This study investigates the impact of summer bridge programs on the transition, engagement, and retention of Black male students at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). Black males continue to face significant challenges in higher education, including low retention rates and limited feelings of belonging. The purpose of this mixed-methods research was to evaluate how summer bridge programs address these issues by enhancing academic preparedness, motivation to persist, and social integration for Black males at PWIs. The study sought to answer the following research questions: (1) How do summer bridge programs focused on Black males affect their transition from high school to college and overall retention at PWIs? (2) What motivates Black males to persevere toward graduation at PWIs? (3) How do summer bridge programs play a role in increasing the engagement of Black males at PWIs? Using both quantitative surveys and qualitative semi-structured interviews, this research findings revealed that while summer bridge programs helped students foster an early sense of belonging, it was the support from dedicated staff and participants' families that sustained their motivation to succeed. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of culturally responsive programming that acknowledges the unique experiences and strengths of Black male students. These findings suggest that PWIs should prioritize targeted support programs and foster inclusive environments that affirm students' cultural identities, contributing to the broader discourse on educational equity and institutional commitment to Black male student success.

Neural network training tends to exploit the simplest features as shortcuts to greedily minimize training loss. However, some of these features might be spuriously correlated with the target labels, leading to incorrect predictions by the model. Several methods have been proposed to address this issue. Focusing on suppressing the spurious correlations with model training, they not only incur additional training cost, but also have limited practical utility as the model misbehavior due to spurious relations is usually discovered after its deployment. It is also often overlooked that spuriousness is a subjective notion. Hence, the precise questions that must be investigated are; to what degree a feature is spurious, and how we can proportionally distract the model's attention from it for reliable prediction. To this end, we propose a method that enables post-hoc neutralization of spurious feature impact, controllable to an arbitrary degree. We conceptualize spurious features as fictitious sub-classes within the original classes, which can be eliminated by a class removal scheme. We then propose a unique precise class removal technique that employs a single-weight modification, which entails negligible performance compromise for the remaining classes. We perform extensive experiments, demonstrating that by editing just a single weight in a post-hoc manner, our method achieves highly competitive, or better performance against the state-of-the-art methods.

We investigate the spin Hall conductivity (SHC) of a composition series of a Ta-Re bcc solid solution. At approximately 60 at.% Ta the Ta-Re alloy features an SHC similar to bcc-W, while both endpoints of the compositional series have rather moderate SHC. The intermediate stoichiometries exhibit a substantial enhancement due to Fermi level tuning through the same band structure feature which gives bcc-W and $\beta$-W its large SHC. We provide experimental evidence for the enhancement of the SHC in the alloy via THz emission upon ultrafast laser excitation of Ta-Re/CoFeB bilayers. This paper studies covert communication over channels with ADSI when the state is available either non-causally or causally at the transmitter. Covert communication refers to reliable communication between a transmitter and a receiver while ensuring a low probability of detection by an adversary, which we refer to as `warden'. It is well known that in a point-to-point DMC, it is possible to communicate on the order of $\sqrt{N}$ bits reliably and covertly over $N$ channel uses while the transmitter and the receiver are required to share a secret key on the order of $\sqrt{N}$ bits. This paper studies achieving reliable and covert communication of positive rate, i.e., reliable and covert communication on the order of N bits in N channel uses, over a channel with ADSI while the transmitter has non-causal or causal access to the ADSI, and the transmitter and the receiver share a secret key of negligible rate. We derive achievable rates for both the non-causal and causal scenarios by using block-Markov encoding and secret key generation from the ADSI, which subsumes the best achievable rates for channels with random states. We also derive upper bounds, for both non-causal and causal scenarios, that meet our achievable rates for some special cases. As an application of our problem setup, we study covert communication over channels with rewrite options, which are closely related to recording covert information on memory, and show that a positive covert rate can be achieved in such channels. As a special case of our problem, we study the AWGN channels and provide lower and upper bounds on the covert capacity that meet when the transmitter and the receiver share a secret key of sufficient rate and when the warden's channel is noisier than the legitimate receiver channel. The tidal wave of advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to their swift integration into application-level logic. Many software systems now use prompts to interact with these black-box models, combining natural language with dynamic values interpolated at runtime, to perform tasks ranging from sentiment analysis to question answering. Due to the programmatic and structured natural language aspects of these prompts, we refer to them as Developer Prompts. Unlike traditional software artifacts, Dev Prompts blend natural language instructions with artificial languages such as programming and markup languages, thus requiring specialized tools for analysis, distinct from classical software evaluation methods. In response to this need, we introduce PromptDoctor, a tool explicitly designed to detect and correct issues of Dev Prompts. PromptDoctor identifies and addresses problems related to bias, vulnerability, and sub-optimal performance in Dev Prompts, helping mitigate their possible harms. In our analysis of 2,173 Dev Prompts, selected as a representative sample of 40,573 Dev Prompts, we found that 3.46% contained one or more forms of bias, 10.75% were vulnerable to prompt injection attacks. Additionally, 3,310 were amenable to automated prompt optimization. To address these issues, we applied PromptDoctor to the flawed Dev Prompts we discovered. PromptDoctor de-biased 68.29% of the biased Dev Prompts, hardened 41.81% of the vulnerable Dev Prompts, and improved the performance of 37.1% sub-optimal Dev Prompts. Finally, we developed a PromptDoctor VSCode extension, enabling developers to easily enhance Dev Prompts in their existing development workflows. The emergence of quantum computing presents a formidable challenge to the security of blockchain systems. Traditional cryptographic algorithms, foundational to digital signatures, message encryption, and hashing functions, become vulnerable to the immense computational power of quantum computers. This paper conducts a thorough risk assessment of transitioning to quantum-resistant blockchains, comprehensively analyzing potential threats targeting vital blockchain components: the network, mining pools, transaction verification mechanisms, smart contracts, and user wallets. By elucidating the intricate challenges and strategic considerations inherent in transitioning to quantum-resistant algorithms, the paper evaluates risks and highlights obstacles in securing blockchain components with quantum-resistant cryptography. It offers a hybrid migration strategy to facilitate a smooth transition from classical to quantum-resistant cryptography. The analysis extends to prominent blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and Zcash, assessing vulnerable components, potential impacts, and associated STRIDE threats, thereby identifying areas susceptible to quantum attacks. Beyond analysis, the paper provides actionable guidance for designing secure and resilient blockchain ecosystems in the quantum computing era. Recognizing the looming threat of quantum computers, this research advocates for a proactive transition to quantum-resistant blockchain networks. It proposes a tailored security blueprint that strategically fortifies each component against the evolving landscape of quantum-induced cyber threats. Emphasizing the critical need for blockchain stakeholders to adopt proactive measures and implement quantum-resistant solutions, the paper underscores the importance of embracing these insights to navigate the complexities of the quantum era with resilience and confidence.

