Abstract

The ISS (Integral-field Spectrograph System) has been designed as part of the EAGLE Phase A Instrument Study for the E-ELT. It consists of two input channels of 1.65x1.65 arcsec field-of-view, each reconfigured spatially by an image-slicing integral-field unit to feed a single near-IR spectrograph using cryogenic volume-phase-holographic (VPH) gratings to disperse the image spectrally. A 4k x 4k array detector array records the dispersed images. The optical design employs anamorphic magnification, image slicing, VPH gratings scanned with a novel cryo-mechanism and a three-lens camera. The mechanical implementation features IFU optics in Zerodur, a modular bench structure and a number of high-precision cryo-mechanisms., Comment: 12 pages, to be published in Proc SPIE 7735: Ground-based & Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy III

2. Ultrafast Optical Response of a High-Reflectivity GaAs/AlAs Bragg Mirror

Abstract

The ultrafast response of a high-reflectivity GaAs/AlAs Bragg mirror to optical pumping is investigated for all-optical switching applications. Both Kerr and free carrier nonlinearities are induced with 100 fs, 780 nm pulses with a fluence of 0.64 kJ/m^2 and 0.8 kJ/m^2. The absolute transmission of the mirror at 931 nm increases by a factor of 27 from 0.0024% to 0.065% on a picosecond timescale. These results demonstrate the potential for a high-reflectivity ultrafast switchable mirror for quantum optics and optical communication applications. A design is proposed for a structure to be pumped below the bandgaps of the semiconductor mirror materials. Theoretical calculations on this structure show switching ratios up to 2200 corresponding to switching from 0.017% to 37.4% transmission., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letters

3. Current Issues and Problems in Texas Community Colleges.

Abstract

In October 1992, doctoral students enrolled in a community college leadership program at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, were assigned six questions to be answered in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), or the CEO's designate, at the 15 community colleges where the students were employed. The questions explored respondents' perceptions of the top issues/problems facing the colleges; the solutions currently being tried or being proposed to address these issues/problems; new campus administrative programs or efforts implemented in fall 1992; new campus curricular and instructional programs implemented in fall 1992; research studies that respondents would like to see undertaken on their campus in fall 1992; and research studies currently underway at the campuses. Study findings included the following: (1) over 50% of the respondents cited inadequate state funding as the top issue/problem facing the college, followed by the need for expansion of present facilities and new facilities, and the need for more progressive and effective leadership; (2) new approaches to budgeting was the most frequently cited solution for dealing with fiscal problems; (3) among the new administrative programs and efforts cited by respondents were early retirement incentives, total quality management, and a support system for black male students; (4) several colleges reported ongoing revision and updating of curricular and instructional programs; (5) among the research of interest to respondents were studies of student retention, and grades and attendance correlation; and (6) five respondents reported not knowing of any research studies currently underway at their campus. Abstract

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) maintains the world’s largest extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) registry by volume, center participation, and international scope. This 2022 ELSO Registry Report describes the program characteristics of ECMO centers, processes of ECMO care, and reported outcomes. Neonates (0–28 days), children (29 days–17 years), and adults (≥18 years) supported with ECMO from 2009 through 2022 and reported to the ELSO Registry were included. This report describes adjunctive therapies, support modes, treatments, complications, and survival outcomes. Data are presented descriptively as counts and percent or median and interquartile range (IQR) by year, group, or level. Missing values were excluded before calculating descriptive statistics. Complications are reported per 1,000 ECMO hours. From 2009 to 2022, 154,568 ECMO runs were entered into the ELSO Registry. Seven hundred and eighty centers submitted data during this time (557 in 2022). Since 2009, the median annual number of adult ECMO runs per center per year increased from 4 to 15, whereas for pediatric and neonatal runs, the rate decreased from 12 to 7. Over 50% of patients were transferred to the reporting ECMO center; 20% of these patients were transported with ECMO. The use of prone positioning before respiratory ECMO increased from 15% (2019) to 44% (2021) for adults during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Survival to hospital discharge was greatest at 68.5% for neonatal respiratory support and lowest at 29.5% for ECPR delivered to adults. By 2022, the Registry had enrolled its 200,000th ECMO patient and 100,000th patient discharged alive. Since its inception, the ELSO Registry has helped centers measure and compare outcomes across its member centers and strategies of care. Continued growth and development of the Registry will aim to bolster its utility to patients and centers.

