16. Young Children's Fairness Judgements on the Distribution of Rewards and Responsibilities: Allocation Patterns and Consistencies across Two Kinds of Distribution

Abstract

The present study examined whether young children demonstrated consistencies in their allocation patterns across distributions of positive and negative resources. Preschool children from younger (age 4-5) and elder (age 5-6) classrooms were asked to allocate rewards when one person contributed more than the other and to allocate the responsibility of cleaning up the toys when only one person enjoyed the benefit of playing. By presenting two conditions for each distribution (the person who contributed more or enjoyed the benefit was the participant in one situation and the peer in the other), four allocation types (equity, equality, selfish, and generous) were identified. Children in both groups showed generous patterns in both distributions, but the differences for age were not significant. Despite more elder children applied the same rules to both distributions compared to the younger children, no age difference was found. These findings indicate key implications and scope for future research.

Abstract

This article discusses a rare case of coexisting lichen planus (LP) and bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) without malignant tumors. LP is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, nails, hair, and mucous membranes, while BO is a progressive airway disorder characterized by narrowing and obliteration of the airway lumen. The patient in this case study experienced symptoms of LP, such as stomatitis and rash, followed by respiratory symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with CB, a subtype of BO. Despite treatment, the patient's respiratory condition worsened, and she died from respiratory failure. The relationship between LP and BO is not well understood, and more research is needed to establish effective therapeutic options for LP patients. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

This article discusses a case study involving a 14-year-old female miniature dachshund with a nodular lesion in the bladder mucosa. Further examination revealed dysplastic changes in the bladder neck and urethra, as well as the presence of a BRAFV595E mutation. The article explores the association between the mutation and dysplastic changes in the mucosa, as well as the presence of follicular cystitis. It also discusses the use of immunohistochemistry for diagnosis and highlights the similarities between canine and human bladder cancer. Further studies are needed to evaluate the involvement of BRAF mutation in malignant transformation and confirm the prognostic significance of BRAF mutations in dogs with flat urothelial lesions. Abstract

Cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor with a poor prognosis, characterized by the high uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). This case report presents two cases of cardiac angiosarcoma with a marked difference in FDG uptake and prognosis.Case Summary:Case 1: A 40-year-old male presented with syncope. Ultrasound echocardiography demonstrated a cardiac tumor with a high uptake of 18F-FDG (maximum standardized uptake value=9.2). The patient underwent heart catheterization and tumor biopsy. The pathological result was high-grade angiosarcoma, and the MIB-1(Ki-67) proliferation index was approximately 20%. Systemic chemotherapy was administered; however, the patient died 2 years and 5 months after disease onset.Case 2: A 65-year-old female had a right atrial tumor incidentally diagnosed during routine ultrasound echocardiography. The tumor exhibited a low uptake of 18F-FDG (maximum standardized uptake value=1.8). Open heart surgery was performed, and the tumor was completely resected. Histological analysis revealed low-grade angiosarcoma, and the MIB-1(Ki-67) proliferation index was less than 5%. The patient was followed-up and had not relapsed 2 years after surgery.Conclusion: 18F-FDG uptake may reflect pathological tumor grade and prognosis in cardiac angiosarcoma.

Abstract

Studies on development and fairness judgments in resource allocations have mainly addressed the distribution of reward. However, the distribution of responsibility also requires exploration in the context of research on development and distributive justice. For an integrated understanding of reward and responsibility distributions, we briefly reviewed the studies on children's fairness judgments in reward and responsibility distributions. We then discussed the theoretical basis and methodological framework to further our understanding. After reviewing a study which considered both reward and responsibility distributions in the same experiment, we also discussed the questions to be solved to understand children's fairness judgments in both types of distributions. Individual developmental process of fairness judgments, (in)consistency of judgments in reward and responsibility distributions, and generous judgments in allocations were discussed by referring to theoretical discussions of culture and reciprocity.
