Jeune syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is characterized by skeletal abnormalities, particularly a narrow, bell-shaped chest, leading to severe respiratory distress in newborns. This case report details a full-term female neonate presenting with significant respiratory challenges, typical skeletal features, and early-onset renal dysfunction. Despite normal initial imaging, persistent renal abnormalities were observed, underscoring the need for early diagnosis, vigilant monitoring, and a multidisciplinary management approach to optimize outcomes for patients with Jeune syndrome.

Small cell carcinomas are very aggressive malignancies that are most often linked with lung cancer, although they may also develop in the pancreas, colon, rectum, skin, and cervix. SCC of the pancreas accounts for about 1% of these neoplasms. An 88-year-old male with several comorbidities who presented with significant weight loss was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma after complaining of persistent epistaxis and back pain. This case underscores the significance of using atypical tumor markers, such as thyroid transcription factor 1, to diagnose small-cell pancreatic cancer. It also emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to managing these aggressive tumors.

Abstract Background and Aim The role of Resmetirom in non‐alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) represents a promising therapeutic approach in addressing the growing global burden of liver disease. With NASH emerging as a leading cause of liver‐related morbidity and mortality worldwide, there is an urgent need for effective treatments. Resmetirom, a selective thyroid hormone receptor‐β agonist, offers potential benefits in improving liver histology and metabolic parameters in patients with NASH. This review examines the current evidence surrounding Resmetirom's role in NASH management. Methods A systematic review and meta‐analysis was done by searching in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, MEDLINE (including MEDLINE InProcess) (OvidSP), Web of Science, Embase (OvidSP), and Scopus databases. ROB2 Cochrane tool was used for assessing risk of bias in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In the analysis, we used RevMan Cochrane software. Results The study showed that patients who were treated with Resmetirom had significantly lower low‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (LDL‐C) levels (mean difference [MD] −10.45; 95% confidence interval [CI] −15.86 to −5.83; P

Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a persistent metabolic illness causing elevated glucose levels due to insulin resistance. Social media has been found to positively impact diabetes management by boosting motivation, adherence, emotional support, and sharing evidence-based information, thereby enhancing patients’ glycemic control efforts and achieving HbA1c targets. Primarily to examine the influence of social media within a random sample Iraqi population of T2DM patients on the control of diabetes, as measured by HbA1c levels. Methods: A multicentric cross-sectional study involves patients diagnosed with T2DM recruited between December 30, 2019 and November 8, 2023. Patients diagnosed with T2DM, who visited the outpatient clinic at least twice during the study period, were included. The sample size comprised 2921 patients. Various social media platforms available including, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Viber, were reported. Results: The study involves 2921 participants with a mean age of 53.3 years, 56% of them successfully reached their HbA1c target within a mean of 18.17 months. A significant correlation was found between achieving the target and using social media ( P = .0001), with a shorter average duration among social media users compared to non-users. A family history of diabetes also significantly correlated with achieving the desired outcome, suggesting a probable positive correlation ( P = .019). Conclusion: The study reveals a significant association between social media usage and glycemic control, introducing the importance of technology-based interventions in enhancing diabetes self-management, highlighting the relationships between social media engagement and HbA1c target achievement.

Cabazitaxel, a second-generation taxane chemotherapy agent, has demonstrated efficacy in treating metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in patients who have previously received docetaxel-based therapy. By targeting microtubule dynamics, cabazitaxel inhibits cancer cell division and induces apoptosis, thereby extending survival and delaying disease progression in this challenging patient population. A systematic review and meta-analysis were done by searching the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, MEDLINE (including MEDLINE InProcess; OvidSP), Web of Science, Embase (OvidSP), and Scopus databases. ROB2 Cochrane tools assessment for RCTs. In the analysis, we used RevMan Cochrane software. Our research reveals significantly improved outcomes in terms of patient survival rates, both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), for cabazitaxel over comparative treatment (PFS HR 0.77 [0.61, 0.97]) (OS HR 0.79 [0.70, 0.88]). The treatment response rates were also favorable for cabazitaxel, reported as PSA Reduction Response of more than 50% (PRR) (odds ratio (OR) = 1.59 [0.56, 4.52]) and tumor response rate (TRR) (OR = 2.34 [1.28, 4.28]). Cabazitaxel was associated with significantly more incidence of adverse events. The risk ratio (RR) for serious adverse events was 1.64 [1.14, 2.35] for cabazitaxel compared to the current regimen. Objectives An abscess is a localized collection of pus contained within a fibrous capsule. In this study, we aimed to determine the demographic pattern, common anatomical sites, risk factors, and the microbial profile of abscesses in different body sites among children. Methods We conducted a prospective study in our pediatric surgical department among children with abscesses in different body sites between January 2019 and December 2022. Results During the study period, 85 children were included. The participant age range was 0 to 14 years old, and 66% of participants were boys. The most common anatomical sites where abscesses formed were the pelvis (n = 29, 34%), abdomen (n = 22, 26%), neck (n = 14, 16%), and extremities (n = 12, 14%). Risk factors of abscesses in different body sites included cannulation, lymphadenitis, mastitis, perforated appendix, and perianal fistula. We observed that 74% of abscesses were of a polymicrobial nature. Conclusion The most common anatomical sites for abscesses in children included the pelvis, abdomen, neck, and extremities. Most abscesses in these sites were polymicrobial in nature.