The generalization performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) is a critical factor in achieving robust model behavior on unseen data. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of sharpness-based measures in promoting generalization by encouraging convergence to flatter minima. Among these approaches, Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) has emerged as an effective optimization technique for reducing the sharpness of the loss landscape, thereby improving generalization. However, SAM's computational overhead and sensitivity to noisy gradients limit its scalability and efficiency. To address these challenges, we propose Gradient-Centralized Sharpness-Aware Minimization (GCSAM), which incorporates Gradient Centralization (GC) to stabilize gradients and accelerate convergence. GCSAM normalizes gradients before the ascent step, reducing noise and variance, and improving stability during training. Our evaluations indicate that GCSAM consistently outperforms SAM and the Adam optimizer in terms of generalization and computational efficiency. These findings demonstrate GCSAM's effectiveness across diverse domains, including general and medical imaging tasks.

Sentiment analysis (SA) plays a vital role in Natural Language Processing (NLP) by ~identifying sentiments expressed in text. Although significant advances have been made in SA for widely spoken languages, low-resource languages such as Hausa face unique challenges, primarily due to a lack of digital resources. This study investigates the effectiveness of Language-Adaptive Fine-Tuning (LAFT) to improve SA performance in Hausa. We first curate a diverse, unlabeled corpus to expand the model's linguistic capabilities, followed by applying LAFT to adapt AfriBERTa specifically to the nuances of the Hausa language. The adapted model is then fine-tuned on the labeled NaijaSenti sentiment dataset to evaluate its performance. Our findings demonstrate that LAFT gives modest improvements, which may be attributed to the use of formal Hausa text rather than informal social media data. Nevertheless, the pre-trained AfriBERTa model significantly outperformed models not specifically trained on Hausa, highlighting the importance of using pre-trained models in low-resource contexts. This research emphasizes the necessity for diverse data sources to advance NLP applications for low-resource African languages. Cephalometric analysis is essential for the diagnosis and treatment planning of orthodontics. In lateral cephalograms, however, the manual detection of anatomical landmarks is a time-consuming procedure. Deep learning solutions hold the potential to address the time constraints associated with certain tasks; however, concerns regarding their performance have been observed. To address this critical issue, we proposed an end-to-end cascaded deep learning framework (Self-CepahloNet) for the task, which demonstrated benchmark performance over the ISBI 2015 dataset in predicting 19 dental landmarks. Due to their adaptive nodal capabilities, Self-ONN (self-operational neural networks) demonstrate superior learning performance for complex feature spaces over conventional convolutional neural networks. To leverage this attribute, we introduced a novel self-bottleneck in the HRNetV2 (High Resolution Network) backbone, which has exhibited benchmark performance on the ISBI 2015 dataset for the dental landmark detection task. Our first-stage results surpassed previous studies, showcasing the efficacy of our singular end-to-end deep learning model, which achieved a remarkable 70.95% success rate in detecting cephalometric landmarks within a 2mm range for the Test1 and Test2 datasets. Moreover, the second stage significantly improved overall performance, yielding an impressive 82.25% average success rate for the datasets above within the same 2mm distance. Furthermore, external validation was conducted using the PKU cephalogram dataset. We study pairs of conics $(\mathcal{D},\mathcal{P})$, called \textit{$n$-Poncelet pairs}, such that an $n$-gon, called an \textit{$n$-Poncelet polygon}, can be inscribed into $\mathcal{D}$ and circumscribed about $\mathcal{P}$. Here $\mathcal{D}$ is a circle and $\mathcal{P}$ is a parabola from a confocal pencil $\mathcal{F}$ with the focus $F$. We prove that the circle contains $F$ if and only if every parabola $\mathcal{P}\in\mathcal{F}$ forms a $3$-Poncelet pair with the circle. We prove that the center of $\mathcal{D}$ coincides with $F$ if and only if every parabola $\mathcal{P}\in \mathcal{F}$ forms a $4$-Poncelet pair with the circle. We refer to such property, observed for $n=3$ and $n=4$, as \textit{$n$-isoperiodicity}. We prove that $\mathcal{F}$ is not $n$-isoperiodic with any circle $\mathcal{D}$ for $n$ different from $3$ and $4$. Using isoperiodicity, we construct explicit algebraic solutions to Painlev\'e VI equations.

