The attractive interaction in conventional BCS superconductors is provided by a bosonic mode. However, the pairing glue of most unconventional superconductors is unknown. The effect of electron-boson coupling is therefore extensively studied in these materials. A key signature are dispersion kinks that can be observed in the spectral function as abrupt changes in velocity and lifetime of quasiparticles. Here, we show the existence of two kinks in the unconventional iron-based superconductor RbFe$_2$As$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). In addition, we observe the formation of a Hubbard band multiplet due to the combination of Coulomb interaction and Hund's rule coupling in this multiorbital systems. We demonstrate that the two dispersion kinks are a consequence of these strong many-body interactions. This interpretation is in line with a growing number of theoretical predictions for kinks in various general models of correlated materials. Our results provide a unifying link between iron-based superconductors and different classes of correlated, unconventional superconductors such as cuprates and heavy-fermion materials.

Recent experiments suggest a new paradigm towards novel colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in a family of materials EuM$_2$X$_2$(M=Cd, In, Zn; X=P, As), distinct from the traditional avenues involving Kondo-RKKY crossovers, magnetic phase transitions with structural distortions, or topological phase transitions. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore their origin, particularly focusing on EuCd$_2$P$_2$. While the low-energy spectral weight royally tracks that of the resistivity anomaly near the temperature with maximum magnetoresistance (T$_{MR}$) as expected from transport-spectroscopy correspondence, the spectra are completely incoherent and strongly suppressed with no hint of a Landau quasiparticle. Using systematic material and temperature dependence investigation complemented by theory, we attribute this non-quasiparticle caricature to the strong presence of entangled magnetic and lattice interactions, a characteristic enabled by the $p$-$f$ mixing. Given the known presence of ferromagnetic clusters, this naturally points to the origin of CMR being the scattering of spin-polarized polarons at the boundaries of ferromagnetic clusters. These results are not only illuminating to investigate the strong correlations and topology in EuCd$_2$X$_2$ family, but, in a broader view, exemplify how multiple cooperative interactions can give rise to extraordinary behaviors in condensed matter systems.

Bismuth antimony alloys (Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$) provide a tuneable materials platform to study topological transport and spin-polarized surface states resulting from the nontrivial bulk electronic structure. In the two-dimensional limit, it is a suitable system to study the quantum spin Hall effect. In this work we grow epitaxial, single orientation thin films of Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$ on an InSb(111)B substrate down to two bilayers where hybridization effects should gap out the topological surface states. Supported by a tight-binding model, spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data shows pockets at the Fermi level from the topological surface states disappear as the bulk gap increases from confinement. Evidence for a gap opening in the topological surface states is shown in the ultrathin limit. Finally, we observe spin-polarization approaching unity from the topological surface states in 10 bilayer films. The growth and characterization of ultrathin Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$ alloys suggest ultrathin films of this material system can be used to study two-dimensional topological physics as well as applications such as topological devices, low power electronics, and spintronics., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

In most of charge density wave (CDW) systems of different material classes, ranging from traditional correlated systems in low-dimension to recent topological systems with Kagome lattice, superconductivity emerges when the system is driven toward the quantum critical point (QCP) of CDW via external parameters of doping and pressure. Despite this rather universal trend, the essential hinge between CDW and superconductivity has not been established yet. Here, the evidence of coupling between electron and CDW fluctuation is reported, based on a temperature- and intercalation-dependent kink in the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of 2H-PdxTaSe2. Kinks are observed only when the system is in the CDW phase, regardless of whether a long- or short-range order is established. Notably, the coupling strength is enhanced upon long-range CDW suppression, albeit the coupling energy scale is reduced. Interestingly, estimation of the superconducting critical temperature by incorporating the observed coupling characteristics into McMillan's equation yields result closely resembling the known values of the superconducting dome. Our results thus highlight a compelling possibility that this new coupling mediates Cooper pairs, which provides new insights on the competing relationship not only for CDW, but also for other competing orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures for the main text. Spin- and charge-lattice interactions are potential key factors in the microscopic mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Although both interactions can dramatically shape the low-energy electronic structure, their phenomenological roles in superconductivity are usually investigated independently. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the spectroscopic fingerprint of short-range antiferromagnetic order in conjunction with enhanced electron-phonon interaction in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor $\mathrm{Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4}$. The observed mode coupling exhibits a strong momentum dependence that is in striking contrast to the node-antinode dichotomy previously observed in the hole-doped cuprates. Our results reveal an intimate relationship between electron-phonon coupling and antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which collectively sets the stage for unconventional superconductivity in the electron-doped cuprates.