Abstract Introduction Donohue syndrome (DS), also referred to as leprechaunism, is a remarkably uncommon autosomal recessive disorder that primarily affects the endocrine system. Its incidence rate is exceedingly low, with only 1 case reported per 4 million live births. The syndrome is distinguished by a series of characteristic clinical features. Case presentation We present a case of a twenty-month-old male with DS who experienced a range of dysmorphic and clinical features with the involvement of multiple systems. These features include skin hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, distinct facial features, abdominal distension, and microcephaly, with the involvement of the endocrine, renal, respiratory, and cardiac systems. Conclusion The primary features of DS involve severe insulin resistance and growth abnormalities, the association with pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) has not been reported before. This finding adds more complexity to the condition. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first report for a patient with DS who has PHTN. Further investigation is required since the mechanisms behind the development of PHTN in DS are not entirely understood. Shedding light on this association will contribute to better management strategies and outcomes for affected patients.

Key Clinical Message Early recognition and management of seronegative celiac disease, even in the absence of typical serological markers, can prevent complications and ensure better health outcomes in pediatric patients. Consideration of a gluten‐free diet in similar cases can lead to significant clinical improvement. Abstract Celiac disease, characterized by its diverse clinical manifestations, often necessitates adherence to a gluten‐free diet, particularly in pediatric patients for optimal growth and development. This report presents the case of an 11‐year‐old male who exhibited recurrent symptoms of fever and diarrhea progressing to edema and pallor, with a history dating back to age 3. Laboratory findings revealed pancytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, and proteinuria. Despite negative serological markers, noninvasive tests, along with clinical improvement on a gluten‐free diet and supportive measures within a month, suggested celiac disease complicated by transient protein‐losing enteropathy and vitamin B12 deficiency. It is important to note that other malabsorption disorders can also show clinical improvement following a gluten‐free diet. Additionally, the antibiotic treatment received by the patient could have addressed other possible causes of malabsorption, complicating the differential diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and management of celiac disease, especially in pediatric patients, to prevent complications and promote optimal health outcomes.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a chronic, recurrent thrombotic vasculopathy characterized by painful ulcerations on the lower extremities, which heal slowly and leave atrophic white scars known as “atrophie blanche.” This report presents the case of a 31-year-old woman with a 4-year history of recurrent painful ulcerations on her legs and feet. A skin biopsy revealed findings consistent with LV, and an exhaustive laboratory workup ruled out secondary causes such as thrombophilia, malignancies, autoimmune diseases, and peripheral arterial disease. The patient showed remarkable improvement with a treatment regimen of pentoxifylline, nifedipine, and warfarin, resulting in complete ulcer resolution and sustained remission over 5 months. Our case highlights the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic approach and a multidisciplinary treatment strategy in managing primary LV to achieve remission and prevent recurrence of skin ulcerations.

This study examines the contraindications of gabapentin and Nucleo C.M.P Forte in metformin-controlled diabetic patients, focusing on their potential to induce hyperglycemia. A case report of a 65-year-old woman with type II diabetes is presented, demonstrating elevated blood glucose levels following the initiation of gabapentin and Nucleo C.M.P Forte. The literature review highlights limited data on gabapentin-induced hyperglycemia, with additional consideration of the potential effects of Nucleo C.M.P Forte. The study suggests modifying insulin therapy in diabetic patients taking gabapentin and calls for further research on this interaction.