We present MOFA, an open-source generative AI (GenAI) plus simulation workflow for high-throughput generation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on large-scale high-performance computing (HPC) systems. MOFA addresses key challenges in integrating GPU-accelerated computing for GPU-intensive GenAI tasks, including distributed training and inference, alongside CPU- and GPU-optimized tasks for screening and filtering AI-generated MOFs using molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and Monte Carlo simulations. These heterogeneous tasks are unified within an online learning framework that optimizes the utilization of available CPU and GPU resources across HPC systems. Performance metrics from a 450-node (14,400 AMD Zen 3 CPUs + 1800 NVIDIA A100 GPUs) supercomputer run demonstrate that MOFA achieves high-throughput generation of novel MOF structures, with CO$_2$ adsorption capacities ranking among the top 10 in the hypothetical MOF (hMOF) dataset. Furthermore, the production of high-quality MOFs exhibits a linear relationship with the number of nodes utilized. Abstract: Background: Understanding cardiovascular artery disease risk factors, the leading global cause of mortality, is crucial for influencing its etiology, prevalence, and treatment. This study aims to evaluate prognostic markers for coronary artery disease in Mashhad using Naive Bayes, REP Tree, J48, CART, and CHAID algorithms. Methods: Using data from the 2009 MASHAD STUDY, prognostic factors for coronary artery disease were determined with Naive Bayes, REP Tree, J48, CART, CHAID, and Random Forest algorithms using R 3.5.3 and WEKA 3.9.4. Model efficiency was compared by sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Cases were patients with coronary artery disease; each had three controls (totally 940). Results: Prognostic factors for coronary artery disease in Mashhad residents varied by algorithm. CHAID identified age, myocardial infarction history, and hypertension. CART included depression score and physical activity. REP added education level and anxiety score. NB included diabetes and family history. J48 highlighted father's heart disease and weight loss. CHAID had the highest accuracy (0.80). Conclusion: Key prognostic factors for coronary artery disease in CART and CHAID models include age, myocardial infarction history, hypertension, depression score, physical activity, and BMI. NB, REP Tree, and J48 identified numerous factors. CHAID had the highest accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Efficient spectrum allocation has become crucial as the surge in wireless-connected devices demands seamless support for more users and applications, a trend expected to grow with 6G. Innovations in satellite technologies such as SpaceX's Starlink have enabled non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) to work alongside terrestrial networks (TNs) and allocate spectrum based on regional demands. Existing spectrum sharing approaches in TNs use machine learning for interference minimization through power allocation and spectrum sensing, but the unique characteristics of NTNs like varying orbital dynamics and coverage patterns require more sophisticated coordination mechanisms. The proposed work uses a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning (HDRL) approach for efficient spectrum allocation across TN-NTN networks. DRL agents are present at each TN-NTN hierarchy that dynamically learn and allocate spectrum based on regional trends. This framework is 50x faster than the exhaustive search algorithm while achieving 95\% of optimum spectral efficiency. Recent studies have explored the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) on various Software Engineering (SE) tasks, such as code generation and bug fixing. However, these approaches typically rely on the context data from the current snapshot of the project, overlooking the potential of rich historical data from real-world software repositories. Additionally, the impact of prompt styles on LLM performance within a historical context remains underexplored. To address these gaps, we propose HAFix, which stands for History-Augmented LLMs on Bug Fixing, a novel approach that leverages individual historical heuristics associated with bugs and aggregates the results of these heuristics (HAFix-Agg) to enhance LLMs' bug-fixing capabilities. To empirically evaluate HAFix, we employ Code Llama on a dataset of 51 single-line bugs, sourced from 11 open-source projects, by mining the historical context data of bugs and operationalizing this context in the form of seven heuristics. Our evaluation demonstrates that historical heuristics significantly enhance bug-fixing performance. For example, the FLN-all heuristic achieves a 10% improvement in performance compared to a non-historical baseline inspired by GitHub Copilot. Furthermore, HAFix-Agg fixes 45% more bugs than the baseline, outperforming FLN-all and demonstrating the best performance overall. Moreover, within the context of historical heuristics, we identify the Instruction style prompt as the most effective template for LLMs in bug fixing. Finally, we provide a pragmatic trade-off analysis of bug-fixing performance, cost, and time efficiency, offering valuable insights for the practical deployment of our approach in real-world scenarios., Comment: 55 pages, 18 figures

Correlation-driven metal-insulator transitions and temperature-driven quantum-coherent-to-incoherent crossovers in correlated electron systems underpin the doping, temperature and frequency-resolved evolution of physical responses. Motivated by recent experimental studies that investigate the evolution of dynamical spin and charge responses, we analyze the spin and charge diffusion spectra in both half-filled and doped one-band Hubbard model using Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) combined with the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG). We compare the relative strengths and limitations of Density Matrix NRG (DMNRG) and Full Density Matrix NRG (FDM-NRG) in capturing low-frequency spectral features and their evolution with temperature, interaction strength and band-filling. Key measures, including characteristic frequency scales, Kullback-Leibler divergence, diffusion constants, and kurtosis provide complementary but internally consistent picture for the evolution of spin and charge excitations across bandwidth as well as the band-filling driven Mott transitions and the coherent-incoherent crossover. We find that spin and charge fluctuations cross over from quantum-coherent-to-quantum-incoherent at distinct temperatures, providing a microscopic insight into the complex, two-stage, Fermi-to-non-Fermi liquid-to-bad metal crossovers seen in transport data, in particular in the $dc$ resistivity.