The relative role of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions in driving the metal-insulator transition in perovskite nickelates opens a rare window into the non-trivial interplay of the two important degrees of freedom in solids. The most promising solution is to extract the electronic and lattice contributions during the phase transition by performing high-resolution spectroscopy measurements. Here, we present a three-dimensional electronic structure study of Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0 and 0.175) thin films with unprecedented accuracy, in which the low energy fermiology has a quantitative agreement with model simulations and first-principles calculations. Two characteristic phonons, the octahedral rotational and breathing modes, are illustrated to be coupled with the electron dynamics in the metallic phase, showing a kink structure along the band dispersion, as well as a hump feature in the energy spectrum. Entering the insulating state, the electron-phonon interaction is amplified by strong electron correlations, transforming the mobile large polarons at high temperatures to localized small polarons in the ground state. Moreover, the analysis of quasiparticle residue enables us to establish a transport-spectroscopy correspondence in Nd1-xSrxNiO3 thin films. Our findings demonstrate the essential role of electron-lattice interaction enhanced by the electronic correlation to stabilize the insulating phase in the perovskite nickelates., Comment: 26 pages, 4 + 7 figures

The magnetic skyrmions generated in a centrosymmetric crystal were recently first discovered in Gd2PdSi3. In light of this, we observe the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and unveil its direct relationship with the magnetism in this compound. The Fermi surface and band dispersions are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations carried out with careful consideration of the crystal superstructure. Most importantly, we find that the three-dimensional Fermi surface has extended nesting which matches well the q-vector of the magnetic order detected by recent scattering measurements. The consistency we find among ARPES, DFT, and the scattering measurements suggests the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction involving itinerant electrons to be the formation mechanism of skyrmions in Gd2PdSi3.

Moir\'e superlattices, engineered through precise stacking of van der Waals (vdW) layers, hold immense promise for exploring strongly correlated and topological phenomena. However, these applications have been held back by the common preparation method: tear-and-stack of Scotch tape exfoliated monolayers. It has low efficiency and reproducibility, along with challenges of twist angle inhomogeneity, interfacial contamination, micrometer sizes, and a tendency to untwist at elevated temperatures. Here we report an effective strategy to construct highly consistent vdW moir\'e structures with high production throughput, near-unity yield, pristine interfaces, precisely controlled twist angles, and macroscopic scale (up to centimeters) with enhanced thermal stability. We further demonstrate the versatility across various vdW materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hBN. The expansive size and high quality of moir\'e structures enables high-resolution mapping of the reciprocal space back-folded lattices and moir\'e mini band structures with low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ has attracted much recent attention due to the coexistence of multiple exotic orders and the associated proposals to mimic unconventional high temperature superconductors. Nevertheless, magnetism and strong electronic correlations -- two essential ingredients for unconventional superconductivity, are absent in this V-based Kagome metal. CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$ is a newly discovered Cr-based parallel of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, in which magnetism appears with charge density wave and superconductivity at different temperature and pressure regions. Enhanced electronic correlations are also suggested by theoretical proposals due to the calculated flat bands. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission measurements and first-principles calculations on this new material system. Electron energy bands and the associated orbitals are resolved. Flat bands are observed near the Fermi level. Doping dependent measurements on Cs(Cr$_x$V$_{1-x}$)$_3$Sb$_5$ reveal a gradually enhanced band renormalization from CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ to CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$, accompanied by distinct spatial symmetry breaking states in the phase diagram.

In the quest for novel quantum states driven by topology and correlation, kagome lattice materials have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive electronic band structures, featuring flat bands (FBs) arising from the quantum destructive interference of the electronic wave function. The tuning of the FBs to the chemical potential would lead to the possibility of liberating electronic instabilities that lead to emergent electronic orders. Despite extensive studies, direct evidence of FBs tuned to the chemical potential and their participation in emergent electronic orders have been lacking in bulk quantum materials. Here using a combination of Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Density Functional Theory (DFT), we reveal that the low-energy electronic structure of the recently discovered Cr-based kagome metal superconductor CsCr3Sb5 is dominated by a pervasive FB in close proximity to, and below the Fermi level. A comparative analysis with orbital-projected DFT and polarization dependence measurement uncovers that an orbital-selective renormalization mechanism is needed to reconcile the discrepancy with the DFT calculations, which predict the FB to appear 200 meV above the Fermi level. Furthermore, we observe the FB to shift away from the Fermi level by 20 meV in the low-temperature density wave-ordered phase, highlighting the role of the FB in the emergent electronic order. Our results reveal CsCr3Sb5 to stand out as a promising platform for further exploration into the effects of FBs near the Fermi level on kagome lattices, and their role in emergent orders in bulk quantum materials.