Here, we report a rare case of a 22-year-old female presenting with recurrent chest pain mimicking inferior ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) but ultimately attributed to an aortic aneurysm. Despite facing initial challenges in diagnosis, such as normal troponin levels and temporary electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, advanced imaging showed a large mass in the chest pressing on the right coronary artery. Prompt multidisciplinary intervention, including surgical resection of the aneurysm, led to successful management and improved outcomes. This case highlights the importance of considering unusual etiologies in atypical presentations of myocardial infarction, necessitating comprehensive evaluation and collaboration among various specialties for optimal patient care.

Key Clinical Message Timely recognition of atypical Takayasu arteritis is crucial. Unusual presentations, such as pericardial effusion, can complicate diagnosis. CT angiogram aids in precise diagnosis, guiding targeted immunosuppressive therapy. Multidisciplinary collaboration is vital for comprehensive management, improving patient outcomes in this challenging condition. Abstract This case study highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by atypical presentations of Takayasu arteritis (TA), focusing on a 42‐year‐old male presenting with pericardial effusion. Despite inconclusive initial investigations, a CT angiogram revealed large vessel vasculitis, confirming TA. Management with immunosuppressive therapy led to clinical improvement. This case emphasize the importance of recognizing unusual manifestations of TA for timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, emphasizing the role of multidisciplinary collaboration in optimizing patient outcomes.

Introduction: Multiple Primary Malignant Tumors (MPMT) are two or more distinct primary cancers in a single patient, either occurring simultaneously (synchronous) or at different times (metachronous). MPMTs are very rare, with an incidence of 0.73% to 11.7% among cancer patients. Breast and lung cancers are the most common malignancies in women, but their coexistence as MPMT is uncommon. Case presentation: We report the case of a 51-year-old non-smoking woman who had a productive cough with bloody sputum for a week, after a two-month history of dry cough. She was diagnosed with a high-grade, poorly differentiated non-keratinizing squamous-cell carcinoma in the right lung. A PET scan also revealed a poorly defined soft tissue mass in the central sector of the right breast, which was confirmed to be a primary invasive ductal carcinoma. Discussion: The etiology and pathogenesis of MPMT are unclear, but several factors such as genetic predisposition, environmental exposure, immunodeficiency, and treatment-related effects have been proposed. The diagnosis and management of MPMT are challenging, as they require careful evaluation of each tumor and individualized treatment plans. The prognosis of MPMT depends on the stage and histology of each tumor, as well as the patient’s performance status and comorbidities. Conclusion: This case report highlights the rare occurrence of synchronous primary malignancies in the lung and breast, underreported in the medical literature. This case adds to the existing knowledge of MPMT and may stimulate further research on this topic. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of MPMT in cancer patients and perform thorough investigations to rule out secondary or metastatic tumors.

This case report outlines the management of a 43-year-old male with no past medical history presenting with inferior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and a positive “Dead Man Sign.” Prompt administration of antiplatelet therapy and emergent percutaneous coronary intervention led to successful revascularization of the occluded right coronary artery and left anterior descending artery. The patient remained asymptomatic throughout hospitalization and was discharged home with instructions for monthly follow-up for 1 year. Subsequent assessments demonstrated normal echocardiography and Electrocardiography (ECG) findings, indicating favorable cardiac recovery. This case emphasizes the critical importance of rapid recognition and intervention in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction cases, as well as the significance of the Dead Man Sign as a predictor of the occluded culprit coronary vessels, demonstrating favorable outcomes achievable with timely revascularization strategies.

Key clinical message Early identification of rib fractures, even in young patients without chronic diseases, is essential. Prompt diagnosis facilitates appropriate management, aiding in pain control and addressing underlying causes such as persistent coughing. Additionally, vigilance for complications such as pneumothorax and rib displacement is crucial for optimizing patient care.

Key Clinical Message Ibuprofen single dose may rarely induce Stevens–Johnson Syndrome, emphasizing the vital need for heightened vigilance in healthcare and public awareness for safer medication practices. Abstract Stevens–Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a severe and potentially life‐threatening skin disorder associated with certain medications, including ibuprofen. We present a case of a 45‐year‐old woman who developed SJS following a single dose of ibuprofen. Despite its rarity, this case underscores the importance of heightened vigilance in healthcare and public awareness regarding the potential risks of commonly used medications. Prompt recognition of SJS symptoms and immediate medical intervention are crucial for patient outcomes. Healthcare providers should exercise caution when prescribing ibuprofen, particularly in patients with a history of adverse drug reactions. This case emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring, patient education, and informed decision‐making to promote medication safety and optimal patient care.

