Ligament repair preserves proprioceptors in the native ligament and avoids autograft tendon harvest, minimizing the complications associated with donor site ruptures in reconstruction techniques. Tissue augmentation has been successfully used in knee ligamentous and tendon repair procedures, as well as in some upper extremity procedures. Abstract

Non-human primates are the animals closest to humans for use in influenza A virus challenge studies, in terms of their phylogenetic relatedness, physiology and immune systems. Previous studies have shown that cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) are permissive for infection with H1N1pdm influenza virus. These studies have typically used combined challenge routes, with the majority being intra-tracheal delivery, and high doses of virus (> 107 infectious units). This paper describes the outcome of novel challenge routes (inhaled aerosol, intra-nasal instillation) and low to moderate doses (103 to 106 plaque forming units) of H1N1pdm virus in cynomolgus macaques. Evidence of virus replication and sero-conversion were detected in all four challenge groups, although the disease was sub-clinical. Intra-nasal challenge led to an infection confined to the nasal cavity. A low dose (103 plaque forming units) did not lead to detectable infectious virus shedding, but a 1000-fold higher dose led to virus shedding in all intra-nasal challenged animals. In contrast, aerosol and intra-tracheal challenge routes led to infections throughout the respiratory tract, although shedding from the nasal cavity was less reproducible between animals compared to the high-dose intra-nasal challenge group. Intra-tracheal and aerosol challenges induced a transient lymphopaenia, similar to that observed in influenza-infected humans, and greater virus-specific cellular immune responses in the blood were observed in these groups in comparison to the intra-nasal challenge groups. Activation of lung macrophages and innate immune response genes was detected at days 5 to 7 post-challenge. The kinetics of infection, both virological and immunological, were broadly in line with human influenza A virus infections. These more authentic infection models will be valuable in the determination of anti-influenza efficacy of novel entities against less severe (and thus more common) influenza infections.

Abstract

This paper presents the outcome of the first international forensic radiology and imaging research summit, organized by the International Society of Forensic Radiology and Imaging, the International Association of Forensic Radiographers, the National Institute of Justice of the United States of America, and the Netherlands Forensic Institute. During this meeting, an international and multidisciplinary panel of forensic scientists discussed the current state of science in forensic radiology, and drafted a research agenda to further advance the field. Four groups for further research focus were identified: big data and statistics, identification and biological profiling, multimodal imaging, and visualization and presentation. This paper describes each of these research topics and thereby hopes to contribute to the development of this exciting new field of forensic medical science.

This paper reports solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) carried out using a microfluidic device and considers the REE loading limit of the organic phase under laminar flow. The microfluidic device contacts aqueous and organic phase streams for a precisely defined contact time (sub-second resolution) and then separates them for offline analysis. Experiments are reported examining the effect of contact time on extraction. We focus on three REEs: one ‘light’ (Nd), one ‘mid’ (Dy), and one ‘heavy’ (Yb) REE, which are extracted using Cyanex®572. It appears that loading limits may be locally exceeded in the organic phase near to the liquid-liquid interface, where third phase deposits are observed. Third phase formation was also observed close to the liquid-liquid interface in two-dimensional confinement, showing similar third phase adsorption on glass plates. It is also shown that, under microfluidic flow, a typical first ‘split’ between heavy REEs and light REEs can be carried out without exceeding loading limits.

Abstract

Solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) involves hundreds of individual extraction and phase separation cycles, fine adjustment of solution conditions, and individual stage and overall process times that are long. Therefore, we investigated microfluidic solvent extraction (microSX) of REEs from a leached mixed rare earth oxide (REO) mineral concentrate using a phosphorus-based cationic exchange extractant (Cyanex® 572). A Y-Y microchip was used, in which the aqueous and organic phases were contacted for up to 15 s with sub-second resolution. The extraction rate and selectivity for heavy REEs was determined for the prepared leach solution. Good selectivity for heavy REEs was observed using the microchip for leach solutions adjusted to pH 0.7. Extraction rates on the microchip were typically double that observed in conventional (bulk) solvent extractions, except for Lu and Yb, which were three-times faster. The faster extraction can be largely attributed to the higher surface-to-volume ratio achieved in our microfluidic experiments; double that observed for bulk extractions under the conditions employed.

Abstract

A study concerned with the improvement of thermionic converter performance has shown that the plasma arc drop of the conventional arc (ignited) mode converter can be suppressed by use of an auxiliary ion source as in a plasmatron converter. However, this improved performance is now limited to low current densities and narrow interelectrode spacings because of voltage losses due to plasma resistance. An examination of plasmatron performance characteristics for both argon and cesium plasma has shown that the argon plasmatron is superior.

Abstract

A low cost cylindrical thermionic converter has been designed, fabricated, and tested for use in a NASA-JPL program to directly measure converter lead efficiencies using various electrode materials and surfaces. Efficiency measurements are made using input emitter heater power, output power at the leads, and calculated values of the parasitic losses that would not be present in the application configuration. This information can be used to predict the performance characteristics of the advanced converters currently under development. A series of five converters has been tested. Both structured and smooth molybdenum collectors have been used. Emitters included smooth molybdenum, smooth rhenium, and microstructured rhenium. Cesium pressure families of current-voltage curves are presented for emitter temperatures of 1600, 1700, and 1800 K, along with measured efficiencies as a function of converter current densities for each temperature.

Abstract

It is shown that it is possible to controllably and continuously elevate the electron temperature in the plasmatron thermionic energy converter from the emitter temperature to the maintenance electron temperature for the diode arc mode. This ability and the apparent validity of an elementary analytical model of the plasma should make possible the optimization and evaluation of operation under strong ionization conditions for which the plasma resistance should be acceptably low. Measurement of the vacuum space charge arising from the emission from a surface in cesium vapor indicates the presence of a substantial negative ion emission current. Apparatus has been constructed for identifying and directly measuring the flux of positive, negative and neutral species emitted from an electrode surface in a cesium vapor diode. The primary purpose of the investigation is to determine the influence of negative ion emission on the effective work function of thermionic converter electrodes. Initial data indicate the presence of H(-), Cs(-) and possibly C(-) and CH(-).

Abstract

A theory of the plasmatron was developed. Also, a wide range of measurements were obtained with two versatile, research devices. To gain insight into plasmatron performance, the experimental results are compared with calculations based on the theoretical model of plasmatron operation. Results are presented which show that the plasma arc drop of the conventional arc (ignited) mode converter can be suppressed by use of an auxiliary ion source. The improved performance, however, is presently limited to low current densities because of voltage losses due to plasma resistance. This resistance loss could be suppressed by an increase in the plasma electron temperature or a decrease in spacing. Plasmatron performance characteristics for both argon and cesium are reported. The argon plasmatron has superior performance. Results are also presented for magnetic cutoff effects and for current distributing effects. These are shown to be important factors for the design of practical devices.