Kagome materials exhibit many novel phenomena emerging from the interplay between lattice geometry, electronic structure, and topology. A prime example is the vanadium-based kagome materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with superconductivity and unconventional charge-density wave (CDW). More interestingly, the substitution of vanadium by chromium further introduces magnetism and enhances the correlation effect in CsCr3Sb5 which likewise exhibits superconductivity under pressure and competing density-wave state. Here we systematically investigate the electronic structure of CsCr3Sb5 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) and ab-initio calculations. Overall, the measured electronic structure agrees with the theoretical calculation. Remarkably, Cr 3d orbitals exhibit incoherent electronic states and contribute to incipient flat bands close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure shows a minor change across the magnetic transition at 55 K, suggesting a weak interplay between the local magnetic moment and itinerant electrons. Furthermore, we reveal a drastic enhancement of the electron scattering rate across the magnetic transition, which is relevant to the semiconducting-like transport property of the system at high temperatures. Our results suggest that CsCr3Sb5 is a strongly correlated Hund's metal with incipient flat bands near the Fermi level, which provides an electronic basis for understanding its novel properties in comparison to the non-magnetic and weakly correlated AV3Sb5.

Manipulating solids using the time-periodic drive of a laser pulse is a promising route to generate new phases of matter. Whether such `Floquet-Bloch' manipulation can be achieved in topological magnetic systems with disorder has so far been unclear. In this work, we realize Floquet-Bloch manipulation of the Dirac surface-state mass of the topological antiferromagnet (AFM) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES), we show that opposite helicities of mid-infrared circularly polarized light result in substantially different Dirac mass gaps in the AFM phase, despite the equilibrium Dirac cone being massless. We explain our findings in terms of a Dirac fermion with a random mass. Our results underscore Floquet-Bloch manipulation as a powerful tool for controlling topology even in the presence of disorder, and for uncovering properties of materials that may elude conventional probes.

The discovery of the charge density wave order (CDW) within a magnetically ordered phase in the kagome lattice FeGe has provided a promising platform to investigate intertwined degrees of freedom in kagome lattices. Recently, a method based on post-annealing has been suggested to manipulate the CDW order in kagome FeGe towards either long-range or suppressed orders. Here, we provide a comprehensive comparison of the experimentally measured electronic structures of FeGe crystals that have undergone different post-annealing procedures and demonstrate the remarkable effectiveness on tuning the CDW gap without strong perturbation on the underlying electronic structure. Moreover, we observe an additional low temperature transition that only appears in crystals with a long-range CDW order, which we associate with a lattice-spin coupled order. Our work indicates a likely strong sensitivity of the CDW order to disorder in FeGe, and provides evidence for strong coupling between the electronic, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this kagome magnet.

The surface and bulk states in topological materials have shown promise in many applications. Grey or $\alpha$-Sn, the inversion symmetric analogue to HgTe, can exhibit a variety of these phases. However there is disagreement in both calculation and experiment over the exact shape of the bulk bands and the number and origin of the surface states. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission we investigate the bulk and surface electronic structure of $\alpha$-Sn thin films on InSb(001) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that there is no significant warping in the shapes of the bulk bands. We also observe the presence of only two surface states near the valence band maximum in both thin (13 bilayer) and thick (400 bilayer) films. In 50 bilayer films, these two surface states coexist with quantum well states. Surprisingly, both of these surface states are spin-polarized with orthogonal spin-momentum locking and opposite helicities. One of these states is the spin-polarized topological surface state and the other a spin resonance. Finally, the presence of another orthogonal spin-momentum locked topological surface state from a secondary band inversion is verified. Our work clarifies the electronic structure of $\alpha$-Sn(001) such that better control of the electronic properties can be achieved. In addition, the presence of two spin-polarized surface states near the valence band maximum has important ramifications for the use of $\alpha$-Sn in spintronics.