5. Training in a Summer Camp Setting for Paraprofessionals Working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Abstract

This is a report of a training program for preparing paraprofessionals to work with the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Forty paraprofessionals and 200 deaf and hard-of-hearing children participated in the program in a camping setting. During the first week the trainees received instruction in behavior modification and communication skills, child development, and exploration of attitudes and feelings. During the next two weeks the paraprofessionals lived with the handicapped children on a 24-hour basis, taking care of all of their needs and organizing various activities. The trainees got together every morning with the project director to discuss any problems facing any of them and to find appropriate means of dealing with them. The trainees also engaged in counseling the handicapped children. At the end of the project the results were judged to be positive since most of the objectives were realized. (SE)

McLennan Community College is presently involved in a three-phase project designed to develop and implement a coordinated program of supportive services that will enable physically and sensorially limited adults to pursue occupationally oriented training-educational programs. This report of Phase I (January-June 1975) presents the following: (1) descriptions of exemplary programs of individualized supportive services for the physically and sensorially handicapped at five community colleges; (2) the results of a survey sent to 120 post-secondary institutions in Texas to gain an overview of the number of handicapped students enrolled in those institutions and the kinds of supportive services provided for them; (3) a list of the supportive services available from local agencies; (4) a discussion of viable procedures to be followed in identifying and recruiting potential students; (5) a consideration of the psychological and physical/architectural barriers on campus; and (6) descriptions of the kinds of supportive services needed. 9. Intensive Training for Teacher Aides Working with Hearing Impaired Children.

Abstract

In summer 1975, McLennan Community College selected 64 counselor-trainees to participate in two 2-week summer camp sessions, each of which involved 50 deaf or hard of hearing children, ranging from 7-12 years of age. Trainees had minimal manual communication skills, and were selected from applicants who were either enrolled in training programs related to working with the deaf or hard of hearing, currently working in paraprofessional roles in this field, or interested in exploring this career opportunity. Each trainee was enrolled in McLennan Community College and received either four or five semester hours of credit for the four weeks of experience and training. Trainees worked directly with the Camp Director and Resident Coordinator and were responsible for a particular instructional activity (swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, archery, riflery, and nature study). The Camp Director and Coordinator worked together in orienting the trainees in the organization and operation of the camp. Instruction was given in child growth and development, with emphasis on social development principles, behavior modification, recreation skills and crafts for individuals and groups, and total communication skills including finger spelling, signs, body language, and vocabulary. 11. Community Survey, June, 1982.

Abstract

In summer 1982, a telephone survey was conducted by McLennan Community College (MCC) to determine the knowledge and opinions of McLennan County residents about the school. Interviews were conducted with 235 individuals, providing a sample in which people over 60 and between 18 and 21, females, and whites were overrepresented in terms of county demographics. The survey revealed: (1) over 85% of the respondents had been on the MCC campus, and over 41% had taken courses at the school; (2) respondents who had not previously attended a campus event expressed interest in lectures by prominent people, dramatic productions, and concerts; (3) over 90% of the respondents felt that MCC should offer education on a part-time basis, and provide occupational and transfer preparation; (4) 29% felt that MCC was satisfactorily disseminating information about its programs and services; however, a significant percentage of the respondents were not aware of MCC's entrance requirements or costs; (5) time conflicts with employment were cited by 45.9% of the respondents as their reason for not attending college courses; (6) 54% indicated an interest in avocational courses; (7) the most preferred class meeting times were weekday evenings and weekdays; and (8) overall the respondents expressed positive feelings about MCC. The study report presents survey responses to each question for respondents grouped by age, sex, ethnicity, educational attainment, income, job, and previous MCC attendance. (AYC)

Two- and three-coordinate manganese m-terphenyl complexes are precatalysts for the dehydrogenation of dimethylamine–borane (Me2NH·BH3) affording one equivalent of molecular hydrogen and half an equivalent of [Me2N–BH2]2. Experimental studies into the nature of the catalyst indicate that small changes in the coordination environment give rise to significant differences in the reaction mechanism, occurring through a homogeneous mechanism for two-coordinate precatalysts, whilst for the three-coordinate species a heterogeneous mechanism takes place where nanoparticles are responsible for the catalysis.