Key Clinical Message This case underscores the atypical presentation of late‐onset congenital diaphragmatic hernia in a 9‐old with 1p36 deletion syndrome. Recognition of respiratory distress and abdominal symptoms is crucial for intervention. Abstract Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a condition characterized by the protrusion of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity due to a defect in the diaphragm. While typically observed in the neonatal period, CDH can present in later life. This case report describes the presentation, diagnosis, and management of a nine‐year‐old boy with 1p36 deletion syndrome who presented with respiratory distress, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anorexia. The initial diagnosis was tension pneumothorax, and thus the patient underwent chest tube placement. However, a high‐resolution CT scan revealed a left hemidiaphragmatic hernia, and the patient eventually underwent an emergency laparotomy due to acute‐onset respiratory distress. Intraoperatively, a diagnosis of Bochdalek hernia with gastric perforation was made, and the CDH and gastric perforations were resolved successfully. This case highlights the importance of considering late‐presenting CDH as a possible diagnosis in pediatric patients with similar symptoms and the radiological findings suggestive of tension pneumothorax. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention can lead to successful management of such cases.

Key Clinical Message De Winter syndrome, though rare, demands heightened clinical suspicion. Recognizing its electrocardiographic subtleties is crucial, as prompt diagnosis allows for life‐saving interventions such as percutaneous coronary intervention or thrombolysis.

Background: Dandy-Walker malformation or syndrome is the most common posterior fossa malformation. It is commonly associated with other congenital anomalies such as cardiac defects; however, association with a giant occipital meningocele is extremely rare, as only around 34 cases have been described. Case description: We report a case of a 2-month-old female infant who presented with a midline, gigantic mass in the back of the head. It was first discovered on a prenatal ultrasound. The mass measured about 15 × 5 cm, extending to the midback, not changing in size with crying, not attached to the back, and with a positive transillumination test. The diagnosis was confirmed after doing a brain computed tomography, which revealed hypoplasia of the vermis with an enlarged posterior fossa as well as cystic dilation of both ventricles with herniation through a bone defect. Conclusion: Our case highlights a rare association between giant occipital meningocele and Dandy-Walker syndrome that is rarely discussed or reported in the medical literature. By reporting this extremely rare case of Dandy-Walker syndrome associated with a giant occipital meningocele, we hope to contribute to the creation of a database for future research so that a management protocol can be established for use by clinicians and neurosurgeons for better management of the condition.

This case report raises awareness among healthcare providers about such risks and emphasizes the need for taking necessary precautions to avoid them while treating such diseases. Abstract We present an Azathioprine‐induced lymphoma case in a 51‐year‐old male patient with Takayasu arteritis who presented with painless cervical swelling, itching, weight loss, and decreased appetite. This case report aims to increase awareness of the potential long‐term cancer risks associated with azathioprine use in the treatment of chronic diseases.

Eagle Syndrome is a pain syndrome of rare and unwonted incidence. Forbearer has an elongated styloid process or a calcified stylohyoid ligament, suppressing glossopharyngeal nerve leading to a mélange of symptoms including sporadic cervicofacial pain, headache, and foreign body sensation. Here we present case of a 65 year old military man of south Asian origin, who presented with complaints of sudden episodes of blackouts for past five years and pain in neck while turning head to left for past two months.Patient's ultrasound Doppler showed marked narrowing of proximal left internal carotid artery with approximate diametric stenosis of 70% according to The North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET).Further studies of MRI Brain was done,revealing small Foci of restricted diffusion along Territory of Left MCA along with age related Microangiopathic cerebral changes. CT Scan of neck was also done which showed Abnormal elongation of bilateral styloid process more on the left side.The case was discussed in a Multidisciplinary Team Meeting comprising ENT surgeon, vascular surgeon and surgical excision was planned through trans cervical approach. Surgery was successful as seen by post op and follow up scans.

