339.2 ,Thesis - Abstract
This thesis is comprised of three chapters which focus on inequality, and more closely, on the trends in inequality over time. Firstly, the second chapter addresses the issue of non-random selection into employment in the intergenerational mobility literature, by applying bounds to the distribution of wages conditional on parent income. We use the labour market attachment of the mother as a novel instrumental variable to tighten the bounds to the distribution of earnings. We find that there are substantial differences between parent income groups and changes over time by son's and daughter's. We find college to be important for all groups, but particularly for daughters. In addition, there is evidence of converging wages between sons and daughters for all parent income types over time. The third chapter looks at the idea of a society in which everybody is the same at the same stage of the life-cycle will exhibit substantial income and wealth inequality. We use this idea to empirically quantify natural inequality - the share of observed inequality attributable to life- cycle profiles of income and wealth. We document that recent increases in inequality in developed countries are larger than observed rates would suggest. Extrapolating our measures forward suggests that natural inequalities will fluctuate over the next 20 years before settling to a new higher level. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we document that male median Zeal incomes have been lower than that of their forebears, at every age, for the last 30 years. We show that this is true across the life-cycle, and that younger generations have had to wait longer to reach peak earnings. Further analysis shows that this decline is particularly concentrated on high-school graduates. We further decompose the decline in labour share being more prominent for later generations, across most industries.

Aim: To explore the effects of two interventions on pain anxiety in the context of chronic pain. Methods: The study used a mixed measures, multiple single-case A-B-A-C design. Six participants (adults with chronic pain) received two baseline (A) and two intervention phases (B and C): a brief CBT intervention and the ‘Go-With-the Flow’ (GWtF) sonification of movement. Participants completed a daily movement (that is usually painful) with associated measures (anxiety and pain ratings, heart-rate and degrees of bend achieved). At the end of each phase, participants additionally videoed their movements (which were independently rated for ‘guarding’ by pain physiotherapists) and completed the Pain Self-Efficacy and Pain Catastrophising Scale questionnaires (PSEQ/PCS). Qualitative data about participants’ experiences of the two interventions were collected at the end of participation. Quantitative data were analysed visually and statistically using Tau-U methods and McNemar tests. PSEQ and PCS data were assessed for reliable change, and qualitative data were thematically analysed. Results: The impact of each intervention on pain anxiety was variable across participants. Qualitative data indicated that brief CBT was generally the preferred intervention but neither intervention yielded a statistically significant improvement in pain anxiety in most cases. GWtF was associated with a statistically significant increase in bend achieved from baseline for the group as a collective. However, this finding was balanced by qualitative data which indicated that most participants would not use GWtF in its current format. Conclusion: Both interventions were associated with benefit for some participants, and successfully used at home without significant difficulty. As such, both could, with further development, increase accessibility to psychologically-informed intervention for problems associated with chronic pain.

TOOTH abrasion ,ARCHAEOLOGICAL human remains ,OSTEOARTHRITIS ,TEMPOROMANDIBULAR joint ,DENTAL occlusion - Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease commonly identified in archaeological human remains. This condition primarily affects stress‐bearing joints, which include the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Comparing dental status and degenerative alterations of the TMJs of individuals is crucial for understanding the role of the former in increasing predisposition to temporomandibular OA. The combination of visual and radiologic observations allows for a more in‐depth assessment of TMJ‐OA in archaeological specimens. A comparative study between tooth wear and the extent of degenerative signs on mandibular condylar surfaces was conducted on individuals from two medieval cemeteries in central Europe (Früebergstrasse in Baar and Dalheim). OA, tooth wear, and AMTL were evaluated in 41 individuals comprising both adult specimens as well as those of a more advanced age. Condylar OA was diagnosed in 14 individuals (Baar, n = 7; Dalheim, n = 7). No specific sex predisposition for OA in TMJs was found in the study's sample. Tooth wear was more severe in individuals with condyles affected by OA than in individuals whose condyles showed no degenerative signs. Although dental occlusion could not be evaluated, tooth wear values seem to point to diverse mastication patterns when there is unilateral or bilateral manifestation of mandibular OA in the two medieval populations under study. 613.95 - Abstract
This thesis examines how a diverse group of participants in England make sense of condom use, exploring how talk about condoms relates to the operation of and resistance to social inequalities, and examining how public health discourse is taken up and reformulated in everyday talk about sex. It takes a feminist, discursive rhetorical approach, combining this with an exploration of how particular discourses about condom use can be understood to be ideological. The thesis draws on data from surveys, interviews and a media case study of The Jeremy Kyle Show: situating a fine-grained analysis of the discursive construction of condom lise within the context of a broader understanding of the operation of power in the everyday. In addition, the work develops the use of private diaries as a tool for interview research about intimate life. The research explores how talk about condom use can work to construct subjects, developing the concept 'safer sexual subjectivity'. The discursive construction of ' safer subjects' was found to work in complex ways with existing social categories such as 'race', class and gender, with particular subjects marked as more 'risky' than others. Talk about condom use reproduced, resisted and reworked norms of gender, sex and relationships. New norDis of gendered responsibility positioned skillful condom use as a strategy of selfcare and regulation of neoliberal sexual subjectivity. Public health discourse was taken up and reworked by participants, producing new forms of intimacy and desire. The thesis concludes that the negotiation of condom use is not simply an in the moment activity that happens during sex, or a 'healthy choice' made by rational actors. Talk about condom use serves rhetorical purposes in positioning people and communities, categorising relationships and developing norms about sexual practices and gender identities.