Safety is the main concern in the aviation industry, where even minor operational issues can lead to serious consequences. This study addresses the need for comprehensive aviation accident analysis by leveraging natural language processing (NLP) and advanced AI models to classify the phase of flight from unstructured aviation accident analysis narratives. The research aims to determine whether the phase of flight can be inferred from narratives of post-accident events using NLP techniques. The classification performance of various deep learning models was evaluated. For single RNN-based models, LSTM achieved an accuracy of 63%, precision 60%, and recall 61%. BiLSTM recorded an accuracy of 64%, precision 63%, and a recall of 64%. GRU exhibited balanced performance with an accuracy and recall of 60% and a precision of 63%. Joint RNN-based models further enhanced predictive capabilities. GRU-LSTM, LSTM-BiLSTM, and GRU-BiLSTM demonstrated accuracy rates of 62%, 67%, and 60%, respectively, showcasing the benefits of combining these architectures. To provide a comprehensive overview of model performance, single and combined models were compared in terms of the various metrics. These results underscore the models' capacity to classify the phase of flight from raw text narratives, equipping aviation industry stakeholders with valuable insights for proactive decision-making. Aviation safety is paramount, demanding precise analysis of safety occurrences during different flight phases. This study employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning models, including LSTM, CNN, Bidirectional LSTM (BLSTM), and simple Recurrent Neural Networks (sRNN), to classify flight phases in safety reports from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). The models exhibited high accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores, with LSTM achieving the highest performance of 87%, 88%, 87%, and 88%, respectively. Aviation safety is a global concern, requiring detailed investigations into incidents to understand contributing factors comprehensively. This study uses the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) dataset. It applies advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (pLSA), and K-means clustering. The main objectives are identifying latent themes, exploring semantic relationships, assessing probabilistic connections, and cluster incidents based on shared characteristics. This research contributes to aviation safety by providing insights into incident narratives and demonstrating the versatility of NLP and topic modelling techniques in extracting valuable information from complex datasets. The results, including topics identified from various techniques, provide an understanding of recurring themes. Comparative analysis reveals that LDA performed best with a coherence value of 0.597, pLSA of 0.583, LSA of 0.542, and NMF of 0.437. K-means clustering further reveals commonalities and unique insights into incident narratives. In conclusion, this study uncovers latent patterns and thematic structures within incident narratives, offering a comparative analysis of multiple-topic modelling techniques. Future research avenues include exploring temporal patterns, incorporating additional datasets, and developing predictive models for early identification of safety issues. This research lays the groundwork for enhancing the understanding and improvement of aviation safety by utilising the wealth of information embedded in incident narratives.