19. The Hidden Story of Innovation: Charity Hospital, Angola Prison, and the Challenging of Surgical Dogma

Abstract

The late 1960s was a period of significant upheaval of social, cultural, and scientific norms. The generally accepted notion of mandatory laparotomy for all penetrating abdominal injuries was among those norms being called into question across the country and many advocated expectant management of selected patients presenting with this type of injury. Leaders of the surgical community published opinions on either side of the argument. The house staff at Charity Hospital during this period was among the busiest in the nation in treating these injuries, many of them inmates of the Louisiana State Penitentiary who used self-inflicted stab wounds to the abdomen as a means of temporary respite from the inhumane conditions in the prison. Inspired, in part, by the overabundance of negative laparotomies among this group, F. Carter Nance went on to systematically challenge the standard of care. This effort constitutes one of the major forces for change of the surgical dogma of mandatory laparotomy for all abdominal stab wounds. It is the first major study to show conclusively that delayed laparotomy for perforated viscous was not significantly detrimental and posed less of a risk than unnecessary laparotomy. The circumstances surrounding this initiative constitute a powerful and heretofore unknown chapter in the history of surgical innovation.

20. Re-examining premature mortality in anorexia nervosa: A meta-analysis redux.

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is reported to have the highest premature mortality of any psychiatric disorder, but recent meta-analyses may have inflated estimates. We sought to re-estimate mortality after methodological corrections and to identify predictors of mortality. We included 41 cohorts from 40 peer-reviewed studies published between 1966 and 2010. Methods included double data extraction, log-linear regression with an over-dispersed Poisson model, and all-cause and suicide-specific standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), with 95% Poisson confidence intervals. Participants with AN were 5.2 [3.7-7.5] times more likely to die prematurely from any cause, and 18.1 [11.5-28.7] times more likely to die by suicide than 15-34 year old females in the general population. Our estimates were 10% and 49% lower, respectively, than previously reported SMRs. Risk of premature mortality was highest in studies with older participants, although confounding by treatment was present. Gender, ascertainment, and diagnostic criteria also impacted risk. Abstract

Abstract: We examined the role of vagus nerves in the transmission of the portal glucose signal in conscious dogs. At time 0, somatostatin infusion was started along with intraportal insulin and glucagon at 4-fold basal and basal rates, respectively. Glucose was infused via a peripheral vein to create hyperglycemia (≃2 fold basal). At t = 90, hollow coils around the vagus nerves were perfused with −10°C or 37°C solution in the vagally cooled (COOL) and sham-cooled (SHAM) groups, respectively (n = 6 per group). Effectiveness of vagal blockade was demonstrated by increase in heart rate during perfusion in the COOL vs SHAM groups (183 ± 3 vs 102 ± 5 beats per minute, respectively) and by prolapse of the third eyelid in the COOL group. Arterial plasma insulin (22 ± 2 and 24 ± 3 μU/mL) and glucagon (37 ± 5 and 40 ± 4 pg/mL) concentrations did not change significantly between the first experimental period and the coil perfusion period in either the SHAM or COOL group, respectively. The hepatic glucose load throughout the entire experiment was 46 ± 1 and 50 ± 2 mg · kg−1 · min−1 in the SHAM and COOL groups, respectively. Net hepatic glucose uptake (NHGU) did not differ in the SHAM and COOL groups before (2.2 ± 0.5 and 2.9 ± 0.8 mg · kg−1 · min−1, respectively) or during the cooling period (3.0 ± 0.5 and 3.4 ± 0.6 mg · kg−1 · min−1, respectively). Likewise, net hepatic glucose fractional extraction and nonhepatic glucose uptake and clearance were not different between groups during coil perfusion. Interruption of vagal signaling in the presence of hyperinsulinemia and hyperglycemia resulting from peripheral glucose infusion did not affect NHGU, further supporting our previous suggestion that vagal input to the liver is not a primary determinant of NHGU. The US Army and eMagin Corporation established a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to characterize the ongoing improvements in the lifetime of OLED displays. This CRADA also called for the evaluation of OLED performance as the need arises, especially when new products are developed or when a previously untested parameter needs to be understood. In 2006, eMagin Corporation developed long-life OLED-XL devices for use in their AMOLED microdisplays for head-worn applications. Through Research and Development programs from 2007 to 2011 with the US Government, eMagin made additional improvements in OLED life and developed the first SXGA (1280 X 1024 triad pixels) and WUXGA (1920 X 1200) OLED microdisplays. US Army RDECOM CERDEC NVESD conducted life and performance tests on these displays, publishing results at the 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007 SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing Symposia1,2,3,4,5. Life and performance tests have continued through 2012, and this data will be presented along with a recap of previous data. This should result in a better understanding of the applicability of AMOLEDs in military and commercial head mounted systems by determining where good fits are made and where further development might be desirable.

