 in 14 days post-treatment. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that SR values for MTrPs in the upper trapezius correlated with clinical parameters at baseline and after treatment. According to these results, axial-strain UE, which is non-invasive and semiquantitative method may be usefull to evaluation and monitor improvement in patients with active MTrPs.

[Purpose] To evaluate the short-term effects of kinesio tape on joint position sense, isokinetic measurements, kinesiophobia, symptoms, and functional limitations in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 90 patients (112 knees) with patellofemoral pain syndrome were randomized into a kinesio tape group (n=45) or placebo kinesio tape group (n=45). Baseline isokinetic quadriceps muscle tests and measurements of joint position sense were performed in both groups. Pain was measured with a Visual Analog Scale, kinesiophobia with the Tampa kinesiophobia scale, and symptoms and functional limitations with the Kujala pain scale. Measurements were repeated 2 days after kinesio tape application. [Results] No differences were found between baseline isokinetic muscle measurements and those taken 2 days after application. However, significant improvements were observed in the kinesio tape group, with regard to joint position sense, pain, kinesiophobia, symptoms, and functional limitations after treatment. Examination of the differences between pre- and post-treatment values in both groups revealed that the kinesio tape group demonstrated greater improvements compared to the placebo kinesio tape group. [Conclusion] Although short-term kinesio tape application did not increase hamstring muscle strength, it may have improved joint position sense, pain, kinesiophobia, symptoms, and daily limitations. © 2016 The Society of Physical Therapy Science.

In this report, two male cases with complaint of hip pain and difficulty in walking, which were diagnosed with TOH was presented by reviewing current literature.

WOS: 000409960500010 Compared to adult studies, there are a limited number of pediatric studies exploring the effects of hypercalciuria on bone mineral density. The aim of this paper was to report a case of low-energy multilevel vertebral fracture in a pediatric patient during follow-up for idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH); it was also attempted to remind clinicians that IH-induced fractures may also occur in children. A 10-year-old male child presented to our outpatient clinic with back pain after jumping off from a height of approximately 50 cm. History of the patient showed that the patient had been followed-up for idiopathic hypercalciuria for 8 years and his father had renal stones and hypercalciuria. There was no abnormality on physical examination, with an exception for tenderness and limitation of movement in lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Complete blood count and biochemical parameters were normal except for an elevated alkaline phosphatase level. Dorsal and lumbar lateral plain graphs showed compression fractures of T4, T6, T8, and L3 vertebrae, therefore, lumbar and dorsal vertebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bone mineral densitometry (BMD), and vitamin D level measurement were ordered. MRI revealed acute compression fracture and medullary edema in L3; there were also chronic osteoporotic fractures in T4, T6, and T8. BMD showed a lumbar total Z score of -2.9 and the Vitamin D level was 13.7 ng/mL (10-24 ng/mL indicates moderate deficiency). A control renal ultrasonography revealed no kidney stones or calcification. The patient was prescribed polyethylene mold thoracolumbar corset and vitamin D support at a dose not to enhance hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis. His pain was alleviated at follow-up. Considering that most of the total bone mass is acquired at childhood, identification of causative factors and taking necessary measures at an early stage may prevent future complications of IH.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the role of Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene mutations in the pathogenesis and clinical progression of disease in ankylosing spondylitis patients. Patients and methods: The study included 88 patients (60 males, 28 females; mean age 38.7±8.7 years; range 19 to 56 years) diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis according to modified New York criteria. The patients were evaluated for peripheral joint and hip joint involvement and treatment characteristics. Using multiplex/polymerase chain reaction reverse hybridization method, the presence of 12 different MEFV mutations was investigated. Results: Of 29 patients, heterozygote mutation was detected in 24 (83%), mutations in both alleles were detected in three (10%), and combined heterozygote mutations were detected in two patients (7%). Three most common mutations were M694V (11.3%), E148Q (8%), and V726A (4.5%). In the group with mutations, symptoms had started earlier than in the other group, and the number of peripheral joints involved was higher. Widespread pain scores and symptom severity scores were noted. Pain pressure thresholds of tender points and control points were measured and total myalgic score (TMS) was calculated. The anthropometric assessments and skinfold measurements of all participants were recorded. CRPS-1 is not a peripheral nerve lesion, it develops following trauma, surgical applications and central nervous system lesion. On the other hand CRPS-2 occurs after peripheral nerve lesion. In CRPS-1, a more severe effect is seen than the initiating factor. CRPS-1 is a rare clinical condition in children. VEGF is an endothelial cell-specific mitogen, and it has an essential role in the formation of new blood vessels. The newly formed vessels and infiltrating macrophages play an important role during LDH resorption. Brucellosis is a widely spread zoonosis and an important global public health problem, especially in the Mediterranean region. Brucellosis is a systemic infectious disease, and it is transmitted to humans by consumption of raw milk or its by-products as well as by contact with products of infected animals. Clinical findings differ depending on the Brucella species, the host, and the duration of illness. The diagnosis of brucellosis is made by positive culture. Since the organism is cultured on blood, the examination is made primarily on the basis of suspicion as well as the high levels of humoral antibody titer. The disease may cause various complications. The most common complications of brucellosis are osteoarticular complications, including arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis. OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the effect of acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) degeneration on orthopedic shoulder tests (OST) and to determine complementary role of ACJ injections in the treatment of subacromial shoulder impingements. PATIENTS AND METHODS At a secondary care center, 62 patients (56 females, 6 males; mean age 55.8±9.3 years; range 35 to 74 years) with the clinical and radiological diagnosis of shoulder impingement syndrome were enrolled to the study. Two injections were applied to ACJ and subacromial space. Patients were assessed through OSTs (Neer, Hawkins-Kennedy, empty can, full can, external rotation resistance, lift-off and cross-body adduction tests) at baseline and after injection to ACJ and subacromial space. In this study, we aimed to investigate effects of Ai Chi on balance, functional mobility, health-related quality of life, and motor impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease.This study was conducted as an open-label randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN26292510) with repeated measures. Forty patients with Parkinson's disease stages 2 to 3 according to the Hoehn and Yahr Scale were randomly allocated to either an Ai Chi exercise group or a land-based exercise control group for 5 weeks. Balance was measured using the Biodex-3,1 and the Berg Balance Scale. Functional mobility was evaluated using the Timed Up and Go Test. Additionally, health-related quality of life and motor activity were assessed with the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-III.Although patients in both groups showed significant improvement in all outcome variables, improvement of dynamic balance was significantly greater in the Ai Chi group (p 0.001), Berg Balance Scale (p 0.001), Timed Up and Go Test (p = 0.002), Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 (p 0.001), Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-III (p 0.001).Our results suggest that an Ai Chi exercise program improves balance, mobility, motor ability, and quality of life. In addition, Ai Chi exercise was more effective as an intervention than land-based exercise in patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease. Implications for rehabilitation Ai Chi exercises (aquatic exercises) may help improve balance, functional mobility, health-related quality of life, and motor ability in patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease more efficiently than similar land-based exercises. Ai Chi exercises should be considered as a rehabilitation option for treatment of patients with mild or moderate Parkinson's disease.