Hate speech and abusive language are global phenomena that need socio-cultural background knowledge to be understood, identified, and moderated. However, in many regions of the Global South, there have been several documented occurrences of (1) absence of moderation and (2) censorship due to the reliance on keyword spotting out of context. Further, high-profile individuals have frequently been at the center of the moderation process, while large and targeted hate speech campaigns against minorities have been overlooked. These limitations are mainly due to the lack of high-quality data in the local languages and the failure to include local communities in the collection, annotation, and moderation processes. To address this issue, we present AfriHate: a multilingual collection of hate speech and abusive language datasets in 15 African languages. Each instance in AfriHate is annotated by native speakers familiar with the local culture. This document contains a guide on how to use the Qudit Cirq library, an extension of Google's Cirq library for qudits. While Cirq provides necessary building blocks for quantum computation on qudits, the gates, curcuits and simulation of qudit systems need to be developed from scratch. Our extension to the Cirq library has built-in methods for creating qudits, applying common qudit gates, building circuits and simulating quantum computation on these circuits. We report the modeling of the millimeter and far-infrared spectral energy distributions of 71 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) with a lower flux-density limit of 8 mJy at 220 GHz (1.4 mm). All sources were cross-identified with Herschel surveys at 500, 350, and 250 {\mu}m, and nineteen of our sources were observed at with the Submillimeter Array. A probabilistic cataloging algorithm, PCAT, favors multiple unresolved flux components in the Herschel data for the majority of ACT-selected DSFGs. We compare the derived physical properties of the DSFGs obtained from modeling the flux densities with those from similar studies of both lensed and unlensed DSFG populations. We find the median, 16th and 84th percentiles for the following model parameters: redshift zphot=3.3(+0.7)(-0.6), apparent size {\mu}d=5.2(+0.9)(-2.4) kpc, apparent dust mass log10({\mu}Md/Msun)=9.14(+0.12)(-0.04) and cutoff temperature Tc=35.6(+4.8)(-1.6) K, and the corresponding apparent far-infrared luminosity log10({\mu}LIR/Lsun)=13.6(+0.2)(-0.3), where {\mu} is lensing magnification. While many of the properties broadly agree with those of samples of primarily lensed DSFGs, we exercise caution in interpreting them. ACT's lower flux limit, the PCAT decomposition, and the higher-resolution SMA observations all suggest that some fraction of these DSFGs are likely to be unlensed and possibly multiples. The SMA data indicate that at least fourteen out of nineteen sources are such, either via "missing" flux in comparison to the ensemble model or detection of additional sources in the fields. This paper presents a novel approach to represent enterprise web application structures using Large Language Models (LLMs) to enable intelligent quality engineering at scale. We introduce a hierarchical representation methodology that optimizes the few-shot learning capabilities of LLMs while preserving the complex relationships and interactions within web applications. The approach encompasses five key phases: comprehensive DOM analysis, multi-page synthesis, test suite generation, execution, and result analysis. Our methodology addresses existing challenges around usage of Generative AI techniques in automated software testing by developing a structured format that enables LLMs to understand web application architecture through in-context learning. We evaluated our approach using two distinct web applications: an e-commerce platform (Swag Labs) and a healthcare application (MediBox) which is deployed within Atalgo engineering environment. The results demonstrate success rates of 90\% and 70\%, respectively, in achieving automated testing, with high relevance scores for test cases across multiple evaluation criteria. The air transport system recognizes the criticality of safety, as even minor anomalies can have severe consequences. Reporting accidents and incidents play a vital role in identifying their causes and proposing safety recommendations. However, the narratives describing pre-accident events are presented in unstructured text that is not easily understood by computer systems. Classifying and categorizing safety occurrences based on these narratives can support informed decision-making by aviation industry stakeholders. In this study, researchers applied natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) models to process text narratives to classify the flight phases of safety occurrences. The classification performance of two deep learning models, ResNet and sRNN was evaluated, using an initial dataset of 27,000 safety occurrence reports from the NTSB. The results demonstrated good performance, with both models achieving an accuracy exceeding 68%, well above the random guess rate of 14% for a seven-class classification problem. The models also exhibited high precision, recall, and F1 scores. The sRNN model greatly outperformed the simplified ResNet model architecture used in this study. Artificial Intelligent transformed industries, like engineering, medicine, finance. Predictive models use supervised learning, a vital Machine learning subset. Crucial for model evaluation, cross-validation includes re-substitution, hold-out, and K-fold. This study focuses on improving the accuracy of ML algorithms across three different datasets. To evaluate Hold-out, Hold-out with iteration, and K-fold Cross-Validation techniques, we created a flexible Python program. By modifying parameters like test size, Random State, and 'k' values, we were able to improve accuracy assessment. The outcomes demonstrate the Hold-out validation method's persistent superiority, particularly with a test size of 10%. With iterations and Random State settings, hold-out with iteration shows little accuracy variance. It suggests that there are variances according to algorithm, with Decision Tree doing best for Framingham and Naive Bayes and K Nearest Neighbors for COVID-19. Different datasets require different optimal K values in K-Fold Cross Validation, highlighting these considerations. This study challenges the universality of K values in K-Fold Cross Validation and suggests a 10% test size and 90% training size for better outcomes. It also emphasizes the contextual impact of dataset features, sample size, feature count, and selected methodologies. Researchers can adapt these codes for their dataset to obtain highest accuracy with specific evaluation.

Safety is a critical aspect of the air transport system given even slight operational anomalies can result in serious consequences. To reduce the chances of aviation safety occurrences, accidents and incidents are reported to establish the root cause, propose safety recommendations etc. However, analysis narratives of the pre-accident events are presented using human-understandable, raw, unstructured, text that a computer system cannot understand. The ability to classify and categorise safety occurrences from their textual narratives would help aviation industry stakeholders make informed safety-critical decisions. To classify and categorise safety occurrences, we applied natural language processing (NLP) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) models to process text narratives. The study aimed to answer the question. How well can the damage level caused to the aircraft in a safety occurrence be inferred from the text narrative using natural language processing. The classification performance of various deep learning models including LSTM, BLSTM, GRU, sRNN, and combinations of these models including LSTM and GRU, BLSTM+GRU, sRNN and LSTM, sRNN and BLSTM, sRNN and GRU, sRNN and BLSTM and GRU, and sRNN and LSTM and GRU was evaluated on a set of 27,000 safety occurrence reports from the NTSB. The results of this study indicate that all models investigated performed competitively well recording an accuracy of over 87.9% which is well above the random guess of 25% for a four-class classification problem. Also, the models recorded high precision, recall, and F1 scores above 80%, 88%, and 85%, respectively. sRNN slightly outperformed other single models in terms of recall (90%) and accuracy (90%) while LSTM reported slightly better performance in terms of precision (87%).