Recent studies of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ have identified a bilayer (2222) structure and an unexpected alternating monolayer-trilayer (1313) structure, both of which feature signatures of superconductivity near 80 K under high pressures. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we measure the electronic structure of 1313 samples. In contrast to the previously studied 2222 structure, we find that the 1313 structure hosts a flat band with a markedly different binding energy, as well as an additional electron pocket and band splittings. By comparison to local-density approximation calculations, we find renormalizations of the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ and Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ derived bands to be about 5 to 7 and about 4 respectively, suggesting strong correlation effects. These results reveal important differences in the electronic structure brought about by the distinct structural motifs with the same stoichiometry. Such differences may be relevant to the putative high temperature superconductivity., Comment: Version 2: Improved data quality of the small electron pocket at the zone center ($\epsilon$ band). The opening of an energy gap in the electronic structure generally indicates the presence of interactions. In materials with low carrier density and short screening length, long-range Coulomb interaction favors the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs, so-called excitons, opening an excitonic gap at the Fermi level. Excitonic materials host unique phenomenons associated with pair excitations. However, there is still no generally recognized single-crystal material with excitonic order, which is, therefore, awaited in condensed matter physics. Here, we show that excitonic states may exist in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$, which has an almost ideal Dirac-like band structure, with Dirac point located exactly at Fermi level. We find that an energy gap appears at 350 K, and it grows with decreasing temperature. The spontaneous gap opening is absent in a similar material Ta$_2$Ni$_3$Te$_5$. Intriguingly, the gap is destroyed by the potassium deposition on the crystal, likely due to extra-doped carriers. Furthermore, we observe a pair of in-gap flat bands, which is an analog of the impurity states in a superconducting gap. All these observations can be properly explained by an excitonic order, providing Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ as a new and promising candidate realizing excitonic states., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The two-dimensional (2D) material Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ is a member of the class of insulating van der Waals magnets. Here, using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a detailed temperature dependence study, we identify a clear response of the electronic structure to a dimensional crossover in the form of two distinct temperature scales marking onsets of modifications in the electronic structure. Specifically, we observe Te $p$-orbital-dominated bands to undergo changes at the Curie transition temperature T$_C$ while the Cr $d$-orbital-dominated bands begin evolving at a higher temperature scale. Combined with neutron scattering, density functional theory calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the electronic system can be consistently understood to respond sequentially to the distinct temperatures at which in-plane and out-of-plane spin correlations exceed a characteristic length scale. Our findings reveal the sensitivity of the orbital-selective electronic structure for probing the dynamical evolution of local moment correlations in vdW insulating magnets., Comment: PRB, in press

A two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator exhibits one-dimensional gapless spin-filtered edge channels allowing for dissipationless transport of charge and spin. However, the sophisticated fabrication requirement of two-dimensional materials and the low capacity of one-dimensional channels hinder the broadening applications. We introduce a method to manipulate a three-dimensional topological material to host a large number of one-dimensional topological edge channels utilizing surface anisotropy. Taking ZrTe5 as a model system, we realize a highly anisotropic surface due to the synergistic effect of the lattice geometry and Coulomb interaction, and achieve massive one-dimensional topological edge channels -- confirmed by electronic characterization using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, in combination with first-principles calculations. Our work provides a new avenue to engineer the topological properties of three-dimensional materials through nanoscale tunning of surface morphology and opens up a promising prospect for the development of low-power-consumption electronic nano devices based on one-dimensional topological edge channels.

Electronic correlation effects are manifested in quantum materials when either the onsite Coulomb repulsion is large or the electron kinetic energy is small. The former is the dominant effect in the cuprate superconductors or heavy fermion systems while the latter in twisted bilayer graphene or geometrically frustrated metals. However, the simultaneous cooperation of both effects in the same quantum material--the design principle to produce a correlated topological flat bands pinned at the Fermi level--remains rare. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of a flat band at the Fermi level in a 3$d$ pyrochlore metal CuV$_2$S$_4$. From a combination of first-principles calculations and slave-spin calculations, we understand the origin of this band to be a destructive quantum-interference effect associated with the V pyrochlore sublattice and further renormalization to the Fermi level by electron interactions in the partially filled V $t_{2g}$ orbitals. As a result, we find transport behavior that indicates a deviation from Fermi-liquid behavior as well as a large Sommerfeld coefficient. Our work demonstrates the pathway into correlated topology by constructing and pinning correlated flat bands near the Fermi level out of a pure $d$-electron system by the combined cooperation of local Coulomb interactions and geometric frustration in a pyrochlore lattice system., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Nature Physics

BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is a structural analog of the pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which, like the iron-based superconductors, hosts a variety of ordered phases including charge density waves (CDWs), electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Upon isovalent Sr substitution on the Ba site, the charge and nematic orders are suppressed, followed by a sixfold enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). To understand the mechanisms responsible for enhancement of $T_c$, we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of the Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$Ni$_2$As$_2$ series, which agree well with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the substitution range. Analysis of our ARPES-validated DFT results indicates a Lifshitz transition and reasonably nested electron and hole Fermi pockets near optimal substitution where $T_c$ is maximum. These nested pockets host Ni $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ orbital compositions, which we associate with the enhancement of nematic fluctuations, revealing unexpected connections to the iron-pnictide superconductors. This gives credence to a scenario in which nematic fluctuations drive an enhanced $T_c$., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