- Abstract
Drawing on 24 group interviews on celebrity with 148 students aged 14-17 across six schools, we show that "hard work" is valued by young people in England. We argue that we should not simply celebrate this investment in hard work. While it opens up successful subjectivities to previously excluded groups, it reproduces neoliberal meritocratic discourses and class and gender distinctions.

- Abstract
Background:\ud Canine obesity is a growing problem, both in New Zealand and overseas. Veterinary nurses play a vital role as part of the veterinary healthcare team in ensuring clients are provided with timely, accurate, and consistent advice, and this includes advice relating to a pet's nutritional status and body condition.\ud Aim:\ud To investigate if there were any differences in body condition scores assigned to images of canines by veterinary nurses working in urban, suburban, and rural settings.\ud Methods:\ud Veterinary nurses (restricted to those with a minimum of 2 years formal training) in New Zealand were recruited online and asked to complete a short, online survey providing a body condition score for 10 dogs of varying morphology, via a photograph.\ud Results:\ud There were 77 useable responses and results showed no significant difference to the score assigned by veterinary nurses in different geographical settings.\ud Conclusion:\ud These results provide assurances to the consistency of body condition score being assigned by veterinary nurses in New Zealand, showing that geographical setting is not a confounding factor in a veterinary nurse's interpretation of body condition. While this result is optimistic, further research is needed to determine if this consistency is present across other members of the healthcare team.

The parasympathetic (P) nervous system is thought to contribute significantly to focal atrial fibrillation (AF). Thus we hypothesized that P nerve fibers [and related muscarinic ([M.sub.2]) receptors] are preferentially located in the posterior left atrium (PLA) and that selective cholinergic blockade in the PLA can be successfully performed to alter vagal AF substrate. The PLA, pulmonary veins (PVs), and left atrial appendage (LAA) from six dogs were immunostained for sympathetic (S) nerves, P nerves, and M2 receptors. Epicardial electrophysiological mapping was performed in seven additional dogs. The PLA was the most richly innervated, with nerve bundles containing P and S fibers (0.9 [+ or -] 1, 3.2 [+ or -] 2.5, and 0.17 [+ or -] 0.3/[cm.sup.2] in the PV, PLA, and LAA, respectively, P < 0.001); nerve bundles were located in fibrofatty tissue as well as in surrounding myocardium. P fibers predominated over S fibers within bundles (P-to-S ratio = 4.4, 7.2, and 5.8 in PV, PLA, and LAA, respectively). [M.sub.2] distribution was also most pronounced in the PLA (17.8 [+ or -] 8.3, 14.3 [+ or -] 7.3, and 14.5 [+ or -] 8 [M.sub.2]-stained cells/[cm.sup.2] in the PLA, PV, and LAA, respectively, P = 0.012). Left cervical vagal stimulation (VS) caused significant effective refractory period shortening in all regions, with easily inducible AF. Topical application of 1% tropicamide to the PLA significantly attenuated VS-induced effective refractory period shortening in the PLA, PV, and LAA and decreased AF inducibility by 92% (P < 0.001). We conclude that 1) P fibers and [M.sub.2] receptors are preferentially located in the PLA, suggesting an important role for this region in creation of vagal AF substrate and 2) targeted P blockade in the PLA is feasible and results in attenuation of vagal responses in the entire left atrium and, consequently, a change in AF substrate. nervous system; autonomic; immunohistochemistry