This work explores the deployment of active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (A-RIS) in integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (TN-NTN) while utilizing coordinated multipoint non-orthogonal multiple access (CoMP-NOMA). Our system model incorporates a UAV-assisted RIS in coordination with a terrestrial RIS which aims for signal enhancement. We aim to maximize the sum rate for all users in the network using a custom hybrid proximal policy optimization (H-PPO) algorithm by optimizing the UAV trajectory, base station (BS) power allocation factors, active RIS amplification factor, and phase shift matrix. We integrate edge users into NOMA pairs to achieve diversity gain, further enhancing the overall experience for edge users. This paper introduces AFRIDOC-MT, a document-level multi-parallel translation dataset covering English and five African languages: Amharic, Hausa, Swahili, Yor\`ub\'a, and Zulu. The dataset comprises 334 health and 271 information technology news documents, all human-translated from English to these languages. We conduct document-level translation benchmark experiments by evaluating neural machine translation (NMT) models and large language models (LLMs) for translations between English and these languages, at both the sentence and pseudo-document levels. These outputs are realigned to form complete documents for evaluation. Our results indicate that NLLB-200 achieved the best average performance among the standard NMT models, while GPT-4o outperformed general-purpose LLMs. Fine-tuning selected models led to substantial performance gains, but models trained on sentences struggled to generalize effectively to longer documents. Furthermore, our analysis reveals that some LLMs exhibit issues such as under-generation, repetition of words or phrases, and off-target translations, especially for African languages., Comment: under review

Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) based on Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technology have emerged as a promising solution for secure authentication and cryptographic applications. By leveraging the multi-level cell (MLC) characteristic of NVMs, these PUFs can generate a wide range of unique responses, enhancing their resilience to machine learning (ML) modeling attacks. However, a significant issue with NVM-based PUFs is their endurance problem; frequent write operations lead to wear and degradation over time, reducing the reliability and lifespan of the PUF. This paper addresses these issues by offering a comprehensive model to predict and analyze the effects of endurance changes on NVM PUFs. This model provides insights into how wear impacts the PUF's quality and helps in designing more robust PUFs. Building on this model, we present a novel design for NVM PUFs that significantly improves endurance. Our design approach incorporates advanced techniques to distribute write operations more evenly and reduce stress on individual cells. The result is an NVM PUF that demonstrates a $62\times$ improvement in endurance compared to current state-of-the-art solutions while maintaining protection against learning-based attacks.

General-purpose automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems do not always perform well in goal-oriented dialogue. Existing ASR correction methods rely on prior user data or named entities. We extend correction to tasks that have no prior user data and exhibit linguistic flexibility such as lexical and syntactic variations. We propose a novel context augmentation with a large language model and a ranking strategy that incorporates contextual information from the dialogue states of a goal-oriented conversational AI and its tasks. Our method ranks (1) n-best ASR hypotheses by their lexical and semantic similarity with context and (2) context by phonetic correspondence with ASR hypotheses. Evaluated in home improvement and cooking domains with real-world users, our method improves recall and F1 of correction by 34% and 16%, respectively, while maintaining precision and false positive rate. Traffic flow prediction remains a cornerstone for intelligent transportation systems ITS, influencing both route optimization and environmental efforts. While Recurrent Neural Networks RNN and traditional Convolutional Neural Networks CNN offer some insights into the spatial temporal dynamics of traffic data, they are often limited when navigating sparse and extended spatial temporal patterns. In response, the CNN-GRUSKIP model emerges as a pioneering approach. Notably, it integrates the GRU-SKIP mechanism, a hybrid model that leverages the Gate Recurrent Unit of GRU capabilities to process sequences with the SKIP feature of ability to bypass and connect longer temporal dependencies, making it especially potent for traffic flow predictions with erratic and extended patterns. Another distinctive aspect is its non-standard 6-layer CNN, meticulously designed for in-depth spatiotemporal correlation extraction. The model comprises (1) the specialized CNN feature extraction, (2) the GRU-SKIP enhanced long-temporal module adept at capturing extended patterns, (3) a transformer module employing encoder-decoder and multi-attention mechanisms to hone prediction accuracy and trim model complexity, and (4) a bespoke prediction module. When tested against real-world datasets from California of Caltrans Performance Measurement System PeMS, specifically PeMS districts 4 and 8, the CNN-GRUSKIP consistently outperformed established models such as ARIMA, Graph Wave Net, HA, LSTM, STGCN, and APTN. Stress can increase the possibility of cognitive impairment and decrease the quality of life in older adults. Smart healthcare can deploy quantum machine learning to enable preventive and diagnostic support. This work introduces a unique technique to address stress detection as an anomaly detection problem that uses quantum hybrid support vector machines. With the help of a wearable smartwatch, we mapped baseline sensor reading as normal data and stressed sensor reading as anomaly data using cortisol concentration as the ground truth. We have used quantum computing techniques to explore the complex feature spaces with kernel-based preprocessing. We illustrate the usefulness of our method by doing experimental validation on 40 older adults with the help of the TSST protocol. Our findings highlight that using a limited number of features, quantum machine learning provides improved accuracy compared to classical methods. We also observed that the recall value using quantum machine learning is higher compared to the classical method. The higher recall value illustrates the potential of quantum machine learning in healthcare, as missing anomalies could result in delayed diagnostics or treatment.

