Background: The endocrine system of vitamin D regulates about 3 % of the human genome. Vitamin D exerts its actions via a nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) which in turn regulates insulin secretion from the pancreas. VDR gene polymorphisms could have an impact on how autoimmune illnesses like Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) develop. We aimed to explore the relation between T1DM and VDR gene polymorphisms in Egyptian diabetic children and their siblings. Methods: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to quantify 25(OH) vitamin D in the study, which had 179 participants (group 1 = 85 diabetic children, group 2 = 57 siblings of the patients, group 3 = 37 healthy controls). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to analyze the genotyping of the VDR gene polymorphisms Apa-I (rs7975232), Fok-I (rs2228570), Taq-I (rs731236) and Bsm-I (rs1544410). Results: The mean serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels was significantly lower in T1DM patients (14.99 ± 9.24 ng/mL) and siblings (16.31 ± 7.96 ng/mL) compared to the controls (19.48 ± 7.42 ng/mL) (p = 0.031). The genotypes distribution of VDR Fok-I (rs2228570) and Bsm-I (rs1544410) polymorphisms showed a significant difference between patients, siblings and controls as P = 0.001 and 0.026 respectively, while the VDR ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms did not. Abstract Background Access to various affordable and nutritious foods is considered a challenging factor for households with limited resources affecting the proper weaning practices. In order to motivate communities to adhere to the right and proper weaning practices, the social aspect should be considered through close communication with the targeted communities. This study aimed to evaluate how impactful the use of the principles of Communication for Development (C4D) that respect parents’ beliefs and their cultural norms is in improving the weaning practices and growth of infants in an Egyptian village. Methods An interventional three-phase study was conducted for three years. The intervention targeted 464 mothers of infants up to 2 years of age. C4D interventions encouraged each mother to provide her baby with nutritious and varied options through age-appropriate introduction and diversification of nutrient-rich complementary foods under the slogan “ enjoy meals like a baby”. The effectiveness of the approach was measured by five essential weaning practices: Introduction of solid, semi-solid, or soft foods, Minimum dietary diversity, minimum meal frequency, Minimum acceptable diet, and consumption of iron-rich foods. Results There was marked and significant improvement in the awareness and of the majority of the weaning practices’ indicators as a result of the interventions. This was noticed for the timely introduction of complementary foods which increased from 36.7% to 82.0%, the minimum meal frequency indicator (3–5) which increased from 25.3% to 67.3%, iron-rich or fortified food (68.0% to 82%) as well as a regular checkup for baby health at the health unit (71.3%). Indicators that were improved but failed to achieve the target were the “Minimum Dietary Diversity” (reached 32%) and the minimum acceptable diet (reached 22.0%). A significant effect on linear growth especially for females is evidenced by the remarkable decrease in wasting (from 31.5% to 11.1%) and obesity (from 12.0% to 0%) associated with a considerable decrease in underweight (from 40% to 16.7%). Conclusion Targeting caregivers through the C4D approach have succeeded in providing them with the support required for the provision of adequate nutrition for their infants that had significantly marked improvement in growth indices of their infants.

Abstract Objective This study aimed at providing a national prevalence of single and multiple developmental delays (DDs) among 41,640 Egyptian children aged 1 to 12 years and exploring DDs’ associated risk and protective factors. Methods A national household survey from eight governorates of Egypt representing the four major subdivisions of Egypt was conducted through systematic probability proportionate to size. All enrolled children were assessed according to Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, (VABS) as a reliable screening questionnaire for identifying categories of DDs that were verified by pediatrics’ specialists. Results The overall prevalence of children with DDs was 6.7%. The prevalence of a single DD was 3.9% versus 2.8% multiple DDs. Communication deficit was the most prevalent type (5.3%). Lower prevalence was identified for fine motor delay (1.0%), gross motor delay, and socialization deficit (1.5% each). Whereas deficits in daily life skills (self-help and adaptive behavior delay) amounted to 2.3%. Living without mothers and/or fathers in homes was associated with increased odds of having DDs by one and a half times (OR = 1.72 and OR = 1.34 respectively). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed the most predictors for DDs including children who suffer from convulsions after birth (OR = 3.10), low birth weight babies (OR = 1.94), male sex (OR = 1.75), mothers having health problems during pregnancy (OR = 1.70) and belonging to middle socioeconomic status (OR = 1.41). Children who suffered from cyanosis after birth was found to be at risk for any or multiple DDs. Difficult labor was significantly associated with increased odds for multiple DDs (OR = 1.55). Higher paternal and maternal education was associated with decreased odds to have any DDs by 40% (OR = 0.60 and OR = 0.58 respectively). Conclusions The detected prevalence of DDs is within the estimated range of prevalence of DDs for the pediatric population. The majority of the detected risk factors are preventable. Developmental screening is recommended to be implemented in all primary care settings as a routine practice.

