Abstract

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), An investigation of mercury (Hg) in soils and stream sediments was conducted to understand the impact of urbanization on Hg deposition and accumulation on the upper west fork of the White River watershed in central Indiana. Samples were collected to the north and east (i.e., downwind) of emission sources to understand the anthropogenic influences on Hg distribution in soil. Stream sediment sampling was designed to characterize the riverine particulate deposition of Hg through Indianapolis and to predict the potential for stream sediments with high Hg to become sources of methylmercury (MeHg). Spatial analysis revealed that soil Hg was elevated downwind of known industrial emission sites, indicating a local footprint of Hg deposition in central Indiana. Hg in streambank sediments was generally low in up-river sites to the northeast of Indianapolis, and increased markedly as the White River flowed through downtown, with high Hg persisting to downstream rural locations far to the south approximately 40 miles. The stream sediment results also revealed variations in total Hg (Hg(T)) as a function of local depositional sources, sub-watershed location, combined sewer outflows (CSOs), and impoundments along the White River. Low Hg values were recorded where the White River flow rate increased south of the 16th street dam at the confluence of the Fall Creek, where bankside industry and development confine the river. Three tributaries feeding into the White River were included in this study site, all having CSOs. Fall Creek and Pleasant Run have higher values of Hg with Lick Creek having lower values in comparison to the White River and other tributaries. The highest values occur right before confluences to the White River where the flow rate slows and drops sediment. Mercury values typically increased immediately downstream of dams and impoundments. Hg(T) deposition and transport processes pose a problem to anglers fishing south of Indianapolis who may not be aware of the potential dangers related to elevated stream sediment Hg values and the greater potential for MeHg production from these sediments.

Abstract

Social activists have argued that African American men must play a prominent role as volunteers in social programs that affect the African American community. Using a sample of African American men (N= 171), the present study examines the relative utility of social capital, communalism, and religiosity variables as predictors of volunteerism, membership in community-based as well as political and social justice organizations, and the number of hours that men dedicate to volunteer work each year. Church involvement was associated with a greater likelihood to volunteer and a greater likelihood to be a member of a community-based organization. Men who scored higher on communalism, and men who were more involved in church life dedicated more time to volunteer work each year. A complex pattern of relationship emerged between age, education, and the various participation outcomes. Implications of the findings are discussed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 9. An Empirical Study of the Psychodynamics of Suicide.

Abstract

This paper presents results from an empirical study of four key psychodynamic concepts (self-directed aggression, object loss, ego functioning disturbance, pathological object relations) of suicidal behavior. The sample consists of hospitalized psychiatric patients following a suicide attempt (attempters: n = 52) and demographically similar hospitalized psychiatric patients with no history of suicidal behavior (controls: n = 47). The study was designed to ascertain whether attempters differed from matched psychiatric control patients on the four psychodynamic constructs hypothesized to be associated with suicide. It was predicted that attempters would manifest higher levels of depression and self-targeted anger, a more significant history of loss, less adaptive defenses, and more primitive object representations. Results strongly supported an object-relational view of suicidal behavior. In addition, support for the loss hypothesis was found in the identification of one specific constellation of losses. Namely, attempters were significantly more likely to report a history of childhood loss combined with a recent loss in adulthood than were their nonattempter counterparts. Limited support was provided for the other two hypotheses in differentiating suicidal from nonsuicidal severely ill psychiatric patients. This unexpected finding is examined and suggestions are made for the refinement and greater specification of psychodynamic theories regarding the etiology of suicidal behavior, with the aim of differentiating individuals prone to such action from those with similar psychopathology and dynamic issues who do not actually attempt suicide. Limitations of the study are discussed and implications of the findings for the theory and treatment of suicidal behavior are offered. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

11. African -American individuals' perceived relationships with God and psychological well -being.

Abstract

Previous studies have generally found a positive association between religiosity/spirituality and improved psychological outcomes. However, there is little understanding of the specific ways in which spirituality and religion are linked to individuals' psychological status. This study examines the association between individuals' perceptions of the nature of their relationships with God and psychological well-being in a sample of 131 African American adults. Two scales based on Relational theory and research were developed to examine the degree of co-creativity (i.e., mutuality as defined by Genero, Miller, & Surrey, 1992: enhanced engagement, empathy, empowerment, authenticity, zest, and diversity) in individuals' communication and relationships with God. The measures of communication and relationship with God were named the Mutual Psychological Development Questionnaire - God (MPDQ-G) and Relationship with God (RWG) scales respectively and were based on the Mutual Psychological Development Questionnaire (Genero, et al., 1992) and the Relational Health Indices (Liang, Taylor, Williams, Tracy, Jordan, & Miller, 1998), scales devised by Relational theorists to examine mutuality in interpersonal relationships. The new measures were found to be reliable and valid and each captured two distinct factors. The MPDQ-G consisted of empathic/empowering and unengaged/discouraged communication with God factors. The RWG consisted of factors capturing affirming/authentic and disappointing/punishing qualities in relationship with God. Models of psychological well-being were examined which included demographic characteristics, friendship network quality (i.e., perceived friendship support and friendship satisfaction), religious involvement factors (i.e., organizational and subjective religiosity), and the MPDQ-G and RWG. Regression and structural equation models revealed that co-creativity in communication with God (i.e., MPDQ-G scores), co-creativity in relationship with God (i.e., RWG scores), and perceived friendship support were consistently predictive of psychological well-being. Friendship satisfaction, organizational religiosity, and subjective religiosity did not directly predict psychological well-being, although indirect associations were found. Regression models provided evidence for an association between gender and depression such that women tended to be more depressed. Structural equation models revealed that education indirectly influenced life satisfaction and depression through the RWG. More educated participants tended to indicate higher levels of co-creativity in their relationships with God, and higher RWG scores were associated with decreased depression and increased life satisfaction.