24. Spatial noise in microdisplays for near-to-eye applications

Abstract

Spatial noise in imaging systems has been characterized and its impact on image quality metrics has been addressed primarily with respect to the introduction of this noise at the sensor component. However, sensor fixed pattern noise is not the only source of fixed pattern noise in an imaging system. Display fixed pattern noise cannot be easily mitigated in processing and, therefore, must be addressed. In this paper, a thorough examination of the amount and the effect of display fixed pattern noise is presented. The specific manifestation of display fixed pattern noise is dependent upon the display technology. Utilizing a calibrated camera, US Army RDECOM CERDEC NVESD has developed a microdisplay (display) spatial noise data collection capability. Noise and signal power spectra were used to characterize the display signal to noise ratio (SNR) as a function of spatial frequency analogous to the minimum resolvable temperature difference (MRTD) of a thermal sensor. The goal of this study is to establish a measurement technique to characterize display limiting performance to assist in proper imaging system specification.

26. Complications of colostomy closure

Abstract

The records of 83 patients with 85 colostomy closures at Charity Hospital, New Orleans from January 1976 through June 1981 were reviewed. There were 47 complications in 30 patients (36 percent) with no deaths. The material used for anastomosis and fascial closure, the precipitating or underlying disease, the site of colostomy, and the length of operation did not influence the complication rate. The major factor affecting the complication rate was the interval of time from creation of the colostomy to its closure. Those patients who underwent closure after a 90 day interval had a lower overall complication rate than comparison groups with less than a 30 day interval and 30 to 90 day intervals (p ˂ 0.05). Other factors that appeared to influence the complication rate were as follows: loop colostomies had a lower suture line complication rate than divided colostomies, patients who underwent relaparotomy and closure had a higher complication rate than those whose closures were confined to the colostomy site, and wounds left open or that underwent delayed primary closure had a lower infection rate than wounds closed primarily.

Production of HIV-1 from latently infected cells requires host cell activation by T-cell mitogens (T. Folks, D. M. Powell, M. M. Lightfoote, S. Benn, M. A. Martin, and A. S. Fauci, Science 231:600-602, 1986; D. Zagury, J. Bernard, R. Leonard, R. Cheynier, M. Feldman, P. S. Sarin, and R. C. Gallo, Science 231:850-853, 1986). This activation is mediated by the host transcription factor NF-kappa B [G. Nabel and D. Baltimore, Nature (London) 326:711-717, 1987]. We report here that the HIV-1-encoded Nef protein inhibits the induction of NF-kappa B DNA-binding activity by T-cell mitogens. However, Nef does not affect the DNA-binding activity of other transcription factors implicated in HIV-1 regulation, including SP-1, USF, URS, and NF-AT. Additionally, Nef inhibits the induction of HIV-1- and interleukin 2-directed gene expression, and the effect on HIV-1 transcription depends on an intact NF-kappa B-binding site. These results indicate that defective recruitment of NF-kappa B may underlie Nef's negative transcriptional effects on the HIV-1 and interleukin 2 promoters. Further evidence suggests that Nef inhibits NF-kappa B induction by interfering with a signal derived from the T-cell receptor complex.

Abstract

• This study was undertaken to investigate possible factors [ill]ontributing to altered glucose homeostasis in a patient with a [ill]story of total pancreatectomy and intermittent sepsis. Blood [ill]as drawn when the patient had received no exogenous [ill]sulin for the previous 24 hours, had a serum insulin level of [ill]3 μU/mL, and gave an inappropriately low glucose response [ill]large amounts of infused glucose. The IgG fraction prepared [ill]om this serum stimulated glucose oxidation in vitro and [ill]hibited binding of insulin labeled with I 125 to isolated rat [ill]dipocytes, thus fulfilling some of the criteria for autoan[ill]bodies to the insulin receptor. The results are compatible with [ill]e hypothesis that insulin-receptor autoantibodies may have [ill]eveloped as a result of perturbation of this patient's immune [ill]tatus promoted by intermittent septic episodes and that, [ill]eterminally, as these antibodies converted in vivo to their in [ill]tro—type behavior, they may have been partially responsible [ill]or the severe disturbances of glucose homeostasis.(Arch Intern Med 1984;144:2019-2022)