OBJECTIVE: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. The study’s overarching goal is to evaluate the impact of HIIT on arterial stiffness in obese hypertensive women. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty obese hypertensive women aged between 40-50 years were randomized to group A (Intervention group, n = 30) or group B (Control group, n = 30). Intervention group received HIIT (4 minutes of cycling at 85-90% of peak HR interspersed with 3-minute active recovery time at 60 - 70% of peak HR, three times per week). Arteriovenous stiffness indicators, the augmentation index corrected for heart rate 75 (AIx@75HR), and oscillometric pulse wave velocity (o-PWV), as well as cardio-metabolic parameters, were assessed before and after 12 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: Finding between-group analysis showed a significant difference in AIx@75HR (95% CI: -8.45 to 0.30), o-PWV ( 95% CI: -1.14 to 0.15), total cholesterol, (95% CI: -31.25 to -1.12), HDL-cholesterol (95% CI: 8.92 to 0.94), LDL-cholesterol (95% CI: -25.35 to -0.06), and triglycerides (95% CI: -53.58 to -2.51). CONCLUSIONS: High-intensity interval training for 12 weeks has a favorable effect on arterial stiffness in obese hypertensive women and lowers associated cardio-metabolic risk factors. However, conventional root canal disinfectants are highly damaging to the tooth and periodontal tissue and ineffective in treating persistent root canal infections. Antimicrobial materials that are biocompatible with apical tissues and can eliminate PEIs-associated bacteria are urgently needed.Methods: Here, ϵ-poly (L-lysine) derived carbon quantum dots (PL-CQDs) are fabricated using pyrolysis to remove PEIs-associated bacterial biofilms.Results: Due to their ultra-small size, high positive charge, and active reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capacity, PL-CQDs exhibit highly effective antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), which is greatly dependent on PL-CQDs concentrations. 100 μg/mL PL-CQDs could kill E. faecalis in 5 min. Importantly, PL-CQDs effectively achieved a reduction of biofilms in the isolated teeth model, disrupting the dense structure of biofilms. PL-CQDs have acceptable cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility in vitro and good biosafety in vivo.Discussion: Thus, PL-CQDs provide a new strategy for treating E. faecalis-associated PEIs. Despite the necessity for smartphones to be designed to better accommodate the elderly user, currently available smartphone user interfaces (UIs) do not appear to be optimized for that purpose. The objectives of this paper are to identify the potential usability problems among elderly adults when interacting with a smartphone's UI, and recommend improvements to UI designs. The heuristic evaluation technique was used to determine the anticipated usability problems. SMASH, a set of 12 usability heuristics for smartphone and mobile applications was applied within a controlled environment, with five experts with the necessary competence to perform the evaluation. The results of the study indicated that there were 27 usability problems and 27 heuristic violations encountered. “Minimize the user's memory load”and “match between system and real world”were the two most frequently violated heuristics. This study was complemented by testing with elderly people, and the results show that 79.17% of the problems experienced by the elderly were predicted by the experts. Usability problems were classified into four categories: 1) appearance; 2) language; 3) dialogue; and 4) information. Problems categories were further divided into sub-categories, and design solutions were suggested for each sub-category. This study's findings contribute to understanding the problems that hinder elderly users in using smartphones and provide valuable feedback to designers of smartphone technology regarding improvements to the UI to better suit the elderly.

Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs), non-randomized studies of intervention (NRSIs), cohort and cross-sectional studies. The systematic review was registered in advance on PROSPERO, and was conducted following the Cochrane Handbook of Systematic Reviews of Interventions and PRISMA checklist., Data Sources: An electronic search in three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Embase) was conducted by two authors to evaluate studies published from 1990 until May 2023., Study Selection: The review question was defined in PICOS format as follows: Population (P), subjects with permanent dentition who having/had orthodontic therapy; Exposure (E), orthodontic therapy with fixed orthodontic appliance; Comparison/Control (C), no orthodontic treatment or intervention; Outcome (O), assessing incidence and/or prevalence of initial caries lesions (ICLs) at subject and teeth levels was the primary outcome, whereas evaluating the influence of demographics and treatment-related variables were secondary outcomes; studies (S), randomized clinical trials, non-randomized clinical studies, cohort and cross-sectional studies., Data Analysis: Meta-analysis was conducted of three or more included studies had comparable findings. The following factors were calculated for each study; sample size, number of patients with ICLs, number of teeth with ICLs, number of teeth affected per patient, and number of surfaces affected. Statistical heterogeneity of effects among studies was assessed by means of the Cochran's test was used to evaluate the statistical heterogeneity of effects in the included studies. Funnel plot approach was used to assess publication bias, whereas Begg's and Egger's correlation test were used to identify asymmetry. Meta-analysis was conducted using a random effects model owing to high methodological and clinical heterogeneity. A descriptive analysis was presented when the meta-analyses appeared inappropriate. Statistical significance level was set at p < 0.05 for all statistical analyses., Results: 21 