In the underdoped n-type cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4, long-ranged antiferromagnetic order reconstructs the Fermi surface, resulting in a putative antiferromagnetic metal with small pockets. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe an anomalous energy gap, an order of magnitude smaller than the antiferromagnetic gap, in a wide range of the underdoped regime and smoothly connecting to the superconducting gap at optimal doping. After carefully considering all the known ordering tendencies in tandem with the phase diagram, we hypothesize that the normal state gap in the underdoped n-type cuprates originates from Cooper pairing. The high temperature scale of the normal state gap raises the prospect of engineering higher transition temperatures in the n-type cuprates comparable to that of the p-type cuprates.

During a band-gap-tuned semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes can cause spontaneously formed excitons near the zero-band-gap point, or the Lifshitz transition point. This has become an important route to realize bulk excitonic insulators -- an insulating ground state distinct from single-particle band insulators. How this route manifests from weak to strong coupling is not clear. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), we investigate the broken symmetry state across the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition in a leading bulk excitonic insulator candidate system Ta2Ni(Se,S)5. A broken symmetry phase is found to be continuously suppressed from the semimetal side to the semiconductor side, contradicting the anticipated maximal excitonic instability around the Lifshitz transition. Bolstered by first-principles and model calculations, we find strong interband electron-phonon coupling to play a crucial role in the enhanced symmetry breaking on the semimetal side of the phase diagram. Our results not only provide insight into the longstanding debate of the nature of intertwined orders in Ta2NiSe5, but also establish a basis for exploring band-gap-tuned structural and electronic instabilities in strongly coupled systems., Comment: 27 pages, 4 + 9 figures

The Fe intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), Fe$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, exhibits remarkable resistance switching properties and highly tunable spin ordering phases due to magnetic defects. We conduct synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements on both under-intercalated ($x$ = 0.32) and over-intercalated ($x$ = 0.35) samples. We discover a new charge order phase in the over-intercalated sample, where the excess Fe atoms lead to a zigzag antiferromagnetic order. The agreement between the charge and magnetic ordering temperatures, as well as their intensity relationship, suggests a strong magnetoelastic coupling as the mechanism for the charge ordering. Our results reveal the first example of a charge order phase among the intercalated TMD family and demonstrate the ability to stabilize charge modulation by introducing electronic correlations, where the charge order is absent in bulk 2H-NbS$_2$ compared to other pristine TMDs.

In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, electron-doped cuprates consistently exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlations with a commensurate ({\pi}, {\pi}) ordering wave vector, leading to the prevalent belief that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations mediate Cooper pairing in these unconventional superconductors. However, early investigations produced two paradoxical findings: while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations create the largest pseudogap at "hot spots" in momentum space, Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements using the leading-edge method seem to suggest the superconducting gap is also maximized at these locations. This presented a dilemma for spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing: Cooper pairing is strongest at momenta where normal state low energy spectral weight is most suppressed. Here we investigate this dilemma in Nd2-xCexCuO4 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy under significantly improved experimental conditions. The unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio and resolution allow us to directly observe the Bogoliubov quasiparticles, demonstrating the existence and importance of two sectors of states: 1. The reconstructed main band and the states gapped by the antiferromagnetic pseudogap around the hot spots. 2. The gossamer Fermi surface states with distinct dispersion inside the pseudogap, from which Bogoliubov quasiparticle coherence peaks emerge below Tc. Supported by numerical results, we propose that the non-zero modulus of the antiferromagnetic order parameter causes the former, while fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic order parameter orientation are responsible for the latter. Skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric materials are believed to occur due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In contrast, the skyrmion formation mechanism in centrosymmetric materials remains elusive. Among those, Gd-based compounds are the prototype compounds; however, their electronic structure is not uncovered, even though it should be the foundation for elucidating the skyrmion mechanism. Here, we reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of GdRu2Si2 for the first time by magnetic domain selective measurements of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In particular, we find the robust Fermi surface (FS) nesting, consistent with the q-vector detected by the previous resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) measurements. Most importantly, we find that the pseudogap is opened at the nested portions of FS at low temperatures. The momentum locations of the pseudogap vary for different magnetic domains, most likely having a direct relationship with the screw-type spin modulation that changes direction for each domain. Intriguingly, the anomalous pseudogap disconnects the FS to generate Fermi arcs with 2-fold symmetry. These results indicate the significance of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, in which itinerant electrons mediate to stabilize the local magnetic moment, as the mechanism for the magnetism in the Gd-based skyrmion magnets. Our data also predict that the momentum space where the pseudogap opens is doubled (or Fermi arcs shrink) and thereby stabilizes the skyrmion phase under a magnetic field. Furthermore, we demonstrate the flexible nature of magnetism in GdRu2Si2 by manipulating magnetic domains with a magnetic field and temperature cyclings, providing a possibility of future application for data storage and processing device with centrosymmetric skyrmion magnets.