Purpose: Quantum computing promises to transform problem-solving across various domains with rapid and practical solutions. Within Software Evolution and Maintenance, Quantum Machine Learning (QML) remains mostly an underexplored domain, particularly in addressing challenges such as detecting buggy software commits from code repositories. Methods: In this study, we investigate the practical application of Quantum Support Vector Classifiers (QSVC) for detecting buggy software commits across 14 open-source software projects with diverse dataset sizes encompassing 30,924 data instances. We compare the QML algorithm PQSVC (Pegasos QSVC) and QSVC against the classical Support Vector Classifier (SVC). Our technique addresses large datasets in QSVC algorithms by dividing them into smaller subsets. We propose and evaluate an aggregation method to combine predictions from these models to detect the entire test dataset. We also introduce an incremental testing methodology to overcome the difficulties of quantum feature mapping during the testing approach. Results: The study shows the effectiveness of QSVC and PQSVC in detecting buggy software commits. The aggregation technique successfully combines predictions from smaller data subsets, enhancing the overall detection accuracy for the entire test dataset. The incremental testing methodology effectively manages the challenges associated with quantum feature mapping during the testing process. Conclusion: We contribute to the advancement of QML algorithms in defect prediction, unveiling the potential for further research in this domain. Silicon vacancy centers in 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) host a long-lived electronic spin and simultaneously possess spin-resolved optical transitions, making them a great candidate for implementing a spin-photon interface. These interfaces are an important building block of quantum networks, which in turn promise to enable secure communication and distributed quantum computing. To achieve this goal, the rate of coherently scattered photons collected from a single emitter needs to be maximized, which can be achieved by interfacing the emitter with an optical cavity. In this work, we integrate V2 centers inside a SiC membrane into a fiber-based Fabry-P\'erot microcavity. We find that SiC lends itself well to membrane fabrication, as evidenced by low surface roughness $\sigma_{\mathrm{RMS}}$ ~ 400 pm, high reproducibility, and consequentially a high cavity finesse F ~ 40 000. At cryogenic temperatures, we observe individual emitters coupling to cavity modes. We confirm their single-emitter character by measuring the second-order autocorrelation function and investigate the Purcell factor by measuring the optical lifetime as a function of the cavity-emitter detuning. We find a 13.3-fold enhancement of photons scattered into the zero-phonon line (ZPL), which could be further increased by using optimized mirror coatings, potentially opening the path towards deterministic spin-photon interaction.

Regularized estimation of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters, such as attenuation and backscatter coefficients, has gained research interest. Recently, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) has been applied successfully to estimate these parameters, by utilizing L2 and L1 norms for attenuation and backscatter coefficient regularization, respectively. While this method improves upon previous approaches, it does not fully leverage the prior knowledge of minimum physically feasible parameter values, sometimes yielding values outside the realistic range. This work addresses this limitation by incorporating minimum QUS parameter values as constraints to enhance ADMM estimation. Context. The supernova remnant (SNR) W44 and its surroundings are a prime target for studying the acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs). Several previous studies established an extended gamma-ray emission that is set apart from the radio shell of W44. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs that interact with a surrounding dense molecular cloud complex. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of Fermi-LAT data with an emphasis on the spatial and spectral properties of W44 and its surroundings. We also report the results of the observations performed with the MAGIC telescopes of the northwestern region of W44. Finally, we present an interpretation model to explain the gamma-ray emission of the SNR and its surroundings. Methods. We first performed a detailed spatial analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT data at energies above 1 GeV, in order to exploit the better angular resolution, while we set a threshold of 100MeV for the spectral analysis. We performed a likelihood analysis of 174 hours of MAGIC data above 130 GeV using the spatial information obtained with Fermi-LAT. Results. The combined spectra of Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, extending from 100MeV to several TeV, were used to derive constraints on the escape of CRs. Using a time-dependent model to describe the particle acceleration and escape from the SNR, we show that the maximum energy of the accelerated particles has to be ' 40 GeV. However, our gamma-ray data suggest that a small number of lower-energy particles also needs to escape. We propose a novel model, the broken-shock scenario, to account for this effect and explain the gamma-ray emission.