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis (systematic review); 11 RCTs; 7 NRSIs, and 3 observation studies. Of the included studies, 19 studies were analyzed in the quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). In regard to the prevalence rate of ICLs; 57% of patients had ICLs, with a mean of 2.24 lesions per patient and 22% of surfaces were affected. In regard to the incidence rate; 48% of patients developed new ICLs, with a mean of 2.29 new lesions per patient, and 15% of surfaces became affected. Both prevalence and incidence rates were positively associated with the duration of the orthodontic therapy (P = 0.01 and P < 0.01, respectively), illustrating an elevation in the ICLs numbers as the treatment duration (number of months) increases. There was no association between patients' age and ICLs numbers., Conclusions: Orthodontic therapy using fixed appliances can increase the risk of accumulating plaque and developing caries lesion. However, other risk factors may play a role in developing ICLs; thus, controlling for these factors is paramount to better evaluate the true influence of orthodontic therapy on the ICLs development. In addition, ClinicalTrials.gov and PROSPERO were searched for detecting any relevant unpublished data and ongoing studies., Study Selection: The review was defined in PECOS format as follows: population (P), healthy adolescents (ASA Class I or II; age 10-19); Exposure (E), malocclusion and/or need of orthodontic therapy as determined by professionals utilizing validated standardized tools such as Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need, Peer Assessment Rating, Dental Aesthetic Index, or any well-described tool; comparison (C), no malocclusion and/or need of orthodontic therapy as determined by professionals utilizing validated standardized tools; outcome (O), self-reported oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) using validated tools; study design (S), randomized clinical trials, non-randomized/observational studies (prospective and cross-sectional studies with untreated/no-malocclusion controls), and previous systematic reviews if matching PECOS strategy. Recently, antimicrobial resistance has increased globally particularly Candida infections. Most of antifungal drugs used for treating candidiasis became resistant to most of Candida species. In the current study, a nanocomposite based on mycosynthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs), nanostarch, nanochitosan was prepared. Results illustrated that twenty-four Candida isolates were isolated from clinical samples. Furthermore, three Candida strains were selected as the most resistant among others toward commercial antifungal drugs; these selected strains were identified genetically as C. glabrata MTMA 19, C. glabrata MTMA 21 and C. tropicalis MTMA 24. Characterization of the prepared nanocomposite was carried out using physiochemical analysis included Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (Uv-Vis), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the nanocomposite exhibited promising anticandidal activity against C. glabrata MTMA 19, C. glabrata MTMA 21 and C. tropicalis MTMA 24, where the inhibition zones were 15.3, 27 and 28 mm, respectively. Ultrastructure changes observed in nanocomposite-treated C. tropicalis demonstrated disruption of the cell wall which led to cell death. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials, and prospective or retrospective cohort. The protocol of the study was registered in advance on PROSPERO., Data Sources: An electronic search in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library was conducted by two independent authors up to September 2022. Additionally, OpenGrey and www.greylit.org were searched for gray literature, whereas ClinicalTrials.gov was searched for detecting any relevant unpublished data., Study Selection: The review question was defined in PICOS format as follows: population (P), patients undergoing orthodontic therapy; intervention (I), orthodontic therapy with clear aligner (CA); comparison (C), orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances (FA); outcome (O), periodontal health status and development of gingival recession; studies (S), randomized clinical trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials, and retrospective or prospective cohort studies. Cross-sectional studies, case series, case reports, studies without a control group, and studies with less than 2 months follow-up were excluded., Data Analysis: Periodontal health status was assessed as a primary outcome and it was measured in terms of pocket probing depth (PPD), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI) and bleeding on probing (BoP). Gingival recession (GR) was assessed as secondary outcome, and was measured as the development or progression of GR, shown by the apical migration of the gingival margin occurring between pre- and post-orthodontic treatment. Each periodontal index was assessed in three-time points; short-term (2-3 months from baseline), mid-term (6-9 months from baseline), and long-term (12 months or more from baseline). A descriptive analysis of included articles was performed. Pairwise meta-analyses were conducted to compare outcomes assessed in FA and CA groups and were only performed when studies reported similar periodontal indices at similar follow-ups., Results: 12 studies (3 RCTs, 8 prospective cohort studies, 1 retrospective cohort study) were included in the qualitative synthesis, of which, 8 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). A total of 612 patients (321 treated with buccal FA and 291 with CA) were assessed. Results from meta-analyses favored CA in regards to PI, demonstrating a significant difference in the mid-term follow-up (number of studies = 4, standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.94 to -0.03, I 2  = 99%, P = 0.04). There was a tendency to report better GI values with CA, specifically in long-term (number of studies = 2, SMD = -0.46 [95% CI, -1.03 to 0.11], I 2  = 96%, P = 0.11). However, no statistical significance between the two treatment modalities was shown for any follow-up intervals (P > 0.05). As for PPD, the long-term follow-up showed statistical significance favoring CA (SMD = -0.93 [95% CI, -1.06 to 0.7], P < 0.0001), whereas short- and mid-term follow-ups did not show significant differences between FA and CA. Overall, patients treated with CA showed better values of BoP and less GR when compared to patients treated with FA., Conclusions: Available evidence is still not enough to conclude the superiority of clear aligner therapy in terms of periodontal status during orthodontic treatment compared to fixed appliances., (© 2023. Design: Single-center randomized clinical trial with two parallel arms. The protocol of the study was approved by the institutional review board (IRB) of the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University (IRB: 00010556-IORG: 0008839) and registered in Clinicaltrials.gov (identifier number: NCT04225637). Before the trial commencement, parents/legal guardians signed informed consents. The study complied with the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials)., Case Selection: 30 adolescent patients aged between 12 to 16 years with transversely deficient maxilla requiring skeletal maxillary expansion were recruited to be included in the study. Patients received miniscrew-supported Penn expanders and they were randomly allocated (ratio 1:1) into two groups based on the activation protocol; slow maxillary expansion (SME = turn every other day) or rapid maxillary expansion (RME = 2 turn/day)., Data Analysis: The patient-reported outcome measures were the following: pain, headache, pressure, dizziness, speech, chewing and swallowing difficulties, swallowing difficulty. The participants rated the reported outcomes using numeric rating scale (NRS) at 4 time points: t 1  = before appliance insertion, t 2  = after first activation, t 3  = after 1 week of activation, and t 4  = after last activation. Patients were advised not to use analgesics, and to contact their provider in case of severe pain. Descriptive measures and patient-reported outcomes at various time points were calculated. Comparisons between the two groups at each time point were assessed using Mann-Whitney U-test. Comparisons of time points in each group were assessed using the Friedman test and followed by post-hoc tests with Bonferroni correction., Results: 6 patients were not included in the analysis for different reasons, allowing a total of 24 patients (12 patients in each group) to be analyzed. Mean ages of the patients in the SME and RME group were 14.30 ± 1.37 and 15.07 ± 1.59, respectively. Median scores were in the bottom quartiles of NRS for all reported outcomes. RME group reported significantly higher scores for all measured variables, with exception of headache and dizziness, which showed no statistical difference between the two group., Conclusions: Mild to moderate discomfort and functional limitation is anticipated with the activation of miniscrew-anchored Penn expanders. Purpose: This cross-sectional study aimed to utilize quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to investigate the influence of genetic variance over teeth inclination and angulation in orthodontic patients with Class I occlusion., Materials and Methods: DNA was extracted from adolescent patients seeking orthodontic treatment in a single institution (from July 2018 to April 2020), who had CBCTs taken as part of initial standardized records. Patients had permanent dentition, Class I skeletal and dental classifications, with normal vertical and transverse skeletal dimensions, normal incisors inclination, no to mild crowding or spacing. qPCR was performed using genetic markers for candidate genes EPB41, TGFβ3, GHR and PAX9. Three-dimensional teeth inclinations (TI) and angulations (TA) were evaluated using Invivo6 software and correlated with genotypes. Reliability of TI and TA was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Mixed models and multiple linear regression analyses were used to assess the association between each single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with tooth inclination (TI) and with tooth angulation (TA). The review question was defined in PICO format as follows: population (P) = patients (no age restriction) undergoing orthodontic treatment using fixed, removable, or functional appliances, or patients in the retention phase that are wearing fixed or removable retainers; intervention (I) = mobile applications and social media-based interventions; comparison (C) = control group that did not receive any adjunctive intervention; outcome (O) = behavior changes in orthodontic patients after receipt of the intervention. Two authors independently conducted literature search from inception up to March 2021., Data Analysis: Social media-based interventions and mobile applications (or bespoke) were used in the form of reminders (WhatsApp reminders) and provision of information including YouTube videos and Instagram posts. Primary outcomes included adherence to wearing appliances or adjuncts, oral hygiene levels, oral health-related behaviors, periodontal outcomes, appointment attendance, knowledge, and related iatrogenic effects. Treatment-related experiences and patient-reported outcomes were assessed as secondary outcomes., Results: 16 studies (14 RCTs and 2 CCTs) were included in the qualitative synthesis, of which only 7 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). Results from meta-analyses showed that the intervention was favored in relation to gingival index (GI) (number of studies = 4, standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.35 to -0.28, P = 0.00, certainty of evidence = very low), plaque index (PI) (number of studies = 7, SMD = -0.91 [95% CI, -1.64 to -0.19], P = 0.01, certainty of evidence = very low), and bleeding index (BI) (number of studies = 4, SMD = -0.22 [95% CI, -0.50 to 0.05], P = 0.11, certainty