The ability to reversibly toggle between two distinct states in a non-volatile method is important for information storage applications. Such devices have been realized for phase-change materials, which utilizes local heating methods to toggle between a crystalline and an amorphous state with distinct electrical properties. To expand such kind of switching between two topologically distinct phases requires non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely-related crystal structures with remarkably distinct electronic structures in the near room temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_{5-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. From a combination of characterization techniques we show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of an Fe site vacancy that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases that can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. Furthermore, from symmetry analysis as well as first principle calculations, we provide understanding of the key distinction in the observed electronic structures of the two phases: topological nodal lines compatible with the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, and flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite crystaline lattice formed by the presence of the site order as well as the lifting of the topological degeneracy due to the broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase. Our work not only reveals a rich variety of quantum phases emergent in the metallic van der Waals ferromagnets due to the presence of site ordering, but also demonstrates the potential of these highly tunable two-dimensional magnets for memory and spintronics applications.

Van Hove singularity (VHS) has been considered as a driving source for unconventional superconductivity. A VHS in two-dimensional (2D) materials consists of a saddle point connecting electron-like and hole-like bands. In a rare case, when a VHS appears at Fermi level, both electron-like and hole-like conduction can coexist, giving rise to an enhanced density of states as well as an attractive component of Coulomb interaction for unconventional electronic pairing. However, this van Hove scenario is often destroyed by an incorrect chemical potential or competing instabilities. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we report the observation of a VHS perfectly aligned with the Fermi level in a kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ta$_x$Sb$_5$ (x~0.4), in which a record-high superconducting transition temperature is achieved among all the current variants of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=Cs, Rb, K) at ambient pressure. Doping dependent measurements reveal the important role of van Hove scenario in boosting superconductivity, and spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy measurements indicate a distinct superconducting state in this system., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted considerable attention recently for both fundamental understanding of magnetism and their tunability towards device applications. The isostructural Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and Fe$_3$GaTe$_2$ are two members of the Fe-based van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet family, but exhibit very different Curie temperatures (T$_C$) of 210 K and 360 K, respectively. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory, we systematically compare the electronic structures of the two compounds. Qualitative similarities in the Fermi surface can be found between the two compounds, with expanded hole pockets in Fe$_3$GaTe$_2$ suggesting additional hole carriers compared to Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. Interestingly, we observe no band shift in Fe$_3$GaTe$_2$ across its T$_C$ of 360 K, compared to a small shift in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ across its T$_C$ of 210 K. The weak temperature-dependent evolution strongly deviates from the expectations of an itinerant Stoner mechanism. Our results suggest that itinerant electrons have minimal contributions to the enhancement of T$_C$ in Fe$_3$GaTe$_2$ compared to Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, and that the nature of ferromagnetism in these Fe-based vdW ferromagnets must be understood with considerations of the electron correlations.

The three-dimensional electronic structure and the nature of Ce 4f electrons of the Kondo insulator CeRu4Sn6 are investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, utilizing tunable photon energies. Our results reveal (i) the three-dimensional k-space nature of the Fermi surface, (ii) the localized-to-itinerant transition of f electrons occurs at a much high temperature than the hybridization gap opening temperature, and (iii) the "relocalization" of itinerant f electrons below 25 K, which could be the precursor to the establishment of magnetic order., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Emergent phases often appear when the electronic kinetic energy is comparable to the Coulomb interactions. One approach to seek material systems as hosts of such emergent phases is to realize localization of electronic wavefunctions due to the geometric frustration inherent in the crystal structure, resulting in flat electronic bands. Recently, such efforts have found a wide range of exotic phases in the two-dimensional kagome lattice, including magnetic order, time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order, nematicity, and superconductivity. However, the interlayer coupling of the kagome layers disrupts the destructive interference needed to completely quench the kinetic energy. Here we demonstrate that an interwoven kagome network-a pyrochlore lattice-can host a three dimensional (3D) localization of electron wavefunctions. Meanwhile, the nonsymmorphic symmetry of the pyrochlore lattice guarantees all band crossings at the Brillouin zone X point to be 3D gapless Dirac points, which was predicted theoretically but never yet observed experimentally. Through a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, fundamental lattice model and density functional theory calculations, we investigate the novel electronic structure of a Laves phase superconductor with a pyrochlore sublattice, CeRu$_2$. We observe flat bands originating from both the Ce 4$f$ orbitals as well as from the 3D destructive interference of the Ru 4$d$ orbitals. We further observe the nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected 3D gapless Dirac cones at the X point. Our work establishes the pyrochlore structure as a promising lattice platform to realize and tune novel emergent phases intertwining topology and many-body interactions., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures

The effect of Lifshitz transition on thermodynamics and superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates has been heavily debated but remains an open question. In particular, an observed peak of electronic specific heat is proposed to originate from fluctuations of a putative quantum critical point p* (e.g. the termination of pseudogap at zero temperature), which is close to, but distinguishable from the Lifshitz transition in La-based cuprates. Here, we report an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of three-dimensional Fermi surfaces in La2-xSrxCuO4 thin films(x = 0.06 - 0.35). With accurate kz dispersion quantification, the Lifshitz transition is determined to happen within a finite range around x = 0.21. Normal state electronic specific heat, calculated from spectroscopy-derived band parameters, agrees with previous thermodynamic microcalorimetry measurements. The account of the specific heat maximum by underlying band structures excludes the need for additionally dominant contribution from the quantum fluctuations at p*. A d-wave superconducting gap smoothly across the Lifshitz transition demonstrates the insensitivity of superconductivity to the dramatic density of states enhancement.

The evolution of the physical properties of two-dimensional material from monolayer limit to the bulk reveals unique consequences from dimension confinement and provides a distinct tuning knob for applications. Monolayer 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (1T'-TMDs) with ubiquitous quantum spin Hall (QSH) states are ideal two-dimensional building blocks of various three-dimensional topological phases. However, the stacking geometry was previously limited to the bulk 1T'-WTe2 type. Here, we introduce the novel 2M-TMDs consisting of translationally stacked 1T'-monolayers as promising material platforms with tunable inverted bandgaps and interlayer coupling. By performing advanced polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as first-principles calculations on the electronic structure of 2M-TMDs, we revealed a topology hierarchy: 2M-WSe2, MoS2, and MoSe2 are weak topological insulators (WTIs), whereas 2M-WS2 is a strong topological insulator (STI). Further demonstration of topological phase transitions by tunning interlayer distance indicates that band inversion amplitude and interlayer coupling jointly determine different topological states in 2M-TMDs. We propose that 2M-TMDs are parent compounds of various exotic phases including topological superconductors and promise great application potentials in quantum electronics due to their flexibility in patterning with two-dimensional materials.

Charge density waves (CDWs) have been tied to a number of unusual phenomena in kagome metals, including rotation symmetry breaking, time-reversal symmetry breaking and superconductivity. The majority of the experiments thus far have focused on the CDW states in AV3Sb5 and FeGe, characterized by the 2a0 by 2a0 period. Recently, a bulk CDW phase (T* ~ 92 K) with a different wave length and orientation has been reported in ScV6Sn6, as the first realization of a CDW state in the broad RM6X6 structure. Here, using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the microscopic structure and the spectroscopic signatures of this charge ordering phase in ScV6Sn6. Differential conductance dI/dV spectra show a partial gap opening in the density-of-states of about 20 meV at the Fermi level. This is much smaller than the spectral gaps observed in AV3Sb5 and FeGe despite the comparable T* temperatures in these systems, suggesting substantially weaker coupling strength in ScV6Sn6. Surprisingly, despite the three-dimensional bulk nature of the charge order, we find that the charge modulation is only observed on the kagome termination. Temperature-dependent band structure evolution suggests a modulation of the surface states as a consequence of the emergent charge order, with an abrupt spectral weight shift below T* consistent with the first-order phase transition. The similarity of the electronic band structures of ScV6Sn6 and TbV6Sn6 (where charge ordering is absent), together with the first-principle calculations, suggests that charge ordering in ScV6Sn6 may not be primarily electronically driven. Interestingly, in contrast to the CDW state of cousin AV3Sb5, we find no evidence supporting rotation symmetry breaking. Our results reveal a distinctive nature of the charge ordering phase in ScV6Sn6 in comparison to other kagome metals.