Mrk 421 was in its most active state around early 2010, which led to the highest TeV gamma-ray flux ever recorded from any active galactic nuclei. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength behavior during this exceptional year for Mrk 421, and evaluate whether it is consistent with the picture derived with data from other less exceptional years. We investigated the period from November 5, 2009, (MJD 55140) until July 3, 2010, (MJD 55380) with extensive coverage from very-high-energy (VHE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$GeV) gamma rays to radio with MAGIC, VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, VLBA, and a variety of additional optical and radio telescopes. We investigated the variability and correlation behavior among different energy bands in great detail. We find the strongest variability in X-rays and VHE gamma rays, and PSDs compatible with power-law functions. We observe strong correlations between X-rays and VHE gamma rays. We also report a marginally significant positive correlation between high-energy (HE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$MeV) gamma rays and the ultraviolet band. We detected marginally significant correlations between the HE and VHE gamma rays, and between HE gamma rays and the X-ray, that disappear when the large flare in February 2010 is excluded from the correlation study. The activity of Mrk 421 also yielded the first ejection of features in the VLBA images of the jet of Mrk 421. Yet the large uncertainties in the ejection times of these radio features prevent us from firmly associating them to the specific flares recorded during the campaign. We also show that the collected multi-instrument data are consistent with a scenario where the emission is dominated by two regions, a compact and extended zone, which could be considered as a simplified implementation of an energy-stratified jet as suggested by recent IXPE observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Vision Transformers (ViTs) have shown promise in medical image semantic segmentation (MISS) by capturing long-range correlations. However, ViTs often struggle to model local spatial information effectively, which is essential for accurately segmenting fine anatomical details, particularly when applied to small datasets without extensive pre-training. We introduce Gabor and Laplacian of Gaussian Convolutional Swin Network (GLoG-CSUnet), a novel architecture enhancing Transformer-based models by incorporating learnable radiomic features. This approach integrates dynamically adaptive Gabor and Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) filters to capture texture, edge, and boundary information, enhancing the feature representation processed by the Transformer model. Our method uniquely combines the long-range dependency modeling of Transformers with the texture analysis capabilities of Gabor and LoG features. Evaluated on the Synapse multi-organ and ACDC cardiac segmentation datasets, GLoG-CSUnet demonstrates significant improvements over state-of-the-art models, achieving a 1.14% increase in Dice score for Synapse and 0.99% for ACDC, with minimal computational overhead (only 15 and 30 additional parameters, respectively). GLoG-CSUnet's flexible design allows integration with various base models, offering a promising approach for incorporating radiomics-inspired feature extraction in Transformer architectures for medical image analysis. Data encoding is a fundamental step in emerging computing paradigms, particularly in stochastic computing (SC) and hyperdimensional computing (HDC), where it plays a crucial role in determining the overall system performance and hardware cost efficiency. This study presents an advanced encoding strategy that leverages a hardware-friendly class of low-discrepancy (LD) sequences, specifically powers-of-2 bases of Van der Corput (VDC) sequences (VDC-2^n), as sources for random number generation. Our approach significantly enhances the accuracy and efficiency of SC and HDC systems by addressing challenges associated with randomness. By employing LD sequences, we improve correlation properties and reduce hardware complexity. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and energy savings for SC and HDC systems. Given the paramount importance of safety in the aviation industry, even minor operational anomalies can have significant consequences. Comprehensive documentation of incidents and accidents serves to identify root causes and propose safety measures. However, the unstructured nature of incident event narratives poses a challenge for computer systems to interpret. Our study aimed to leverage Natural Language Processing (NLP) and deep learning models to analyze these narratives and classify the aircraft damage level incurred during safety occurrences. Through the implementation of LSTM, BLSTM, GRU, and sRNN deep learning models, our research yielded promising results, with all models showcasing competitive performance, achieving an accuracy of over 88% significantly surpassing the 25% random guess threshold for a four-class classification problem. Notably, the sRNN model emerged as the top performer in terms of recall and accuracy, boasting a remarkable 89%. These findings underscore the potential of NLP and deep learning models in extracting actionable insights from unstructured text narratives, particularly in evaluating the extent of aircraft damage within the realm of aviation safety occurrences.

Improvements in aviation safety analysis call for innovative techniques to extract valuable insights from the abundance of textual data available in accident reports. This paper explores the application of four prominent topic modelling techniques, namely Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (pLSA), Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), and Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), to dissect aviation incident narratives using the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) dataset. The proxy pattern is a well-known design pattern with numerous use cases in several sectors of the software industry. As such, the use of the proxy pattern is also a common approach in the development of complex decentralized applications (DApps) on the Ethereum blockchain. Despite the importance of proxy contracts, little is known about (i) how their prevalence changed over time, (ii) the ways in which developers integrate proxies in the design of DApps, and (iii) what proxy types are being most commonly leveraged by developers. This study bridges these gaps through a comprehensive analysis of Ethereum smart contracts, utilizing a dataset of 50 million contracts and 1.6 billion transactions as of September 2022. Our findings reveal that 14.2% of all deployed smart contracts are proxy contracts. We show that proxy contracts are being more actively used than non-proxy contracts. Also, the usage of proxy contracts in various contexts, transactions involving proxy contracts, and adoption of proxy contracts by users have shown an upward trend over time, peaking at the end of our study period. They are either deployed through off-chain scripts or on-chain factory contracts, with the former and latter being employed in 39.1% and 60.9% of identified usage contexts in turn. We found that while the majority (67.8%) of proxies act as an interceptor, 32.2% enables upgradeability. Proxy contracts are typically (79%) implemented based on known reference implementations with 29.4% being of type ERC-1167, a class of proxies that aims to cheaply reuse and clone contracts' functionality. Our evaluation shows that our proposed behavioral proxy detection method has a precision and recall of 100% in detecting active proxies. Finally, we derive a set of practical recommendations for developers and introduce open research questions to guide future research on the topic.

Software applications that run on a blockchain platform are known as DApps. DApps are built using smart contracts, which are immutable after deployment. Just like any real-world software system, DApps need to receive new features and bug fixes over time in order to remain useful and secure. However, Ethereum lacks native solutions for post-deployment smart contract maintenance, requiring developers to devise their own methods. A popular method is known as the upgradeability proxy contract (UPC), which involves implementing the proxy design pattern (as defined by the Gang of Four). In this method, client calls first hit a proxy contract, which then delegates calls to a certain implementation contract. Most importantly, the proxy contract can be reconfigured during runtime to delegate calls to another implementation contract, effectively enabling application upgrades. For researchers, the accurate detection of UPCs is a strong requirement in the understanding of how exactly real-world DApps are maintained over time. For practitioners, the accurate detection of UPCs is crucial for providing application behavior transparency and enabling auditing. In this paper, we introduce UPC Sentinel, a novel three-layer algorithm that utilizes both static and dynamic analysis of smart contract bytecode to accurately detect active UPCs. We evaluated UPC Sentinel using two distinct ground truth datasets. In the first dataset, our method demonstrated a near-perfect accuracy of 99%. The evaluation on the second dataset further established our method's efficacy, showing a perfect precision rate of 100% and a near-perfect recall of 99.3%, outperforming the state of the art.