of evidence = high). Sensitivity analysis was performed (including additional 3 studies for GI and 5 studies for PI), which also favored the intervention in relation to GI (number of studies = 7, SMD = -0.60 [95% CI, -1.01 to -0.18], P = 0.00, certainty of evidence = very low), and PI (number of studies = 12, SMD = -0.67 [95% CI, -1.14 to -0.19], P = 0.01, certainty of evidence = very low)., Conclusions: Limited evidence supports beneficial behavior change among orthodontic patients when using mobile applications or social media-based interventions., (© 2023. Introduction: Presurgical infant orthopedics was introduced as an interceptive approach for treating cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). This study aimed to evaluate the intraoral digital impression technique as a viable alternative to conventional impression in infants with unilateral CLP., Methods: Trios 3-Shape scanner (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used for intraoral scanning of the infants' maxillary arches to provide a direct digital scan (DDS). In addition, conventional impressions of the same patients were taken in a hospital setting, and the resultant stone models were digitized using the same scanner to create an indirect digital scan (IDS). Both scans (DDS and IDS) were exported in stereolithography format, and the resultant stereolithography files were imported into computer-assisted-design software (Exocad DentalCAD; exocad GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) for 3-dimensional surface model superimposition. Differences between the 2 surfaces were quantified in millimeters and visually displayed by a color map., Results: Three-dimensional surface model superimposition of the DDS and IDS scans showed an excellent agreement between both approaches, in which differences ranged from 0.01 mm to 0.1 mm CONCLUSIONS: Intraoral direct digital impression in infants with unilateral CLP is a safe, accurate, and time-efficient technique, which can be a viable alternative to conventional impression. Background: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a clinical entity characterized by sensory-motor manifestations commonly observed in end-stage renal illness. Evidence suggests that RLS is a multifactorial phenomenon that can be influenced by many critical factors, including genetic predisposition, dietary patterns, and deficiency in some vitamins. Iron metabolism disorders and metabolic derangements have been generally accepted as predisposing elements in RLS. Furthermore, both pharmacological and neuroimaging studies demonstrated dopamine deficiency and dopamine receptors decrease in basal ganglia during RLS., Review Summary: A literature search was done in three databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane) to identify the pertinent articles discussing the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of RLS in hemodialysis patients. RLS can affect the morbidity and mortality of patients treated with dialysis. It also has significant impacts on the quality of life since it can lead to insomnia, increased fatigue, mental health troubles, and other movement problems. Appropriate measures should be considered in this particular population so to prevent and treat RLS. Many drugs and other nonpharmacological methods have been investigated to attenuate the disease's severity. No treatment, however, could offer long-term effects., Conclusion: Further efforts are still required to improve the understanding of RLS pathogenic trends to find more specific and efficient therapies. In recent years, polysaccharides-based nanocomposites have been used for biomedical applications. In the current study, a nanocomposite based on myco-synthesized copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and starch was prepared. The prepared nanocomposite was fully characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), mapping, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Results revealed that this nanocomposite is characterized by nano spherical shape ranged around 200 nm as well as doped with CuNPs with size about 9 nm. Antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities of the prepared nanocomposite were evaluated. Results revealed that CuNPs-based nanocomposite exhibited outstanding antibacterial and antifungal activity toward Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Bacillus subtilis ATCC605, Candida albicans ATCC90028, Cryptococcus neoformance ATCC 14,116, Aspergillus niger RCMB 02,724, A. terreus RCMB 02,574, and A. fumigatus RCMB 02,568. Moreover, CuNPs-based nanocomposite has a strong antioxidant activity as compared to ascorbic acid, where IC 50 was 18 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity test of CuNPs-based nanocomposite revealed that this nanocomposite is safe in use, where IC 50 was 185.1 µg/mL. Furthermore, CuNPs-based nanocomposite exhibited potential anticancer activity against MCF7 cancerous cell line where IC 50 was 62.8 µg/mL which was better than CuNPs alone. Tri-nanocomposite system of biocompatible polymers (gelatin/gum arabic) functionalized onto graphene-oxide nanosheets for controlling the release of an anticancer, doxorubicin (DOX), was fabricated via green-biosynthesis. Biocompatibility and nano-size stability of the tri-nanocomposite was characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, and zeta-potential. Loading-efficiency, release-behavior and cytotoxic-activity of DOX-loaded-composite in WI-38 normal-lung-fibroblast and A549 lung-carcinoma cells were investigated. High DOX-loading (at pH 9.5), with pH-sensitive release from loaded-composite was achieved, with 25% and 77% DOX released, at physiological pH 7.4 and cancerous pH 5.3, respectively. Stability of tri-nanocomposite system was confirmed over 3-months storage at accelerated conditions, as presented by FTIR, XRD, TEM, zeta-potential and in-vitro release assays. High proliferative inhibitory effect of DOX loaded-composite, on A549-cells, with minimal toxicity on