The interplay between Kondo screening and magnetic interactions is central to comprehending the intricate phases in heavy-fermion compounds. However, the role of the itinerant magnetic order, which is driven by the conducting (c) electrons, has been largely uncharted in the context of heavy-fermion systems due to the scarcity of material candidates. Here we demonstrate the coexistence of the coherent Kondo screening and d-orbital ferromagnetism in material system La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Co$_2$As$_2$, through comprehensive thermodynamic and electrical transport measurements. Additionally, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we further observe the f-orbit-dominated bands near the Fermi level ($E_f$) and signatures of the f-c hybridization below the magnetic transition temperature, providing strong evidence of Kondo lattice state in the presence of ferromagnetic order. Remarkably, by changing the ratio of Ce/La, we observe a substantial enhancement of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the Kondo lattice regime. The value of the Hall conductivity quantitatively matches with the first-principle calculation that optimized with our ARPES results and can be attributed to the large Berry curvature (BC) density engendered by the topological nodal rings composed of the Ce-4f and Co-3d orbitals at $E_f$. Our findings point to the realization of a new platform for exploring correlation-driven topological responses in a novel Kondo lattice environment., Comment: 4 Figs and 22 pages. The paradigm of classifying three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators into strong and weak ones (STI and WTI) opens the door for the discovery of various topological phases of matter protected by different symmetries and defined in different dimensions. However, in contrast to the vast realization of STIs, very few materials have been experimentally identified as being close to WTI. Even amongst those identified, none exists with topological surface states (TSS) exposed in a global bulk band gap that is stable at all temperatures. Here we report the design and observation of an ideal WTI in a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) bismuth halide, Bi$_{4}$I$_{1.2}$Br$_{2.8}$ (BIB). Via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we identify that BIB hosts TSS on the (100)$\prime$ side surface in the form of two anisotropic $\pi$-offset Dirac cones (DCs) separated in momentum while topologically dark on the (001) top surface. The ARPES data fully determine a unique side-surface Hamiltonian and thereby identify two pairs of non-degenerate helical saddle points and a series of four Lifshitz transitions. The fact that both the surface Dirac and saddle points are in the global bulk band gap of 195 meV, combined with the small Dirac velocities, nontrivial spin texture, and the near-gap chemical potential, qualifies BIB to be not only an ideal WTI but also a fertile ground for topological many-body physics.

We apply a topological material design concept for selecting a bulk topology of 3D crystals by different van-der-Waals stacking of 2D topological insulator layers, and find a bismuth halide Bi4Br2I2 to be an ideal weak topological insulator (WTI) with the largest band gap (~230 meV) among all the WTI candidates, by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and resistivity measurements. Rare-earth monopnictide (RE-V) semimetal crystals subjected to hydrostatic pressure have shown interesting trends in magnetoresistance, magnetic ordering, and superconductivity, with theory predicting pressure-induced band inversion. Yet, thus far, there have been no direct experimental reports of interchanged band order in RE-Vs due to strain. This work studies the evolution of band topology in biaxially strained GdSb (001) epitaxial films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT). We find that biaxial strain continuously tunes the electronic structure from topologically trivial to nontrivial, reducing the gap between the hole and the electron bands dispersing along the [001] direction. The conduction and valence band shifts seen in DFT and ARPES measurements are explained by a tight-binding model that accounts for the orbital symmetry of each band. Finally, we discuss the effect of biaxial strain on carrier compensation and magnetic ordering temperature.

Kramers nodal lines (KNLs) have recently been proposed theoretically as a special type of Weyl line degeneracy connecting time-reversal invariant momenta. KNLs are robust to spin orbit coupling and are inherent to all non-centrosymmetric achiral crystal structures, leading to unusual spin, magneto-electric, and optical properties. However, their existence in in real quantum materials has not been experimentally established. Here we gather the experimental evidence pointing at the presence of KNLs in SmAlSi, a non-centrosymmetric metal that develops incommensurate spin density wave order at low temperature. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and magneto-transport methods, we provide evidence suggesting the presence of KNLs, together with observing Weyl fermions under the broken inversion symmetry in the paramagnetic phase of SmAlSi. We discuss the nesting possibilities regarding the emergent magnetic orders in SmAlSi. Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. To gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, here we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L3- edge. As doping increases, the CO wavevector decreases, saturating at a commensurate value of 0.25 r.l.u. beyond a characteristic doping pc, where the correlation length becomes shorter than the apparent periodicity (4a0). Such behavior is indicative of the fluctuating nature of the CO; and the proliferation of CO excitations in the superconducting state also appears strongest at pc, consistent with expected behavior at a CO QCP. Intriguingly, pc appears to be near optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature Tc is maximal., Comment: This is a submitted version of the manuscript.