Key Clinical Message This is an extremely rare case that has not been presented or discussed in the literature to the best of our knowledge. The overlap of connective tissue disease is a challenge for physicians and patients, and it needs special care and regular clinical and laboratory follow‐up. Abstract This report describes a rare case of overlapping connective tissue diseases in a 42‐year‐old female with rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome, and dermatomyositis. The patient presented with a hyperpigmented erythematous rash, muscle weakness, and pain, highlighting the challenges of diagnosis and treatment that require regular clinical and laboratory follow‐up.

Abstract By reporting this case, we hope to encourage medical professionals to concentrate on diagnosing old patients with unusual presentation of rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: An encephalocele is a congenital neural tube defect that is estimated to have an incidence of 1–2 cases per 10,000 live births. There have been a few cases of double encephaloceles reported in the medical literature. We report an extremely rare case of double encephalocele with an atrial septal defect in Iraq. Case presentation: A 2-month-old female infant presented with two swellings at the back of her head since birth. Her mother received poor prenatal care. The examination revealed a microcephaly head and two sacs in the occipital region, which were not connected and were covered completely by skin. The surgery includes a transverse incision, excision of both sacs with necrotic tissue, a duroplasty, and a water-tight dural closure. The operation proceeded without any neurological sequelae or cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Conclusion: Double encephalocele is a congenital neural tube defect that is rarely discussed or reported in the medical literature. The management of this condition might be difficult because it requires a special approach for each patient. This case report from Iraq is used to raise awareness about this particular disorder and to motivate clinicians about the importance of early and appropriate management for such cases.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in late 2019, with the first case identified in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, on 12 December 2019. In order to perceive the comprehensive impact of this pandemic, we have to know that misinformation and denials about COVID-19 have surely exacerbated its diffusion and hindered the response against it. Turkmenistan remains one of the very few countries in the world that lacks reports about emerging cases of the novel coronavirus. Turkmen authorities claim that they have adopted all attainable measures required in order to combat the virus, asserting that COVID-19 has yet to reach their country. Despite the government’s reported absence of COVID-19 in the country, rumors, media reports and independent sources suggest the spread of the pandemic in Turkmenistan. By mid-June 2020, the outbreak was referred to as being serious with patients suffering extreme health risks, and following its state of disrepair and unethical practices, many of those anticipated to be COVID-19 infected tend to suffer at home, discouraging any interaction with the healthcare system. The civil society in Turkmenistan, for the time being, takes full part of the government’s duty in the process of informing and educating the public regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, and endeavors to keep the government and WHO accountable for behaving in such repressive ways that could lead to rather preventable loss of human life in Turkmenistan. Yet, efforts hang fire before unveiling the real situation, and Turkmenistan’s government owning up to the negations and roaming speculations, not only regarding the coronavirus crisis, but every public-related issue itself.

Abstract Background Various factors contribute to the pathogenesis of a disease. These include genetic factors, family history, and some idiopathic causes. Genetic makeup has an important role in the progression of disease. This is due to mutations in genetic material, that is, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Methodology This is a cross‐sectional study that involved 5000 participants distributed across 250 countries. All the participants were randomly selected and asked to fill out the online survey. All the participants were fully informed about the study's purpose before providing their consent. Results The participants were distributed among 250 countries. Their age mean (standard deviation) is 46.7 (12.4). We discovered a significant difference between those who have genetic or congenital diseases and those who have a family history of the disease. Also, there is a statistically significant difference between the recurrence of the disease and the duration of the visits of close relatives who have the same disease. Conclusion The study suggests that there might be some ways, through gene waves or the environment, in which a gene changes the expression of other genes of similar sequence in different individuals when the required period of contact is provided. In the future, this theory might explain the idiopathic nature of some diseases.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide and the leading cause of death among Iraqi women. Breast cancer cases in Iraq were found to have increased from 26.6/100,000 in 2000 to 31.5/100,000 in 2009. The present study aims to assess the established risk factors of breast cancer among Iraqi women and to highlight strategies that can aid in reducing the incidence. Methods 1093 Iraqi females were enrolled in this cross-sectional study by purposive sampling methods. Data collection occurred from July 2019 to September 2019. 1500 women participated in the study, and 407 women were ultimately excluded. The questionnaire was conducted as a self-administrated form in an online survey. Ethical approval was obtained from the College of Medicine in the University of Baghdad. The Gail Model risk was calculated for each woman by the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool (BCRAT), an interactive model developed by Mitchell Gail that was designed to estimate a woman’s absolute risk of developing breast cancer in the upcoming five years of her life and in her lifetime. Results The ages of the participants ranged from 35 to 84 years old. The mean 5–year risk of breast cancer was found to be 1.3, with 75.3% of women at low risk and 24.7% of women at high risk. The mean lifetime risk of breast cancer was found to be 13.4, with 64.7% of women at low risk, 30.3% at moderate risk, and 5.0% at high risk. The results show that geographically Baghdad presented the highest 5-year risk, followed by Dhi Qar, Maysan, and Nineveh. However, the highest lifetime risk was found in Najaf, followed by Dhi Qar, Baghdad, and Nineveh, successively. Conclusion Breast cancer is a wide-spreading problem in the world and particularly in Iraq, with Gail Model estimations of high risk in several governorates. Prevention programs need to be implemented and awareness campaigns organized in order to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment.