WI-38-cells, with IC 50 values of 51.9 ± 0.46 and 185±1.08 µg/mL, against A549 and WI-38, respectively. In this study, cotton fabrics based on zinc oxide nanoparticles in situ synthesis, acyclovir, nanochitosan, and clove oil were treated. The treated cotton fabrics were examined by FTIR, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, EDAX, and the surface roughness processing of FE-SEM images. The obtained characterization data emphasized the nano-size of nanocomposite with high homogeneity of particles in spherical shape as well as affirmed the deposition of nanocomposite onto the textile fibers with concluded that the deposition of nanocomposite was increased parallel with sonication time. Antimicrobial and antiviral activities of treated cotton fabrics were evaluated. Results revealed that treated cotton fabrics exhibited promising antibacterial activity toward Gram-positive higher than Gram-negative bacteria. Likewise, treated cotton fabrics are still effective as antibacterial after washing for 100 cycles. Moreover, treated cotton fabrics exhibited potential antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus fumigatus. The antiviral activity significantly depended on the type of virus. The treated cotton fabrics showed antiviral activity against tested viral particles (HSV-1, Adeno, and CoxB2) with viral inhibition of 95.9, 76.4, and 86.9% respectively, while in the case of coated cotton textile with acyclovir, it only exhibited viral inhibition of 49.9, 41, and 22.3% respectively., (© 2021. In this present work, a new design for antimicrobial wound bandages is presented. The wound dressings were prepared using cotton fibers reinforced with elastic compression straps and secured with a polyester fabric of tight mesh size. The cotton pads were doped with a wound healing biocomposite, composed of chitosan, glycogen, and ZnO nanoparticles (CG@ZnONPs) previously formulated through a green process. The size of ZnONPs in the prepared CG@ZnONPs was 30-80 nm. The cotton pads impregnated with the CG@ZnONPs nanocomposite were characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDX, TGA, and DTGA methods. Moreover, the prepared dressings were tested on a number of intentionally injured rats. In this experiment, the % contraction of the treated wounds was monitored and compared to that of a control group of wounded rats, to which only sterile gauzes were applied. The results showed a much faster and an almost complete healing of rats treated with the synthesized dressings and the results were further confirmed by histopathological examination. The dressings were also found to exert a significant antimicrobial activity against a number of pathogenic microorganisms, generally encountered in common wounds, and could therefore be recommended to be a novel biomedical application for a fast, successful, and flawless wounds healing process., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. In this work, biocompatible, antimicrobial, and antiviral nanocomposites were prepared through two steps. In the first step, periodate oxidation of cellulose was performed to get dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). The second step included the reaction of DAC with sulfur-containing amino acids included Cysteine (Cys) and Methionine (Meth) in the presence of graphene oxide (GO). The prepared nanocomposites were characterized via FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and TGA. Antimicrobial and antiviral activities for all designed nanocomposites besides DAC were carried out. Both DAC/GO/Cys and DAC/GO/Meth exhibited a promising antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa), Gram-positive (B. subtilis and S. aureus), and unicellular fungi (C. Albicans and C. neoformans), while the DAC/GO/Cys/Meth nanocomposite was the lowest. Moreover, all designed nanocomposites have a strong antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus 1(HSV-1) at minimum nontoxic concentration. Additionally, Computational procedures and Molecular docking showed the reactivity and stability of the molecules that have biological activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and HSV-1. In the present work, sustainable and green method was used to prepare silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), followed with incorporation into tertiary nanocomposite consisted of starch, oxidized cellulose and ethyl cellulose. The prepared tertiary silver-nanocomposite (Ag-NC) was fully characterized via instrumental analysis (UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX and TEM) and evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities. Ag-NC significantly suppressed growth of tested bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis)  as compared with controls. Antifungal activity revealed that the prepared tertiary Ag-NC has a promising antifungal activity towards unicellular (Candida albicans) and multicellular fungi  ( Aspergillus niger, A. terreus, A. flavus and A. fumigatus). In same line, both Ag-NC and free Ag-NPs have shown a dose-dependent reduction in Vero cell line with maximum non-toxic dose at 6.25 and 12.5 μg/mL, respectively. Both Ag-NPs and Ag-NC exhibited antiviral effects against Herpes simplex virus, Adenovirus and Coxsackie B virus in a dose-dependent manner. Combined treatment of Ag-NPs incorporated into tertiary nanocomposite based on starch, oxidized cellulose and ethyl cellulose opens new possibilities to be more efficient nanomaterials for preventing microbial growth. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate craniofacial characteristics and upper airway morphology in adolescents with Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) compared to controls (CON)., Materials and Methods: Records from July 2014 to May 2018 of patients who were seeking orthodontic treatment at a single institute and had full pre-treatment orthodontic records including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were reviewed. Comprehensive cephalometric variables were measured to determine craniofacial morphology. Upper airway volume (UAV), minimum cross-sectional area (MCA), and linear measurements were calculated at multiple planes., Results: A total of 87 adolescents (ADHD, 29; CON, 58) were included in the study. Overall, UAV and MCA in ADHA group were smaller than CON. Statistical significance was evident in airway widths at planes A (P=0.002), C (P=0.042), and D (P<0.001), and airway area at plane D (lower hypopharynx) (P<0.001), with the ADHD group showing narrower widths and area compared to CON. The most common skeletal classification in the ADHD group was sequenced as Class II, Class I then Class III, with percentages of (58.6%), (31%) and (10.3%), respectively. No significant differences were found between the groups for any of the skeletal, dental, and soft tissue cephalometric variables., Conclusions: ADHD affected adolescents have similar craniofacial characteristics, but narrower upper airway dimensions compared to controls. Microbial infections are considered common and dangerous for humans among other infections; therefore the synthesis of high efficacy antimicrobial and anti-biofilm composites is continuous to fight microbial resistance. In our study, a new and novel tertiary composite (TC) was synthesized, it composed of TEMPO cellulose (TOC), chitosan, starch, and myco-synthesized Se-NPs. Myco-synthesized Se-NPs and TC were fully characterized using UV, FT-IR, XRD, SEM with EDX, particle distribution, and mapping. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties of selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) were effectively established for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. The possible impact of myco-synthesized novel cellulose-based selenium nanoparticles tertiary composite on the biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and Candida albicans was evaluated in this study. Fungal biofilms have caused several medical problems, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality as well as poor response to antifungal drugs. The current study was designed to evaluate the enhancement of antifungal and anti-biofilm activity of Griseofulvin-loaded green nanocomposite-based biopolymers (Ge-Nco) of glycogen and gelatin against different strains of pathogenic Candida species. The prepared Ge-Nco was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). In addition, the morphology of the mature biofilm and the inhibition of biofilm was monitored and visualized using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and (IC50) of Griseofulvin alone and the prepared Ge-Nco against three different strains of Candida sp. were determined according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) method. The effects of Griseofulvin alone and Ge-Nco on the tested Candida sp. biofilm formation were determined by the crystal-violet staining protocol. The biofilm inhibition potential of Ge-Nco against the tested Candida sp. was detected and depicted under CLSM (2.5 D view). The findings depicted that Ge-Nco was prepared in nanometer size (10-23 nm). The observed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Griseofulvin alone and Ge-Nco against three different Candida sp. were found to be in range 49.9-99.8 μg/mL and 6.24-12.48 μg/mL, respectively. These results provide evidence for implementing efficient antivirulence approaches against three different Candida sp. that would be less likely to foster the emergence of resistance.

The current work focuses on a cheap and simple preparation of highly conducting chitosan/hydroxyl ethylcellulose/polyaniline loaded with graphene oxide doped by silver nanoparticles (CS/HEC/PAni/GO@Ag) bionanocomposite as a biodegradable and biocompatible hydrogel for energy storage technology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displays the compatibility of chitosan, hydroxyl ethyl cellulose, and polyaniline and a good distribution of GO@Ag-NPs in bionanocomposite hydrogels. X-ray diffraction (XRD) displayed the structure and existence of GO@Ag-NPs in the matrix. The swelling percentage and the antibacterial activities slightly increased with raising the content of GO@Ag-NPs. Also, the presence of both chitosan and cellulose improves the biodegradation of the fabricated bionanocomposites, which is increased by adding GO. Moreover, the incorporation of 5% GO@Ag-NPs in hydrogels enhances dc-conductivity by about 25 times from 3.37 × 10 -3 to 8.53 × 10 -2 S/cm. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as an important route of microplastics (MPs) to the environment. Therefore, more effective MPs sampling and detection methodologies, as well as a better understanding of their influence on MPs occurrence and distributions in WWTP effluents, are needed for better removal and control. In this work, the efficiency of a municipal WWTP to remove MPs was assessed by collecting samples from raw to tertiary effluent during a 12-month sampling campaign (season-based) using different sampling methods (containers, 24-h composite and large grab samples). MPs retrieved from different treatment units within the WWTP were identified and quantified using plastic/non-plastic staining followed by optical microscopy, SEM and μ-Raman microscopy. Overall, the mean removal efficiency of MPs in the WWTP was 97%, with most MPs removed by the secondary stage and a mean effluent concentration of 1.97 MPs L -1 after sand filtration. The relative abundance of particles was lower than fibers in treated effluent compared with the raw wastewater, with MP fibers constituting 74% of the total MPs in raw wastewater and 91% in treated effluent. Taking seasonal variations into account is important as total MPs concentration in the effluent was notably higher in winter compared with the other seasons. Increasing the sampled volume using large samples or 24-h composite samples significantly reduced the variability between replicates. However, MPs concentration post the tertiary stage was significantly lower using morning