Abstract

Caveolae are subdomains of the plasma membrane which concentrate cholesterol, glycosphingolipids, and glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked proteins. It has recently been demonstrated that specific members of the Src family of protein tyrosine kinases require palmitoylation of NH2-terminal cysteine residues to localize in caveolae. Here we report that caveolin, an integral membrane protein which forms part of the coat of caveolae, also incorporates palmitate through linkage to cysteine residues. Caveolin contains only three cysteine residues which are all located on the COOH-terminal side of the hydrophobic transmembrane region. Immunofluorescent staining of cells transfected with caveolin indicated that, like the NH2 terminus, this COOH-terminal region is located on the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane. Studies of cysteine substitution mutants showed that all three cysteines are capable of incorporating palmitate and that the juxtamembrane Cys133 residue is the predominant site of palmitoylation. Simultaneous mutation of all three cysteine residues in caveolin resulted in the loss of ability to incorporate palmitate; however, this did not affect localization of the protein. Thus, palmitoylation of cysteine residues in nonmembrane spanning Src family protein tyrosine kinases has different consequences than in the transmembrane protein caveolin.

Two proteins, HMG-T1 and HMG-T2, with electrophoretic mobilities and compositions similar to those of protein HMG-T, were isolated from trout testes nuclei. The isoelectric points of proteins HMG-T1, HMG-T2 and HMG-T differ. The first 20 residues of protein HMG-T2 have been sequenced and differ from protein HMG-T by only one residue.

33. Spectroscopic evidence for the uneven distribution of adenine and uracil residues in ribosomal ribonucleic acid of Drosophila melanogaster and of Plasmodium knowlesi and its possible evolutionary significance

Abstract

RNA was isolated from subribosomal particles of the malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi. The nucleotide composition (mole fraction) of the principal species was obtained (S-rRNA, 0.295A, 0.36U, 0.25G, 0.105C: L-rRNA, 0.326A, 0.31U, 0.228G, 0.144C). Ribosomal RNA was also isolated from Drosophila melanogaster. Optical properties of these A + U-rich species were measured. In all four cases analysis of the hypochromic effect revealed that adenine and uracil residues tended to form clusters along the polynucleotide chain. A substantial fraction of residues was located in bihelical regions of approx. 50% G-C base pairs or in regions of approx. 30-35% G-C base pairs. The possible evolutionary significance of these results was considered on the basis of comparison with properties of rRNA from bacteria (Escherichia coli) and a mammal (rabbit reticulocyte).

39. The use of support-bonded silicones for the extration of organochlorines of interest from water

Abstract

Water was spiked with various types of chlorinated organics at trace levels, in an effort to demonstrate the pontential of support-bonded silicones to collect these pollutants from natural aqueous systems. Greater amounts of the spiked water were pumped through a bed of a silicone phase, followed by a small amount of pentane. The pentane eluted the collected organochlorines, ready for determination by electron capture gas chromatography. This approach proved successfl for most model compounds of parts per trillion levels.

44. A novel continuous sequence of 41 aspartic and glutamic residues in a non-histone chromosomal protein

Abstract

THE structural functions of four of the five histones are now partially understood1and the nucleosome structure of chromatin well established2–4. However, superimposed on this basic nucleosome structure is some heterogeneity with respect to the other chromosomal proteins, since although it has been shown that isolated nucleosomes contain non-histone chromosomal proteins5,6, there are insufficient of some classes for one per nucleosome. These nucleosomal non-histone chromosomal proteins have been designated the high-mobility group (HMG) proteins. They have been fractionated, and the main components, HMG 1, HMG 2, HMG 14 and HMG 17 have been isolated in a pure form7–9. The complete amino acid sequence of one of these proteins, HMG 17, has been determined10. We report here that the C-terminal region of protein HMG 1 contains an extremely unusual sequence of amino acids—41 aspartic and glutamic acid residues.