Abstract Uterine rupture mostly occurs in the third trimester. However, it may occur at an earlier time with the same catastrophic consequences. The authors present a case report of uterine rupture occurring in the second trimester at 18 weeks gestation.

Abstract This case report presents the first H‐syndrome rarity in Iraq, a 12‐year‐old female patient who was attending the Rheumatology out clinic for progressive hands joint deformities. She has a history of a multi‐systemic collection of diseases with various clinical features that include beta thalassemia minor, sensorineural deafness, and celiac disease.

Background: COVID-19 has become a big challenge for the humanity and the public health; it is progressing in all the world and the number of cases exceeded the millions with a high rate of mortality. The disease is presented with a variety of symptoms and in different extents but predominantly with respiratory symptoms such as fever and shortness of breath. Methodology: It is a preliminary, descriptive cross-sectional study that includes 503 patients from four counties and more than ten isolation centres. It includes all the patients who were presented with frequency of urination in addition to the other disease's symptoms. The frequency of urination was identified by micturition frequency for more than 10 times a day with exclusion of the hormonal diseases related to the micturition. COVID-19 is a threat to health systems around the world and Rwanda is not an exception. The impact of the pandemic is far-reaching and access to health commodities is not spared. Proper drug supply is critical for a robust healthcare system. It determines the extent at which the population are likely to have access to essential medicines and treatments. In Rwanda, the pharmaceutical sector heavily relies on imports. With the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, the drug supply system was interrupted leaving many stores from small local pharmacies to the big medical stores running out of stock. The reasons were limited importation of goods from abroad, and the panic buying practice among the customers and some institutions when responding to the pandemic. Drug and medicines accessibility, availability and affordability should be the core of any drug management policy. It is with no doubt that, Rwanda has made a tremendous work to mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on the country’s drug supply; however, efforts are still needed to invest in local pharmaceutical production as a way to minimize import expenses in the country. Good policy on drug importation, production and distribution should be enforced to avoid any drug shortage that may be encountered in the Rwandan drug market.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in massive disruptions in global supply chains. Nigeria is particularly vulnerable with respect to pharmaceuticals since there is reduced local production and about 70% of the drug supply is imported creating a huge supply–demand disparity particularly in times like COVID-19. Nigeria is in need of huge quantities of quality-assured health commodities to effectively respond to the pandemic. Significant shortages of other essential medicines and medical products across the country could be imminent. Drug scarcity in Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic period is because of several accumulated factors, majorly as a result of global lockdown, decreased manufacturing, unaddressed regulatory affairs, poor access to resources by the population, lack of buffer stocks, security instability, and poor funding of the healthcare system. This situation if left unattended, could cause serious drawbacks to the health of the populace as well as the quality of life of Nigerians amid the COVID-19 Pandemic. Appropriate measures should be directed to ensure ethical processes on drug production, importation, pricing, and distribution to avoid such events during unavoidable scenarios, like the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health emergencies.

Yemen has been termed as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis by the United Nations. About 20.1 million (more than 50% of population) Yemenis are facing hunger and 10 million are severely food insecure according to reports by the World Food Programme. With the spread of COVID-19, the situation in Yemen has worsened and humanitarian aid from other countries has become the basis of life for hundreds of thousands of Yemenis after the threat of famine. Yemen is practically one of the poorest countries in the world. It has structural vulnerabilities that have developed over a protracted period of conflict and poor governance and more than 50% live in starving, they suffer for getting one meal a day. To prevent a total collapse of Yemen’s food crises, the government and the international community should act now more decisively.