sampling (9 am) by large grab sampling method (1.2 MPs L -1 ) compared to 24-h composite sampling (3.2 MPs L -1 ) possibly due to intra-daily changes. Cryogel materials are composed of porous and lightweight structures that can be used for many industrial applications, particularly, in agriculture for the controlled release of Tebuconazole fungicide. Accordingly, we prepared environmentally friendly cryogel using natural polymers such hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and bacterial cellulose (BC). The cryogel was formed by blending aqueous solutions of both HEC and BC, which was then crosslinked with glyoxal and the mixture was underwent to drying using freeze drying technique. Different concentrations of the as prepared silver@titanium oxide nanoparticles (Ag@TiO 2 NPs) were incorporated within the cryogel formation in order to increase its antimicrobial efficiency. A mode pesticide Tebuconazole was encapsulated in the cryogel platform in order to control the release of Tebuconazole. Thus, the developed cryogel which was porous, cheap and had an antimicrobial effect, controlled pesticide release suggesting that it is a potential candidate for agricultural applications., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. New chitosan derivatives bearing guanidinium functions were synthesized following different synthesis strategies. N-guanidinium chitosan acetate and N-guanidinium chitosan chloride were synthesized by direct reaction between chitosan and cyanamide in the presence of scandium(III) triflate. The synthesis of N-guanidinium chitosan (N,N'-dicyclohexyl) chloride and N-guanidinium chitosan (N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethyl hydrochloride) chloride involved the reaction of chitosan with carbodiimides in ionic liquid. The chitosan derivatives were characterized by analytical techniques including 13 C solid state NMR, FT-IR spectroscopies, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. The antimicrobial properties of chitosan and the new derivatives were investigated using the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) technique. All new guanylated chitosan derivatives displayed high antimicrobial activity in comparison with neat chitosan. The N-guanidinium chitosan acetate reduced the time required for killing to half in comparison with chitosan and recorded MIC values less than 3.125 mg/mL against all assayed microorganisms. Objectives: Patients in active fixed orthodontic treatment or fixed retention phase may require magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the head and neck region. Orthodontists are challenged to decide whether to keep or remove orthodontic appliances prior to the scans. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of orthodontic appliances on the diagnostic capability of MR images., Methods: Four electronic databases were searched, with no language restrictions, from database inception to October 2016: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, EBMR. A search in Google Scholar and ProQuest, as well as a manual search, were also conducted. Two independent reviewers assessed articles for inclusion. Original studies including any orthodontic appliance on human subjects were considered. Outcomes measured were development of artefacts, diagnostic quality, accuracy, and treatment outcomes. Risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment and QUADAS-2 tools., Results: Five of 1052 studies identified were included in the final qualitative synthesis. A total of 90 adult human subjects were included. Orthodontic appliances evaluated were brackets, bands, archwires, and fixed retainers. The outcomes assessed were production of artefacts, diagnostic quality and diagnostic accuracy. Detrimental effects on diagnostic quality, and subsequently diagnostic accuracy, rose with increased stainless steel (SS) and proximity to anatomic area of interest. Orthodontic appliances may render images uninterpretable and non-diagnostic., Conclusions: There is fair evidence to suggest orthodontic appliances, mainly those with SS, cause MR artefacts. Removal of metal orthodontic appliances prior to MR scans is recommended, especially if the area of interest is near the orthodontic appliance. Biodegradable, antimicrobial, and semiconducting cellulosic composite was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of polyaniline in the presence of cellulose. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFO-NPs) were added during the polymerization process to acquire this composite magnetic property. The CFO-NPs were prepared by sol-gel method with average particles size less than 50 nm. The nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). In addition, their magnetic, dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and conductivity behaviors were studied. The magnetization (M s ) and conductivity increased up to 3.7 emu/g and 3.5 × 10 -3  S/cm, respectively, with increasing CFO-NPs content. The prepared electromagnetic nanocomposite exhibits highly efficient biodegradability and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans. Nowadays the using of eco-systems to synthesize new materials is the promising issue. In this work, new eco-synthesis method was developed to prepare antimicrobial cellulosic-amino acid base ligand and complexes with copper. The complex was characterized via different instrumental analysis (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-vis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX)) as well as two antimicrobial screening tools (minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) and time required for killing). The UV-vis spectroscopic data indicates the metal to-ligand charge transfer transitions which is consistent with square planar geometry. DLS and SEM approved that the complex particles are in nano-size. Prepared complex appeared highly antimicrobial activity against all tested microbial organisms which can be described as broad spectrum antimicrobial agent.