RC0321 - Abstract
Projection neurons located in the superficial layers of the entorhinal cortex provide the hippocampus with nearly all its sensory input. This innervation occurs via multiple discrete pathways to different targets within the hippocampus, including the perforant and temporoammonic paths, as well as via direct projections to area CA2. This segregation of sensory information suggests that these input streams each play a separate role in declarative memory. The actions of modulatory neurotransmitters on the excitability of projection neurons in the entorhinal cortex may be instrumental in filtering the content of sensory signals destined for processing by different hippocampal subfields and, the lateral division of the entorhinal cortex receives dense dopaminergic innervation from the ventral tegmental area. But little is known about potential dopamine-mediated effects on the propagation of sensory information from the entorhinal cortex to the hippocampus. To determine this, multiple intracellular recording methods were used to assess the intrinsic excitability of principal neurons located in superficial layers II and III of the lateral entorhinal cortex in juvenile rat brain slices maintained in vitro before, during and after treatment with dopamine. Initial immunolabelling experiments using antibodies against the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase confirmed the presence of catecholaminergic fibres in the superficial layers of the lateral entorhinal cortex, and that these fibres overlapped considerably with both the somata and neuropil of principal neurons in layers II and III. Moreover, there was a significant difference in the expression pattern of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive fibres across each cortical layer with fluorescent labelling highest in layers I, V and VI, followed next by layer III and then by layer II. This differential innervation pattern supports the notion that dopamine may modulate network activity within each layer of the lateral entorhinal cortex in a slightly different way. Although initial whole-cell recording experiments were somewhat inconclusive, there was a reliable suppression of spiking activity in superficial layer neurons following the addition of 100 μM dopamine to the bathing medium. More focal application of dopamine delivered via pressure injection directly to layer II and layer III neurons individually, however, suggested that neurons in layer III were more sensitive to the suppressive effects of dopamine on excitability. Most layer III neurons stopped spiking in response to ‘puffs’ of dopamine whereas layer II neurons were only mildly affected by the same treatment. The perforated patch clamp method was then used to assess the effects of dopamine on neuronal excitability in layer II and layer III projection neurons separately over an extended period (60 min). Bath-application of 100 μM dopamine for 10-min affected layer II and III neurons differently, with layer II neurons responding more strongly to treatment. In both layers, dopamine caused a significant attenuation of spiking activity, but only layer II neurons showed coincident changes in membrane potential and membrane resistance linked to the suppression of cell firing. Taken together, these findings show that the strength of dopaminergic projections to each layer of the lateral entorhinal cortex differs, and that this distinct pattern of innervation affects the excitability of layer II and layer III projection neurons in unique ways. As such, dopaminergic inputs to the lateral entorhinal cortex may serve to regulate the flow of sensory signals to different targets in the hippocampus depending on the salience of ongoing motivational, appetitive or affective factors known to recruit the mesocortical dopamine system.

The objective of the study was to investigate the morphology, distribution, and electrophysiological profile of the autonomic fibers that innervate the ligament of Marshall (LOM). Gross anatomical dissections were performed in 10 dogs. Sections of the left vagus nerve, left stellate ganglion, and the LOM were immunostained to identify adrenergic and cholinergic nerves. Hearts were also stained for acetylcholinesterase to identify epicardial cholinergic nerves. In vivo electropyhsiological studies were performed in another 10 dogs before and after LOM ablation. The anatomical examination revealed that the LOM is innervated by a branch of the left vagus. Immunohistochemistry confirmed that these nerve bundles are predominantly cholinergic (cholinergic-to-adrenergic ratio of 12.6 [+ or -] 3.9:1). Cholinergic nerves originating in the LOM were found to innervate surrounding left atrial structures, including the pulmonary veins, left atrial appendage, coronary sinus, and posterior left atrial fat pad. Ablation of the LOM significantly attenuated effective refractory period shortening at distant sites, such as pulmonary veins and left atrial appendage, in response to vagal stimulation (vagal-induced ERP decrease in the left atrium: baseline vs. postablation = 17 vs. 4%; P = 0.0056). In conclusion, the LOM contains a predominance of cholinergic nerve fibers. Cholinergic fibers arising from the LOM innervate surrounding structures and contribute to the electrophysiological profile of the left atrium. These findings may provide a basis for the role of the LOM in the genesis and maintenance of atrial fibrillation. ablation; arrhythmia (mechanisms); autonomic nervous system; innervation; supraventricular arrhythmia

eGirls, eCitizens is a landmark work that explores the many forces that shape girls’ and young women’s experiences of privacy, identity, and equality in our digitally networked society. Drawing on the multi-disciplinary expertise of a remarkable team of leading Canadian and international scholars, as well as Canada’s foremost digital literacy organization, MediaSmarts, this collection presents the complex realities of digitized communications for girls and young women as revealed through the findings of The eGirls Project (www.egirlsproject.ca) and other important research initiatives. Aimed at moving dialogues on scholarship and policy around girls and technology away from established binaries of good vs bad, or risk vs opportunity, these seminal contributions explore the interplay of factors that shape online environments characterized by a gendered gaze and too often punctuated by sexualized violence. Perhaps most importantly, this collection offers first-hand perspectives collected from girls and young women themselves, providing a unique window on what it is to be a girl in today’s digitized society.
