Tenure-track/tenured faculty at higher education institutions are expected to teach, conduct research and provide service as part of their promotion and tenure process, the relative importance of each component varying with the position and/or the university. However, based on the author's personal experience, feedback received from several colleagues, and review of research on this topic, the authors note that there is considerable concern among many faculty members as to what constitutes an optimal mix of the critical components of evaluation. Consequently, the authors present a cost-benefit utilitarian model using which, the faculty member can objectively allocate his/her limited resources, such as time commitment and effort, between teaching and research activities. The authors believe that such a blueprint will prove to be a critical tool for the tenure-track candidate, as well as for the university administration. One of the notable features of the proscribed tool is that it is not discipline-specific and therefore, has a wide application in university governance.

Although the main goal of the original NAFTA treaty was to promote trade among the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, exchange rate uncertainty among the members is still a factor affecting trade. A previous study that assessed asymmetric effects of the real peso‐dollar volatility on trade flows between Mexico and the U.S. used the nonlinear ARDL approach and found that increased (decreased) volatility hurts (boosts) exports of nearly 50% of the industries that trade between the two countries. In this paper, we carry out the same analysis using trade data from 34 (24) large U.S. exporting (importing) industries to (from) Canada. We find that nearly 38% of the industries are affected by the U.S. dollar‐Canadian dollar volatility. However, the majority of the affected industries export more when exchange rate volatility increases or decreases. It appears that traders are more risk tolerant in the case of U.S.‐Canada trade but risk averse in the case of U.S.‐Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies that assessed the impact of exchange rate volatility on Australian trade flows assumed that the effects are symmetric, meaning that if an x% increase in volatility hurts trade flows by y%, an x% decreased in volatility, boosts trade flows by y%. The new direction in the literature is to engage in asymmetric analysis, since the rate at which trade flows respond to increased volatility could be different than the rate at which they response to declines. We do this by assessing the symmetric and asymmetric effects of the Australian dollar–U.S. dollar exchange rate volatility on the exports of 230 U.S. exporting industries to Australia and 129 Australian exporting industries to the United States. We find overwhelming support for short‐run and long‐run asymmetric effects of exchange rate volatility on both countries exports to each other. Recent advances in nonlinear modeling or asymmetry analysis have revealed that nonlinear models produce more significant results compared to linear models. Only one study has demonstrated this with establishing the link between exchange rate volatility and trade flows. We add to the body of literature by considering the possibility of asymmetric effects of exchange rate volatility on commodity trade between Mexico and the U.S. After considering a total of 95 U.S. exporting industries to Mexico and 89 U.S. importing industries from Mexico, we find evidence of short‐run asymmetric effects in 54 exporting and 46 importing industries. Short‐run asymmetric effects translate into long‐run asymmetric effects in 44 exporting and 47 importing industries. These asymmetric effects were masked by the linear model which assumes the effects to be symmetric and they have different implication for different industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study proposes a five-step statistical procedure to examine a linkage among export diversification, mean-reversion of exports, and stability of the export–growth causality. This linkage was assessed for France, Norway, and Switzerland between 1980Q1 and 2016Q4. The findings indicated that the mean-reversion tendency of the export sectors in France and Switzerland was stronger than in Norway, which highlighted the important role of export activities for economic growth in France and Switzerland. Also, the causal relationship between exports and economic growth in Norway was found to be more unstable than in France, but more stable than in Switzerland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With advances in econometric methodologies, old concepts are now receiving a renewed attention and the J-curve is no exception. Previous research that tested the phenomenon assumed that the effects of exchange rate changes on the trade balance are symmetric. Asymmetry analysis and asymmetry cointegration is the new direction that is currently being considered. We add to this later literature by considering the asymmetric effects of exchange rate changes on the bilateral trade balances of Indonesia with each of her major trading partners after accounting for Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 and Global Financial Crisis of 2008. We find support for short-run asymmetric effects in almost all the cases, short-run cumulative or impact asymmetric effects in the trade with five partners and long-run significant asymmetric effects in five bilateral models. We consider the bilateral trade balance of the U.S. with each of her 13 trading partners from the developing world. When we apply the linear ARDL approach of Pesaran et al. (2001), we find support for the J-curve effect with six partners. However, when we apply Shin et al.'s (2014) nonlinear ARDL approach to asymmetry analysis, we find support for the J-curve in the U.S. trade with 10 partners. Additionally, while we find support for the short-run asymmetric effects of exchange rate changes in almost all cases, the short-run effects translate into the long-run significant asymmetric effects in half of the cases.
